Airtel Relaunches Zap as Airtel Money
ompetition in the local money transfer business will heighten after Airtel Kenya unveiled its revamped mobile commerce service. Trading under the brand name Airtel Money, the new mobile commerce platform has undergone a complete transformation ranging from the access menu to distribution network. “We are not just launching a brand name today. The Airtel Money mobile commerce platform has undergone a complete transformation starting with your first interaction with it, which is a simple, easy to use customer friendly access menu that makes it faster and convenient for customers and dealers to carry out transactions. The platform provides consumers with a robust offering of products that cuts across mobile banking, service payments, airtime top up and money transfer services.” said Mr. Rene Meza, MD of Airtel Kenya, adding that Airtel Money is further supported by a state of the art platform

Airtel ventured into the local mobile commerce business two years ago under the Zap brand. The service provides e-commerce solutions including online payments, online banking, utility bill payments for electricity, DSTV, and water. Airtel Money’s extensive network has been complimented by corporate agents to enhance availability and reliability of the service across the country. Airtel Money has signed up close to 100 business partners who provide various services including bulk payments, collection accounts and super dealerships. Through Airtel Money, customers can send a minimum of KES50 at a cost of KES5 to a maximum of KES70,000 per transaction for the cost of KES25. Customers can also send money to other networks at only KES25. Mr. Rene Meza announced a launch offer that enables its customers to send money to any network in Kenya free of charge. He also announced a 10% bonus airtime value on every deposit amount to a

Tanzania government gets $250 million seven-year loan facility
ATI took part in the signing of a historic deal in Tanzania. The deal is a $250 million seven-year loan facility arranged by a syndicate of local and global financiers, an Export Credit Agency and ATI - Africa’s multilateral credit and investment insurer. The government of Tanzania will use the funds for infrastructure
development, mainly in the areas of power and roads. This marks the first time Tanzania has sought commercial financing for its long-term development needs. ATI was selected to insure a $50 million segment of the larger facility based on its key strengths: strong capitalization reinforcing
ATI’s ability to pay claims; an investment grade rating by Standard & Poor’s rating agency; an ability to mobilize global insurers; and a Preferred Creditor Status, which acts as a deterrent against governments causing claims in any ATI-backed deal. “Our unique structure - we are the only multilateral insurer with a Pan African focus - has helped us attract global financial and insurance partners who, in many instances would only invest in or insure a project with ATI’s participation. This is our value added. We are able to pave the way for increased financial and insurance capacity in countries that might otherwise be shunned by the international market as too high risk,” commented George Otieno, ATI’s Chief

CCK Board Appoints Acting Director General
T
he Communications Commission of Kenya (CCK) Board today appointed Mr. Francis Wamukota Wangusi as the Acting Director General of the CCK. This follows an order issued by the High Court on Wednesday, 10 August 2011, instructing Mr. Charles J.K. Njoroge to cease acting as the Director General until the case challenging his reappointment is heard and determined.
The court order also indicated that if the CCK Board chose to replace Mr. Njoroge, then the said replacement would be in an acting capacity until the matter was concluded. Until his appointment, Mr. Wangusi was the Director in charge of Special Projects and Broadcasting at the CCK. He has over twenty seven years of experience in the communications industry and has held other positions at the
commission including Director, Licensing Compliance and Standards, and Head of the Secretariat for the Digital Transition Committee. Mr. Wangusi had earlier worked as a senior lecturer at the Kenya College of Communications Technology (KCCT), now Multimedia University College of Kenya. Mr. Wangusi holds
a Masters degree in Space Sciences with specialization in Satellite Communications from the International Space University, France; a BSc in Telecommunications Engineering from the University of Rome, Italy, and a Charted Engineer Part II Certificate from the Institute of Electronics Engineering, UK.
