THE FUNDAMENTAL FOUR

The fundamental liberal arts skills (critical thinking, information literacy, written expression, and oral expression) are the cornerstones of a traditional liberal arts education and are essential to St. Mary’s College’s integrative core curriculum. All students in all majors at St. Mary’s College employ these skills throughout their academic careers.

FIRST YEAR SEMINAR

Start your college experience with a first year seminar. Develop and promote global literacy and leadership. For her FYS, Caitlyn Sarudy ’20 chose the Global Scholars Program.

STUDENT-DESIGNED MAJOR

A student-designed major can be a great way to build bridges between disciplines, allowing you to combine your own interests and apply them in a meaningful, academically rigorous way.

ST. MARY’S PROJECT

Your capstone academic effort begins your junior year and concludes in your senior year. The St. Mary’s Project is an original research project you create. It’s mentored by your faculty adviser. It’s not uncommon for seniors to present their research at national conferences or to get published with their advising professor.

Mackenzie Begley ’19 Major: Undecided

“I knew St. Mary’s was a part of me when we were first getting out on the water: 5 a.m. comes early and we had been training for weeks in the gym but that first sunrise along the St. Mary’s River ... that’s when I knew I made the right choice. Nowhere compares. When I’m home I miss being at school and wish I could wake up to see that sky every morning. “

Think a beautiful college on the water is simply focused on strengthening your mind and preparing you for your future? Think again. St. Mary’s College of Maryland gives “competitive edge” a new meaning. It’s not just whether you can cut it on the field, but whether you’re sharp enough to handle the academics at one of the nation’s premier public liberal arts colleges. It’s a challenge. But then again, what would be the point if it weren’t?

Major: economics Highlights: Vice President and CFO of Mayson-Dixon Strategic Consulting in Baltimore

40 UNDER 40 & THRIVING

THE ART OF BEING PUBLISHED

As a student, Jayson was president of the student government association. Now he is president and CEO of Mayson-Dixon Strategic Consulting, specializing in strategic planning for government agencies, nonprofits, political officers and community developers. In its first year, the company grew from one home office to three offices, seven full-time employees, and eighteen clients. In November 2016, Jayson was recognized as one of the Baltimore Business Journal’s 2016 class of 40 Under 40 for his growing business and public service.

"Since my freshman year of SMCM, I knew that I wanted to incorporate the two things that I loved most: English and art. I also knew that I wanted my St. Mary’s Project (SMP) to be a graphic novel. Initially, a lot of people didn’t believe me when I said “I’m going to do this,” but when my junior year came around and I approached my two SMP mentors, Jennifer Cognard-Black (professor of English) and Joe Lucchesi (associate professor of art history), both were excited and supportive. And I did “do it.” Conducted is a published graphic novel.

What exactly does a boutique development and public affairs agency do? Mayson-Dixon Strategic Consulting specializes in fundraising, marketing and communications, and business development. Government agencies, non profits, political leaders, and community developers can all benefit from our services. We use a hands-on approach based on research, data, and partnerships to achieve results for our clients.

Though the project was a long and arduous process, every minute was a moment spent doing what I loved. Each week my mentors pushed me to try harder, to think more creatively, and to examine what I knew, and what my characters knew.

What is a lesson learned in St. Mary’s that you’ve applied in your work? While attending SMCM, I learned the importance of building and utilizing my network. The relationships I have built over the years have played a large role in my success today. I have been able to turn business relationships into friendships and friendships into business. Without properly building and utilizing my network, my life and my business would be much different. What keeps you motivated in your career? As time has gone on, I have become more and more motivated by my team. Since Mayson-Dixon’s creation in 2015, the Mayson-Dixon team has grown from 4 to over 10 employees. Each of my team members has surprised and impressed me with their work. Just like everyone else in the world I have my days when I don’t want to get out of bed or just want to have a lazy day. Seeing my team work so hard makes me want to keep working on those rough days. What advice would you give to a young man or woman just about to start college? I would tell them to grow and never settle. You are going to encounter a lot of bumps in the road during college, but take them all as learning experiences. College is the perfect time to meet new people, try new things, and learn, so it should not be taken for granted. Find what you love and continue to build from there.

I had to learn a mature sense of control and perseverance— knowing that my deadlines were strict, and that if I procrastinated I’d not be able to finish the project. The twenty to thirty revisions of the text, and then the 130 page fully drawn, colored, and designed manuscript was a summation of passion, energy, hard-work, and sometimes, stubborn commitment to my goals. I learned a lot from finishing it. I attended the Harrisburg Comic Con as an artist, and sold a few copies of my book—this taught me that hard work sometimes does pay off, but the work is never done. If I want to keep my passion alive I need to continue to write, continue to draw, and continue to focus on the relationship between text and image. As a college graduate who has accomplished the feat of writing a full length graphic novel, I am prepared to be a professional, and I am prepared to take on the journey of my next novel with less guidance. I’m ready for the professional world that senior project introduced me to. "

Keely Houk ’17

Major: English, art and art history Minor: music Highlight: Combined her English and art & art history majors in a graphic novel for her St. Mary’s Project; sold that graphic novel after graduation at Comic-Con: Harrisburg, Pa.

RENEWABLE ENERGY SCIENTIST “Because of the liberal arts nature of St. Mary’s, I was naturally exposed to many disciplines. I drew from each of these in order to focus my ambitions toward solving problems that I am passionate about.” So says Troy Townsend of how his St. Mary’s College education helped him to become a front-runner in using nanotechnology in the development of low-cost, lightweight solar panels for everyday applications. Townsend’s research investigates the design, synthesis, and device applications for inorganic nanocrystals with a focus on energy and power systems. He has investigated solar fuel generation from water and sunlight using inorganic nanoscale photocatalysts and implementation of nanomaterials into photovoltaics, LEDs, and batteries. In 2017, Townsend was awarded a $100,000 technology product development grant through the Maryland Industrial Partnerships (MIPS) Program. MIPS promotes the development and commercialization of products and processes through industry/university research partnerships. MIPS provides matching funds to help Maryland companies pay for the university research.

Troy Townsend ’07

Assistant Professor of Chemistry Major: chemistry, biology PhD: University of California, Davis; postdoctoral fellow at Naval Research Laboratory Highlight: TEDx contestant, September 2017 in Leonardtown, Md.

He is currently working with Solar Tech Inc., a Maryland-based startup company, to develop a proof-of-concept process to print low-cost and lightweight solar modules. When that process is in place, Solar Tech Inc. will be able to produce solar panels faster and at a fraction of the cost of traditional silicon-based photovoltaics. For Townsend, his return to St. Mary’s has served as a capstone for his liberal arts experience. “My studies have allowed me to pursue my passion for the environment and to take a goal and turn it into something real. In order to be successful in the world, you have to be able to draw from strengths in every discipline. I think that the liberal arts exposes students to many disciplines and in doing so allows them to work on a multitude of levels,” he says. “I know that’s what it did for me.” “Teaching has let me continue my research and share what I’ve learned with others,” says Townsend. He has mentored St. Mary’s Projects and helped set up internship opportunities: Dario Durastanti ’16 (chemistry) interned with the nearby Patuxent River Naval Air Station to develop an anti-corrosion spray-on nanocoating for aircraft.
