Life and death, sex, and race were among Benetton’s favorite themes. The powerful AIDSpatient ad from ’92 (below) reminds us that Benetton was pushing more than sweaters.

shopping AN INCONVENIENT AD Benetton was once synonymous with warm and fuzzy knits and extremely uncomfortable advertising.

Luciano Benetton

54

“I’m not here to sell pullovers,” argued Benetton’s former bad-boy creative director Oliviero Toscani when called on the carpet about the series of photographs he did that changed fashion advertising forever. The most unsettling—which ran in the early ’90s—featured an emaciated AIDS victim on his deathbed, a soldier holding what appears to be a human bone, an oil-slicked bird immobilized in dirty water, a priest kissing a nun . . . and so it went. Every ad was an oh-my-God conversation piece. And if you can’t recall any actual clothes for sale in these ads, well, there weren’t any. “I would find it limiting to make use of a large advertising budget only to say that your own product is better than someone else’s,” says the brand’s founder and president, Luciano Benetton. “We were dissenters, trying to change everything that existed at that moment, proposing our own lifestyles.” How many fashion houses list collaborations with The World Health Organization, the World Food Program, and Reporters Without Borders as their greatest achievements?

marie claire / oct 2006

The current ad campaign, while edgy and colorful, lacks Benetton’s old political bite—and this, it seems, is by design. “Today’s challenges,” says the founder, “for a company like ours, are less ideological and more technological.” To that end, he’s created a blog, BenettonTalk (www.benetton talk.com), on which global themes like the environment and diversity are discussed; Fabrica, Benetton’s research center in Treviso, Italy, continues to school young artists from around the world in the latest communication technology. It’s also worth rallying ’round the fall/winter 2006 collection, which introduces a line of knitwear made of bamboo jersey, a more sustainable and ecofriendly fiber than cotton. In honor of Benetton’s 40th anniversary, from October 6–November 6, the Centre Pompidou in Paris presents Fabrica: les yeux ouverts, an exhibition of videos, installations, and photographic essays. See it online at www.centrepompidou.org.

Shopping Abroad: Moi Aussie

Toni Maticevski may emerge as the most elegant export from down under since Nicole. His party dresses—rich with tailoring, volume, and drapery—are available at We of the Never-Never in L.A. and Elizabeth Charles boutique in NYC. “Toni’s pieces are relaxed and appear effortless, while at the same time making the wearer feel like a fairy princess,” explains Charles. We’re sold.

Heartbreaker, Dream Maker When not fronting his garageglam band, Semi-Precious Weapons, 24-year-old Justin Tranter solos as a preciousjewelry designer. His new line, Fetty (the name merges “fucked up” and “pretty,” he says), is a collection of charm-bearing earrings and necklaces that’s a riff on the band’s gun-and-heart logo. It grew out of the original band merch, which their fans ate up. Enter Tranter’s biggest fan— his mother, a designer of custom engagement rings in Chicago— who inspired him to “do her proud and make them with semiprecious materials.” A series of six miniature 14K-gold and jewel-encrusted charms, each accompanied by a heart slightly damaged by its tiny weapon, is now available at Barneys Co-Op. “I hand-damage all the hearts myself,” boasts Tranter.

Breton Stripes Call it the product of the people: Unisex, easy to wear, and undeniably chic, a seaworthy knit top is one style that fits all Long before Edie Sedgwick wore hers sans pants and Kurt Cobain gave his the grunge treatment, the Breton striped shirt was the uniform of mariners in Brittany, France (hence the name, Breton). Legend has it that after spotting the seafaring men on vacation, Coco Chanel whipped up her own version of their blue-and-white top. With her stamp, it became a universal symbol of effortless French class. Now every fashion house from Gaultier to the Gap has a unique spin on the wardrobe basic. The secret to its staying power? Camouflage Print

Atten-tion! When worn outside the trenches, the shadowy, olive-hued blotches of combat are a target for envious eyes

All “I didn’t see you there” jokes aside, camouflage has a rich and storied history. While animals were the first camoufleurs, using scales, fur, and feathers as masking, the practicality of a deceptively mottled pattern wasn’t discovered by mankind until World War I. Fashion—always on the lookout for a good optical illusion—took note. The woodland print has since found its way onto everyone from pinup girls to punk rockers. For some, the telltale speckles are a symbol of anti-establishment inyour-fascism; for others, they’re a military tribute. But no matter the stance of its wearer, camo does anything but blend in. —Katie L. Connor

Stacked Bangles

Short stack or tall, onyx or jade, there’s an arm-candy combo for every appetite

Heels always get the credit for amping up an otherwise dull ensemble. But long before Louboutins, our fashion forebears often relied on bracelets—intricately carved and worn in multiples—to provide maximum effect with minimal effort. The striking impact of stacked bangles has since survived everything from the fall of empires to the rise of ’80s music—proof that the building of a timeless look starts with a single pile of cuffs. 26
