When they named me Alexia, I didn't think I was pretty enough to do it justice. I was always just one of many, I didn't really stand out among my kitty housemates. I've seen lots of them come and go and we got along just fine, but we often felt unwell so socializing hasn't come naturally. I'm an older girl and I've been through a lot, the past few months being the most stressful and most rewarding. I had some troublesome toothies that were hurting me, but now they're gone and I feel like a new cat! Ten years old? Paw-lease! My fur is softer, cleaner and more luxurious than ever, and I LOVE to play. I'm pretty sure I'm really a kitten. I'm purring again too! I may still be a little shy, but I've come such a long way. I deserve this pretty name of mine, and I deserve a furrever family!

Slippery season: Mayo Clinic offers 10 tips for avoiding falls

(BPT) - With the winter season approaching, you may need to pay closer attention to watching your step. Even if you're active, healthy and full of life, statistics show that you have a greater chance of taking a debilitating fall as you age. Mayo Clinic notes that some 400,000 "fragility fractures" occur annually due to falls injuring osteoporosisweakened bones.

• Protect yourself with good footwear. Avoid stocking feet. Whether inside or out, wear closefitting shoes and boots that provide good traction. Consider investing in handy removable ice cleats that strap right onto your shoes or boots for walking on slippery surfaces.

• Arrange to have driveways and sidewalks plowed and salted. Consider contracting out these chores for peace of mind when bad weather hits. • Walk like a penguin. People of any age should take short, careful steps when navigating snow or ice, adopting a wide stance and pointing feet slightly outward to maintain a center of balance. Keep your hands out of your pockets for added leverage.

"We get injured when we try to do things beyond our abilities," notes Kim Lombard, an injury prevention coordinator at Mayo Clinic. "Often I hear 'I knew I shouldn't have done it, but I did' or 'I knew I should have asked for help.' People are so afraid to lose their independence they don't want to ask for help, but asking for help actually extends their independence."

• Know your limitations. Remember that you're probably not as nimble as you used to be, and your balance could be reduced if you're on certain medications, have hearing issues and/or you've been drinking.

Fight the ﬂu with these strategies

Influenza can rear its head any time of the year, but is known to be a particularly bad thorn in one’s side during times of year when the weather is cold. According to WebMD, anywhere from 5 to 20 percent of the population will get the flu in an average year and it can take three to seven days for a regular case of the illness to go away, with some effects lingering for up to two weeks. No one wants to get the flu, which is marked by fever, aches and pains, congestion, fatigue, and other symptoms. As a result, people do all they can to help prevent the flu — or at the very least shorten its duration. The best way to stave off the flu is to get a flu vaccination each year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the vaccine is carefully curated to treat against the flu strains that research suggests will be the most common each flu

Fruit juices, water, broth-based soups, and sports drinks can help keep the respiratory system from forming thick mucus that can become laden with bacteria. Should a fever set in, ﬂuids help prevent dehydration. It also can be wise to take zinc supplements during cold and

flu season. Neil Schachter, MD, medical director of the respiratory care department at Mount Sinai Medical Center and the author of “The Good Doctor’s Guide to Colds & Flu,” says zinc may boost immunity, which can shorten the duration or severity of the flu. The flu can quickly escalate and cause serious symptoms. Prevention and early treatment are essential during cold and flu season.
