SALES PROFESSIONAL?

Thanks for the memories, JT It’s possible that this Friday’s Baltimore Jewish Times, after publishing continuously for 93 years, will be its last. More likely it, along with Style Magazine, will be the last publication produced by current owners, the Buerger family, whose lineage goes back through each of those nine decades. As of this writing, a court-established trustee is busy entertaining offers from suitors for the sale of the local icon’s assets, and by the time you read this, ownership status will almost certainly be public knowledge. The reasons for the company’s demise are various and speculative, but all can agree that an unfavorable judgment in a lawsuit with their long-standing printer had the most impact, forcing the company into Chapter 11 proceedings from which they did not emerge. We are rendered nearly speechless by the magazine’s fall from grace. Current CEO/publisher Andrew Buerger’s father and predecessor, Charles (“Chuck,” to nearly everyone) Buerger, became a mentor to me early in my career. The advertising community was a friendlier place in the early ‘80s, yet it had its own pronounced pecking order, primarily determined by marketplace success. And the Jewish Times, or “JT,” under Buerger’s leadership, was at the very top. It’s hard to imagine today, but the magazine would regularly top 150 pages every week and boasted of a readership as interested in the advertising messages as the editorial content. And although I worked for a largely unheralded newspaper with offices down the street, I’d enjoy the occasional lunch with Chuck, who would share advice, encouragement and inside gossip to an earnest, yet green sales rep. Fast-forward to the early ‘90s. A nascent publisher, I launched Smart Shopper Magazine in Northwest Baltimore, the JT’s home turf. Having deep pockets, Buerger countered with a competing coupon magazine to nip our little start-up in the bud. Chuck may have been an early mentor but he could be a son of a gun as a competitor; he could have easily crushed us. Fortunately, he decided against the coupon realm, earning us enough of a reprieve to survive and, in time, grow. Chuck died suddenly in 1996 and Andrew took over the reins. We continued to compete for ad sales, mostly respectfully, over the next two decades. But the Great Recession, new competition, the aforementioned bankruptcy and perhaps a little complacency exacted the final toll.
