THE BACK TO WORK ISSUE
New owners for historic comic book store BY MATTHEW HALL Editor-in-Chief
DOWNTOWN In comic books, a lot can happen in 30 years. Batman died (and came back), Superman died (and came back), Captain America died (and came back), Wolverine died (and is still dead … for now), Spiderman kind of died (if you count having your memories and personality supplanted by an aging super-villain) and
came back. The action hasn’t been limited to death and resurrection. Batman had a kid (or two depending on how you count the DNA overwrite that created Terry McGinnis), we’re on at least the 4th Captain America, there have been several wars (some civil, some secret) and the entire DC universe is “new.” It’s been a busy time and for many on the Westside, those adventures have all begun with a trip to Hi De Ho Comics in Santa Monica.
The store has been in business for 37 years and has earned a reputation as the longest continuously operating comic book store in the LA area. The store has become a bastion of comic culture and like many of the stories it stocks, Hi De Ho is about to enter a new era with a new creative team thanks to its recent sale to a group of local investors. One of the buyers, Eddie DeAngelini, said there are plans to improve the cusSEE COMIC PAGE 8

Airport Commission likes environmental regulations BY DAVID MARK SIMPSON Daily Press Staff Writer
SMO The Santa Monica Airport Commission has approved an ordinance that would ban aircraft that produce significant amounts of potentially dangerous emissions. The ordinance, which was put forth by Commissioner Suzanne Paulson and approved by a vote of 3 to 1, still needs approval from City Council. Paulson told the commission that black carbons or ultra-fine particles and hydrocarbons pose health threats to the communities neighboring the Santa Monica Airport, particularly neighbors to the east. “Pilots have repeatedly expressed that they would like to have an exemplary, clean, green sustainable airport,” she said, “and one that really provides sustainable leadership for general aviation airports, potentially nationwide.” The ordinance would, if approved by council, ban aircraft that produce 40 or more pounds of hydrocarbon per hour when idling and 200 pounds per hour of nitrogen and oxides when in takeoff mode. This would go into effect in April. Those limits would be phased down to 10 pounds and 80 pounds respectively over the next couple years. “We are in no way suggesting that the city of Santa Monica regulate tailpipe emissions or turbine emissions from any sort of aircraft,” Paulson said, “but instead use the power that is provided to the owner of the airport to say who can use its business.” Regulating emissions would be challenging so the ordinance simply suggests banning types of aircraft that create more pollution than the aforementioned levels. These totals are available in a database. “We think that one really solid step toward this goal is to address the highly elevated pollution levels that are created downwind of the airport by restricting the use of the airport by aircraft that are rated to proSEE RULES PAGE 10

SACRAMENTO Attorney General Kamala Harris is starting her final four years as California’s top law enforcement officer this week with a major initiative aimed at protecting children. She plans to announce during her swearing-in Monday that she is creating a bureau within the state Department of Justice that will focus on crimes against children. Some of its work will expand on priorities during Harris’ first four years, including deterring school truancy and the trafficking of young women for sex, domestic labor or sweat shops. The bureau also will tackle what Harris says are “tragically flawed” foster care and adoption systems and fight discrimination in schools, such as bullying. “In the coming term, we’re going to double down. We’re going to use the power of this office to lift up the next generation of Californians,” Harris said in remarks prepared for her inauguration speech. She added later that, “We can’t keep letting down our most vulnerable children today, then lock them up tomorrow and expect a different outcome next week.” Harris, 50, is one of the California Democratic Party’s brightest stars and is expected to make a future run for governor or the U.S. Senate. She has declined to discuss her political plans, but San Jose State University political science professor Larry Gerston said her choice of a focus for her final term can only enhance her chances.

“It’s one of those issues that no one can deny is a problem and no one can criticize someone for taking it on,” he said. It will help her standing with educators and women, he said, at a time when she is the only high-profile woman prominently mentioned as a candidate if U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer retires in 2016 or when Gov. Jerry Brown is termed out of office in 2018. Both are Democrats. Yet it also has been a theme throughout her career, which began with prosecuting child sexual assault cases in Alameda County. She later led the San Francisco City Attorney’s Division on Children and Families before becoming San Francisco district attorney. Harris barely squeaked into statewide office four years ago, but since then has had “an astounding ascendance when it comes to the political hierarchy in the state,” Gerston said. She was best known in her first term for helping negotiate a tougher, larger settlement with the nation’s top five banks after the foreclosure crisis, and for refusing to defend Proposition 8, the statewide initiative that banned gay marriage until it was rejected by the courts. But she also emphasized the damage from truancy in two reports, the first of which found that 30 percent of California elementary school students miss enough school each year to harm their academic performance. The second, in September, found that black elementary schoolchildren were chronically truant at nearly four times the rate of all students and faced suspension SEE CRIME PAGE 9

Scale it back Editor:
I saw the rendering of the 5th and Arizona project on the front page of your weekend edition and I really like the design. But my thumbs up for the design is totally dwarfed by my hatred for the scale of this development. Look at that picture! That building is way out of scale with everything else downtown and I don’t want this to set the new standard for downtown development. I don’t care how much money it might generate for the city, I want it scaled back at least 50 percent. Thanks.
Richard Orton Santa Monica
Opposed to the Arizona Ave project Editor:
Wow. The developers have made “basic improvements” resulting in such wise ARB comments about the project’s height, catastrophic traffic impact, an uninviting design and its overall large impact on the downtown area. I never thought I’d be found quoting Nancy Reagan but here’s the advice of a long-term Santa Monica resident, “Just say no.” I’m also curious about the statement that “many members of the public spoke in favor of the design.” How many members of the public were present? And what is the exact number of them expressing pro and con opinions? This proposed disaster of a building is outrageously oversized and a monstrosity to boot.

Looking into the crystal ball, I see … THE NEW YEAR HAS ARRIVED. BECAUSE
of the holidays, not much has happened in the last few weeks, but that’s all going to change quickly. We have a new City Council and we’ll have a new City Manager later in the year. The major challenge facing them is development. With the Miramar Hotel rebuild, a new 15 floor Wyndham Hotel and condo project near the Santa Monica Pier and 22 floor Frank Gehry-designed hotel/condo project at Ocean Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard pending, expect action on these major developments after two years gestation. There’s also the 12 floor Plaza at Santa Monica projected for 2.5 acres of city-owned property at Fourth and Fifth Streets at Arizona Avenue with entertainment plazas, offices, retail space, commercial work space, 48 affordable apartment units managed by Community Corporation of Santa Monica, a 225 room unionized hotel and 1,200 underground parking spaces. Specific plans for an enlarged and upscale Bergamot Station Arts Center will be unveiled this year. Watch this add pressure to reduce heights and densities all over town. This may also be the year that Residocracy.org circulates another ballot measure petition to limit building heights, citywide. In addition to a likely three floor maximum height for residential neighborhoods, the initiative could also stipulate a four-floor maximum height limit on major boulevards and an 84-foot maximum height (or seven floors) for future Downtown developments. This should receive overwhelming voter approval. The only questions are about the height limitations to be specified in the referendum and when Residocracy will begin gathering signatures to qualify it for the ballot in a future election. Although not showcase developments, there are a couple dozen mid-level projects in the pipeline, mostly in the Downtown area and along Lincoln and Wilshire Boulevards. These five to seven floor, 50 to 100 unit developments will add thousands of new apartments and tens of thousands of new car trips. They’ll contribute significantly to traffic congestion as well as exacerbate the demand for water, gas, electricity, solid and liquid (sewage) waste management. So far, City Hall shows no indication of slowing down the tsunami of pending midlevel developments because they’re housing projects with limited “neighborhood-serving” retail space. With developers eager to meet politician’s demands for more low income housing units in order to get their projects approved, stopping the flood may prove difficult. Another trend is the emergence of politically ambitious, mostly young agitators who don’t live in Santa Monica with an agenda to lobby for additional bicycle infrastructure, encourage bus ridership and more pedestrian-friendly streets. The coalition’s goal is to influence the political process. There’s concern that coalition members look at residents and those who oppose their ideology as “behind the times” oldsters. The young-verses-old situation reared its ugly head during the recent
election when coalition leaders embarked on a youth voter registration drive to bolster a young, pro-bicycle voter base to elect proalternative transit, pro-development candidates. This loose knit coalition is made up of local bicycling supporters as well as individuals involved in the Southern California Streets Initiative (SCSI), a non-profit, transit lobbying group that publishes the Los Angeles-centric “Streetsblog” and “Santa Monica Next” pro-bicycle/bus/pedestrian propaganda websites. Many of two dozen speakers endorsing a proposed seven floor, 262-unit apartment development at 500 Broadway at an October 14 council hearing were from this coalition. The pro-development bicycle coalition views the transportation amenities promised by developers in projects as a big plus. In return for endorsing developments such as the now defunct Hines/Bergamot Transit Village project and pending Plaza at Santa Monica, they’ve received backing and support from key developers and their lobbyists. Because of in-common interests, individuals associated with SCSI have also pursued funding and working relationships with established and powerful Downtown entities such as the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce and Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. The Chamber supported the coalition’s pre-election youth voter registration efforts and just recently, bicycle and mass transit cheerleader Juan Matute was appointed to Downtown Santa Monica, Inc’s Board of Directors. In their quest for real political clout, the SCSI/bicycle coalition is going to try to get at least one of its own on the Planning Commission. Three seats will be open this year. I’m betting that they’ll also run candidate(s) for council in 2016 as they strengthen their fiscal alliance with the development/business community. I say, “Welcome to the fray.” Also coming up this year is the Lincoln Boulevard Beautification Plan. Making this busy street (with over 40,000 car trips a day) more pedestrian friendly is a major goal. We should see specific proposals by year-end. The way the transportation planners work in this city, expect a potpourri of planted medians, more crosswalks and traffic lights, bus lanes (already approved but on hold) and other traffic jamming street alterations. And, when Lincoln traffic goes gridlock 12 hours a day, then what? 40,000 vehicles aren’t just going to vanish into thin air. They’ll be clogging residential side streets in both Sunset and Ocean Parks. By mid-summer, we should have council approval of the final updates to the post LUCE (Land Use and Circulation Element) zoning codes. If codes are promulgated that aren’t neighborhood compatible or scaled back in terms of overly large projects, more than a couple of council persons will be targeted for retirement in 2016. People are getting increasingly angry and frustrated. Therefore, I see one heck of a knock down, drag out year in Santa Monica politics. Buckle up.

AVOCADO: Some kinds of fat are better for our health than others.
www.SantaMonicaMiniStorage.com
Can fat be good? Dear EarthTalk What’s the skinny on fat these days? I saw a major magazine cover image recently that was suggesting fat wasn’t so bad for us after all?
Marcy Bellwether Taos, NM
GOING “FAT-FREE” MIGHT SEEM LIKE AN
effective, safe way to lose weight when considering that fat contains nine calories per gram, compared to four calories per gram in carbohydrates and proteins. But if you take into account the fact that approximately 60 percent of human brain matter consists of fats, eating reduced fat or fat-free foods high in sugar and refined carbohydrates no longer seems as appealing for our health. “The brain thrives on a fat-rich, low carbohydrate diet, which unfortunately is relatively uncommon in human populations today,” reports David Perlmutter, author of Grain Brain. “Mayo Clinic researchers showed that individuals favoring carbohydrates in their diets had a remarkable 89 percent increased risk for developing dementia as contrasted to those whose diets contained the most fat. Having the highest levels of fat consumption was actually found to be associated with an incredible 44 percent reduction in risk for developing dementia.” Granted, certain types of fats are more beneficial than others. “Good” fats include monounsaturated fats, found abundantly in olive oil, peanut oil, hazelnuts, avocados and pumpkin seeds, and polyunsaturated fats (omega 3 and omega 6), which are found in flaxseed oil, chia seeds, marine algae oil and walnuts. “In the ‘70s and early ‘80s … we were not talking about low-fat diets. We were talking about replacing saturated fat with a healthy fat, polyunsaturated fat,” says Walter Willett, professor of epidemiology and nutrition at the Harvard School of Public Health. “But somewhere in the mid-1980s, we lost that message. It’s perhaps partly because some
nutritionists felt it was too complicated to talk about different types of fat, and developed the notion we should just reduce all types of fat across the board.” With over five million Americans currently living with Alzheimer’s disease, researchers are examining which dietary fats may help prevent dementia. Olivia Okereke at Brigham & Women’s Hospital tested how different types of fats affect cognition and memory in women. Over the course of four years, she found that women who consumed high amounts of monounsaturated fats had better overall cognitive function and memory. A study by researchers from Laval University in Quebec revealed similar findings: Diets high in monounsaturated fats increased the production and release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is critical for learning and memory. The loss of acetylcholine production in the brain has been associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Unfortunately, canola oil, which is high in monounsaturated fats in its natural form, is often hydrogenated so it can stay fresh longer in processed foods. Partially hydrogenated oils - also known as Trans fats - were shown to be detrimental to memory in a recent University of California San Diego study. “Trans fats increase the shelf life of the food but reduce the shelf life of the person,” reports study author Beatrice Golomb. Of course, a well-rounded diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables may still be the best way to stay healthy. But it’s good to know that a little fat here and there won’t kill you. In fact, it might well help you live a healthier, more productive life. Morgan-Wixson Theatre to present God Of Carnage A playground altercation between eleven-year-old boys brings together two sets of Brooklyn parents for a meeting to resolve the matter. At first, diplomatic niceties are observed, but as the meeting progresses, and the rum flows, tensions emerge and the gloves come off, leaving the couples with more than just their liberal principles in tatters. The original 2008 London production was widely acclaimed, receiving the Olivier Award for Best New Play of the year. In 2009, after some minor changes to the English script to accommodate American audiences, a Broadway production opened, leading to all four lead actors being nominated for Tony Awards for their performances. The Broadway production closed after 452 regular performances and became the thirdlongest running play of the 2000s. Michael Rothhaar directs again for the Morgan-Wixson after directing “The Odd Couple (Female Version)” last season and “Plaza Suite” in 2013. Patterson also owns Geoffrey’s Comics in Gardenea, another long-time store that has survived the industry’s ups and downs. DeAngelini said the new owners are planning to build on the store’s success and have already begun opening up the interior to allow for more displays and potentially more special events. DeAngelini is a longtime comic book fan and he is financing his part of the purchase
through the sale of one of his prized possessions, every single issue of Amazing Spiderman plus the characters first appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15. “Although it was hard to part with the collection, the amount that it will bring will open up a new life changing opportunity,” he said. “I didn’t want to let his opportunity pass me by and I see this as a big stepping stone for me. I’m giving up something big to get back something bigger.” DeAngelini is selling his books through ComicConnect, a New York based auction house that specializes in comic sales. “We’ve known the consignor, Eddie DeAngelini, for a few years now and we’re thrilled that he is using the auction proceeds to purchase Hi De Ho Comics, the oldest comic book shop in Los Angeles,” said Rob Reynolds, Director of Consignments for ComicConnect. While he is hopeful he can rebuild his collection someday, DeAngelini said will miss the books once their gone. “You could say that peering into the empty boxes where my comics used to be is a little like peering into the empty hole in my heart,” he said. ‘The Hobbit’ tops box office for 3rd weekend JAKE COYLE AP Film Writer
NEW YORK Hollywood kicked off the New Year on a positive note, with three films vying closely for the weekend box-office title that nevertheless remained with “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies” for the third straight week. Peter Jackson’s Middle-earth finale took in $21.9 million for Warner Bros. in North American theaters, according to studio estimates Sunday, narrowly edging out the Disney musical “Into the Woods” ($19.1 million) and Angelina Jolie’s World War II tale “Unbroken” ($18.4 million) from Universal. The weekend’s lone new wide-release, the Relativity Media horror sequel “The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death,” landed in fourth place with $15.1 million. The first weekend of 2015 gave Hollywood the chance to begin turning the page on a rough 2014 in which box-office revenue slid 5 percent and attendance dropped to its lowest level in nearly 20 years. With a closely contested weekend at the multiplexes, overall business was strong, up 5.5 percent from the same weekend last year, according to box-office firm Rentrak. In its second week of limited release, Sony Pictures’ “The Interview” earned an estimated $1.1 million theatrically. A representative for Sony said digital figures likely wouldn’t be announced Sunday. In its first four days of online streaming and sale, the comedy made $15 million, Sony said last week. Since then, the film has expanded to video-on-demand via cable operators and on more digital platforms like Apple’s iTunes. Several Oscar contenders began to attract larger numbers of moviegoers, as Hollywood’s awards season picks up stream. The Golden Globes are Sunday, Jan. 11. Playing at 754 theaters, “The Imitation Game,” the Weinstein Co.’s code-breaker thriller about World War II hero Alan Turing took in $8.1 million in its sixth week. (By comparison, “The Hobbit” played at more than 3,800 theaters.) The Reese Witherspoon drama “Wild” also added $4.5 million for a five-week $25.8 million total for Fox Searchlight. Opening in limited release at four locations, J.C. Chandor’s New York thriller “A Most Violent Year” debuted with a theater average of $47,000. The acclaimed A24
CRIME FROM PAGE 3 from school at disproportionately high rates. “The evidence is simply overwhelming: A child who is chronically truant in elementary school is three times more likely to drop out and become a perpetrator or a victim of crime,” she said in her prepared remarks. “It’s time to say that in the state of California it is a crime for a child to go without an education.” A bill backed by Harris in 2010 lets prosecutors charge parents with misdemeanors bringing up to a year in jail and $2,000 fine if their children miss too much school. Brown approved a sequel last year, requiring prosecutors to report to school officials whether they file such charges. But Brown vetoed two other Harris-backed bills on the grounds that collecting more truancy and absenteeism data, as she proposed, “would not get to the root of the issue - keeping kids in school.” The bureau’s goals are in line with the
release, starring Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain, will soon expand. Demand, though, was strongest for “American Sniper,” Clint Eastwood’s drama about Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle (Bradley Cooper). In its second week playing in just four theaters, “American Sniper” attracted a remarkable $160,000 perscreen-average. The film opens wide on January 16. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Rentrak. Where available, the latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday. 1. “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” $21.9 million ($52.5 million international). 2. “Into the Woods $19.1 million ($1 million international). 3. “Unbroken,” $18.4 million ($2.3 million international). 4. “The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death,” $15.1 million ($3.5 million international). 5. “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb,” $14.5 million ($26 million international). 6. “Annie,” $11.4 million ($4.2 million international). 7. “The Imitation Game,” $8.1 million ($6.5 million international). 8. “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1,” $7.7 million ($5.3 million international). 9. “The Gambler,” $6.3 million. 10. “Big Hero 6,” $4.8 million ($20.2 million international). Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at international theaters (excluding the U.S. and Canada), according to Rentrak: 1. “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” $52.5 million. 2. “Exodus: Gods and Kings,” $31.5 million. 3. “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb,” $26 million. 3. “The Taking of Tiger Mountain,” $23.8 million. 4. “Penguins of Madagascar,” $23 million. 5. “Big Hero 6,” $20.2 million. 6. “Seventh Son,” $18.6 million. 7. “International Market,” $18.3 million. 8. “Paddington,” $12.5 million. 9. “Taken 3,” $9.5 million. 10. “P.K.,” $8.9 million.
“My Brother’s Keeper” classroom-to-jobs initiative outlined in September by President Barack Obama, whom Harris counts as a friend. The goals may include a push for more training of teachers, school nurses and counselors to help students who experience traumatic stress from domestic violence, poverty, substance abuse or mental illness in their families. Its focus on the child welfare system is intended to address systemic issues, for instance by targeting charities or websites that exploit adopted or foster children. Unscrupulous group homes, for instance, have been known to capitalize on the placement and care funds for foster youth. Internet sites with few safeguards have sprung up to aid the informal relocation of children, often adopted from other countries, if their adoptive parents decide they can’t handle the youngsters’ mental, physical or developmental disabilities. The bureau will be paid for with existing funds, aides said.

Nearby residents have long complained about the noise and pollution created by aircraft taking off and landing at SMO. Others fear for their safety, as the runway is located just a few hundred feet from homes. Many airport proponents claim that the Airport Commission is biased in its opposition to the airport. There are no pilots on the commission. “Because the impact area of the airport is small the impacted population is also small

in comparison to other exposed populations, a specific health study as a result would be prohibitively expensive and further there are several standard epidemiological techniques and methodologies that can’t be applied to the population” Paulson said, “and it’s difficult to do health studies there. As a result, arguments demanding for completely clear evidence that the pollution violates a standard or has clearly quantifiable health impacts are unreasonable.” Several people, including Commissioner Lael Rubin, questioned the legality of council regulating emissions. “I don’t think legally the city has the power to do this,” Rubin said. She did say she sympathizes with the concerns of residents. Paulson said that the ordinance is “more likely to succeed” than previous failed legal attempts to restrict use at the airport.
