THE TALKING IT UP ISSUE

City Hall: Quick response to multiple shootings saved lives BY DAVID MARK SIMPSON Daily Press Staff Writer

CITYWIDE Communication could have been better, but overall City Hall’s response to last year’s mass shooting that ended on the Santa Monica College campus was a success, city officials said in a recent report. The city of Santa Monica Office of Emergency Management (OEM) released a 28-page report about what was learned from the way various departments handled the incident. On June 7 of last year, John Zawahri, 23, shot and killed five people, including his father and brother, before he was fatally wounded by police in the Santa Monica College library. Quick response, particularly by the Santa Monica Police Department and the college police, was lauded in the OEM’s report. “Fast action [by both parties] brought an end to this incident in less than 14 minutes,” the report said. “The actions of many individuals were responsible for the successful outcome and this is due to several factors including training, organizational relationships, and a rapid response.” SMPD had recently done an active shooter training exercise. College library staff went through a similar training just weeks prior and it “most definitely saved lives of both students and staff,” the report said. Still, the report said, there were lessons to be learned. For one thing, SM Alerts, a mass notification system that sends out text messages during an emergency to anyone who opts in, SEE SHOOTINGS PAGE 10

Teen sci-fi franchise ‘Divergent’ debuts with $56 million

Santa Monica’s Boesch tries to reboot career with Angels

NEW YORK To go with “Twilight” and “The Hunger Games,” Lionsgate now has a trio of young-adult franchises with the box-office leading “Divergent.” The teen science-fiction thriller starring Shailene Woodley debuted with $56 million over the weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday. The opening, while less than some anticipated, launches Lionsgate’s third franchise built on young-adult best-sellers. With an audience 59 percent female and half under the age of 25, “Divergent” lured young moviegoers with dystopian drama and an upcoming star. “Divergent,” though, fell well short of its forerunners: “Twilight” opened with $69.6 million in 2008, and “The Hunger Games” began with $152.5 million in 2012. Richie Fay, president of domestic distribution for Lionsgate, called it “a great beginning for another franchise for the company.” A sequel is already in the works. “The key to the success of these franchises is finding the difference and marketing it,” said

TEMPE, Ariz. After getting derailed by injuries last season in New York, Santa Monica native Brennan Boesch is hoping that a return home will lead to a career reboot with the Los Angeles Angles. 2013 was a tough year for Boesch. He went from being a part of the 2012 American League Champion Detroit Tigers to being released in spring training to make room for star right fielder Tori Hunter. He slugged .523 in the first 23 games of the season with the injury ravaged New York Yankees before suffering a muscle tear, which later prompted the Yankees to release him to make room for Derek Jeter’s replacement. “I’ve been through a lot in my young career so far,” the 25-year-old Boesch said, “ups and downs, twists and turns and I feel like my best years are in front of me.” Boesch was a top-25 prospect while playing at Harvard-Westlake High School and an All-Pac-10 outfielder while playing for the University of California. New York Mets infield prospect Josh

Satin played with Boesch and is one of his best friends. Over the years, Satin witnessed his friend’s transformation from a boy to what he is today.

“I first met him when I was in ninth grade,” Satin said. “He was tall, lean, not that big. But year after year, he worked at getting bigger and bigger until by the time we were 20 years old, he was a monster.” After suffering numerous injuries, Boesch realized that his bodybuilding-like off-season approach has betrayed him and has prompted him to rethink everything and focus on being more flexible. “In the past it was more about bulking up and a lot of olympic lifts,” Boesch said. “[This off-season] I spent most of my time on shoulder and upper body flexibility. I had gotten overly built so I leaned out quite a bit. I changed my diet up, too, and just really paid attention to what I’ve eaten and be discipline in that regard. “Now I don’t care what the scale said. It’s all about being lean and flexible and making sure I have that flexibility so I can have a smoother swing.” It’s a smart move on Boesch’s part. New

York Mets superstar David Wright had his season hampered by a hamstring injury in August and as a result, he focused on making his equally large, strong, athletic body more flexible in an effort to, “make sure it’s a one-time thing and not a reoccurring injury.” “You can never be too flexible,” Wright said. “There’s so much twisting and turning and rotation stuff in this game that the more flexible you are, the better chance you have.” There are plenty of young outfielders trying to break camp with the Angels but that’s not the reality in Boesch’s mind. For him, it’s a competition with himself and he truly believes that when the April showers are bringing May flowers, he’ll be in the Angels lineup as an outfielder. “I’m a Major League starting outfielder,” Boesch said. “There’s only 90 guys in the whole world that get to say that and I believe without a doubt that I’m one of those 90 people on the planet. I’ll take it another step further and say I believe I can play at an All-Star level.” editor@smdp.com

Re “Full airport closure could take time” (March 20): Regarding the possible closure of SMO after the dreadful 1984 agreement expires, all I can say is that I hope that our City Council will have the cojones to do what Chicago’s Mayor Daley did with Meigs Field, namely to send in the bulldozers in the middle of the night and tear up the runway. Unfortunately, I seriously doubt that they will. But, just for the record, (Hey, candidates? Paying attention?) my No. 1 priority in the next election will be the full closure of SMO; and I’ll vote for the candidates who take a strong pro-closure stand on that issue.

Is SMRR late for the parade? OUR MUNICIPAL ELECTIONS ARE OVER

seven months away and I'm already getting queries about who may be running for City Council. This year, there are three (out of seven) council members up for re-election — Kevin McKeown, who has served four (four year) terms, Mayor Pam O'Connor with five terms and Bob Holbrook who has served six terms. McKeown and O'Connor are expected to run for re-election while Holbrook claims he's retiring. Candidates endorsed by the Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights (SMRR) political machine have a 99 percent chance of being elected. SMRR has a lot of political clout, mainly because they’ve convinced renters, who constitute about 70 percent of the voters, that if they don't vote SMRR, they'll lose rent control and face eviction or exorbitant rents Of course it's not true, but it works like gangbusters. Plus, there’s Unite Here Local 11 with its army of hotel union campaign workers knocking on doors and getting SMRR’s message out. SMRR's endorsements are determined at their annual convention, which is held in late July/early August. SMRR members (who've paid their dues and have been in the organization 90 days or more before the convention) can vote to endorse candidates for various locally elected offices. The big issue is development. Everyone’s attention is focused on the roughly 770,000square-foot Bergamot Transit Village project proposed by mega-developer Hines on Olympic Boulevard. SMRR’s steering committee finally voted to oppose the development a few weeks before it was to go before council for consideration. There’s a pro-development/slow growth rift within the organization which is why it’s been lethargic in responding to the growing public backlash against the huge amount of development already in the pipeline. Much to the displeasure of a majority of residents, a development agreement for the Hines project was recently approved by council. Three SMRR-endorsed council members voted to approve the agreement — O'Connor, Mayor Pro-tem Terry O'Day and Gleam Davis. Holbrook, who is not endorsed by SMRR, also voted in favor of it. Three SMRR-endorsed councilmen — Ted Winterer, Tony Vazquez and McKeown — voted “no.” McKeown will receive SMRR's endorsement for council as he is well regarded and is a staunch supporter of SMRR’s goals — housing (including affordable housing), social services, sustainability, living wages and environmental protection. O'Connor has lost popularity and won’t get the rank and file endorsement (as in 2010) or the SMRR steering committee endorsement, which comes into play only when the rank and file leaves an open seat unendorsed. Denny Zane, SMRR co-founder, former councilman and mayor and major SMRR power player, said he’d support the Hines project (density, traffic and all) if it had more housing and less office space. Unfortunately, Zane and a number of SMRR leaders, including most SMRRbacked councilpersons, don’t view thousands of units of new housing as detrimental in terms of traffic, crowding, pollution

and demands for resources. It’s idealism over common sense. Armen Melkonians (who ran for council in 2010) leaped into the political void with his new Residocracy.org. He promised an online people’s voice and a mechanism for organizing public referendums on developments and other issues. Within 24 hours of council’s 4 to 3 vote to approve the Hines project, citizens were hitting the streets with Melkonians’ petitions to nullify the agreement. Once again, SMRR leaders were late for the parade but managed to eke out support for the referendum. With two open SMRR endorsements, SMRR honchos are contemplating running Planning Commissioners Susan Himmelrich and Jennifer Kennedy. This is a classic case of what’s wrong with SMRR's leadership. It's not who the people want, it's what SMRR’s oligarchy wants. To start, SMRR should endorse Phil Brock, who is a long-time Recreation and Parks Commissioner, an early Residocracy supporter and a slow-growther. Melkonians says he isn’t running, but he’s popular, demonstrated a knowledge of community needs and is dedicated to residents, not an agenda. NO VACANCY

Wednesday night, the Planning Commission unanimously voted down an application by Palihouse (hotel) owners for an alcohol Conditional Use Permit (CUP) required for a California State Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control license to dispense beer, wine and spirits. Neighbors argued successfully that an alcohol CUP at the new, boutique Palihouse, located in the former quaint Embassy Hotel and Apartments at 1001 Third St., would exacerbate a non-conforming use -- a commercial hotel operating in a quiet, residential neighborhood — and substantially increase the hotel’s nuisance factor as well as exacerbate the already impossible on-street parking situation. Fifty-plus residents stayed late and spoke against the application, which was also opposed by all seven of Santa Monica’s officially recognized neighborhood groups. Nevertheless, one commissioner, Amy Anderson, suggested approving a more restrictive alcohol CUP — a motion that failed. Anderson wasn’t alone in missing the point by supporting a commercial business operation in a residentially zoned neighborhood. City Hall’s planners recommended approval of the CUP only with limited hours of alcohol service. Way too often planning staff, appointed commissioners and elected officials do the bidding for business interests and developers — all with extensive financial resources and high priced attorneys at their disposal. But aren’t they really supposed to be representing residents and protecting our interests? Here, we’re treated like enemies or ignored and that must stop. Will Palihouse owners appeal the commission’s decision to City Council? Is the Pope Catholic? Council will soon have an opportunity to decide whether the wellbeing of residents and our neighborhoods takes precedence over businesses profits. Maybe, just maybe, the tide is turning.

ried some 900,000 gallons of heavy tar-like oil was cleared Sunday of its remaining contents, a day after the vessel collided with a ship in the busy Houston Ship Channel and leaked as much as a quarter of its cargo into the waterway. Coast Guard officials said that up to 168,000 gallons were dumped and that oil from the ruptured barge had been detected 12 miles offshore in the Gulf of Mexico as of Sunday afternoon. “This is a significant spill,” Capt. Brian Penoyer, commander of the Coast Guard at Houston-Galveston, said. But he said the emptying of the barge Sunday, a process known as lightering as contents are transferred to other vessels, was equally significant. “The remaining risk of pollution, we’ve removed that,” he said. Over 380 people — “and we’ve ordered more,” he said — plus a fleet of oil-retrieving skimmers and other vessels deploying containment booms around environmentally sensitive areas worked to mitigate the damage. Officials said they had scattered reports of wildlife damage but no specifics. Some black tar-like globs, along with a dark line of a sticky, oily substance, could be detected along the shoreline of the Texas City dike, a 5-mile-long jetty that juts into Galveston Bay across from a tip of Galveston Island. “That is the consistency of what the cargo looks like,” Jim Guidry, executive vice president of Houston-based Kirby Inland Marine Corp., the nation’s largest inland barge company and owner of the barge, said when the substance was described to him at a news conference. “We’re very concerned. We’re focused on cleaning up,” he said. He said the company was taking responsibility for the costs. The barge was headed to a shipyard. The channel, one of the world’s busiest waterways for moving petrochemicals, was shut for a second day Sunday. As many as 60 vessels were backed up both trying to get out and get in. Penoyer said at least one cruise ship, initially socked in by fog Saturday, was being allowed to end its trip and return to Galveston. He said others would be handled on a case-by-case basis. Its path into Galveston would take it through a safety

zone defining the oil cleanup area. There was no timetable for a total reopening of the channel, which typically handles as many as 80 vessels daily. The Coast Guard and National Transportation Safety Board were investigating what happened. “It will take quite a bit of time, given the complexity of the vessels and a very busy waterway,” Penoyer said. The contents of the torn tank, equal to about 4,000 barrels, were lost or displaced into other vacant areas of the barge. Penoyer said currents, tides and wind were scattering the spill. “Containment was never a possibility in this case,” he said. Jim Ritterbusch, president of energy consultancy Jim Ritterbusch and Associates in Chicago, said if the bottleneck of vessels in the Gulf eased in a day or so, there likely wouldn’t be much impact on fuel prices. A more prolonged backup could push up prices briefly, he suggested. Crews were skimming oil from the water and deployed some 60,000 feet of containment booms to protect environmentally sensitive areas, the Coast Guard said. The area is home to popular bird habitats, especially during the approaching migratory shorebird season. Also closed was the Texas City dike, a popular fishing spot that goes out into the Gulf for a few miles. Lee Rilat, 58, owns Lee’s Bait and Tackle, the last store before the access road to the dike, which was blocked by a police car on a breezy, overcast Sunday. If it weren’t for the spill, Rilat’s business would be hopping. “This would be the first spring deal, the first real weekend for fishing,” he said. Rilat, who’s lived in the area most of his life, said ships and barges have collided before. He said he doesn’t think the spill is too big of a deal. The spill site is 700 yards offshore from the Texas City dike. A crane and several small boats could be seen at the cleanup site, and dozens of trucks were at a staging area along the beach. The captain of the 585-foot ship, Summer Wind, reported the spill Saturday afternoon. Six crew members from the tow vessel, which was going from Texas City to Port Bolivar, Texas, were injured, the Coast Guard said. Jim Suydam, spokesman for the Texas’ General Land Office, described the type of oil the barge was carrying as “sticky, gooey, thick, tarry stuff.”

CATASTROPHIC PERSONAL INJURIES WRONGFUL DEATH MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENTS BICYCLE ACCIDENTS SPINAL CORD INJURIES TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES DOG BITES TRIP & FALLS You Pay Nothing Until Your Case Is Resolved

Dear EarthTalk: What is the environmental impact of those “K-Cups” everyone seems to be using nowadays to make coffee at both home and office?

Chris B Stamford, Conn

K-CUPS — THOSE LITTLE ONE-SERVING

coffee containers that allow people to brew one cup at a time in a specially designed Keurig brewing machine — are all the rage these days. Each K-Cup is made up of a plastic outer container with one cup’s worth of ground coffee and a small filter inside, capped off with a foil lid. They go into Keurig brewing machines which pierce the bottom of the K-Cup with a nozzle that then forces hot water through the coffee grounds and filter, and then out into the drinker’s cup. K-Cups and the Keurig brewers are convenient and require little to no clean-up while producing gourmet quality coffee for a fraction of the price that a retail coffee shop would charge. Environmentalists’ beef with the Keurig system is in the single-use, non-recyclable nature of the packaging, given the implications for our waste stream. The individual parts of a K-Cup (plastic, paper and foil) could theoretically be recycled on their own, but the combination is too small and messy for recycling facilities to be able to sort. So our only choice is to throw the whole K-Cup pack, lock stock and barrel, into the garbage. Each pound of coffee consumed sends 50 KCups to the landfill. And with upwards of 17 million U.S. households and offices possessing Keurig brewers these days, billions of KCups are already ending up in landfills every year. Keurig Green Mountain, the company behind the K-Cup revolution, is on the case about the bad environmental reputation it is developing over the issue. As a first step, it launched its Grounds to Grow On program in 2011 whereby office customers can purchase K-Cup recovery bins and fill them up with spent K-Cups. When the boxes are full,

they are shipped to Keurig’s disposal partner, which turns the used coffee grounds into compost and sends the rest out to be incinerated in a “waste-to-energy” power plant. Critics point out, though, that waste-toenergy is hardly green given the airborne pollutants released from incinerator smokestacks and the fact that, in the words of Julie Craves of the Coffee & Conservation blog, recycling is the enemy of the never-ending stream of garbage needed to feed waste-toenergy facilities. In 2012, Keurig Green Mountain, realizing it still had a lot of work to do on sustainability matters, undertook a lifecycle assessment across its product lines-and set ambitious sustainability targets to achieve by 2020. Chief among them is to make all K-Cups 100 percent recyclable. Other goals include ensuring responsible sourcing for all its primary agricultural and manufactured products, reducing life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions of its brewed beverages by 25 percent compared to the 2012 baseline, and achieving zero waste-to-landfills its manufacturing and distribution facilities. Those who love the Keurig system but are ready to forego the environmental guilt sooner than 2020 do have some options. Julie Craves reports that used K-Cups can actually be refilled with ground coffee and reused. An easier option might be buying a reusable K-Cup-most of them are made out of plastic with a stainless steel mesh filter. Still the best choice for the environment, however, might be getting the old traditional coffee pot out of storage and brewing up several cups at once-just like the old days. Congress focuses on dams amid California’s drought KEVIN FREKING Associated Press

WASHINGTON California’s drought has sparked a new push by federal lawmakers to create or expand a handful of reservoirs around the state, ramping up a political battle that former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger once referred to as a “holy war in some ways.” Government agencies have been studying five major water storage projects for nearly two decades, with nothing to show for the effort so far. Meanwhile, the state’s water problems have only grown worse. California has had its third relatively dry winter in a row and court rulings have mandated that more water be released from reservoirs to sustain fish species in Northern California’s delta. At the same time, the nation’s most populous state, now at 38 million residents, continues to grow beyond the capacity of a water storage and delivery system that was mostly completed in the late 1960s. This winter is among the driest on record, forcing some communities to ration water and leading farmers to fallow thousands of acres that otherwise would be producing vegetables, fruits and nuts for the nation. The state Legislature is expected to debate water storage options later this year as it seeks compromise on a multibillion dollar water bond for the November ballot. But California’s congressional delegation has provided a jumpstart. Bills proposed in Congress would authorize a number of projects to expand or create reservoirs. Among the projects are raising the dam at Shasta Lake to store more water in California’s largest reservoir, creating a new reservoir in the Sierra Nevada along the upper San Joaquin River east of Fresno and damming a valley north of Sacramento. Other storage options include expanding the dams at the San Luis Reservoir in the central part of the state and at Los Vaqueros Reservoir in the eastern San Francisco Bay Area. Authorizing such projects through federal legislation would be a prerequisite for dedicating money to a project in the future. Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein said those who oppose new or expanded dams are hoping that doing so will deter growth and development, but it’s a losing battle. “Growth comes anyway,” she said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. “Then you don’t have enough water.” Feinstein acknowledges that conservation also is critical to meeting the state’s water needs but said some new or expanded reservoirs must be allowed so more water can be captured during wet years and stored for use during the dry ones. “They have a certain prior, I don’t know how to put it, stigma to them,” she said of dams. “But this is a different day now. And it’s a day that’s been coming for a long time. Somehow, we’ve got to measure up to it.” In California, water often is a shared commodity between the federal government, the state and local users. Feinstein is urging the state Legislature to modify the bond measure on the November ballot to prioritize both water storage and conservation. She would like to see $3 billion dedicated in the bond to developing storage, with an additional $2 billion set aside for restoring the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, the heart of California’s water-delivery system. Doing so would be intended to appease

both farmers and the environmentalists. No doubt there will be opposition. The $1 billion proposal to raise the dam at Shasta, for example, would flood part of the McCloud River, one of the most picturesque rivers in the state. It also would inundate several sacred sites of the Winnemem Wintu, a small tribe that is not federally recognized. In general, creating and expanding reservoirs are among the most expensive and environmentally harmful ways to address California’s water issues, said Doug Obegi, an attorney with the Natural Resources Defense Council. He said investing in water recycling, storm water capture in urban areas and similar projects provides a greater return on investment. He said he failed to see how the current storage projects would help California’s overall water supply, with so many reservoirs already far below their capacity. “It just doesn’t add up to a lot of water,” he said. Peter Gleick, director of the Pacific Institute and one of California’s leading water experts, said major dam projects “worked fine when there was new water to be had and when we didn’t care about the environment. But those days are over.” Republicans already have pushed through legislation in the House that would authorize construction for four of the storage projects. But the main thrust of the bill, sponsored by Republican Rep. David Valadao and co-sponsored by every GOP member of California’s delegation, would cease the implementation of a lawsuit settlement designed to restore salmon populations on the San Joaquin River. Water dedicated to maintaining fish and wildlife would instead go to farmers and communities who receive water through the federal Central Valley Project. That bill has no chance to pass the Senate in its current form. As an alternative, Feinstein and fellow California Sen. Barbara Boxer, also a Democrat, are pushing legislation that would give state and federal agencies more flexibility to pump water out of the delta to aid farmers, as long as the pumping does not violate the Endangered Species Act. But one aspect of the House bill Feinstein endorses is the call for more major storage projects. “We should have some federal authorization of dam projects that have a positive cost-benefit ratio,” she told the AP. The sharpest difference between the House bill and what Democrats seek is that the House version relies strictly on the state to pay for new or larger dams. Democrats say the federal government should help cover some of the costs. Rep. Jim Costa, a Democrat from the Central Valley farming region, said he doubts the projects will get off the ground without federal money. He has sponsored three bills — to authorize expanding the dams at Shasta Lake and San Luis Reservoir, and to build the Temperance Flat dam on the San Joaquin River. Cost-sharing arrangements, which he called crucial to the projects eventually getting built, would be negotiated later. Costa rejected the sentiment that conservation and recycling should be relied upon instead. He said the drought is so severe that every tool is needed. “You cannot recycle in enough quantities to irrigate half the nation’s fruits and vegetables,” he said. “It’s really that simple.”

NEW YORK Andrea Esteban tried to smile with half her face, crossing her eyes in the process, and her third-grade classmates giggled. Matthew Velez struggled to speak, “Luh, luh, uh, gronk,” and the kids erupted in laughter. But the funny faces, the gibberish and some arm flapping were all part of a serious lesson to help kids learn the telltale signs of a stroke by imitating them. The idea is to enlist children, particularly those who may live with older relatives, as an army of eyes to help recognize the warning signs, get help for victims more quickly and hopefully save lives. “If my mom has a stroke, I’ll know what to do,” said 10-year-old Madison Montes. “Run to the phone and call 911.” The experimental health education program at Montefiore Medical Center in the Bronx is aimed at the most crucial factor when it comes to a stroke: time. Each year, about 795,000 Americans have a stroke and about 130,000 die. Some are caused by bleeding in the brain, but the vast majority is caused by a clot that blocks blood flow, starving brain cells. The drug TPA can dissolve those clots and reduce disability but only if it’s given within three to four hours of the first symptoms, and the sooner the better. Yet only about 5 percent of patients receive it, in part because many stroke sufferers don’t get to the hospital in time for testing to tell if they’re a candidate. The early warning signs include a droopy side of the face, slurred or strange speech, and the inability to keep arms raised. “There’s a pretty good chance some children might witness a parent or a grandparent having a stroke,” said Jim Baranski, CEO of the National Stroke Association. “So if they’re armed with the signs and symptoms, they could likely save a life.” Montefiore’s program, one of a handful tried across the country, has been used since 2012 with private schools in its neighborhood, where children are often in a grandparent’s care because parents are absent or both working. The goal is to study the results and, if successful, replicate the program across the country. “The kids get a kick out of it because they get to do a little acting,” said Dr. Robert Glover, a neurologist who helped develop the program. “But when they’re done, they know about stroke and they can teach their families.” Dr. Kathryn Kirchoff-Torres, who led the class from St. Ann’s School in the Bronx, said the kids are already “little message

machines” bringing home from school what they learn about the benefits of exercise, not smoking and eating well. At the start of the stroke class last month, in a first-floor room at the hospital, the doctor asked, “Who knows what a stroke is?” “A heart attack?” one child offered. “Well, we like to call it a brain attack,” Kirchoff-Torres said. “It’s a problem with the brain.” She then taught the children to use the word “FAST” as a memory device. With cartoons and music bringing the point home, they learned “F” is for face, “A” is for arms, “S” is for speech and “T” is for time. After the play-acting and the multimedia show, the doctor invited questions from the children. “How do you catch a stroke?” one boy asked. The doctor assured him that strokes are not contagious but can be caused by “high blood pressure, smoking cigarettes, junk food.” “What if we don’t have a phone?” a girl asked. Kirchoff suggested asking a neighbor or running to a storefront. “What if you live in the desert?” was the follow-up question, to which Kirchoff smiled and said, “It’s a good thing you live in the Bronx.” After the class, the children were presented with pens labeled “FAST” and with pencil erasers in the shape of human brains, which were very popular. One parent in attendance, Jason Sawtelle, said he felt the lesson “plants the seed” “Maybe not every 8-year-old is capable of this,” he said, “but some certainly are.” Similar programs have been tried elsewhere. At Harlem Hospital in Manhattan, Dr. Olajide Williams uses hip-hop music to engage New York City fourth- through sixth-graders in three hours a year of stroke education. “Beyond sixth grade, the kids become a little too cool,” Williams said. But with the younger kids, “we’ve shown that these children can learn basic stroke pathology.” He said at least two children have been credited with helping to save lives. A similar stroke education study in the Corpus Christi, Texas, public schools used Tejano music. It was headed by Dr. Lewis Morgenstern, director of the stroke program at the University of Michigan Medical School. The 2007 study found that the youngsters responded well. “The data was highly positive in terms of knowledge about stroke and their intention to call 911,” Morgenstern said. “The earlier we can make people aware of stroke and that it’s arguably the most treatable of all catastrophic conditions, the better off we will be.”

FACES FROM PAGE 1 So I thought, what if I could live stream the audio to a warehouse in L.A., with the same light show and sound, would you guys pay a cheaper ticket to go? And they responded with, “Yeah, that sounds awesome!” So it started by just having a friend DJ in my apartment and we live streamed it to a nightclub down the street. Which was really fun, and just cool to figure out. Then I met my now business partner, Ben [Conway], who had a background in starting a company in college that did well. So I asked him to kind of help me build this into a business. It started with just audio and lights, but the artists wanted it to be more authentic and real, so we were like, “OK would you do it if it was a hologram?” We pulled it off, and everyone loved it. ERIK: SO WHAT MAKES YOUR COMPANY COOL?

Ashley: There are two things. Everyone heard about the Tupac hologram at Coachella, but their system is extremely cumbersome and costly. We started out using their system and it takes 10 people an

And on top of that, to create a holographic image you have to film someone in front of a green screen or an all black background. I wanted to be able to do live concerts or live events anywhere, so we hacked the Xbox connect, and we wrote software that lets us cut a person out of the background, or an object, or guitar or whatever, based on depth not on color, so that is patent pending software that we own.

this type of entertainment and bringing people who are restricted. China is very restrictive on who they allow to perform, but if we are streaming a live hologram it can be classified as something other than a live performance and they are much more lenient on that. So Snoop Dogg, Elton John, not allowed in China, but their holograms are. It’s a cool way to bring music into places were it is not allowed because of political or religious restrictions.

ERIK: WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE OTHERS WHO WOULD LIKE TO BE THEIR OWN BOSS?

Ashley: I love Santa Monica. The tech scene here is so great. This is where all the networking events are to meet venture capitalists, and to meet other engineers; it’s just the best place to network. I was driving up from Hermosa [Beach] three or four times a week and I was finally like, lets just move! This is just where everything is.

Ashley: Basically don’t take no for an answer and just keep asking people and going for it, and use LinkedIn [the businessoriented social networking service]. LinkedIn is amazing to help find contacts or even realize just what your network is. ERIK: HOW DO YOU THINK YOUR COMPANY WILL CHANGE THE WORLD?

phase.” Another hitch was the fact that some sections of City Hall’s Emergency Operations Center, which is meant to support the responders on the ground by analyzing and disseminating information, were empty. While the management and logistics sections of the center were staffed, the operations section was vacant because “members were in the field responding to the emergency,” OEM officials said. “This proved to

Currently, there are only a few SMPD police radios at the college. “Fortunately, during this event, one of the first responding college police officers had one of the radios and was able to provide critical information to the Santa Monica Police Department which resulted in the

BOX OFFICE FROM PAGE 3 Fay. “It’s not easy. And I think we’re doing it better than anyone else right now, frankly.” In the rush to adapt popular young-adult fiction, Lionsgate has succeeded where many others have floundered. “Divergent,” made with a budget of $85 million from Veronica Roth’s best-sellers, follows less stellar results from youth-focused films like “The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones,” “Vampire Academy” and “Beautiful Creatures.” Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for box-office tracker Rentrak, calls the “Divergent” debut a “three-peat” for Lionsgate in a challenging genre that defies “cookie-cutter, assembly line” development. “They make it look easy,” says Dergarabedian. “You’re chasing probably the most fickle audience in the world. They can change their minds on what’s cool in the blink of an eye.” Disney’s Muppets sequel “Muppets Most Wanted,” with Ricky Gervais and Tina Fey, fared poorly, earning just $16.5 million over the weekend. “The Muppets,” opened notably better with $29.2 million in 2011, benefiting from the high-profile reboot starring and co-written by Jason Segal. Dave Hollis, head of distribution for Disney, acknowledged the result was disappointing and somewhat “head-scratching” considering advance tracking had suggested “Muppets Most Wanted” would draw bigger crowds. “There certainly was something in the last Muppets — not having anything available for fans for a while — that satisfied pent up demand that we didn’t have the benefit of this time around,” Hollis said. The family film market was also more

DEAL FROM PAGE 1 therapists and surgical technicians, had planned to strike early Monday. The workers voted overwhelmingly to authorize a five-day strike after the hospital system decided to impose new contract terms that included broad layoff powers, Stenhouse said. It was reached after hospital officials and workers resumed bargaining Friday night

competitive than expected, as 20th Century Fox’s animated “Mr. Peabody and Sherman” has held better than anticipated. In its third week of release, the film — tops at the box office last weekend — slid to third with $11.7 million. Studios often seek out late March release dates for family-friendly movies to benefit from spring break vacations. So “Muppets Most Wanted,” made for $50 million, could still eke out more at the box office. The surprise of the weekend was the strong performance of the independently released “God’s Not Dead,” made to appeal specifically to faith-based audiences. It came in fifth with $8.6 million, despite playing on just 780 screens. The performance of “God’s Not Dead” further proves the strong faith-based market for movies, one historically underserved before the runaway success of Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ.” Next week, Paramount Pictures’ “Noah,” directed by Darren Aronofsky and starring Russell Crowe, will attempt to cross over to mainstream audiences with a Bible tale. Opening early in Mexico and South Korean, “Noah” got off to a strong start overseas, earning $14 million. Expanding from 66 to 304 screens, Wes Anderson’s European caper “The Grand Budapest Hotel” continued to pack theaters in limited release. It earned $6.5 million in its third week of release, with further expansion planned. And though the crowd-funding of the big-screen edition of cult TV show “Veronica Mars” drew much publicity for its successful Kickstarter campaign, the movie has proved only of interest to devoted fans. On 347 screens, it made just $144,000 for Warner Bros., bringing its two-week total to $2.9 million. and still must be ratified by union members, Stenhouse said. “Our members are looking forward to ratifying this agreement, returning to work, and doing what they do best — caring for patients,” Kathryn Lybarger, president of the local, said in a statement. University of California officials also welcomed the deal that ended two years of arduous contract negotiations. “There was true compromise by both sides,” Dwaine Duckett, UC vice president for human resources, said in a statement. “The agreement also allows our medical centers and student health centers to continue to deliver the quality care our patients and students depend on without any interruptions.”

SYDNEY Yasiel Puig and Paul Goldschmidt hadn’t left the stadium before workers began dismantling what was quite an impressive place to play baseball. For a week, at least. Home plate was dug up, the pitcher’s mound flattened and the eight-foot-high perimeter home run fence taken down within an hour after Puig’s Los Angeles Dodgers beat Goldschmidt’s Arizona Diamondbacks 7-5 Sunday. It was a two-game Dodgers’ sweep of Major League Baseball’s opening weekend at Sydney Cricket Ground. The Dodgers and Clayton Kershaw won the Saturday opener 3-1, sending the Diamondbacks back to the U.S. 0-2 to start the season and with the L.A. team holding a very early two-game lead in the NL West over their Arizona adversaries. The regular season will resume next weekend for both teams, with a few exhibition games scheduled this week while they recover from jet lag after the 15-hour flights Down Under and back. The cricket ground, and Australian baseball fans, meanwhile, may never be the same. Nearly 80,000 fans attended the weekend games at the 162-year-old ground in leafy Moore Park, minutes from downtown Sydney. Clearly, sports-mad Australia loved having the world’s best baseball players in Sydney. So did their rugby, cricket, soccer and Aussie Rules football stars who took time to mingle with Kershaw and Puig, among others, for photo shoots.

It was a mutual admiration society, with Kershaw posing on his birthday with a kangaroo and kicking around a rugby ball on the eve of his opener. Puig and Goldschmidt even tried their hand at cricket. Cracker Jack and two-foot-long hotdogs became part of the menu at the SCG snack bars, and MLB commissioner Bud Selig was non-committal about a return to Australia in the near future. Australian fans might like to see it sooner than later. Never were foul balls into the stands more heartily cheered, because they could keep them. In cricket, where balls are changed only after a predetermined amount of play, they must be returned to the field. “This event was outstanding, really cool,” Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson said. “The crowds were great. The preparation from the city of Sydney was outstanding. They treated us well.” Mattingly says a concern after the teams return to the U.S. will be avoiding complacency. They’ll have a few days off, then three exhibition games before returning to the regular season next Sunday for a three-game series in San Diego. “My biggest fear is when you start games, games that don’t count are tough to get ready to play,” he said. “And then you get lazy and you get bad habits. That’s what I will try to fight.” Regardless, Mattingly loved his Australian experience. “Your team kind of comes together on a trip because you really don’t know anyone else,” he said. “We document how far you’ve got to go, and how it changes our schedule, but at the end of the day you look back on it as a memory you don’t really forget.”

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) CANCER (June 21-July 22) ★★★★ Others often challenge you, and you find these contrary moments revealing, as they help you identify your priorities. You could find someone offensive in how he or she pushes for what he or she wants. A positive attitude will go far. Tonight: Say "yes" to an offer.

★★★★ You'll beam in whatever you want, but later you will have to deal with the implications of your actions. A family member could be upset by your choices and where you are heading. A discussion is likely to eliminate at least some of the problem. Tonight: Not to be found.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) ★★★ Pace yourself. Others seem to be obsessive, and you might want to derail the whole matter. Your instincts will help you find out more about what exactly is going on. Someone from a distance could surprise you and lead you down a new path. Tonight: Play it easy.

★★★ Step back from a problem rather than add to it. Given some time, the situation will unravel itself. You could be surprised by someone's efforts to reach out to you. Understand that this person means well. Listen to your instincts. Tonight: Take a break from everything.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) ★★★★ Your creativity will come out, even with a discouraged or pessimistic person in your life. This person has a way of getting your imagination going. Tonight: Pretend that it's Friday night.

Monday, March 24, 2014

★★★★ You seem to have walked into a situation with a lot of power plays, and you might be wondering why. Know what is happening beyond the obvious. If you attempt to enlighten others, they might be resentful. Tonight: Do what you want.

JACQUELINE BIGAR’S STARS The stars show the kind of day you’ll have: ★★★★★Dynamic ★★ So-So ★★★★ Positive ★ Difficult ★★★ Average

This year you open up to change and become more realistic than you have been in the past. You often take the lead, which is natural for you, but you become more controlling in guiding others toward a goal. Success stems from your focus and endurance. Learn to gather information before finalizing your decisions. If you are single, you project one attitude yet act in a conflicting manner. These two paradoxical dimensions could pose a problem in a potential relationship. Try to integrate these different ideas. If you are attached, as a couple, you find 2014 to be very dynamic and exciting. The two of you relate closely, especially come summer. Enjoy this period. CAPRICORN is stubborn but willing to do whatever is necessary to come out on top.

GETTING STARTED There are many strategies to solving Sudoku. One way to begin is to examine each 3x3 grid and figure out which numbers are missing. Then, based on the other numbers in the row and column of each blank cell, find which of the missing numbers will work. Eliminating numbers will eventually lead you to the answer.

SOLUTIONS TO YESTERDAY’S PUZZLE

■ The ecology-conscious city (having recently encouraged routine composting of dinner leftovers) is now considering environmentfriendly public urinals such as the PPlanter created by engineer Brent Bucknum. Users urinate into a ceramic basin and flush the waste with run-off hand-washing water into a bed of bamboo plants. Bucknum claims minimal maintenance and an odor-free experience, but on the other hand, only a user's midsection area is blocked from public view -- a concession necessitated by San Francisco's sour experience with lockable public toilets, which shielded sex acts and crime. (A less-elaborate structure -- the open-air, similarly privacy-challenging "pPod" -- is currently being readied for deployment in the city's Dolores Park.) ■ Branko Bogdanov, 58, his wife, Lela, 52, and daughter Julia, 34, were arrested in March and charged in a 10-year shoplifting enterprise run out of their upscale Northbrook, Ill., home, which they allegedly used as a base while prowling stores in states as far away as Florida, stealing high-end toys and jewelry, which they resold on eBay and to their fences. Police estimate the Bogdanovs swiped as much as $7 million worth on their forays -many items being stashed in Lela's customized flowing skirts with hidden pockets.

TODAY IN HISTORY – Archbishop Óscar Romero is killed while celebrating Mass in San Salvador. – Exxon Valdez oil spill: In Prince William Sound in Alaska, the Exxon Valdez spills 240,000 barrels (38,000 m3) of petroleum after running aground. – Discovery of Comet Shoemaker–Levy 9. – Jonesboro massacre: Mitchell Johnson and Andrew Golden, aged 11 and 13 respectively, fire upon teachers and students at Westside Middle School in Jonesboro, Arkansas; five people are killed and ten are wounded.
