Since 1953, we’ve understood wellness, and through our local teams of colleagues, we constantly strive to make a di erence, to be inclusive and to do better. We choose our community wellbeing partnerships carefully, and our commitment is considerable.
McCauley was the first pharmacy group to train all our colleagues in the use of the Jam Card, which is carried in an app or as a physical card by thousands of people who have a hidden disability or who are neurodivergent. Jam stands for ‘just a minute’, and it explains instantly to our trained colleagues that a valued customer needs a little bit more time and patience.
For the past four years, McCauley has been in partnership with the Wexford GAA Wellness programme, helping to provide activities for all ages and abilities. As part of this, they run the GAA for All summer camps for children on the autism spectrum. These camps are a fun way for kids to learn new skills, and make new friends.
McCauley are also delighted to support Cottage Autism Network (CAN), who support children with autism and their parents in the communities in which we care for our customers. This year, they created the South East’s first ever Autism Conference, which provided parents with the information required to seek the necessary supports and the chance to build links with other parents and organisations.
In terms of elderly care, McCauley is active in the South and South West of the country, in partnership with Cork University Hospital Department of Geriatric Medicine. I’ve always been a fan of simplifying make-up, whether it was in the make-up looks I did as an artist, or through my teaching. When I started Skingredients three years ago, it was born out of over 10,000 Skin Nerd consultations. People kept asking the same questions about what to use, what not to use, how to use it. Those questions really informed what Skingredients is.

Before we even decided on the name True Beauty by Aideen Kate, I had a clear vision that I wanted it to be minimal in design, as I want it to be timeless. The nude and black colours are perfect — simple, yet it stands out.
True Beauty is easily summed up as a ordable, high quality, luxurious make-up. That was the vision and that has absolutely been achieved, which is really the best part of creating your own brand. Seeing it become a reality is amazing. I love how something that started o as just a drawing has come to life. It’s so satisfying!

I’ve been working in pharmacy for over 20 years and so many people would come in looking for natural remedies, particularly for sleep and general restlessness during the day. They wanted to avoid anxiety medications and sleeping tablets, but they needed something.
My area of specialist study in college was pharmacognosy — the study of plants and herbs as medicine — so I’ve always been interested in mushrooms and their health benefits. They are huge in the US, but there wasn’t much awareness here.

We have moved into a phase of living with Covid-19. This winter, the virus will be around, but those vaccinated are not being advised to test. If you have symptoms, you should: self-isolate until 48 hours after your symptoms are gone. My top tip this winter is to have boosters up to date for all the family. The best way to get through this winter is to get fully protected, so the flu vaccine is most important. Now, we can give it to children up to 17 for free in the pharmacy and it’s a nasal spray, so no needle. It’s free for over 65s.
A lot of people go through winter feeling exhausted and don’t realise that tiredness is a key sign of vitamin D deficiency. Even in summer, 80% of Irish adults are deficient in vitamin D, so good advice is to take a supplement, because because we don’t get enough from sun or from our diet. There is evidence that vitamin D minimises the impact of respiratory disease, and new advice is that children under four should take a supplement, as well as over 65s.
Sleep is so important for energy and immunity. If you’re not sleeping properly, your immune system will be low. I find my Fitbit great for monitoring my sleep, and wearing it at night promotes good sleep hygiene habits.
