Overview Using the Community Based Participatory Model, MECCA and its collaborative agencies and partners developed suicide prevention trainings and a multimedia campaign targeting 7 different cultural communities, as well as the LGBTQ+ population. All trainings were informed by focus groups, interviews, and surveys from each community. The trainings were adapted to address the unique characteristics of each culture. All materials were translated into the six Orange County threshold languages including: Arabic, Mandarin, Farsi, Korean, Spanish, and Vietnamese in addition to the subthreshold language Khmer.

Training Material Two trainings (one for youth, one for adults) were developed by each agency to incorporate feedback from the focus groups and interviews and target the intricacies of their specific communities. Even the names of the trainings were changed to best fit the needs of the community. Both trainings teach on the stigma and silence surrounding suicide; signs, symptoms, and risks of suicide; interventions, and resources. The youth training includes components of the power of peer-to-peer support, advocacy, and how to talk to your parents about suicide. Multi-lingual Social Media Posts MECCA and MECCA Partners designed an original multi-targeted, multi-lingual social media campaign called: “You Are Not Alone.” The campaign was not limited to social media, as posts and announcements were made on radio shows, press conferences, WeChat, etc. The campaign utilized information from Know The Signs (www.suicideispreventable.org) and community input. Each month focused on a specific theme and were translated into 7 different languages. Themes Included: •September: Know the Signs (educating on the signs and symptoms of suicidal thoughts) •October: Find the Words (what to say and do if someone is experiencing suicidal thoughts) •November: Reach Out (what resources exist to support someone who is feeling suicidal) •December: You Are Not Alone (emphasizing that many people experience suicidal ideation and that recovery is possible)

Utilization of Social Media Posts Suggested captions: (1) Suicide prevention is not just about telling people to reach out for help or call the hotline. We need to create an environment that is supportive and encourages others to open up. (2) Suicide is a scary topic, and many people feel they are not equipped to help someone who is experiencing suicidal thoughts. The truth is: Anyone can help, as long as they are willing to listen, support, and refer to a professional resource. (3) You or someone you know may be experiencing suicidal thoughts right now. The truth is: you are not alone. There are people who have gone through similar struggles, but come out stronger. There are people who want to help. There are people who care.
