GIVING TUESDAY 2017 Our Giving Tuesday initiative was a record-setting day for St. Mary’s College. Within a 24-hour period, 1,411 donors provided $239,589 to support our students. Donna West ’76, Jeanne Brady ’88 and John C. Saum ’89, and Professor Don Stabile provided challenges to keep the day’s momentum going. When we reached our original goal of 600 donors – and unlocked Professor Stabile’s $75,000 challenge – he offered an additional $25,000 if we reached 900 donors. We didn’t stop there, we just kept going higher and higher!

NEW NAMED FUNDS THAT WERE ESTABLISHED THIS FISCAL-YEAR: FLORES UNDERGRADUATE RESEARCH IN BIOLOGY The Flores Undergraduate Research in Biology Fund was established to help defray expenses that students incur in the process of conducting undergraduate research. After a competitive application process, the first recipients were chosen: Melanie Kimball ’19, biology major and environmental studies and studio art minors, and Maxime Zamba-Campero ’19, biology and math majors.

JOHN BELL HAVRE DE GRACE & JOHN BELL HARFORD COUNTY SCHOLARSHIPS John Bell, class of 1995, created two merit-based scholarships: the John Bell Havre de Grace Scholarship for graduates of Havre de Grace High School and the John Bell Harford County Scholarship for residents of Harford County, Maryland.

KATHIE UNDERWOOD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP Skip LeFaivre, class of 1967, created the Kathie Underwood Memorial Scholarship to benefit underrepresented students who are enrolled in the Master of Arts in Teaching program at St. Mary’s College. For example, Daniel Capasso ’20 (top right), Ava Chrisler ’20 (top left), and Melanie Kimball ’19 (front right) received stipends to assist Jessica Malisch (front center), assistant professor of biology, with field research and to develop independent projects on white-crowned sparrows, a songbird that breeds in Tioga Pass Meadow at 10,000 feet elevation and adjacent to Yosemite National Park. The research focuses on hormones related to metabolism and how these hormones influence reproductive decisions made by the sparrows during inclement weather.

The students conducted much of this research wearing snow shoes (as snow depth can remain high into July) while residing in an off-grid cabin for a period of six weeks.

THE HURRICANE HARVEY DISASTER RELIEF INITIATIVE St. Mary’s College of Maryland students led by the SGA collected nearly $14,000 in monetary donations and 10,000 non-perishable items for the Hurricane Harvey Disaster Relief Initiative. St. Mary’s College Foundation Board President Jack Saum Jr. ’89 and Jeanne Brady Saum ’88 (in center of photo), owners of the Beltway Companies, recognized the importance of this initiative and donated the truck and driver in order to make the journey with the non-perishable items to southeastern Texas. At the same time, the Saums’ annual golf tournament fundraiser raised over $50,000 for their Beltway Companies Endowed Scholarship Fund.
