Kirui, Lehonkova prevail in the fog in Los Angeles BY TIM LIOTTA Associated Press
Maybe off-the-rack running shoes were what Weldon Kirui of Kenya needed all along. Second in 2012 and fourth in 2013, Kirui pulled away late and won the Los Angeles Marathon on a foggy Sunday in his third try. After flying from Nairobi through Amsterdam, Kirui arrived Wednesday in Los Angeles, only to find his luggage containing all his gear had been lost by the airlines. His bags arrived a day later, but Kirui already liked his new shoes better.
“The new shoes were very comfortable,” said the 27-year-old Kirui, who raced shoulder-to-shoulder with Willie Koitile until making his surge over the final mile, winning in a time of 2 hours, 13 minutes, 7 seconds. “Two days ago I used them. They were very nice.” Kenyan men swept the top three spots. “The pace was very slow,” Kirui said. “We were talking to each other, saying, ‘Let’s go faster.’” Nataliya Lehonkova of Ukraine led almost the entire way and won the women’s race in 2:30:40.
“I was trying to run my best time,” Lehonkova said. “I did a lot of speed work and a lot of long runs every week.” Kirui and Lehonkova won over a course starting at Dodger Stadium downtown, winding through West Hollywood and Beverly Hills before finishing near the Santa Monica Pier. Kirui and Koitile pulled away as a pair with four miles remaining. Koitile was second in 2:13:24 after an injury flared up late. “I just didn’t have enough energy,” he said. “I have a pain in my leg after 20 miles. It was very difficult.” Defending champion Daniel
Limo finished third in 2:13:52. “My body was resisting, and I was not able to keep up,” Limo said. “Everyone came here in great shape. I was in a tough position to defend.” Serkalem Abrha of Ethiopia finished second to Lehonkova in 2:32:24, with Julia Budniak of Poland third at 2:44:44. The 33year-old Lehonkova pulled away from Abrha with five miles to go. The elite field started early under cool, ideal conditions in an effort to complete the race before temperatures got too hot. Kirui and Lehonkova each earned $100,000.

Local exec judging entrepreneur awards contest BY JEFFREY I. GOODMAN Daily Press Staff Writer
Whether he’s working in real estate, technology or health care, Mark Stagen has always held the same job title: irrational optimist. It’s the position he assumed when he ran a comic book store at the age of 15, and it’s one he’s kept as an entrepreneur over the last two decades. “If you work hard enough, it’s going to work out,” he said. “There are stumbles along the way, but I like to think that if you’re a good person and you work hard and you have a good head on your shoulders, it usually works out OK.” Stagen, a Santa Monica resident for about 15 years, is familiar with the challenges of starting a business and running a company. Council stiffs residents, again RESIDENTS LOST AGAIN AT THE POST-
Super Bowl brawl in City Council chambers last Tuesday night. There’s the sports amenity proposed for the parking lot at the Civic Auditorium favored by students, parents and others who would like a “regulation-sized” practice field that can be used by “some 1,000 students who participate in activities such as football, soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse, track and field and marching band.” Field advocates say Samohi has been critically short of athletic space and claim they were promised a sports field in 2005 as part of the Civic Center Specific Plan. The Civic Center is the wrong place for a bare bones practice field, however a compact, fully functional facility with some spectator/visitor amenities might make sense in the context of an assembly area for sports use or cultural events? Just askin’. Over the years various task forces, committees and working groups have proffered plans for the Civic Center. Almost all of them involve specific uses advocated by special interests. The result is a hodge-podge of unrelated and incompatible facilities being proposed with most parties insisting that their cause should prevail - good, bad or inappropriate. What was supposed to be a “New cultural heart of the City” - the area surrounded by and including the aging Civic Auditorium has become a chance depository of government buildings, Rand’s corporate headquarters, parking lots, a hotel, a massive, affordable/market rate housing project and a $47million public park. With the process of reinvigorating the area came those who demanded improvements include a childcare center, athletic facilities, affordable housing and hotels with related amenities such as cafes, cabarets or clubs. The only use apparently not supported by one group or another was a homeless shelter or manufacturing facility - although I may have missed those. What’s left is a bunch of crumbs and no cake. Unfortunately, there’s no focus, plan,
cohesiveness or consistent purpose to the Civic Center. Council seriously erred by squandering City taxpayer resources with approval of a giveaway of nearly two acres of public “recreational” land for SMC’s Early Childhood Education Center while not signaling a more positive go ahead for an enhanced community sports resource that’s more than a scrimmage field for high school ball players. Not fully approving a 2.8-acre practice field makes some sense because such a facility would alter the potential face of the Civic Center for decades to come. However, so will an ECEC and it was approved. The ECEC is tied into the college’s curriculum that finds Santa Monica taxpayers in the unique position of subsidizing an academic department in a state supported community college. In addition to giving away some of the City’s most valuable real-estate for a buck a year for the next 55 years (plus options), City Hall is kicking in additional millions more to help underwrite SMC’s construction and other costs. The ECEC project has been fraught with controversy over the years. Early Childhood education is a big deal with powerful leaders in the Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights political organization who’ve been calling the political shots here since the late 1970’s. As usual, cronyism and back room deals had major rolls in this latest giveaway of taxpayer’s assets. For nearly twenty-five years, City officials, Rand and residents have wrangled over development proposals for nearly 12 acres of Civic Center acreage purchased from the think tank for $53 Million in April. 2005 by the City. Among the many proposals was a shared early childhood educational center. Bottom line, we lose valuable public space for the facility No wonder the parents, families, community leaders, coaches, high school and athletic supporters are crying, “Foul!” Chalk up another reason to overhaul the City Council in November. certified organic or marked as “GMO-free,” odds are that a great deal of the food you eat contains genetically modified organisms (GMOs). But are you risking your health and damaging the environment by eating GMOs? Not according to Monsanto, the agricultural biotechnology company that is a leading producer of GM seed. Monsanto contends that GMOs are safe to eat and that seeds with GM traits have been tested more than any other crops in the history of agriculture-with no credible evidence of harm to humans or animals. The company also points to studies that have positively assessed the safety of GMOs, including the 2010 European Commission report summarizing the results of 50 research projects addressing the safety of GMOs for the environment as well as for animal and human health. In announcing the report, the Commission stated that “there is, as of today, no scientific evidence associating GMOs with higher risks for the environment or for food and feed safety than conventional plants.” Of course, not everyone agrees. According to the non-profit Non-GMO Project, genetically modified crops and food items can contaminate conventional crops and foods through cross-pollination and/or contamination. Also, since many GM crops are designed to be immune to herbicides and pesticides, farmers have increased their use of various weed and bug killing chemicals to keep competition for their cash crops at bay. The resulting overuse of these chemicals has led to a rapid evolution of “super weeds” and “super bugs” that can quickly take over
unmaintained or wild lands. Given the prevalence of GMOs in our food supply already, the non-profit Just Label It believes labeling everything that contains GMOs would be a start so at least consumers can choose on their own what they put in their bodies. Some 64 countries around the world-including China, Japan, Australia, Brazil, Russia and 28 nations in the European Union-currently require labeling on foods created with GMOs. Just Label It is one of many activist voices calling on the United States to follow suit. The group has created an online petition so everyday Americans can let the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) know that they have the right to know what’s in their food, especially when it comes to GMOs. But until we have federal rules in place requiring labeling, concerned consumers will have to take matters into their own hands when it comes to ferreting out the GMO content of what they eat. Luckily the Non-GMO Project is helping make it easier by offering verified products the opportunity to display its “Non-GMO” symbol on their labels. Currently the group has verified some 35,000 food products across 1,900 different brands commonly available on U.S. store shelves as GMO-free, representing annual sales topping $13.5 billion. Meanwhile, Whole Foods has stepped up its support of GMO labeling by instituting a new policy of “full GMO transparency” in all of its North American stores by 2018. Beyond just labeling, though, Whole Foods is also working with many of its suppliers to transition to ingredients from nonGMO sources altogether. Activists hope that this leadership will trickle down to mainstream grocers as well.

DUI FROM PAGE 1
with baseballs but with brief messages to the Santa Monica community and the general public about the perils of drunk driving. Wearing the caps of the teams for which they play, Skaggs, Giolito and brothers Tyler and Scott Heineman served as spokesmen for the Santa Monica Police Department as they filmed short public service announcements to help local officials address an alcohol-related problem that persists within city limits. Authorities enlisted the help of the talented Santa Monica Little League alumni with the hope that their collective star power will broaden the reach of the campaign through social media. The videos are one component of the police department’s “Choose Your Ride” initiative, which encourages people who have been drinking to pay for a cab instead of ending up in the back seat of a squad car. Throughout the year, law enforcement personnel try a variety of strategies to address alcohol-related issues. They use grant funding on checkpoints
to nab drunk drivers and enforce other rules of the road. They also work with the state Alcoholic Beverage Control department to catch adults who knowingly buy liquor for minors. During the recent holiday season, police placed a specially designed vehicle at popular gathering places in Santa Monica like Main Street the Third Street Promenade. The front half of the car is painted like a police cruiser. The back half is made to look like a yellow taxi. “We really did receive good feedback because it’s a great conversation piece, so we asked [Chief Jacqueline Seabrooks] to extend it as we go into Cinco de Mayo and Fourth of July,” Sgt. Rudy Camarena said. “These are celebrations where you have alcohol consumption, and we want to make sure we continue the message: to think before you drink. ... “the idea is that you choose your ride or the police will choose your destination.” Efforts by local police to crack down on alcohol-related problems are nothing new. More than 15 years ago, Camarena and his former police partner, now-retired lieutenant Steve Heineman, were assigned to investigate vice and narcotics crimes throughout the city. Several bars and other establishments with alcohol sales permits
were closed as a result of their work, Heineman said. “These places were taking an inordinate amount of resources and time,” said Heineman, whose sons play in the minor leagues. “It became a real issue.” Despite modest progress in recent years, drunk driving remains a significant problem in Santa Monica. Local police made 168 DUI arrests last year, according to department data, down slightly from 176 in 2014. And officers took 459 calls for service involving drunk driving in 2015, a dip from the 549 calls logged a year earlier. The message of the “Choose Your Ride” campaign is not lost on Skaggs, a Los Angeles Angels pitcher who said he has a few friends who have paid the price for driving drunk. “It’s so much cheaper to just get a cab,” he said. Giolito, a top prospect in the Washington Nationals organization, said he was happy to assist police to curb drunk driving. “It’s hugely important,” he said. “You want people to have their lives, to not risk anything. Especially with drunk driving, it’s a problem I’d like to see gone.” JEFF@smdp.com Photos by Jeffrey Goodman jeff@smdp.com

Young’s 30th annual Entrepreneur of the Year awards competition, which recognizes up-and-coming business leaders in a variety of industries. Organized by the multinational audit and consulting firm, the contest honors entrepreneurs in several different categories. Applications are due March 11, semifinalists will be chosen two weeks later and finalists will be announced May 9. An awards gala is scheduled for June 21. Winners from the Greater Los Angeles program will be eligible to compete for national and global awards in a program that operates in more than 60 countries. The applications will be evaluated by a panel of judges that includes successful business leaders as well as former awardees like Stagen, who was honored in 2007. “I was honored when they called me and asked if I wanted to participate,” he said. “It was an incredible experience for me to go through as a candidate. I figured if there’s a way I can contribute and help future candidates and winners, I’m happy to help.” Stagen, who grew up in Westwood and attended Brentwood School, took a roundabout route back to Southern California after studying at Yale University. He worked as a real estate developer in Nevada before moving to San Francisco to launch a tech company that he has since sold. He then moved to Santa Monica to start Emerald Health Services, a health care staffing firm, in 2002. Now based in El Segundo, the business began in an office near the Third Street Promenade. And as the company grew, Stagen heard about the entrepreneur awards program and decided to apply. “I was totally nervous,” he said. “I didn’t think I had a chance in the world, and all the stars lined up.” Stagen has kept busy in the decade since. He’s passed off the day-to-day management of Emerald, but he’s involved in the local startup scene and trying to figure out what

his next company will be. He is active in the Santa Monica Bay chapter of the Young Presidents’ Organization, a networking and professional development group for chief executives. A few years ago Stagen launched the Youth Business Alliance, a nonprofit organization that runs after-school business classes and workshops for teenagers in underserved communities. “A lot of these kids, they’re super-smart,” he said. “They just don’t have the role models and resources that I did.” As for the Ernst & Young competition, Stagen will work with other judges to evaluate the entrants and come to a consensus. He said it’s hard to narrow the field of talented professionals, although he sympathizes with entrepreneurs who started from scratch without millions of dollars in funding. “I’d compare it to the Academy Awards,” he said. “You could have a bunch of great movies up for best picture, and only one is going to win.” JEFF@smdp.com

Crime Watch is culled from reports provided by the Santa Monica Police Department. These are arrests only. All parties are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
ON FEB. 1 AT APPROXIMATELY 11:00 P.M. A witness was driving northbound at the 1400 block of Euclid Street and saw the suspect standing on the west sidewalk, next to some parked cars. The suspect appeared to be testing the door handles to see if they were unlocked, but stopped as the witness drove past him. The witness then circled the block to see if the suspect was still there. The suspect had walked further north, but tried the doors of two more parked vehicles; so the witness called the police. Santa Monica police officers arrived a few minutes later and detained the suspect near a Subaru dealership nearby. The suspect refused to tell the officers his name however. The witness positively identified the suspect as the person he saw trying to enter the locked cars, so the officers took the suspect into custody and booked at the Santa Monica jail for vehicle tampering and obstruction of justice. The suspect, identified as Daniel J. Morreti, 36, homeless, was charged with vehicle tampering. Bail was set at $10,000.

Sudoku Fill in the blank cells using numbers 1 to 9. Each number can appear only once in each row, column, and 3x3 block. Use logic and process of elimination to solve the puzzle. The difficulty level ranges from (easiest) to (hardest).
GETTING STARTED There are many strategies to solving Sudoku. One way to begin is to examine each 3x3 grid and figure out which numbers are missing. Then, based on the other numbers in the row and column of each blank cell, find which of the missing numbers will work. Eliminating numbers will eventually lead you to the answer. ■ Fed up with the “pretense” of the art world, performer (and radio personality) Lisa Levy of Brooklyn, New York, sat on a toilet, naked and motionless, at the Christopher Stout Gallery in January to protest artists’ “BS” by presenting herself in the “humblest” way she could imagine. Visitors were invited to sit on a facing toilet (clothed or not) and interact with her in any way except for touching. Levy told the Bushwick Daily website that too much “ego,” “like a drug,” “distorts your reality.” ■ In January, the U.S. Department of Justice’s inspector general recommended closing down a program of the department’s Drug
SHEPARD
Enforcement Administration that paid employees of other federal agencies (Amtrak and the beloved Transportation Security Administration) for tips on suspicious passengers. (The program apparently ignored that federal employees have such a duty even without a bounty.) DEA was apparently interested in passengers traveling with large amounts of cash -- which DEA could potentially seize if it suspected the money came from illegal activity (and also, of course, then keep the money under federal forfeiture law). According to the inspector general, the tipping TSA agent was to be rewarded with a cut of any forfeited money.
