“A blast of blooming color...”

ven as a little girl I began looking for the first signs of spring in late February or early March. Although we were often zapped by a last snowstorm or two during those weeks, a freak warm day would show me the first tips of bright purple crocuses, the cheery yellow buds of forsythia, and shoots of golden jonquil and daffodil. These early harbingers of spring remind us every year when it is time for color to poke through the dreary winter landscape. No coincidence, then, that all the local retailers I spoke with for this issue mentioned color as the overriding theme for their new merchandise. If you jumped onto the colorful jeans bandwagon last fall, there’s no need to jump off; jeans are still hip in a bouquet of colors. But along with the reds, tangerines and aubergines, look for Easter-egg shades of mint, lavender, yellow and pink. Shoes are showing up in lighter weights, fancier fabrications and spring hues galore. Sandals, sneakers and flats all share a sunny-day feeling. Bold, bright jewelry is a definite must-have to accentuate your trendy look – especially large, multi-strand necklaces nestled in a V-neck, adorning a shift dress or tucked right below a shirt collar. This will really give your favorite white oxford some oomph! Men aren’t overlooked this season, either. They will find an array of pants in lighter, brighter colors; lightweight sweaters in yummy sherbet tones; and of course, shirts in every color of the rainbow. Look for the color trend in men’s canvas shoes and loafers, too. And some really big news? We’re lucky to have three brand-new specialty stores in suburban Baltimore: Angela Lynn at Quarry Lake, Alice Jane in Bare Hills and The New Balance Store in Timonium. Finally, nautical and patriotic looks are coming in strong…stand up and salute spring! Pastels are huge this spring as well as patterns in floral, tribal, stripes, scarf prints and plaids. Look for fresh one-piece swimsuit silhouettes and bikini separates, fashion-forward coverups and embellished sandals. In both apparel and footwear, crochet will be a strong fabrication. Necklaces will be a more prominent statement piece, with earrings taking a back seat. Men will see their old favorite staple pieces, but in fresh new colors and silhouettes as well as lots of bright plaids, colorful trunks and fun graphic tees. - South Moon Under, Towson, Annapolis and Harbor East

his spring is all about having fun with color and with style,” says The Cottage owner Susan Gauthier. “This is why we are so excited about our Annapolis-based clothing line, Kaeli Smith. She’s incorporated adorable nautical prints into her brand new shorts, capris and pencil skirts. Layered jewelry is another big thing you’ll see this spring and going into summer. We have more and more beautiful pieces coming in.”

Light pastels in general are very big, and we have lot of pretty print tops and light, flowy linen fabrics. I also love a dress here with metallic polka dots for just a bit of sparkle. And we have plenty of slouchy shirts in both long-sleeve and sleeveless styles.” She adds that if clothing is not super comfy, the store just won’t stock it.
