Local schools benefit from mall shopping
Special ed teacher retiring after 19 years in SMMUSD BY JEFFREY I. GOODMAN Daily Press Staff Writer
The mantras and phrases would resonate with the hundreds of students, families and colleagues who have interacted with Lisa Berezowsky over the last two decades. “I hear what you’re saying, but it’s not a choice.” “If you ask a question, you give a choice.” “ N e v e r BEREZOWSKY underestimate the children.” The sayings have become signatures of Berezowsky’s career as a special educator teacher in the Santa Monica-Malibu school district, a 19-year stint that will end when she retires after the end of the school year. Berezowsky — or “Mrs. B,” as she’s known in her classroom at Will Rogers Learning Community — said she’ll look back fondly on her collection of fulfilling experiences in the local district. “The families I have collaborated with have shown me tremendous support,” she said, noting that she’s been invited to the graduations of former students. “Some of these families still keep in touch with me, and I hope this will continue.” The transition away from SMMUSD will bring mixed emotions for Berezowsky, who said she’ll miss her students and teaching life in Santa Monica. After taking some time off, she said, she’ll consider working as a consultant in the field. Special education has long been SEE RETIRE PAGE 9

SMC Art Mentor Show “Amp 2015” Reception June 6 The Santa Monica College Pete & Susan Barrett Art Gallery will present “AMP 2015,” an exhibition of works by gifted students in the highly selective Santa Monica College Art Mentor Program (AMP). “AMP 2015” will combine two-dimensional works on canvas and paper with mixed media installational sculptures, video and audio works, and performance. The show will be open to the public from Tuesday, June 9, to Saturday, June 20, with a gallery reception on Saturday, June 6, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. The gallery is located at the SMC Performing Arts Center on Santa Monica Boulevard at 11th Street, Santa Monica. This year’s exhibition curator, Megan Flanders, has curated projects for the Patrick Painter Gallery, CSU Santa Barbara, California Institute for the Arts (CalArts), and Chaffey College. She is currently organizing an upcoming exhibit at the Brand Library in Glendale. The Art Mentor Program is a unique yearlong program for gifted visual art students, selected by SMC Art Department faculty. AMP was created to provide an innovative, experimental, and interdisciplinary environment for students to explore a variety of art forms, professional practices, and critical theory. Led by department chair Ronn Davis and faculty member Carlson Hatton, students experience rigorous critiques, interactive demonstrations, and exposure to a range of contemporary artists, curators, and other arts professionals through a curated speaker series and onsite studio visits. The spring 2015 group boasts a strong selection of emerging artists who will transfer this fall as third-year students to a wide range of art programs at colleges and universities that include UCLA and UC Berkeley, Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), Pacific Northwest College of Art, Harvard University, CSU Long Beach and CSU Northridge, and Otis College of Art and Design. The student artists this year are Melika Abikenari, Billal Ashai, William Ashe, Daniel Bae, Michael Bardales, Angela
Davis, Ramon Espinosa, Michelle Guthrie, Saba Hakimi, Jacqueline Kim, Charles McCrory, Nicole Noriyuki, Garen Novruzyan, Talya Petrillo, Eric Potts, Alicia Ramos, Lili Raygoza, Akim Safdari, Spaltro Serap, Amanda Sutton, and Yecenia Torres. Hours for SMC’s Pete & Susan Barrett Art Gallery are noon to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. All exhibits, gallery talks, and opening receptions are free. California State Board of Equalization inspectors to visit Santa Monica Staff from the Board of Equalization’s Statewide Compliance & Outreach Program (SCOP) will soon be visiting nonresidential retail businesses in the Santa Monica area. The Statewide Compliance and Outreach Program (SCOP) focuses on educating businesses, as well as identifying and registering businesses who are actively selling or leasing tangible personal property in California without a seller’s permit. SCOP also advises on other State tax and fee permits and licenses a business may need to obtain. In general, the purpose of SCOP is to: Educate business owners regarding their tax responsibilities, advise business owners when they need a seller’s permit, explain to owners how to report and remit their taxes and fees due, verify and update BOE account information, review business operations compared to sales and use tax returns filed to provide guidance on proper reporting, and Provide business owners the opportunity to ask questions. SCOP will monitor the ongoing compliance of newly registered businesses, reduce the number of businesses operating without a valid seller’s permit, and enhance the awareness of businesses on the consequences of tax evasion. At each visit, SCOP specialists will: Identify themselves and show identification, verify the need for and existence of a seller’s permit and other required fee
permits and licenses, review license/permit to verify that it is updated with the correct information, determine if the business is reporting its sales and use taxes properly, provide information and assistance to the business owner on sales and use tax reporting responsibilities, and answer owner’s questions. If the SCOP specialists find that a business is reporting its taxes incorrectly, they will advise the business to file amended returns or if the business has overpaid taxes, to file a claim for refund. In some instances, the business may be referred for an audit. The BOE has found that more than 98 percent of California businesses are operating with the correct permits. However, noncompliance contributes to more than $2 billion in uncollected sales and use taxes that make up part of the state’s “tax gap” - the difference between the amount of taxes owed and the amount paid, negatively impacting all state taxpayers. SMC Student Essay A Finalist In New York Times ‘Modern Love’ Contest Santa Monica College has announced that SMC student Jochebed (Jo) Smith was named one of the four finalists in the New York Times Modern Love College Essay Contest. In “Swearing Off the Modern Man,” she takes a deliciously witty, stripped-down look at the contrasts and overlaps in modern and old-school approaches to dating, developing relationships, and simple communication. “Jo’s voice really comes through in that essay, and so does her talent,” said SMC English instructor Joelle Adams. “I wasn’t aware that Jo was writing a piece for the contest, but I’m not surprised that she did, or that she placed as a finalist. She’s always stood out as a very engaged student, with insightful questions and comments. Jo has demonstrated determination and insight in all of her work for my classes.” “This whole thing happened because I
was browsing social media late one night, and saw a tweet about the Modern Love contest,” said Smith. “I thought, ‘Oh, wow! I have plenty of material to work from for this, and everything that hurts and is awful will be funny in time,’ so I decided to take the challenge.” An art history major at SMC, Smith never expected to be selected as a finalist in the contest. “I’m really thrilled,” she said, “because this is the first piece I feel I’ve ever really finished.” Smith works at the Hammer Museum, and her current favorite artist is British architect and designer Thomas Heatherwick. “But I love any type of creative expression,” she said, adding that her plans include incorporating acting back into her life. Smith said she enrolled at SMC because “I’m shooting for UCLA, and this seemed like the best and fastest way to get there.” Her goal is to apply next fall for transfer in 2016 to continue her studies in art history at UCLA. Smith’s essay online at www.nytimes.com/2015/05/17/style/sweari ng-off-the-modern-man.html - was published under the headline “The Allure of an Old-School Romance” - in the Sunday national edition of the New York Times (page ST6) on May 17, 2015. The Modern Love College Essay Contest - a feature of the New York Times Modern Love column dedicated to reader-submitted essays exploring the ups and downs of love - attracted works from almost 1,800 students from 489 colleges and universities nationwide, according to Daniel Jones, the column’s editor and the author of “Love Illuminated: Exploring Life’s Most Mystifying Subject (With the Help of 50,000 Strangers).” Santa Monica College is a California Community College accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). Since 1929, SMC has provided educational opportunities and special events to the public, including a Literary Series of talks by authors each semester, and the twice-yearly publication of the acclaimed literary journal Santa Monica Review, edited by Andrew Tonkovich. SMC is the nation’s leader in transfers to the University of California. - SUBMITTED BY GRACE SMITH

Summertime meals Editor:
Summertime is always filled with fun, laughter, and contentment. However, that may not be the case for all children. In fact, for millions of children, summer vacation can unfortunately be a time of stress and anxiety. Many low-income children, who rely on school meals, don’t have access to it while schools close during summer vacation. This causes them to worry about not getting enough food over the summer. Lucky for them, the Federal Summer Meals program supports kids at risk of hunger receive healthy food when school is out. Families in need of free summer meals for kids and teens can text ‘FOOD’ to 877-877 or call 1-866-3HUNGRY to find a site that serves free meals near them. I am proud to be part of the national effort to connect more kids with summer meals and I encourage everyone to raise awareness about this crucial issue.

Encountering the police SANTA MONICA IS IN THE NEWS AGAIN.
It began Tuesday, April 21 when officers from the Santa Monica Police Department arrested Justin Leland Palmer a Santa Monica resident at a free Virginia Park electric vehicle charging station. Palmer was allegedly in the park after park closure hours - a violation of municipal code. In addition, the electric charging stations are supposed to close at 8 p.m., even though it is apparently not uncommon for E-car owners to charge their vehicles well into the night. Palmer told officers that he had been waiting a long time to use the charger and was reluctant to leave although other E-car owners were departing the charging area in response to officers’ request. According to Sergeant Rudy Camarena in a statement published in this newspaper, (“Police pepper spray man for refusing to leave Virginia Ave. Park,” April 28, Page 1), “Palmer refused to leave the charging station and after making multiple requests for him to leave, officers decided to issue Palmer a citation. Palmer refused to provide his identification as part of the citation process, at which point officers decided to make an arrest for obstructing an officer and violating the posted hours of the park.” A statement issued by the SMPD after the incident stated “During the arrest, the subject actively resisted. Officers deployed pepper spray and physically restrained him. The subject was taken to Santa Monica Public Safety Facility where he was fingerprinted and booked. At the Santa Monica Jail the subject complained of pain. He was transported to the Santa Monica Hospital for treatment and was medically cleared. The subject was subsequently issued a citation (for violating the city’s park closure ordinance and delaying and obstructing officers in the performance of their duties) and released.” Palmer has retained an attorney and filed an excessive force claim against the City of Santa Monica on May 8. The claim is a precursor of a lawsuit. And, the Santa Monica City Attorney’s Office has since declined to pursue the case in court. Police officers spend a great deal of their time dealing with complaints about persons violating minor municipal ordinances such as camping in public, trespassing on private property, littering, interfering in a public business, jaywalking, tents on the beach and smoking in public parks. There are noise and nuisance ordinances, riding bicycles on sidewalks is prohibited and there are laws against being in city parks between specified hours. The list goes on and on. When the police show up, it is their duty to uphold the law no matter how unfair or unreasonable we may think it is. So, what are your rights and responsibilities? I found these tips in a free pamphlet assembled by the NAACP Pittsburgh (PA) unit, Black Political Empowerment Project, University of Pittsburgh School of Law plus other contributors and widely distributed by the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police: RIGHTS & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. The police can stop and question you if they have reasonable suspicion that you have done something illegal. In such a stop, they can “pat-down” your clothing to check for a concealed weapon if they suspect you have
one. Do not physically resist, but make it clear that you do not consent to any further search. 2. You are not legally required to answer a police officer’s questions. You cannot legally be arrested just for refusing to answer questions or to identify yourself to a police officer. But if you are arrested or cited, failure to identify yourself can lead to additional charges or to you being detained when you might otherwise get only a citation. 3. What you say to the police is always important. What you say can be used against you, and it can cause the police to arrest you. 4. You do not have to consent to any search of yourself, your possessions, your car or your home. If you do not consent to a search, be sure to tell the police. If you do consent to a search, it can affect your rights later in court. 5. If the police say they have a search warrant, ask to see it and check to make sure that it lists the right person or address. 6. Do not interfere with, or obstruct, the police; you can be arrested for it. 7. You have a right to record (audio and video) police activity so long as you can do so safely and do not physically interfere with their work. REALITY
1. Be polite and respectful. Although “bad mouthing” or criticizing a police officer may be legally protected speech, it is not recommended and might cause you problems. 2. Stay calm, control what you say, as well as your body language and emotions. 3. Don’t get into an argument with the police. 4. Keep your hands where the police can see them. Don’t make any sudden movements. 5. Don’t ever touch a police officer. 6. Don’t run. 7. Even though refusing to answer questions is not a crime, it can make the police suspicious about you. If you do decide to talk, remember, anything you say can be used against you. 8. Don’t resist even if you believe you are innocent. 9. Don’t interfere when an officer is doing his or her job. 10. If you believe that you have been the victim of police misconduct: a. Don’t complain or tell the police that they are wrong or that you will file a complaint against them. b. Remember the officers’ names, badge numbers and/or patrol car numbers. If the names or badge numbers are not visible, you may politely ask the officer for the information. c. Write down everything you can remember as soon as you can. Memories fade quickly. d. Try to find witnesses. Try to get their names, email addresses and phone numbers. e. lf you are injured, take photographs of the injuries as soon as possible, get medical attention, and tell the doctor what happened.

mother struggle with cancer made him want to learn as much as possible in the medical field as a way of advocating for her. She later died shortly into his freshman year of college at SUNY Orange, but he felt at peace with it. “It was almost like she knew I was going to be okay,” Benzaia said. “I was enrolled in school and on the right track.” Shortly upon earning his X-ray tech certification he worked to become a CT-tech, which he got after graduating with a degree in radiological sciences at Manhattan College. He finally topped it all off with a masters degree in health care administration at Nyack College in Hudson Valley, NY. Medicine and acting serve as perfect balance for Benzaia: medicine being the mind and acting/creating being the heart, all swirling around with the LA environment cultivating his soul. “My heart is in the acting world,” Benzaia said. “That’s where my passion is. I love creating and in the medical world, you don’t create. I don’t go, ‘Maybe I’ll do it this way.’ No, this is the way you do it or else this person is going to die.” Benzaia has had his fair share of roles in medial shows including playing a doctor in an episode of the Mindy Project - also a double for Chris Messina and a resident doctor on the show. He was also on CBS’ the Doctors, which he considers to be the medical role that brings out the most pride because he was a host that brought actual knowledge for the viewers about the world they lived in. But for every one of those gold stars on the IMDB, there are many more medical dramas that just drove him crazy watching it. Medical dramas as a genre are insufferable to watch for Benzaia, who was on set for a few of them with TLC and at one point saw the X-rays upside down. Even though he is on scholarship at the Stellar Adler Academy, Benzaia has also had work in the grimy, pyrite world of reality television. Those who consider themselves as serious actors look down on the realm of
reality as the bastardization of their craft. Benzaia however, entered that realm with youthful and reckless abandon - one of the few to do so with a Stella Alder scholarship. He saw the benefits of playing with reality pour in from powerful connections in entertainment to a social media following which led to signing an agent to, most importantly, money to pay off student debt and pay for acting classes. That includes competing in an effort to win the big cash prize in survivor shows like USA’s Summer Camp. “I went there to win,” Benzaia said. “Acting classes are expensive.” While working on both scripted and nonscripted projects, Benzaia created a way to separate himself from the two realms. His scripted work, like his cameo as a pink shirtwearing bowler in a funny episode in ABC’s Modern Family, gets the first name “Michael.” His unscripted work gets “Mikey.” “I always know how people know me from,” Benzaia said. Never let the roles in reality fool you and make you question Benzaia’s passion in acting. He can sometime be seen in public working on monologues and building his character without the care in the world that he looks like a psychotic person, with the level of crazy usually reserved for the hobos stalking the streets of Santa Monica Boulevard. He sometimes also does it while working out at the gym. Imagine walking into the steam room at your local gym and being greeted with a guy wearing nothing but a towel reciting a monologue. “I go over my characters backstory and people watch and learn behaviors and take what I want for my own character,” Benzaia said. “I build the character at the gym and on the street.” Benzaia’s life is a life similar to that of Mayim Bialik who plays the role of Sheldon’s equally nerdy girlfriend in the hit TBS sitcom, The Big Bang Theory, but in real life, is also a neurologist. Benzaia said that through his run of interviewing celebrities as an After Buzz host, Bialik is his favorite to interview because of the similarities they share in both science and acting.

Dear EarthTalk It seems like I’m getting more junk mail than ever these days. How can I stop the deluge?
Houston, TX
First of all, you’re probably right! Junk mail has increased to a massive scale in recent years, with the average American receiving 16 pieces each week. While this might not seem like much, it adds up to weigh an estimated 41 pounds each year, according to leading anti-junk mail organization, 41pounds.org.

What’s more, 44 percent of it is never opened, though the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates only about 40 percent is recycled properly. This enormous waste of paper has triggered the U.S. Postal Service to install over 4,000 postal recycling stations around the country. From a financial perspective, nearly $320 million of local tax money is used to dispose of and recycle of junk mail each year. However, junk mail has environmental repercussions on a larger scale than individual inconvenience or waste of tax money. The paper for these mailings comes from more than 100 million trees each year. Not only does this cause deforestation and other direct problems to the local environment, it also creates an imbalance of the planet’s carbon levels. While forests usually act as “carbon sinks” to maintain constant levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, chopping down these trees and converting them into paper emits this stored carbon prematurely back into the atmosphere. On top of that, according to 41pounds.org, the carbon emissions from junk mailings each year are roughly equivalent to those of nine million cars.
ForestEthics.org, another leader in the charge against junk mail, estimates that junk mail produces 51.5 million metric tons of greenhouse gases each year. Ciara O’Rourke reports in The New York Times that this is roughly the same amount of emissions produced by heating 13 million homes in the winter. ForestEthics’ report, “Climate Change Enclosed,” likens junk mail’s carbon burden to 2.4 million cars idling 24/7 yearround. Another negative impact of junk mail is the water waste it creates. As drought becomes an increasingly important problem across the country, Americans continue to waste upwards of 28 billion gallons of water on junk mail production and recycling every year. Thankfully, these enormous environmental costs can easily be reduced by taking basic steps to get off mailing lists. By registering at 41pounds.org, junk mailings can be reduced by 80-95 percent for $41. Similar to a no-call list for telemarketers, you can also opt out of these mailing lists at catologchoice.org. By contacting dozens of these mailers directly, these organizations aim to eliminate junk mail waste. After five years, 41pounds.org estimates “you’ll conserve 1.7 trees and 700 gallons of water, and prevent global warming emissions-and you’ll gain about 350 hours of free time.” Though readers should note you must re-register every five years, this simple action can make a huge impact in stopping the torrent of junk mail being crammed into your mailbox each week. Free program helps boaters properly dispose of sewage, The Bay Foundation Boater Education Program has announced the annual return of the Honey Pot Day program for its seventh consecutive year. Honey Pot Day is offered from April 1 - August 31, in four Southern California harbors: Marina del Rey, King Harbor (Redondo Beach), Port of Los Angeles, and Port of Long Beach. The program launched in 2009 as a means to reduce levels of bacteria in local harbors by offering boat owners a convenient option to properly dispose of sewage. One toilet flush of untreated sewage from a boat can cause the same environmental impacts as 10,000 flushes of a homeowner’s toilet where the waste is processed by a municipal sewage treatment plant. (San Francisco Regional Water Quality Control Board, 2009) Since its inception, over 800 boaters have been educated about the adverse effects of discharging sewage directly into waterways, and over 24,000 gallons of sewage, from across the four harbors, were properly disposed. Through the installation of pumpout facilities and educational programs, like this one, recreational boaters become better informed, understand the importance of proper waste disposal, and directly benefit water quality. The Honey Pot Day Program complements the Absorbent Pad Exchanges program, which has four new locations in Los Angeles and San Diego Counties (there are 15 total public locations now), and the statewide Dockwalker Program, which trains volunteers to promote and educate boaters on environmentally-sound boating practices in California. “I am very proud of our staff who have worked so diligently over the past years to develop this program into a regional approach to help keep our harbors and coastal waters clean,” says The Bay Foundation Executive Director Tom Ford. “We all enjoy eating local seafood, and recreating in and around the water, so we thank the 800 boaters to-date who have used this program and have directly contributed to improving the water quality of our Bay and the region.” Honey Pot Day and the Dockwalker program are part of The Clean Vessel Education Program, which centers around four strategies: (1) developing pollution prevention services, (2) creating networking opportunities, (3) providing technical assistance, and (4) direct outreach. These programs bring to local boating communities the tools and resources needed to improve water quality in their favorite boating playgrounds. The Honey Pot Day Program and Dockwalker Program are funded by California State Parks, Division of Boating and Waterways, and Clean Vessel Act Program. The new Absorbent Pad Exchanges are funded by a grant from CalRecycle. To sign up for the program, boaters should visit http://www.honeypotday.org/. Here, they will take an online quiz, watch a video on how to operate a sewage pump out station, and read three brief publications by the California State Parks Division of Boating and Waterways. - SUBMITTED BY VICTORIA GAMBALE

RETIRE FROM PAGE 1
a major part of Berezowsky’s life. A New York native who went to Plainedge High School in North Massapequa, she met her husband while attending Sullivan County Community College. She then transferred to Richmond College on Staten Island, where she earned a degree in psychology with a minor in education. While studying at Richmond she worked as an assistant at Willowbrook Developmental Center, where a teacher “opened up my world in special education,” Berezowsky said. After moving from New York to Illinois and Illinois to California, she received her teaching credentials through Cal State Bakersfield and continued on for her master’s in special education. Berezowsky worked for four years in the Westside Union School District in the Palmdale area before arriving in Santa Monica, where she’s held classroom positions at Will Rogers as well as John Muir, McKinley and Franklin elementary schools and Pine Street Child
Development Center. When she interviewed for a position in SMMUSD, Berezowsky was offered the chance to create a new class for the district — “an opportunity that doesn’t happen very often in a teaching career,” she said. “I have worked with so many extremely talented instructional assistants, related service providers and administrators,” she said. “I am also very proud that many of my classroom assistants have gone on to become teachers and speech pathologists.” As she prepares to step away from her classroom, Berezowsky is looking forward to spending more time with her family. She and her husband of 41 years, Norm, have one son and three grandchildren in Texas and another recently married son who lives locally. She also plans to travel and make time for ballroom and country-Western dancing. But before she makes a beeline for retirement, Berezowsky will say bye to her students — or, as she calls them, “Mrs. B’s Bees.” It’ll be bittersweet, to be sure. jeff@smdp.com

Crime Watch is culled from reports provided by the Santa Monica Police Department. These are arrests only. All parties are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
ON MAY 13 AT APPROXIMATELY 4:45 P.M. Santa Monica police officers responded to L&K Market at 2127 Main St., after a passerby noticed the front gate and door of the business were open, and several items were strewn about outside. Officers determined the business had been burglarized, then followed a trail of dropped items that appeared to have come from the store. The trail led to the suspect, who was found sleeping under a staircase at a residence at the 200 block of Pacific St. The suspect also had several products from the store with him; which included beer, cigarettes, food, and lottery tickets. Officers later discovered the suspect used a metal sign to pry open the security gate to gain access into the store, and that he was in possession of drug paraphernalia as well. The suspects were arrested and then booked at the Santa Monica jail for burglary. Joseph Kalani Peltier, 57, of Santa Monica had bail set at $20,000.

Legislation to ban mirco-plastic particle abrasives, commonly referred to as “microbeads,” from being used in products such as facial scrubs, soaps, and toothpaste passed the California State Assembly last week on a 58-11 vote. The legislation, AB 888, authored by Assemblymember Richard Bloom (D-Santa Monica), would set up the strongest protections in the country against the use of these unnecessary and toxic additives. “Today’s vote on the Assembly floor is a testament to the hard work and relentless dedication by the numerous environmental and public health organizations and local governments who have joined together to fight pollution in our rivers, lakes and oceans,” said Bloom. “While we have much more work to do to get this legislation through the Senate and ultimately signed by Governor Brown, our coalition feels strongly we are well on our way to setting a national standard in eliminating these toxic additives from personal care products.” Stiv Wilson, Campaigns Manager for The Story of Stuff Project, one of the chief sponsors of the legislation, said the ban is a result of two years worth of work that shows Californians won’t stand for an industry perpetuated problem. “Today we are one step closer to eliminating a major source of plastic pollution at the source, before it has a chance to enter our waterways or our oceans,” added Blake Kopcho, Campaign Manager for 5 Gyres, also a sponsor of the legislation. Microbeads have emerged as a pervasive form of pollution in our waterways and marine environment, contributing approximately 38 tons of plastic annually. The tiny particles are prevalent in ocean debris piles, the Great Lakes, and were found in the Los Angeles River last year. Most mircobeads are not biodegradable and absorb various toxins such as DDT, PCBs (flame retardents), and other industrial chemicals and are ingested or absorbed by a variety of marine life and other mammals. Because fish ingest these particles and absorb the toxins in their flesh, many in the scientific community also worry about the impacts on the fish, crabs, and shellfish that humans eat. While tiny, the size of microbeads is actually the biggest problem. Plastic microbeads used as exfoliants go down the drain. They are generally not recoverable through ordinary wastewater treatment, and thereby get discharged into the environment. As a result, these plastic microbeads are found in all oceanic gyres, bays, gulfs and seas worldwide, as well as inland waterways. A single product can contain as much as 350,000 polyethylene or polypropylene microbeads. Fish species that humans harvest have been known to eat micro-plastic particles and the toxins absorbed in those plastics transfer to the fish tissue. Plastic microbeads pose direct threats to human health as well. Plastic microbeads used in toothpaste have been known to get stuck in a person’s gums which then collect bacteria and can lead to periodontal diseases. Humans eat fish and bivalves that have eaten microplastics which carry known dangerous toxins. “Scientists estimate that about 471 million plastic microbeads are released daily in San Francisco Bay alone and are contaminating the marine ecosystem. The problem could be eliminated if manufacturers used non-plastic alternatives, such as clay, wax, nut shells and other natural materials that are both available and effective,” added Andria Venture, Toxics Program Manager at Clean Water Action, who also sponsored the bill. “This is not a problem without a solution. Plastic microbeads are not essential to personal care products. Safe and natural alternatives are available such as walnut husks, pecan shells, apricot shells, and cocoa beans. Some brands already use environmentally safe alternatives. However, there are still a number of companies who are holding out. By passing this bill, we will take the first step in phasing out these damaging products completely in California and paving the way for other states and countries to follow our lead” Bloom added. Californians Against Waste, Clean Water Action, Breast Cancer Fund, California League of Conservation Voters, Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, Center for Biological Diversity, Defenders of Wildlife, Environment California, Heal the Bay, Los Angeles Water Keeper, Natural Resources Defense Council, Ocean Conservancy, and Sierra Club, are a sample of the many other groups in support of the bill. AB 888 must now pass the State Senate before going to Governor Jerry Brown for his consideration. - SUBMITTED BY SEAN MACNEIL

Sudoku Fill in the blank cells using numbers 1 to 9. Each number can appear only once in each row, column, and 3x3 block. Use logic and process of elimination to solve the puzzle. The difficulty level ranges from (easiest) to (hardest).
GETTING STARTED There are many strategies to solving Sudoku. One way to begin is to examine each 3x3 grid and figure out which numbers are missing. Then, based on the other numbers in the row and column of each blank cell, find which of the missing numbers will work. Eliminating numbers will eventually lead you to the answer. ■ “You’re not going to like this,” warned NPR’s Robert Krulwich, about to deliver a February (2011) story about visionary robotics developers James Auger and Jimmy Louizeau, who created a carnivorous clock, supposedly able to power itself for 12 days merely on the carcasses of 12 dead houseflies (which the clock traps with flypaper and then mechanically razors in two). The pair also showed a prototype of a coffee table that catches mice by luring them up the table legs with cheese into a hole in the center, where they are guillotined. A lot of people don’t even know what composting is, let alone practice it on a regular basis. The process involves combining food waste with yard residue, like leaves, to produce a nutrient-rich soil-like substance. This Friday, embrace it in all its glory. It’s National Composting Day! “It would be beneďŹ cial if people composted more often,â€? said Amirata Mahallati, as he relaxed in The Coffee Bean in Playa del Rey. “But I think it’ll be difďŹ cult to make it a habitual practice in this city. “Still, I’m hopeful that people will start to raise more awareness so people know the beneďŹ ts of composting.â€?
Since yard and food waste make up 30 percent of the waste stream, composting would signiďŹ cantly decrease the amount of waste reaching landďŹ lls, waterways and water treatment facilities. Even if you can’t envision a world in which composting is part of everyone’s routine, you can begin taking action. Be the change.
