Congratulations and welcome to Assistant Profesor of Psychology Nayantara Kurpad!
Dr. Kurpad earned her PhD in applied psychology where she specialized in applied cognitive psychology at the University of Massachusetts Lowell
Dr. Kurpad's research lies in the intersection of cognitive psychology and education. With roots in cognitive theories and its applications to practical situations, she focuses on investigating the why’s and how’s of student learning, with a special interest in metacognition
In FA22, Dr. Kurpad is teaching Introduction to Psychology and Cognitive Psychology.
We hope this finds you safe and well! The new academic year is well underway and things are mostly back to "normal" here. We had some anticipated departures towards the end of SP22 but also some unanticipated ones so once again the department had to navigate staffing issues The only thing constant is change! With some creative flexibility we are maintaining a strong program and the ability to serve our students Here's what's new:
We have been joined by three new faculty members: Dr Nayantara Kurpad, Dr Amie Severino '11, and Dr Yu Sun Chung Meet them throughout the newsletter (pages 1 & 6)!
Dr Richard Platt retired after 29 years of dedicated service to the College He plans to tackle a long "honey do" list in his retirement, including work to prepare several rental properties for sale.
Dr Fernandez relocated to Virginia to be closer to family and joined the faculty at Christopher Newport University
We held a joint farewell gathering for Rich and Gina on April 28 Former department member Dr Terell Lasane made a guest appearance. View the photos here!
Dr Enright relocated to California to join her husband on the west coast. She is continuing on as a member of the department this year by serving as an adjunct professor to remotely mentor four St Mary's Project students
We have welcomed back Dr Cjersti Jensen as an adjunct professor! A developmental psychologist, Dr Jensen previously taught as a visiting assistant professor in AY19 20 & AY 20 21 In AY 22 23, Dr Jensen will teach Lifespan Development remotely from her home in Colorado.
We miss you and hope you are off doing amazing and rewarding things Please let us know!
Connect with us, especially Angie, via LinkedIn (and join our LinkedIn alumni group). If you are on Facebook, like the Psychology Alumni page and send Angie info to post (including job and/or internship opportunities) or post it directly If you plan a visit to campus during the academic year or summer, let us know! We absolutely love to hear from our alumni and include them in our events And, if you stop by during the week, a faculty and/or staff member would happily join you for a coffee/tea or lunch Take great care and keep in touch!
Jennifer Tickle, Angie Draheim ’03,Allyson Myers '22 was the recipient of the 2022 Myron G Marlay Award for Science Her project, "The Fight Against College Suicide: Creating a suicide prevention training resource for St Mary's College of Maryland Resident Assistants" was mentored by Dr Aileen Bailey
46 students completed an SMP in psychology in AY21 22. Showcase projects (those se lected by faculty mentors to be the “best in show”) from that cohort were done by seniors Gabrielle Backus '22, Mason Drusano '22, Erin Lanham '22, Isabella Moutoux '22, and Allyson Myers '22.
Project titles abstracts from these and all past showcase students are available here
Isabella Moutoux was selected by a faculty committee as the winner of the AY21 22 Department SMP Award ($100) Her SMP study, “The Role of Gender and Sexual Orientation in Perceptions of Ghosting Acceptability,” was mentored by Dr Gili Freedman (who was virtual in 21 22 but was able to join in on the big day thanks to Zoom and fellow SMP student Drew Sonnenberg). The effects of eye contact on self disclosure and trust Julia went on from EPA to present this research at two regional conferences as a virtual poster at the L Starling Reid Undergraduate Psychology Conference (hosted by UVA) on April 15, 2022, and as a short talk at the virtual Lehigh Valley Association of Independent Colleges (LVAIC) Undergraduate Psychology Conference on April 23.
The Psychology Research Fund was established by (now Emeritus) Professor Roy Hopkins in the early 1990s to support student research efforts in psychology, especially travel to present at annual conferences (e.g., collaborative posters from directed research).
Four grants totaling $641 were awarded from the Psychology Research Fund in FY22.
One student received $71 to support costs associated with presenting a virtual directed research based poster at SPSP 2022
One alumna received $200 to support costs associated with presenting an in person directed research based poster at SPSP 2022.
One alumna received $170 to present a directed research based poster at EPA 2022
One student was granted $200 to present a directed research based poster at EPA 2022; they ultimately submitted for a $171.97 reimbursement.
The Bucknam Glidden Fund was created from the combination of a fund started by (now Emerita) Distinguished Professor Laraine Glidden in 1996 and leftover Psi Chi funds (granted for a SMP) donated by Elaine Bucknam ’16; it also supports psychology majors presenting at conferences.
One grant totaling $200 was awarded from the Bucknam Glidden Fund in FY22 for a student to present her SMP at the Annual Meeting of EPA She decided not to attend, however With the world getting more back to "normal" we expect and hope to see more requests from alumni for support to present their SMPs at in person or hybrid conferences
A huge thank you to all who donated to the research funds in FY22!
Please consider supporting current and future SMCM psychology students and recent psychology alumni by donating to one or both of these funds on Giving Tuesday or sometime in FY23!
The main differences be tween the two research funds is that the Bucknam Glidden Fund only applies to original research and must be related to/ associated with presenting at a conference whereas the Psychology Research Fund has the flexibility to support both conference related and non conference related costs and need not be original research
Alumni presenting their SMP (conducted under the mentorship of SMCM Psy chology faculty) for the first time at an academic confer ence (e.g., APA, EPA, SFN, SSEA, SRCD, SPSP) can apply for funding from the Bucknam Glidden Fund.
If you are a recent graduate who will be making such a presentation of your SMP and need help with registra tion costs or poster printing, please complete the Depart ment of Psychology Re search Funding Application Form (available from this link on our website) and submit it to the academic program coordinator, Angie Draheim

Our alumni map poster in Goodpaster Hall currently features 97 of our wonderful alumni. We use the info to show current and prospective students and their parents all the fantastic things you've gone on to do after SMCM and where you are now. It's great for them to see how psychology can really take a person a lot of places and to so many different psyc related and non psyc related career paths. The large map poster is a dedicated stop on College tours and we print out mini versions for open houses and majors fairs Whichever size, it is always a big hit
We’ve heard from several current students passing by the poster that your shown successes help them feel more secure in their major choice! And we’ve heard from the Office of Admissions that the map has influenced more than one person to go to SMCM to major in psychology So thanks for your help on those two fronts!
Additionally, we use your various career and grad school information for our program brochure that we distribute at open houses and such We also have a series of slides on our program TV display that show the wide range of various career paths which we also use to discuss with local high school AP Psyc students when they come to visit the department for field trips
