When they named me Alexia, I didn't think I was pretty enough to do it justice. I was always just one of many, I didn't really stand out among my kitty housemates. I've seen lots of them come and go and we got along just fine, but we often felt unwell so socializing hasn't come naturally. I'm an older girl and I've been through a lot, the past few months being the most stressful and most rewarding. I had some troublesome toothies that were hurting me, but now they're gone and I feel like a new cat! Ten years old? Paw-lease! My fur is softer, cleaner and more luxurious than ever, and I LOVE to play. I'm pretty sure I'm really a kitten. I'm purring again too! I may still be a little shy, but I've come such a long way. I deserve this pretty name of mine, and I deserve a furrever family!

Protect your vehicle from snow, ice and damage from the cold Winter can be an unforgiving season. Freezing temperatures coupled with snow and ice can take its toll on people who live in climates where cold weather is a fact of winter life. While winter can test people’s patience, it also can be harsh on cars and trucks. Understanding what components of a vehicle can be compromised by dropping temperatures and snowy roads can help drivers take action to safeguard their automotive investments. While the Canadian Automobile Association notes that winter can wreak havoc on just about every part of a vehicle, there are some parts that seem to bear the brunt of Old Man Winter’s abuse. Properly servicing and caring for a car or truck can help. Drivers should take their vehicles for a tuneup and inspection before wintry weather arrives. A mechanic will examine the car battery and check antifreeze levels and make sure that the thermostat, defroster, brakes, and even wiper blades are working effectively. Avoid hard plastic scrapers you might use on your windshield, as they can scratch painted surfaces. • Try to park the vehicle in a garage or under a car port, each of which can protect cars and trucks from the often harsh elements of winter. How Much Do Your Kids Know About Money?

allocate their income, whether that’s saving for big-ticket items, putting money away for college or donating to charity.

(StatePoint) With consumer debt on the rise and many failing to adequately save for the future, experts say that financial illiteracy is a major problem for Americans -- and one that communities and parents have a joint responsibility to address, starting in childhood. And right now, most children are coming up short in this area.

• Review free, online financial education materials together that are geared for school-age children, such as those found at PurchasingPower. com and JuniorAchievement.org.

Over 62 percent of the 15- to 18-year-olds tested by the National Financial Educators Council received either a “D” or “F” on the 2017 National Financial Literacy Test. Without intervention, these young people could grow up without the skills needed to manage credit cards, loan debt or savings goals. If you’re a parent, you’ve likely already instilled in your children the importance of good grades and healthy decisions, but if you aren’t also discussing concepts like overall saving, budgeting and the importance of having an emergency fund, now is the time to start. Children are never too young to learn skills needed for a secure financial future. To get started, consider these tips: • Teach young children money basics by playing “store” at home. Take turns being the customer and the cashier. Play board games involving money exchanges to practice addition and subtraction.

www.SmartShopperAd.com

“Purchasing Power has been helping adults learn to manage their money in smarter, more flexible ways for years,” says Richard Carrano, Purchasing Power CEO. “Expanding these efforts to include resources for young people empowers parents to put their kids on the right path in their formative years.” • Seek out community initiatives helping to combat financial illiteracy. For example, Purchasing Power, LLC, a workplace voluntary benefit that allows US workers to buy brand-name products and services interest-free through payroll deduction versus traditional high-interest credit options, partners with Junior Achievement USA, an organization dedicated to giving young people the knowledge and skills they need for economic success. In Atlanta, for example, more than 30,000 middle school students visit the Junior Achievement Chick-fil-A Foundation Discovery Center yearly, where they work with business leaders to learn about real-

life financial situations. Together with Junior Achievement, Atlanta corporations including Purchasing Power are supporting a generation that knows how to budget, save and invest. “Financial illiteracy and confusion over money matters is a national problem that won’t be solved overnight,” adds Carrano. “However, families, employers and communities can take proactive steps to raise money-smart kids and foster healthy financial futures.” Children are never too young to learn how to spend responsibly and save for the future. Get started now in your household.

You may not have saved a lot of money in your life, but if you have saved a lot of heartaches for other folks, you are a pretty rich man. --Seth Parker

• Give children an allowance and help them create a budget. Stress the difference between needs vs. wants to help them make smart decisions when it comes time to shop for clothes, school supplies, toys and more. • Offer children incentives to save, promising to match any money they sock away so they’ll learn how invested money grows. • Encourage teenagers to get parttime jobs, then help them make smart decisions about how to

Fight the flu with these strategies Influenza can rear its head any time of the year, but is known to be a particularly bad thorn in one’s side during times of year when the weather is cold. According to WebMD, anywhere from 5 to 20 percent of the population will get the flu in an average year and it can take three to seven days for a regular case of the illness to go away, with some effects lingering for up to two weeks. No one wants to get the flu, which is marked by fever, aches and pains, congestion, fatigue, and other symptoms. As a result, people do all they can to help prevent the flu — or at the very least shorten its duration.

February 20, 2019

You might want to consider prophylactic treatment with an antiviral medication. In 2000, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the use of oseltamivir phosphate, which is known by the brand name Tamiflu, as a flu preventative. However, many people only reach for the drug when symptoms already have set in. Instead, it can be especially helpful in preventing the flu when someone in the household has already contracted the illness. The results of several clinical studies show that Tamiflu, when taken once daily, is up to 92 percent effective in preventing influenza illness in adolescents, adults and the elderly. Drink plenty of liquids during flu season to keep the body well hydrated so the immune system can be in top form. Fruit juices, water, broth-based soups, and sports drinks can help keep the respiratory system from forming thick mucus that can become laden with bacteria. Should a fever set in, fluids help prevent dehydration.

The best way to stave off the flu is to get a flu vaccination each year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the vaccine is carefully curated to treat against the flu strains that research suggests It also can be wise to take zinc will be the most common each flu supplements during cold and season. A guide for health and well-being for you and your family. 6 Tips from Doctors for a Healthier Heart (StatePoint) February is American Heart Month, and an excellent reminder that there are many easy steps you can take to improve your heart health. Unfortunately, nearly half of all U.S. adults are living with high blood pressure, putting them at an increased risk of heart attack and stroke, according to the American Medical Association (AMA). “During American Heart Month, we urge all Americans to take control of their heart health by knowing and monitoring their blood pressure levels and making healthy lifestyle changes that can significantly reduce the serious health consequences associated with high blood pressure,” says Barbara L. McAneny, M.D., president of the AMA. “We know that by empowering more patients to monitor and control their blood pressure, we will continue to help improve the health of patients, while reducing health care costs.”

create an individualized treatment plan that includes healthy lifestyle changes that you can realistically stick to long-term to help you maintain a lower blood pressure and lower your risk for negative health consequences. 3. Be more physically active. Regular physical activity can help reduce the risk of developing high blood pressure. It is recommended that healthy adults 18 to 65 years of age get at least 150 minutes a week of moderate-intensity activity, or 75 minutes a week of vigorousintensity activity.

asparagine consumption in laboratory mice with triple-negative breast cancer could dramatically reduce the ability of the cancer to travel to distant sites in the body.

Apart from dietary restrictions, metastasis also could be greatly limited by reducing asparagine synthetase using chemotherapy drug L-asparaginase.

Asparagine is found in foods like asparagus, whole grains, soy, seafood, eggs, poultry, beef, legumes, and more. While reducing asparagine will not affect the original breast cancer tumor, it could stop cancer from showing up elsewhere in the body. Researchers suspect that many women with breast cancer do not lose their lives to the original breast cancer tumor, but instead they succumb to metastases or subsequent growths away from the primary site.

More research is needed as to whether similar results can be produced in human trials, making avoiding asparagine currently a helpful but not entirely foolproof method for preventing the spread of breast cancer to other areas of the body.

“Our study adds to a growing body of evidence that suggests diet can influence the course of the disease,” said Simon Knott, Ph.D., associate director of the Center for Bioinformatics and Functional Genomics at Cedars-Sinai and one of two first authors of the study. The research from this study was conducted at more than a dozen institutions.

Ten things for taxpayers to think about when choosing a tax preparer It’s the time of the year when many taxpayers choose a tax preparer to help file a tax return. These taxpayers should choose their tax return preparer wisely. This is because taxpayers are responsible for all the information on their income tax return. That’s true no matter who prepares the return.

Taxpayers should not use a tax preparer who asks them to sign a blank tax form. • Review Before Signing. Before signing a tax return, the taxpayer should review it. All paid tax preparers must have a Preparer Tax Identification Number. By law, paid preparers must sign returns and include their PTIN. • Report Abusive Tax Preparers to the IRS. Most tax return preparers are honest and provide great service to their clients. However, some preparers are dishonest. People can report abusive tax preparers and suspected tax fraud to the IRS. If a taxpayer suspects a tax preparer filed or changed their return without the taxpayer’s consent, they should file Form 14157-A, Return Preparer Fraud or Misconduct Affidavit.
