QUALIFICATION GUIDE Access courses
Access programmes are established nationally as an alternative to A level entry to degree and diploma programmes. They provide entry to a degree or diploma with no previous qualifications and provide grounding in the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully progress to a higher education course. We offer various ‘pathways’ that allow entry onto specific degree courses.
HNC (Higher National Certificate) An HNC is ideal for anyone who wants an introduction to their chosen subject. Most students who choose to study for an HNC do so part time over two years while they continue to work. There is the option to do additional modules to progress to an HND, and from there to top up to a full Bachelors Degree.
12-13
HND (Higher National Diploma)
HNDs are available in a wide range of subjects – mainly vocational. HNC/HNDs are well known by employers so this will increase your employability. Entry requirements are generally lower than those needed for degrees. A full time HND will probably take 2 years but longer if it includes an industrial placement. There is the option to top-up to a full degree with further study, either at Lincoln College or other local universities.
Professional qualifications
The college offers several qualifications accredited by professional organisations, such as the ILM and AAT. These qualifications are designed with the needs of the profession in mind, and are often the only route into a given profession.
Foundation Degrees (FdSc & FdA)
These two year degree courses are a cheaper and faster alternative to traditional three year undergraduate courses. They combine the level of learning offered by a degree programme, with practical, commercial experience. Foundation degrees are particularly popular with employers for a number of reasons: they enhance the knowledge and skills of existing employees; increase productivity and competitiveness; change the skill set of existing employees; develop employees within the business and train new employees to learn their job quicker. Foundation degrees normally take two years if studied full time and are a valuable qualification in their own right. They can also be a stepping stone to undergraduate degrees and other studies. Foundation Degrees are awarded in Art (FdA) or Science (FdSc).
Degrees
The title of undergraduate degrees varies depending on the subject studied, from a BA (Bachelor of Arts) to a BSc (Bachelor of Science). Following completion of a first degree, some people progress to a postgraduate degree, either taught for example, an MA (Master of Arts) or a research programme, often called a doctorate, and awarded with a PhD or Doctor of Philosophy.

BA (Hons) Social Science Social science is about trying to make sense of everyday life. It provides the opportunity to analyse a range of social problems, sorting possible solutions from an often bewildering range of alternatives. It is drawn to the contemporary and the topical but with an application and practicality that is inspired by traditional and modern architects of social theory and practice alike. The programme provides critical insight into everything from crime and punishment through to globalisation and human rights. It takes core and sometimes diďŹƒcult questions of human existence and attempts to lay bare their social, political, psychological and economic components. Example modules - Social issues and social justice - Who Runs Britain? Power, politics and beyond. - Thinking Politics - Body Politics - Globalisation and Developing Societies.

What you say... Case study: Adrian Govier Adrian is General Manager of the Five Bells at Bassingham, and has gained a great sense of achievement from studying the HNC in Business. “I wanted to gain a higher level qualification and my brother recommended the HNC at Lincoln College as he’d studied it previously, so I researched the course, liked what it had to offer and decided to apply! Higher Education is certainly a commitment, but studying locally and part time at two evenings a week, meant I could continue to work full time in our family business and have time to be a dad and husband. Returning to the classroom, having left school at 16, was a bit strange at first, but being in a small group of like minded students soon meant I adjusted. I’ve been able to apply the knowledge and skills gained through the course to our business – it’s definitely helped with tasks such as book-keeping, but the greatest achievement is definitely the personal satisfaction I’ve received as a result of studying.”

What you say... Case study: Emma Burgon Emma recently completed the two year FdSc in Health and Active Lifestyles and remains confident with her choice to study Higher Education at Lincoln College: “I wanted a course that would provide the opportunity to gain work experience and help me develop employment skills, whilst putting into practice what I learnt in the classroom, which is exactly what the FdSc in Health and Active Lifestyles provided. I was accepted onto similar programmes at four Universities - choosing to study in Lincoln had many advantages for me. Financially, the costs were reduced as the tuition fees were lower and being able to stay at home meant the cost of living was cheaper. The tutors were very supportive and I loved that the classes were small – I think that played a huge part in being able to stay on top of all the work!” Emma is now employed by the YMCA in Lincoln.
