Local business Bourget Bros celebrates 70 years KATE CAGLE Daily Press Staff Writer
It all started with just $300 and an offer to buy a business. It was 1947 and Henry, Lawrence and Leo Bourget had just come back from WWII. To them, that $300 was a big investment but one that certainly paid off over the next seventy years. The money went to purchasing a concrete manufacturing plant on the corner of 10th Street and Olympic Boulevard. Just three years later the product line was already expanding. By 1950, Bourget Bros Building Materials was selling plumbing fixtures, masonry, landscaping supplies and tools as well as concrete. “The three of them worked their tails off,” the company’s current CEO Debbie Kanan said. “It was hard labor. It was literally making cement blocks down on that corner.” Over the next seven decades, the business changed hands from older brothers to younger brothers and eventually became a corporation. The three founders have passed away but their siblings John and Leonard remain at the helm as President and CFO. Their brotherin-law, Roy, had also been involved in the business but recently passed away after a decades long retirement. Kanan says the whole family would have been proud to see the company where it stands today, thriving on its 70th anniversary. “It’s a tremendous milestone for any company now,” Kanan said. “It’s kind of a cool thing to have such an institution here for so long that so many generations of people have come to. I don’t know where else you can find that nowadays.”

MAINopoly is back for Memorial Day BY MARINA ANDALON Daily Press Staff Writer
Everyone is invited to eat and play for a good cause on Memorial Day weekend when Santa Monica hosts the 4th Annual MAINopoly event on Main Street. What started as a simple fundraiser has grown into a destination celebration for that part of town and officials are hoping for another successful day on May 28. “The first MAINopoly came together four years ago while we were planning for the SOULstice, and we were looking for a way to raise money,” said Main Street
Business Improvement Association, Executive Director Gary Gordon. “Since then it has been an excellent event.” The spring into summer event will benefit the upcoming Summer SOULstice as well as the Santa Monica based non-profit Heal the Bay. “As a grassroots organization, we rely on the support of individuals and small businesses in our hometown,” said Heal the Bay Communications Director, Matthew King. “We are honored that the participating merchants

Orchestra Santa Monica concludes its fifth season with a premiere Orchestra Santa Monica concludes its fifth season with the premiere of Damian Montano’s Three Night Pieces for bassoon and string orchestra on Sunday, May 21. Montano will be the bassoon soloist as well. Also on the program are Haydn’s Symphony No. 22 (“The Philosopher”) and Schubert’s Symphony No. 5. Music Director Allen Robert Gross will conduct. Maestro Gross is excited about the premiere. “I’ve conducted two pieces by Damian over the past few years. He’s a very accomplished and talented composer, with a great ear for colors. And of course, he is a wonderful bassoon player as well.” Montano holds the position of Second Bassoon in the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, and is a soughtafter player in the film and television recording studios. He has composed numerous concertos for wind instruments, including a Double Concerto for Piccolo and Contrabassoon that was performed to great acclaim in Santa Monica a number of years ago. Montano originally wrote Three Night Pieces for full orchestra, but has created a string orchestra version for Orchestra Santa Monica. Haydn’s “Philosopher” Symphony is scored for an unusual wind combination of two English horns instead of the usual oboes, plus (French) horns and strings. The dark color of these reed instruments, as well as the slow, reflective opening movement (also unusual in a symphony) has given the symphony its nickname. Schubert wrote his Fifth Symphony at the age of nineteen, in 1816. “It is one of his most endearingly tuneful works,” says Gross. “Its charming, light-hearted finale is a lovely way to end our season.” The concert begins at 2:30 p.m. at the Ann and Jerry Moss Theater on the campus of New Roads School at The Herb Alpert Educational Village, 3131 Olympic Boulevard, Santa Monica. Venice POW/MIA Mural Restoration Unveiling Ceremony Celebrate the unveiling of the newly restored POW/MIA Mural in Venice this Memorial Day, Monday, May 29 at the Mural Unveiling Ceremony at 614 Pacific Avenue, Venice, CA. At 10:30 a.m., Councilmember Mike Bonin will lead a program celebrating the completion of the full restoration of Venice’s POW/MIA mural. The mural, which honors prisoners of war and those missing in action from the Vietnam War, was vandalized during Memorial Day weekend last year. The Venice Chamber of Commerce led the fundraising campaign that funded the restoration by SPARC, receiving grants from SoCal Gas, Snap Inc., and Venice Neighborhood Council, as well as contributions from numerous community contributors. Kelly Lane, Chair of the VCC Chamber in Action Committee, said, “The Venice veteran’s wall restoration project was initiated about three years ago, with help from the Chamber in Action committee. The premise of the committee, is to join chamber members with the community to work to improve our businesses & public areas. We are thrilled to see this project come to fruition with the help and support of our community.” Though sufficient funds were raised to complete a full restoration of the wall, $5,000 is still needed for the digital overlay which will provide a means for the mural to be moved and preserved. Visit the GoFundMe page (gofundme.com/POWMIAmural) and the Venice Chamber site (venicechamber.net/powmiamural) to make a contribution. The Venice Chamber of Commerce is an organization of business leaders who actively serve as advocates for the Venice business community. BOURGET FROM PAGE 1
The company has 70 fulltime employees split between Bourget Bros. Building Materials on 11th Street and Bourget Flagstone Co. on Colorado Avenue near 18th Street. Growing the business has not always been easy, and Kanan says the company faced lean times after the 2008 housing market collapse. “We kept people employed but we had to cut back their hours but they stayed with us those couple years and now back into regular operations and the doors never closed,” Kanan said, adding several of the company’s competitors folded during that difficult time. “We saw through that wave and we’re
back on the upswing right now,” Kanan said. “Business is doing well. There’s a lot of construction in Santa Monica.” That doesn’t mean it’s been easy. Bourget Bros has to compete with nearby big box retailers and online sales. Kanan says good customer service keeps contractors and homeowners loyal. “Eye contact, a warm greeting, and a big smile on your face - that’s the key to success,” Kanan said. It doesn’t hurt that many of their clients feel a tinge of nostalgia when they walk in the door. “We’re working with guys that their dads and their grandfathers came here to buy supplies.” kate@smdp.com

For nearly fifty years, Westside Ballet of Santa Monica’s Spring Showcase has delighted Los Angeles audiences and served as a premier performance outlet for young ballerinas launching into professional dance careers with major companies around the world. This spring, the legacy of excellence continues, as the company will present the next generation of classical dancers, along with guest artists Seth Belliston and Johnny Zhong, in A Jubilee of Dance at The Broad Stage at the Santa Monica College Performing Arts Center, on Sunday May 28th, 1 p.m. and 5 p.m. The program will feature George Balanchine’s virtuosic Tarantella Pas de Deux, which showcases two pyrotechnical dancers in an ever-growing profusion of steps. Opening the program are excerpts from Le Corsaire, one of ballet’s most classical works, including Le Jardin Animé and the famous Corsaire Pas de Deux. Renowned choreographer and Westside Ballet alumna, Melissa Barak, will revive her rapturous Concerto Italia, to music Albinoni, Torelli and Pergolesis. Yvonne Mounsey’s blissful ballet Masquerade will return to the stage, as the youngest dancers enchant the audience with an excerpt from Act III of Coppélia, as well as A Midsummer Night’s Dream, with the exquisite music of Mendelssohn. Four of our young boys will appear as sailors in Caprice Walker’s delightful Sailor’s Hornpipe with music by Hershy Kay. The program will close with resident Jazz Director Michele Bachar’s audience favorite, A Chorus Line! Tickets for event are available now at www.westsideballet.com/

cream and Café 212 Pier, Ashland Hill, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Pressed Juicery, Novel Café, and Beyond o2. Gordon explains that events this day in age are especially critical for business districts, which is why Main Street continues to host events multiple times throughout the year. “Yes there is a community aspect to it, but also an economic survival aspect to it. If the economy doesn’t survive the community doesn’t survive,” said Gordon. Which is why many Main St. businesses have got together to host numerous events that help the business district as well as the community. The event will include beer gardens, a Kids Zone at Books & Cookies, a “Go to Jail” location and a VIP lounge. Those who check off all of the locations on their game board and turn it in at the official after party will be entered to win a prize. Each ticket cost $25 in advance and $30 day of event for general admission. General Admission includes MAINopoly dollars to exchange for tastings at participating locations, food and drink specials. The event will begin at 3 p.m. and go through 8 p.m. and take place on Main Street between Pier Ave and Bay St. You can check in at Areal Restaurant (2820 Main St.) For more information you can visit http://mainopolysm.com/ . marina@smdp.com

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (May 22)
By PETER GALLAGHER
Strange Brew
By JOHN DEERING
Life’s interruptions will be your biggest blessings this year, especially if you cultivate calm and resolve to find creative solutions. Keep your awareness keen through the next six weeks. You’ll get signs that point you to money and red flags that wave you away from troublemakers. July and September are extremely romantic. Capricorn and Virgo adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 4, 49, 33, 39 and 16.
ARIES (March 21-April 19)
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23)
As desperate as it feels, you’d much rather hang around a person who tries too hard than you would one who doesn’t try enough. The trier will eventually relax into a productive groove, whereas the slacker will atrophy.
Chances are you will not have the luxury of a coach or a cheering squad today, but take heart. The results you get, whatever they may be, will teach you better than any coach could. And good results will encourage you onward.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21)
It would be easy to assume people are shallow today, because you are seeing only the surface behaviors of others who are struggling, as you are, to keep up a social discourse appropriate to the situation.
The great thing about your many responsibilities is that they don’t all need to be handled at once. Pace yourself. Also, when you’re around extremely capable people, you’ll feel more capable -- or maybe even super.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21)
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
The act of wanting will suddenly set up an invisible and very active energy field around you. Ask yourself, “Does this field seem to be repelling or attracting the object of my desire?”
People care about you more than you know and love you more than you want to know. To be so adored is a responsibility you don’t take lightly or handle easily. But take it -- and handle it -- you will.
CANCER (June 22-July 22)
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
“Fun” is not a universal concept. If you accept someone else’s definition automatically, you’re in for a rather tedious day. It’s not selfish to ask, “What’s in it for me?” In fact, everyone will be better off when you explore this.
There will be temptations galore today! You’ll definitely use up your wells of self-control if you stay in a place where you can see them all. A supportive environment will be your key to staying on track.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
One way to make the minutes seem to go on forever is to engage in conversation with selfcentered people who care nothing of your interest level in the topic or of the entertainment level of the delivery.
You can progress from point A to point B without hard work. Make no assumptions going in. You’ll most likely be able to progress through communication and the application of what you already know.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)
You’ll be hit by a very rare form of nostalgia, one that centers on a poignant longing for the here and now. This is how you’ll know you’re just where you should be.
What’s well within the rules may be nonetheless morally wrong. And the thing that breaks the rules may very well be the rightest and best thing you could do.

Teaching Moon The Aries moon reminds us that at any age, parts of us are young and in need of teaching. Your best teachers are irritants. This may seem so untrue to you that you are, even as you read this, dismissing the idea entirely, longing for a better teacher. But the things that make for an aggravating experience are loaded with the potential to grow you.

Spinach Builds Muscle And Other Cells
MYSTERY PHOTO
Matthew Hall matt@smdp.com
■ Researchers are steadily advancing in ways to regenerate tissue. The latest progress, at Worcester Polytechnic Institute, involves growing functional human heart cells on a spinach leaf. ■ Scientists stripped out all of the spinach cells, leaving behind a matrix of veins, which they used as a scaffolding for growing heart cells, with the veins also serving to infuse the heart cells with nutrients. ■ Now they’re exploring ways to build tissues of different sizes and shapes using broccoli or cauliflower.
