Boys golf: Samohi freshman seizes league title MCDONOUGH LEADS VIKINGS INTO DIVISIONALS

BY JEFFREY I. GOODMAN Daily Press Staff Writer

SAMOHI Brandon McDonough called it a “rough season,” saying he felt like he was in a rut throughout the Santa Monica High boys golf team’s campaign. And then, at the Ocean League championships, it all changed. McDonough surged out of his slump at just the right time, winning the individual title with a 74-76 (150) earlier this month at Wilson Golf Course at Griffith Park in Los Angeles. “It was a dream come true,” he said. “To break through like that on one of

the biggest days of the year was pretty gratifying.” McDonough took first place by three strokes, holding off South Torrance’s Tom Milroy to win the two-round competition. And he did it in standout fashion, becoming the first freshman in program history to capture the individual crown. Vikings coach Barton Burdick said it was a landmark achievement, not just for McDonough but for the school as well. “It was a pretty special day,” said Burdick, a Samohi alumnus who has been involved with the school’s golf program in a coaching capacity for 16 years. “The potential has always been there, but that was a huge accomplishment. It’s

not too often a freshman wins a league title. It’s very exciting. He has a bright future ahead of him.” McDonough will lead the Vikings into a team divisional competition May 18 at Soule Park Golf Course in Ojai, where he and five teammates will vie for a top-two finish in an 18-hole tournament. It’s the continuation of what has already been a memorable season for McDonough, who spent time working on chipping and putting after watching a tutorial video over spring break. “The putter got quite hot,” he said. “I was able to get up and down from many different places, and having that variety

Historic hot dog hut to close for remodel BY DAVID MARK SIMPSON Daily Press Staff Writer

OCEAN FRONT WALK The origi-

nal Hot Dog on a Stick is scheduled to close later this year for a remodel, according to Kathleen Shaffer, the company’s spokesperson. The stand would likely close for about two months starting in November or December. The company hopes to make its flagship shack larger and compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act. Last week, after some discussion, the Landmarks Commission approved the company’s demolition permit. The shack, which is currently only 10 feet wide, would add an additional five feet of width during the closure, making it a still tiny 650 square feet, the project’s architect said.

It would have similar proportions and colors. “We’re going to keep it as nostalgic and kind of true to tradition as possible,” Shaffer said. “We know we’re an iconic brand. We love being a part of the Santa Monica community. The look will remain nostalgic to people. This is not going to be a complete overhaul.” The previous owners attempted this addition several years ago but they filed for bankruptcy last year and sold the company, City Hall’s Beach Administrator Judith Meister told the commission. City Hall owns the land on which Hot Dog on a Stick operates. The shack opened near Muscle Beach in 1946 and became the first Hot Dog on Stick when it changed ownership in 1948. It is the most successful location of the

nationwide chain, Meister said. “I’ve had a hard time with this over the past few days because this has always been a special place on the beach and I think it’s culturally part of Muscle Beach,” said Chair Pro Tempore Leslie Lambert when asked to consider the demolition permit. She said that, to her, it was “clearly a historic site” and said that she’d be more comfortable allowing demolition if she could be sure that the replacement building would have a similar look and signage. “You all think I’m crazy, right,” Lambert said to the commission. Commissioner John Berley pointed out that the commission couldn’t regulate what would replace the shack. “I’m not sure what it is we’re discussing,” he said. “I think we’re talking a building not a company. We can’t landmark a business. As much as we all appreciate this quaint little

hot dog stand on the beach, if the company didn’t exist then what would we have?” Ultimately, the commission agreed with Berley, opting to allow the demolition to move forward. The commission could have asked for more historical information on the building and opted, at a later meeting, to nominate it for City Landmark designation. It is much more challenging for owners to make changes to or demolish landmarked buildings. With the commission’s blessing, the project will head to the Architectural Review Board for permission to remodel. Should that be approved, the project architect said, the contractor would try to keep the venue closed for as short of a time as possible. Founder Dave Barham died in 1991 and left the entire company to his employees, according to Daily Press archives. Since the bankruptcy filing, it is no longer employeeowned, Meister told the commission. DAVE@smdp.com

A call for urgency amid climate change Editor: Imagine a world in which the Statue of Liberty, NASA’s Cape Canaveral and many other historic landmarks are underwater. This is what may happen if we do not do anything to reverse the effect of climate change. I am a high school student at New Roads School, which promotes sustainable living and preserving the environment. This year in science class, I researched climate change. My research led me to the conclusion that climate change should be classified as a national security threat. Unless we push our government and the governments of the world to reverse the

ross@smdp.com

effects of climate change, millions of people may lose their homes and possibly their lives due to coastal flooding in the United States and abroad. In Los Angeles, beach communities could be completely destroyed. There are many small things each of us can do to help combat climate change. Of course, taking the bus, bicycling, and carpooling are good practices, but by themselves they only prevent the problem from getting worse; these things by themselves are not going to solve the problem. In March, I sent a letter to Rep. Ted Lieu, Sen. Barbara Boxer, Sen. Dianne Feinstein and President Barack Obama urging them to create new climate change legislation. Specifically, I asked them to push for the creation of an international coalition of countries committed to lowering CO2 emissions worldwide. This body would

put stricter regulations on corporate and government carbon emissions, with the goal of lowering carbon emissions enough that global temperatures do not increase 2 degrees Fahrenheit over the current global average temperatures. We need our leaders to take big action to combat climate change. Like me, every Angeleno should write to local and national leaders on this issue. We need to flood the offices of our countries’ leaders with letters in order to prevent our homes from being flooded. Our leaders need to take action now. The longer we wait to take action, the more likely it is that the damage done due to climate change will become irreversible.

Bus(t) Stops Here THE DATE WAS AUGUST 17, 1999. ON the City Council agenda was Review and Approval of the Preliminary Design of the Santa Monica Transit Mall project. The ‘big picture’ decision that night was to formally commit to taking lanes out of traffic on Broadway and Santa Monica Bl., to create wider sidewalks (with cafe zones) and transit-priority lanes in their place. The Council also addressed street furniture — bench seating in the ‘arbors’ where people would be waiting for the Big Blue Bus (BBB), and additional mixed seating elsewhere on the Transit Mall from Ocean Ave. to 5th St. The preliminary designs contained contemporary wood slat chairs and benches with cast metal arms. The benches had the typical ‘anti-homeless’ dividers/armrests in the middle. As a Councilmember, I proposed an amendment to remove the dividers, saying they were unfriendly and anti-social. There would be many individual chairs for people who wanted to sit alone. Therefore it made sense to keep the benches open ‘for the sake of romance’ and couples who wanted to sit close, and ‘for the comfort of people of all sizes, and their stuff.’ This amendment was not deemed friendly by the maker of the main motion, who asked that it be voted upon separately. First-year Councilmember Kevin McKeown seconded my amendment, saying he supported ‘romantic cuddling’; adding that since the approved design would apply city wide, it would also be better for the neighborhoods to have “the added comfort factor of no dividers for their stops.” Mayor Pam O’Connor joined in support, stating she often takes the bus and sits on bus benches, and that the few existing benches with dividers were difficult to use when there were multiple people waiting. “Most of our benches are open and painted blue — simple benches,” she added, “and we haven’t had any trouble with that.” Councilmember Ken Genser said he had not been aware these decisions would apply citywide, and did not feel ready to make that kind of decision, especially without seeing a life-sized model. City Staff replied they were planning on producing life-sized models of all proposed street furniture for public review (including the arbors themselves), before any final designs would be approved. The main motion was then amended to defer furniture design decisions until these models were produced.

When the matter came back to the City Council in January 2001, the staff recommendation — which the Council adopted 7-0 — had evolved to supporting open benches, with the flexibility to add dividers only if experience demonstrated it necessary. Fast forward to our current community debate over bus stops and benches. The Bus Stop Improvement Project (BSIP) grew out of a lengthy process at the Council level between 2008 and 2013. New stops began being installed in 2014, and will continue until approximately 200 are completed by sometime in 2016. The BSIP brings many new amenities, from real time signage, lighting, shade and recycling, to Americans for Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance. But there has been a great deal of community opposition to the bus stop design - including because it eliminates bus benches entirely, replacing them with single person seats. In response, the BBB has made adjustments to seat design and placements, and added shade at low-volume bus stops. But it has not agreed to bring back back bus benches. The BBB website states the inclusion of benches in the new design “was never in the plans nor was a requirement given to the BBB by the City Council nor stakeholders consulted”; and that the BBB and the Santa Monica Police Department received many complaints filed by riders and owners of businesses about “loitering on the benches.” “As such,” the site continues, “BBB was assigned criteria for evaluating design proposals that included ‘imperviousness to loitering by non-riders and vandalism’, as difficult and uncomfortable as that may be to disclose. The [past] aluminum benches do not comport with the new design and its requirements.” The problem with this explanation is that the public policy making body for the City is the City Council, and the City Council never ‘assigned’ such criteria to the BBB. Furthermore, “imperviousness to loitering’ was not discussed during Council meetings, nor was it part of any written or oral staff reports to the Council during that period. Should it have been? If we are going to embed such ‘deterrence’ in our public spaces, shouldn’t this be openly debated and made as a conscious public policy choice, rather than by omission? If so, what can we learn from more than a dozen years of open bus benches on the Transit Mall? With the large number of people using the bus — and with a similar demand for bus stop

seating, few individuals monopolize the benches to the exclusion of transit riders. Elsewhere on the Transit Mall, some seating has been relocated a few feet because of its proximity to outdoor dining. But otherwise the combination of foot traffic, seating demand, and active management (on the Transit Mall and Promenade) has a moderating effect, and there has been no movement for dividers since the benches have been installed. With this correlation, open benches could have been reasonably considered for the high- and medium-volume stops under the BSIP design. But the Council was never asked whether it wanted to explore addressing rider and business concerns without eliminating bus benches entirely. The reality is that we are installing bus seats across Santa Monica that are uncomfortable and unsatisfactory to a large segment of our community. Many criticize the BBB for not supporting simple, open benches so many of us find to be functional, practical, and economical. But the current BBB administration inherited the basic BSIP design from the previous BBB administration (part of a process that has also gone on for years too long, in part because the Council pursued a custom design, which then required even more time to find a company to a fabricate it at a reasonable cost.) Under these circumstances, it’s not unreasonable that the BBB is trying to do the best it can with the design they inherited, rather than a major change at this point. That’s something more appropriate for Council to do, given that it was the Council that approved the ‘no-bench’ approach, even if only by omission. Back in August 1999, there was also no mention in the staff report of the ‘deterrent’ intent behind the proposed bench dividers. It took a Councilmember to raise and challenge that which ultimately led to much better public policy. But that didn’t happen this time. The anti-social premise was left unchallenged. Neither this time did a Councilmember insist that there be physical models for the public to review — models which would have previewed the public backlash, and compelled a debate about benches and overall approach when it could have made a difference, before a design was approved and a construction contract awarded. Where were these voices when they were needed? Where was the wisdom that reminds us that in the attempt to exclude ‘others’, the ones we end up shortchanging are often ‘ourselves’?

BLOOM’S SUGAR TAX LEAVES A SOUR TASTE

Our Assemblyman, Richard Bloom, came up empty with his attempt to legislate a 2cent-per-ounce sales tax on soda and other sugary beverages. Bloom’s Assembly Bill 1357 failed to pass committee last Wednesday. Yes! Pump arm! Bloom had proposed the tax legislation to help curb high rates of obesity and diabetes, especially in children. Did he really think that the roughly 25-cent tax on a 12-ounce can of soda would deter folks from drinking sugary drinks? The problem is that these kinds of penny taxes generally don’t curb consumption. If someone has a thirst for a 16-ounce Monster or a Big Gulp, a few extra cents isn’t going to deter them. Another major problem is that Bloom’s “nanny” tax was too simplistic because it singled out only one narrow source of sugar intake. Omitted were donuts and cupcakes, pastries, candy and ice creams and a whole roster of fattening, artery-clogging and diabetes-inducing foods and drinks. Bloom’s legislation also ignored behaviors such as exercise and levels of physical activity or a genetic predisposition to consume excessive amounts of sugar. Demographically, many of the highest users of sugar-laden foods and beverages are lower-income individuals. AB 1357, like so much well-meaning social engineering legislation, was discriminatory and may have actually hurt the very individuals Bloom was trying to help. His soda tax would impacted them economically far more than someone with more ample means. Ultimately, the badly conceived and written bill failed by a 10-6 vote. Except for some environmental initiatives, I’m not impressed with Bloom’s record in Sacramento. He ran virtually unopposed last year. Let’s hope, when he’s up for reelection next year, his race attracts some good competition so voters have a choice for a change.

their institutions. Schools, houses of worship and government. Jobs, stores, parks, recreation, cultural events and entertainment — all are a part of the fabric that allow us to work, play, learn, communicate and live in harmony with each other, together. In the past three decades, Santa Monica has changed from a community that was pretty much self-sufficient to a community of fashionable specialists. Growth and planning are predicated on what is “hip”, “cool” and “in.” We just don’t build office space, we build “creative” office space for the folks in the entertainment industry, who work in the electronic arts and create content for the Internet. New developments and the companies moving into them are viewed as money and tax generators. The more revenue generated, the better. But, have we grown so big and avaricious as a community that we can no longer afford the small, independent business that serve our needs because they’re not hip and fail to generate massive tax or fee revenues? Next Monday (May 25), demolition of a small industrial park at 2834 Colorado Ave., at the corner of Stewart Street, will commence. “Santa Monica Gateway” (formerly known as the Lionsgate project), with nearly 200,000 square feet of “creative” office space, will replace it. Since 1940, a variety of skilled tradesman and artisans located at that location provided valuable services that contributed to our wellbeing. My first visit there 30 years ago was to a mechanic at the TDR Garage who had built a replica of a 1930 Blower Bentley that I had recently purchased. Because it was fabricated on a Volkswagen Bus chassis and featured lots of custom body and mechanical work, TDR was the only place that could or would repair it. There was a genius in the same complex of sheds and garages who was a master machinist. He machined a two-speed gear shift for my 1940’s era Schwinn. Thanks to his good work, I rode that bicycle for years. Last year, Eric and Bruce at Santa Monica Plastics cut acrylic for me so I could customframe a number of original street art pieces purchased on a trip to London. Lucky for me, Santa Monica Plastics found a new space around the corner on Stanford Street. There were over 30 mom-and-pop-type services at Stewart and Colorado in its heyday. The few left have been evicted and are moving out. It reminds me of Montana Avenue 25plus years ago with its half-dozen gas station/auto repair garages, shoe repair shops and a number of small markets. They’re all gone now, replaced by boutiques that sell $325 pajamas and $228 designer jeans. Santa Monica policymakers don’t like the kind of non-glamorous, unhip services that contribute to a community. Example: car repair shops, smog stations, tire stores and the like are being driven out by high real estate prices and misguided planning policies. Following them are the plumbers, heating

US gas prices rise 22 cents per gallon The average national price of a regular gallon of gasoline has jumped 22 cents in the past three weeks to $2.80. Industry analyst Trilby Lundberg said Sunday that higher crude prices caused by a weaker U.S. dollar and strong gasoline demand drove the increase. However, she says the price was 93 cents lower than a year ago. The average national price for midgrade was $3.00 and premium was $3.16. Diesel was $2.97. In a survey of cities in the Lower 48 states, Los Angeles had the highest-priced gasoline at $3.95 a gallon. Baton Rouge, Louisiana, had the lowest at $2.32. The average price in California was up 53 cents to $3.76 a gallon. Lundberg says gasoline price hikes will likely slow or stop because of an expected increase in supplies.

continue to rise in the face of humaninduced climate change as climatologists expect, some of the world’s most populous areas could become uninhabitable. Rising sea levels will flood out coastal areas, while increasing drought will make survival in already arid areas difficult at best. While we may have at least a few decades of runway to prepare ourselves for the worst, advance planners might want to think carefully about where to put down roots now. According to the Notre Dame Global Adaptation Index (ND-GAIN) that measures and ranks 175 countries based on vulnerability and readiness to adapt to climate change, Scandinavian countries-Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark-just might be the safest spot in the carbon-compromised world of the future. ND-Gain researchers stress that residents of just about any developed country (including the U.S., Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Russia, China and most of Europe) will likely be fine staying put given the fact that better-heeled governments are already gearing up to adapt to warmer temperatures, more intense storms, rising sea levels and other expected changes. On the flip side, the worst places to be may be mid-latitude developing countries, including most of Africa and South Asia. The countries NDGAIN predicts will be hardest hit by climate change include Chad, Eritrea, Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, the Central African Republic, Sudan, Niger, Haiti, Afghanistan and Guinie Bissau. Americans looking for the best place to live domestically as the world warms should also look north. Alaska and the Pacific Northwest, both blessed with plenty of water

really helped my game. “Everyone had an advantage on distance, but I knew I could get back with my short game. I knew I could perform. I was confident going into that week.” McDonough went on to compete at the CIFSS Southern Regional individual tournament May 11 at Skylinks Golf Course in Long Beach, where he shot an 81 to finish in a seven-way tie for 78th place out of more than 100 elite players. The Vikings’ best finisher at regionals was junior Ricky Garcia, who tied 10 other players for 59th place with a score of 79. Sophomore teammate Noah Ogata carded

and plenty of terrain well above sea level, are generally acknowledged to be the best parts of the country to be in under a new climate regime. In fact, University of Washington atmospheric science professor Cliff Mass believes the Pacific Northwest will be “a potential climate refuge” in coming decades. He writes in his popular weather blog that Washington State could soon become the nation’s premiere wine production region as California’s vineyards continue to be slammed by years and years of drought. Meanwhile, UCLA environmental economics professor, Matthew Kahn, says that otherwise fading cities like Minneapolis, Milwaukee and Detroit will become more and more attractive as their counterparts to the south (Miami, Phoenix, Los Angeles, San Diego) take the brunt of global warming’s fury. In his 2010 book, “Climatopolis,” Kahn predicts that Detroit will be one of the nation’s most desirable cities by 2100. Other climate change winners could include Vermont, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana and Colorado. Not everyone agrees that Detroit will be the golden city of our future world. Author Giles Slade contends in his 2013 book, American Exodus, that we all may be heading for northern Canada when global warming’s fury really starts to kick in. “The safest places will be significant communities in the north that are not isolated, that have abundant water, that have the possibility of agricultural self-sufficiency, that have little immediate risk of forest fires, that are well elevated, and that are built on solid rock,” he writes. “Our northern lands are our Noah’s ark-a vital refuge against the moment of mankind’s greatest need.” EarthTalk® is written and edited by RODDY SCHEER and DOUG MOSS and is a registered trademark of E - The Environmental Magazine (www.emagazine.com). an 82 to take 85th. It was the first time in about a decade that Burdick took three players to the regional event. Huntington Beach-Marina senior Patrick Pockels won the regional title with a 67, edging Irvine-University’s William Tse and Irvine-Woodbridge’s Hidetoshi Yoshihara. McDonough wasn’t his best at the regional tournament, but his coach said he’ll continue to develop his skills over the next three years. “He’s not a big fella — he’s one of the smallest guys in the field — but that doesn’t mean he can’t hit the ball far,” Burdick said. “He’s a good player, and it’s showing.” JEFF@smdp.com

‘Pitch Perfect 2’ leaves ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’ in the dust LINDSEY BAHR AP Film Writer

LOS ANGELES The ladies of “Pitch Perfect 2” hit all the right notes opening weekend, amassing a $70.3 million debut, according to Rentrak estimates Sunday. The Elizabeth Banks-directed sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit and video-on-demand phenomenon cost Universal Pictures only $29 million to produce and was expected to open in the $50 million range. The first film, for comparison, grossed only $65 million domestically across its entire run. “It’s aca-awesome,” said Universal Pictures’ President of Domestic Distribution Nick Carpou, using one of the catchphrases of the film about a cappella singing. “We knew that the film would be a success, but there’s something that happens when movies grow in their success beyond a range that’s easily predictable. When that happens, the sky’s the limit.” Audiences for the musical comedy starring Anna Kendrick and Rebel Wilson were 75 percent female and 62 percent under the age of 25, according to Universal. Carpou attributed some of the massive success to savvy positioning and the widespread appeal of the popular music and the charismatic, diverse cast. He noted that ads during the NBA playoffs and a Super Bowl spot helped to grow the film’s audience base. George Miller’s critically acclaimed “Mad Max: Fury Road” landed a distant second in its debut weekend with a solid and expected $44.4 million from 3,702 locations. The high-octane, post-apocalyptic film cost a reported $150 million to make and stars Charlize Theron and Tom Hardy. Although it cost significantly more than “Pitch Perfect 2” to produce and didn’t come close to matching its opening, “Mad Max: Fury Road” still had a promising and successful first weekend in theaters - especially considering the fact that it is R-rated. “We’re very excited about the opening,” Warner Bros. President of Domestic Distribution Dan Fellman said. “We’re going to have some long legs and some great success on this movie.” The film, which also played in IMAX and 3D, is one of the best reviewed in the studio’s

history. Fellman said that many of the showings ended with applause, only adding to the hope that word of mouth will contribute to a lengthy and successful run. Audiences for the film were 70 percent male and 46 percent under the age of 35, according to Warner Bros. For Rentrak’s Senior Media Analyst Paul Dergarabedian, the weekend is an undisputed success for both studios. “Mad Max: Fury Road” also made $65 million internationally, bringing its worldwide total to $109.4 million. “Each film absolutely found its target audience,” Dergarabedian said. “They were running on parallel tracks, and both exceeded expectations by not cannibalizing each other. It was the perfect release strategy for two very different, high-profile films ... it really paid off handsomely.” Holdovers “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” ‘’Hot Pursuit” and “Furious 7” claimed the rest of the spots in the top five. After opening in China six days ago, the “Avengers” sequel brought in $185 million internationally in its fourth weekend. The film has now grossed $1.1 billion globally. Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Rentrak. Where available, the latest international numbers for Friday through Sunday are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday. 1.”Pitch Perfect 2,” $70.3 million ($26.9 million international). 2.”Mad Max: Fury Road,” $44.4 million ($65 million international). 3.”Avengers: Age of Ultron,” $38.8 million ($185 million international). 4.”Hot Pursuit,” $5.8 million. 5.”Furious 7,” $3.6 million ($6.6 million international). 6.”Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2,” $3.6 million ($1.7 million international). 7.”The Age of Adaline,” $3.2 million ($1.5 million international). 8.”Home,” $2.7 million ($4.5 million international). 9.”Ex Machina,” $2.1 million ($300,000 international). 10.”Far from the Madding Crowd,” $1.3 million ($828,000 international).

S T A F F

Crime Watch is culled from reports provided by the Santa Monica Police Department. These are arrests only. All parties are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

ON MAY 8 AT ABOUT 2 P.M. Santa Monica Police officers saw a man riding his bicycle southbound on the west sidewalk at the 1900 block of Main St. and stopped a short distance ahead of him to conduct a traffic stop. When the suspect saw the officers; he got off his bike and walked it onto the roadway, toward their patrol car. The suspect then told the officers he knew he was in violation of the municipal code, but aggressively demanded they let him go. When the officers asked the suspect to step over to the curb for his safety, he refused to comply and became very belligerent. The suspect also refused to give the officers his name or show them his ID, while also tensing up and looking as if he was preparing to fight. The suspect then attempted to resist being placed in handcuffs, but officers were able to control him quickly and placed him into custody without incident. The officers were later able to identify the suspect as Cory Lee Johnson, 31, of Los Angeles and issued him a citation for the violation before releasing him.

Sudoku Fill in the blank cells using numbers 1 to 9. Each number can appear only once in each row, column, and 3x3 block. Use logic and process of elimination to solve the puzzle. The difficulty level ranges from (easiest) to (hardest).

GETTING STARTED There are many strategies to solving Sudoku. One way to begin is to examine each 3x3 grid and figure out which numbers are missing. Then, based on the other numbers in the row and column of each blank cell, find which of the missing numbers will work. Eliminating numbers will eventually lead you to the answer. ■ In March, the U.S. patent office approved Google’s application covering robot software that mimics human personalities (voice, mannerisms) using a variety of moods (happiness, fear, surprise) with a notable use that family members might employ it to continue to “interact” with a loved one after he has passed. One disquieting possibility might allow a deceased person to be directed to act in ways that the person never acted while alive. ■ Prison breaks in Latin American countries are often staged with cooperative, corrupt guards. However, the escape by 28 inmates in February from the Nova Mutum prison near Cuiaba, Brazil, was engineered by three make-believe “dominatrixes”

SHEPARD

(in police costumes), who playfully handcuffed the guards, knocked them out with sedatives and unlocked the cells. (The guards were found the next day, still handcuffed and naked.) ■ David Morice, of Iowa City, Iowa, a teacher at Kirkwood Community College, was best known for a series of “Poetry Comics” until he decided (in 2010) to write 100-page poems (not prose — poems!) every day for 100 days, until he had a book totaling 10,000 pages (actually, 10,119). The University of Iowa Libraries published the finished book online, but for some reason, also in a two-foothigh hardcopy stack. In a 480-word article describing Morice’s feat, the Iowa City Press-Citizen included no hints about the poems’ subjects.

Strange Brew

By John Deering

TAURUS (April 20-May 20) ★★★ You might not know what to do about a problem that arises unexpectedly. Someone you deal with on important matters has become rigid and inflexible. Recognize that sometimes you are this way, too. Know when to stop pushing. Tonight: Use care with your finances.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21) ★★★★★ One-on-one relating will prove to be effective. You can’t always allow someone else to dominate as much as he or she would like to, especially in matters that concern you. Ask for feedback, and then choose your course of action. Tonight: Go along with a suggestion.

Dogs of C-Kennel

By Mick and Mason Mastroianni

GEMINI (May 21-June 20) ★★★★★ You have get-up-and-go. You’ll be nearly unstoppable once you decide to head down a certain path. Try to understand what is motivating you to push so hard despite someone else’s objection. How much are you driven by his or her response? Tonight: In the limelight.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) ★★★★ You could be stubborn right now and not even realize it when speaking to others. This attitude will color your interactions as well as the results. You might want to ask yourself why you are responding in the way you are. Tonight: Be responsive to a request.

CANCER (June 21-July 22) ★★★★ You might want to understand someone else’s motivation, as he or she seems to be pushing you hard, and you could be getting very angry. Avoid sitting on your feelings and letting this type of anger build up. Consider speaking up sooner. Tonight: Get some extra R and R.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) ★★★★ You are full of surprises, yet you’ll continue on your path, focused on your priorities and what you must do. Know that you will have to be a lot clearer with a child or loved one, as your words might be lost or misunderstood. Tonight: Pace yourself.

Garfield

By Jim Davis

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) ★★★★ You might have been a little too concerned with material gain in the past few days. Why not kick back and enjoy the people around you instead? You could discover that your friends will be delighted to share some news. Rethink your priorities. Tonight: In the spur of the moment.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) ★★★★★ You’ll look around and see how somber a friend seems to be. Be careful when dealing with this person, and be as clear as humanly possible. Confirm meeting times, and be direct in conversations. Others might not be on the same page as you. Tonight: Be naughty.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) ★★★★ You’ll be sure of yourself and will want to make a difference. Others, specifically one person at home, might be making the process unusually difficult, as he or she seems to have an attitude. Handle necessary work and other pressing matters. Tonight: On top of your game.

Monday, May 18, 2015

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) ★★★ A hassle involving real estate could rear its ugly head. You might wonder what you have done to deserve what is happening. Be direct in your dealings, and confirm that others have heard you clearly. An older person could be very hard on you. Tonight: Stay close to home.

The Meaning of Lila

JACQUELINE BIGAR’S STARS The stars show the kind of day you’ll have: ★★★★★Dynamic ★★ So-So ★★★★ Positive ★ Difficult ★★★ Average

This year you open up to unique and challenging situations. You will see your universe quite differently from how you have up until now. You also tend to be a lot happier than in the past. Self-confidence builds, and with it comes a sense that you can create what you want. If you are single, you will meet someone during the colder-weather months who will affect your life. To what extent will be your decision. If you are attached, the two of you will deal with a lot of different issues that life presents. Keep your sense of humor, and these events will bring you closer together. GEMINI has great ideas for how to spend your money.

Share the beauty inside you By Katharine Romefelt

On Mondays, ‘Celebrate This’ lets you make every day count No Dirty Dishes Day Monday, May 18 It’s easy to get lazy and let everything “soakâ€?. The task of cleaning is daunting. Clean up or just invest in a dishwasher already. Devil’s Food Cake Day Tuesday, May 19 Richer, darker and ufďŹ er than all the other cakes. Feed your desire with a double chocolate devil’s food donut at DK’s on Santa Monica Boulevard. Hummus Day Thursday, May 21 Hummus and pita: the perfect pair. Some shawarma can make it a party.

Wig Out Day Friday, May 22 Don a wig for the day. Something wild and vibrant. Mixing it up on the outside can lift your mood on the inside. World Turtle Day Saturday, May 23 Walk slowly and smirk at people. Wear a hood and stick your head out every now and then. Celebrate the turtle. Neighbor Day Sunday, May 24 People don’t reach out to their neighbors as much these days. Strike up a convo next time you see them or throw a spontaneous block party.

Every day should be “Turn Beauty Inside Out Dayâ€? (May 20) because inner beauty is what actually deďŹ nes a person. But having a day to recognize this truth is a good reminder to think before judging someone by their outer image and to focus on their inner qualities instead. “Someone with inner beauty is compassionate and has a positive energy. They’re easy to talk to and you can usually immediately tell that they have a good spirit,â€? said Brittan Louise, at Energy CafĂŠ in the PaciďŹ c Palisades. “I think it’s a combination of nature and nurture. “Some people have different traits

based on how they grow up or what they were born with, but I think things like empathy and compassion can be learned. Find a way to get in touch with your own inner beauty on Wednesday. Volunteer for an organization like Virginia Avenue Project or Free Arts for Abused Children. And start training yourself to turn beauty inside out.
