Dear Alumni, Families, and Friends of St. Mary’s College, It has truly been a pleasure serving as the vice president for advancement at St. Mary’s College of Maryland and as the executive director of the College’s foundation. My ﬁrst year has been encouraging, but that is no surprise as St. Mary’s fosters community as naturally as it does learning. I am pleased to represent and serve such a well-regarded institution in higher education. I am also excited for our recent accomplishments and eager for the work ahead as we, together, build ﬁnancial support for our school. Maureen C. Silva

To achieve the College’s goal for accessibility, diversity, and academic excellence, our pursuit includes reaching out to students and faculty to better understand their needs, and collaborating across campus to establish a course of action that sustains our public legacy and affirms our mission. Involving our alumni, families, and neighbors – who understand the value and importance of investing in St. Mary’s – is a top priority. The Advancement Office is poised to develop closer relationships with our constituents and to make St. Mary’s more widely known. We have grown the number of opportunities to engage alumni, families and friends in the life of the institution. For example, we have invited alumni to share their talents and expertise and engage students in and out of classrooms; we have partnered with the Student Affairs Division on the St. Mary’s Family Network; and we have included the community at large in announcements of lectures, performances and sporting events to share our educational, cultural and athletic offerings. While we are striving to welcome everyone to our beautiful campus, we are also reaching out to people in their own regions, through initiating alumni chapters in Boston, New York, and San Francisco; hosting nation-wide receptions around faculty engagements and student activities; and making personal visits with our devoted investors to better understand St. Mary’s impact. We are grateful to all of our dedicated supporters and new partners for helping to make a residential liberal arts education possible for our students and for St. Mary’s continued success. With this annual report, we thank and recognize contributors to the St. Mary’s College of Maryland Foundation in support of the College. This year we have refined our giving levels to more aptly recognize our leadership donors whose annual gifts provide much-needed scholarships and research grants and enhance our core and signature programs. The annual report celebrates all of you who have made St. Mary’s a priority of the past, present, and future. Uniting around St. Mary’s is a transformative endeavor and we simply could not offer such a distinctive education without your commitment. In 1840, the Maryland legislature authorized a state-wide lottery to ﬁnance the construction of a public, non-denominational boarding seminary in St. Mary’s City. In 1992, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, a residential liberal arts institution, was named the state’s public honors college. While our status as a public trust and our promise of public education – affordable to all and thriving on diversity and high standards of academic excellence – stem from distinctive legislative origins, it is philanthropy that sustains our commitment to a legacy of affordability and educational rigor.

Within the 1840 Society, there are five levels of giving. Monument Circle $25,000+ As Maryland’s “living monument” to the historical significance of the colonial capital – St. Mary’s City – the school exemplifies an ethos of toleration. The “Freedom of Conscience” statue not only symbolizes St. Mary’s founding and guiding principles, but also the luminaries who support the school’s mission. Donors at this level have created, for example, four-year scholarships, lighting the way for students with financial need – the institution’s highest priority. Horseshoe Bend Circle $10,000-$24,999 The St. Mary’s River has been integral to campus since the days when students traveled by steamboat. As the campus physically envelops the river, the water enriches the lives of all who study and teach here. Donors at this level have enhanced the distinctive living and learning environment that makes St. Mary’s unique.

Pine Tree Hill Circle $5,000-$9,999 The vista from above St. John’s Pond provides vantage points to the past – the first archaeological dig on the college campus was carried out here in 1967 – and to the horizon. Donors at this level have ensured new opportunities, including the resources for students to carry out St. Mary’s Projects. The outcomes of these research projects or creative expressions in the arts transcend the College’s boundaries and have implications in their respective fields. Willow Oak Circle $2,500-$4,999 The magnificent tree growing in the Garden of Remembrance symbolizes nurture and knowledge. Donors at this level have provided, for instance, assistance grants and hope to students who are financially struggling to complete their St. Mary’s degrees. Bell Tower Circle $1,000-$2,499 Dedicated in 1980, the memorial carillon stands as a tribute to St. Mary’s devoted leaders and supporters. Donors at this level have strengthened programs, including academic, student life, and athletic programs, that are essential to a residential campus.
