Learn flexibly Courses in the Community

Work-based Learning

A variety of courses are offered at local community venues so students don’t need to come to college – these include getting started with English and Maths, computing courses and language qualifications plus many more. Many of our learners feel a little nervous about returning to learning and unsure of their ability to cope; we are able to help you overcome these hurdles. We can help learners improve existing skills and gain new ones which can enhance employment prospects and progress onto other courses.

People do not always have to attend college to learn, as learning is part and parcel of working life. Many of our courses are available as work-based learning, which means the learning takes place in the work place or, as with an Apprenticeship, only attending college on a day or block release basis (see page 16 for more on Apprenticeships.) The benefit to the employee is up to date and self managed learning that leads to personal and professional development. The type of learning encourages businesses to become more competitive by developing the high level of skills their business needs.

Community courses can be found on page 42.

Apprenticeships Apprenticeships for adults Whether you are looking for a career change, a promotion at work or want to get your skills formally recognised, an apprenticeship could be a valuable route for you. What’s more, there’s no longer an age cap - Apprenticeships are an option for anyone of working age! If you are aged over 16, living in England and not in full time education you can apply for an Apprenticeship (see details on eligibility). What is an Apprenticeship? Apprenticeships combine learning with working – including on-the-job training and studying at college or at work. You gain industry recognised qualifications confirming your competence and skills. Apprenticeship routes on offer Think apprenticeships and you may well think of the traditional routes, such as construction, engineering and hairdressing, however apprenticeships are a recognised qualification in many industries. Lincoln College offers apprenticeships in the following subjects, which feature throughout the course guide under the relevant subjects: Apprenticeships available: Accounting Administration Automotive Engineering - Service and Repair - Vehicle Body Repair and Finishing - Fast Fit Bricklaying

Business Improvement Techniques Carpentry and Joinery Catering and Hospitality - Food and Drink Service - Hospitality Supervision and Team Leadership - Professional Cookery Childcare Customer Service Dental Nursing Electrical Installation Hairdressing Health and Social Care IT Users Management Manufacturing Engineering Painting and Decorating Plastering Plumbing Property Services Retail Supporting Teaching and Learning Team Leading Warehousing and Distribution Welding and Fabrication Apprenticeship Levels Intermediate (Level 2) – equivalent to 5 good GCSE passes Advanced (Level 3) – equivalent to 2 A Level passes Higher (Level 4) – lead to NVQ Level 4 qualifications and in some cases a Foundation Degree. Am I eligible for an Apprenticeship? Provided you are aged over 16 and of working age, living in England and not in full time education, you are eligible to undertake an Apprenticeship programme. Apprenticeships may carry entry

requirements, which vary between subjects, but REMEMBER – these are flexible. Practical skills, interests and experience are also taken into account, as well as academic achievements. Depending on your eligibility, your employer may be required to make a contribution– please contact the college for further information. How would an Apprenticeship work for me? You need to be employed within a relevant industry, working for a minimum of 16 hours per week or look for an employer who is willing to support your Apprenticeship programme: • Employed? You can join an Apprenticeship programme with the support of your employer and base it around your current job. Get in touch with college or simply fill in an application form (see page 98) to get the process underway. If your employer would like more information on the benefits apprenticeships bring to both the individual and the employer, ask them to call the employer hotline on 0845 2707227. • Not currently employed? A list of local job vacancies is featured on the apprenticeships website, simply visit www. apprenticeships.org.uk to register and start searching. You can search using Lincoln College as the training provider. We are here to help. Contact the college on 01522 876000 or email bdcenquiries@lincolncollege.ac.uk to talk about apprenticeship options or visit www.apprenticeships.org.uk for further information.

‘Our adult apprenticeships have enabled us to make our own opportunities – the skills we are learning are already paying dividends for our business.’ Trevor, 52, and Kathryn, 38, run the Duke William pub in Askham. The decision to embark on adult apprenticeships in Catering and Hospitality has already seen their business go from strength to strength. Initial health and safety and personal licence holders qualifications, studied at college, helped them with their application to take on the pub, however their apprenticeships are providing the necessary skills to make that business a success: “We are already reaping the rewards of studying our apprenticeships - the skills we are acquiring have already seen us save a considerable amount of money and a significant improvement in efficiency”.

How does the apprenticeship work in practice? “Well, the instructors come into the pub to guide us through our coursework. We are working in our own environment surrounded by our own equipment, so we really are learning the skills to help our business.” So what does the future hold? “Advanced Apprenticeships at Level 3. A little way down the line, we will be in a position to take on our own apprentices as they learn the trade in the very same hands on manner.” “There’s a lot of hard work involved, but we strongly believe that an apprenticeship can enable people to make their own opportunities – they can help you achieve your ambitions.”

Fast facts • There’s no fixed start date for some apprenticeships • The duration of apprenticeship programmes varies person to person – you will be qualified once you have reached the required level of competency • There is no longer an upper age limit on apprenticeships – each candidate must be of working age and in paid employment.
