Parking made easy for travelers BY ERIK HUBERMAN Special to the Daily Press
DOWNTOWN Thomas Lombardi is the President and CEO of AirportParkingReservations.com and ParkSleepFly.com, the world’s largest Internet aggregators of airport parking and hotel packages. Q: Give us your background and a bit about how you became an entrepreneur? A: I have a non-entrepreneurial background in banking and private equity. We wore pleated pants and worked in spreadsheets all day. An Internet travel company asked me to run an acquisition process for them back in 2010, and now I am their CEO. The transition from the institutionalized banking system into the entrepreneurial tech world was a blessing. Q: What does your company do? What distinguishes you from competitors or similar businesses? A: We help millions of travelers find airport parking and airport hotels packages. Our future venture will also include airport taxis, limos, rideshare and public transportation to provide a one-stopshop for airport transportation. I have 22 amazing teammates to blaze our path into the LOMBARDI future.

MAKING PROGRESS: Designer Danny Welch surveys the progress of a new war memorial at Woodlawn Cemetery on Thursday. The memorial will be unveiled today during the cemetery's annual Memorial Day Observance.
BY DAVID MARK SIMPSON Daily Press Staff Writer
WOODLAWN CEMETERY Santa Monica opens its newest war memorial at the Woodlawn Cemetery today. At 11 a.m., city officials and families
of fallen soldiers will unveil the Commemorative Wall, six simple pillars, each representing a foreign conflict, inscribed with the names of Santa Monicans who died in action. Councilmember Bob Holbrook, who came up with the idea last year, will speak for a few minutes and then
people will read off all of the inscribed names. The vast majority of the names, he said, are of fallen soldiers who are not buried in Santa Monica. The memorial will give family members a place to go. SEE MEMORIAL PAGE 7

Bloom’s bill would ban plastic microbeads in cosmetics FENIT NIRAPPIL Associated Press
SACRAMENTO, Calif. The state Assembly has passed a bill banning the use of plastic
microbeads in soaps and cosmetics. Manufacturers already are phasing out the ingredients, which are considered harmful to the environment in part because they are not biodegradable. AB1699 passed Friday on a 45-10 vote.
Former mayor and Democratic Assemblyman Richard Bloom of Santa Monica says his bill responds to the tiny exfoliating beads making their way past filters and treatment plants. They end up in waterways, where they are swallowed by fish.

The bill heads to the Senate, where Bloom says he will push for amendments to win manufacturer support. He already pushed back the timeline of the phase-out to 2019. Similar bills are moving through the legislatures in Illinois and New York.

Paying tribute Editor:
For many, Memorial Day means picnics, barbecues and outdoor activities. While traditional observance of Memorial Day has faded over the years, it is important to continue to celebrate the true meaning by remembering all those who sacrificed their lives while serving our nation. This Memorial Day, give thanks to the men and women who fought for our country by visiting a local parade or memorial service, donning patriotic gear and flying your American flag at half-staff. More importantly, take a moment from your day to stop and remember all those that so humbly gave their lives for the betterment of our nation. To learn how you can pay tribute not only on Memorial Day, but throughout each year, contact your local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.

Beware of dog Editor:
On Sunday, May 18, my dog was attacked by a savage German shepherd dog. It happened at Palisades Park at Ocean and Idaho. I was sitting on a bench with my dog in my lap. Suddenly this dog — on a leash — grabs my mini poodle and bites his ear and breaks his leg and generally terrorizes him and me and the people nearby. I grab my dog and the creepy man pulls his killer dog off and walks away. Just like that! I was too stressed to think straight. I called the cops and they cruised the area and will keep an eye out. And that's why I'm writing this — to warn all dog owners of this menace at the park. I/we can't relax there anymore — even if your dog is in your lap! P.S. Don't confuse this savage beast with the nice shepherd that walks along Seventh Street to Reed Park just about every day. He's well trained.

Fan of development Editor:
Thank you for publishing the intelligent, reasoned analysis by Andrew Adams of the City Council decision to dump the Hines project. I oppose the NIMBY attitude that pushed the council to defeat the development. Like Adams, I am just an average resident of Santa Monica (22 years), but I saw no reason to oppose the mixed-use development plans near the new transit system. The new Metro line will be great, and inevitably there will be businesses and housing near it. That's the way all big cities are. Santa Monica can't forever try to remain non-urban. I save my Not-In-My-Back-Yard ferocity for things that are actually harmful — like the airport. Small planes and jets overhead and crashing in our yards are my concern. When I lived closer to the airport at 2334 Ashland Ave., a small plane did tumble through the yard, killing the pilot and endangering my children. The Hines project looked fine to me, though I'm a member of the Friends of Sunset Park which put up a battle against it.

Living without a crapper MY FRIEND PRO SE, WHO IS WHEEL-
chair-bound, lives in a city-affiliated Community Corporation of Santa Monica (CCSM) low-income apartment on Fifth Street near Wilshire Boulevard. When he moved into his third floor unit in May, 1998, he couldn’t get his bulky, electricpowered wheelchair into the bathroom or bedrooms. Pro Se begged CCSM to rectify the four confirmed state building and safety code violations that limited full use of his unit. When his landlord failed to respond, he went public. Some of us then on the board of the Wilshire-Montana neighborhood group made inquiries. It took CCSM management nine months to make the necessary repairs so Pro Se could use his bathroom and bedrooms. There were problems with the elevator that broke down hundreds of times either marooning Pro Se on the third floor or stranding him on ground level, with no way to get up or down. Another problem was a malfunctioning front gate that occasionally prevented entry to the property. This resulted in multiple nights isolated outside his apartment or scrambling to find a manager with the authority to OK a hotel room (which still hasn’t been addressed) until it was repaired — which often took days. With new CCSM management, things have improved. So wasn’t Pro Se surprised when the building manager told him that he was getting a new low-flush toilet? Pro asked that his “john” be handicappedcompliant with a raised seat to let him transfer from wheelchair to commode easier. The toilet was installed and leaked the first night. A second toilet was installed the next day complete with a three-inchhigh toilet seat. For the first time in 16 years, Pro Se has a proper toilet. Now, if he can only get the bathroom’s broken ventilation fan fixed. Community Corp. has often fallen short in taking care of the needs of its disabled clients. Although things have improved lately, there’s more that needs to be done. Stay tuned. FUN AND GAMES ON THE POLITICAL FRONT
On May 15, Santa Monica Democratic Club Co-Chair Jay Johnson took me to task for my column (“In ‘Lieu’ of Waxman,” April 22, Page 4) panning Congressional candidate and State Senator Ted Lieu. In a letter to this paper (“Not in line with Bauer,” May 15, Pg. 4), he stated my criticism of Lieu “smacks of distorted one-sided propaganda.” “Picking one unpopular position of any candidate is unfair, without showing the ‘other side’ of their positive actions and positions,” he wrote. Then, Johnson embarked on his own one-sided propaganda rant praising Lieu. As an opinion writer, I’m under no obligation to provide “equal time” or give both sides of an issue — that’s the job of a reporter. And, I mentioned four “unpopular positions” of concern, not just one. I look at a number of factors when endorsing candidates. Does the candidate agree with my point of view? How about
smarts? Honesty? Do they grandstand or “shoot from the hip?” Johnson hinted that I may have a hidden agenda and opposed Lieu because he wants to shut down Santa Monica Airport (SMO). Nope. The issue was that Lieu’s “Senate Select Committee on Air Quality” was reviewing “air pollution around the state of California” and looking at its impacts “on various communities in the state.” His taxpayer-supported “statewide study” covered one airport: SMO and none of the four general aviation airports in his own Senate District let alone elsewhere in California. Lieu was grandstanding for his West L.A. constituents. I also criticized Lieu for voting against legislation that would have outlawed mutilating sharks and throwing them back in the ocean. I ridiculed him for threatening a State Senate investigation and boycott of Lowe’s Home Improvement chain just because he didn’t like their advertising policy. Worse yet, when interviewed about it on Fox 11 News, Lieu was totally unaware that the target for his personal umbrage was one of 60 national advertisers that had a similar ad policy on controversial TV shows. I was recently reminded by a reader that Lieu broke a promise he made to oppose SB173 to some 3,400 students at Santa Monica College’s Emeritus College in May, 2013. The bill would have banned all state funding for older adult programs like Emeritus College. However, when it came before the Senate, he voted for it. When asked why, he apologized and blamed his staff for “not flagging it for him.” In the county supervisor’s race, Santa Monica Dems passed over a great leader and iconic Democrat, Bobby Shriver — instead they endorsed Sheila Kuehl who repeatedly lied to voters about a Santa Monica ballot measure in 2008. Endorsements like this are why I’d never join Johnson’s club. THERE’S MORE
Our Assemblyman Richard Bloom, and former mayor, sent a letter to City Council a couple weeks ago expressing his disappointment with their decision to rescind the controversial development agreement for the proposed 770,000-square-foot Hines Bergamot Transit Village. Bloom who is chair of the Assembly Subcommittee on Resources and Transportation wrote, “In fact, the Hines project embodied the most aggressive traffic reduction strategies the city — indeed, most cities — have ever seen and that would have been a model for other projects.” Come again? Is he describing the 7,000-plus, new, daily car trips Bergamot would have generated or the two new traffic lights on Olympic Boulevard with left-turn signals? Traffic reduction? Better stick with the orcas, Richard. Comments like Bloom’s earn state legislators their single-digit approval rating and why I now regret endorsing him three weeks ago. opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal has indeed made waves in the organic farming community. Miller, former director of the Office of Biotechnology at the U.S. Food & Drug Administration, argues that conventional farming-which uses synthetic pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers and often genetically modified (GM) seed stock to maximize yields-is actually better for the environment, producing more food and using less water compared to organic farming. “Organic farming might work well for certain local environments on a small scale, but its farms produce far less food per unit of land and water than conventional ones,” says Miller. “The low yields of organic agriculture-typically 20 percent to 50 percent less than conventional agriculture-impose various stresses on farmland and especially on water consumption.” Miller adds that organic methods can cause significant leaking of nitrates from composted manure-the fertilizer of choice for most organic farmsinto groundwater, polluting drinking water. He also cites research showing that largescale composting generates significant amounts of greenhouse gases and “may also deposit pathogenic bacteria on or in food crops, which has led to more frequent occurrences of food poisoning in the U.S. and elsewhere.” “If the scale of organic production were significantly increased, says Miller, the lower yields would increase the pressure for the conversion of more land to farming and more water for irrigation, both of which are serious environmental issues.” He adds that conventional farming’s embrace of GM crops-a no-no to organic farmers-is yet another way we can boost yields and feed more people with less land.
But, the Washington, DC-based Organic Center takes issue with Miller’s allegations about nitrates polluting groundwater: “Most studies that examine nutrient runoff show that organic production methods result in reduced nitrogen losses when compared to conventional crop production,” reports the group. The Organic Center also disputes Miller’s claims about the organic farming’s carbon footprint, arging that overall energy usage and greenhouse gas emissions are much less from organic farming than for conventional agriculture. The group also says that taking into account the greenhouse gas emissions that come from the production (not just the use) of synthetic fertilizer changes the equation entirely. The group cites a recent study by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization which found that organic agriculture can potentially reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions by 20 percent compared to conventional farming. Also, Miller’s statements about GM crops overlook the ecological problems associated with their use. “For example,” the Organic Center reports, “transgene movement from GM crops to wild, weedy relatives could increase the invasiveness of weeds.” Also, genetic modification has led to higher pesticide use in agricultural systems and an increase in herbicide-resistant weeds. Some worry this is leading to a vicious cycle whereby farmers use more and more chemical herbicides to battle hardier and hardier weeds. As the price of organic food continues to drop, more and more people will be able to afford it and the increased demand may well drive the conversion to organic agriculture more than policy or philosophy.

TO ALL PERSONS INTERESTED IN THE MATTER OF THE PROCEEDINGS FOR THE WESTERN RIVERSIDE COUNCIL OF GOVERNMENTS CALIFORNIA HERO PROGRAM: Western Riverside Council of Governments is seeking to amend the validation judgments obtained in Riverside County Superior Court, Case Nos. RIC1308636 and RIC 1308637, which pursuant to AB 860 authorized the financing of distributed generation renewable energy sources, or energy efficiency improvements, water efficiency improvements, and electric vehicle infrastructure permanently fixed to residential, commercial, industrial, or other eligible real property in California. Q: What is one free piece of advice/tip/insight you can give an aspiring or new entrepreneur? A: Instead of creating a business plan, just go create the business. Buy a domain name for 10 bucks, build a free Wordpress website in a day, create a ton of interesting content, and that will be your live business plan for prospective customers and investors. Q: How is your company changing the world? A: Consumers are entitled to transparency of what products or services they are purchasing. Parking is one of those opaque industries where you don’t always know what you are paying for until you pay for it. We are shining a bright light on the industry so that consumers get all the information they need. We’ve heard from our parking partners that this is pushing them to be better operators.

Q: Why did you choose to locate in Santa Monica? A: I chose our office location in Santa Monica because of the local talent from tech companies/universities and it’s the city I call home. My wife and I lived here during grad school and we’re excited to call Santa Monica home for years to come. Q: What do you think of the Santa Monica scene these days, e.g. “Silicon Beach?” A: The Silicon Beach moniker is good for cultivating talent and entrepreneurship. We have a long way to go to catch up to Silicon Valley, but the weather here is way better. Q: One thing you’d like to share with the locals of Santa Monica? A: The Big Blue Bus is a great resource for getting around town. The fewer cars we have on the street, the better. Grab a buck and hitch a ride. We all know how hard it is to find parking. editor@smdp.com

MEMORIAL FROM PAGE 1 “When I looked at the list of names there was one that I recognized,” Holbrook said. “It was someone who I’d known for a long time but I didn’t know that his brother had died in Vietnam.” When he spoke to his friend, a Santa Monica resident, Holbrook learned that the brother is buried in Riverside. “It’s hard for him to make the trip out there as often as he’d like to,” he said. “Now he’ll be able to see his brother’s name honored in Santa Monica.” The Santa Monica community raised $13,250 to fund the project, but taxpayers picked up an additional $23,050. Room has been left on each plaque to include names that were missed. There are more than 125 names on the current list, which has grown steadily over the past year. City officials were confident that they’d tracked down most of them until President Barack Obama announced that Joe Gandara would receive the Medal of Honor 70 years after his death in Amferville, France. Gandara, a Santa Monica, was passed over for the medal likely because of his Mexican heritage. When Woodlawn Cemetery Administrator Cindy Tomlinson realized that they didn’t have Gandara on their list,
she knew they were doing something wrong. Cemetery staff had reviewed the names of soldiers who were buried during wartimes, but Gandara’s body was repatriated years later. Repatriation, in this case, refers to fallen soldiers who were removed from their original burial sites and returned home. The staff went back and reviewed the names of all the soldiers, not just the ones that died during wartime, and found about dozen more repatriations. Holbrook said that there’d been some discussion that the memorial should denote Gandara’s Medal of Honor status. “We’d have to go through every single person and inscribe which citations they might have earned,” he said. “The names are going up there without rank or citations that they’ve earned because they all shared that thing in common that they all perished in service for our country, and whether they’re a private or a captain or a general or a sergeant, we didn’t think that was important that we put their rank.” Today’s ceremony is the 76th annual Memorial Day celebration at Woodlawn and will include a military flyover by the Condor Squadron. They will fly in the “Missing Man” formation, according to cemetery officials. This formation is an aerial salute to a fallen pilot. dave@smdp.com

BURIAL FROM PAGE 3 reported. The morgue and Veterans Administration appear to blame each other for the delay, the station added. “I think it’s incomprehensible,” said Richard Burns, a Marine Corps veteran who goes to the Riverside National Cemetery and volunteers to lead memorial services for the unclaimed and often indigent vets. Often, Burns and a handful of volunteers are the only people in attendance. “It’s kinda sad that these people don’t get the proper care that they deserve,” Burns said. “Even after death.” Morgue officials said that the veterans’ bodies were unclaimed and they didn’t know how long they were there, blaming the

Veterans Administration for the delay. The bodies of as many as 60 veterans may have been at the morgue for the past year and a half, the TV station reported. “There are about 60 decedents of probable veteran status that have awaited disposition for about a year as a result of a personnel change in the Veterans Affairs office and stringent identification/eligibility processes required by the VA,” the morgue said. Meanwhile, Cindy Van Bibber, a VA spokeswoman, said the agency was never notified by the morgue that the bodies were processed and ready to be buried. A proper burial should take about three days, she said. Van Bibber said that “at no point” did the morgue contact the VA and tell the agency about the bodies piling up there. “We definitely weren’t contacted or we would have had a service for the veteran,” she said.

This year you'll want more time for yourself. You tend to have one or more confidants whom you share and brainstorm with. As a result, by the time you are ready to act, your ideas will have been well-thought-out. If you are single, be careful, as you could run into someone who is emotionally unavailable. You won't have that knowledge until you date this person, so guard against making commitments too quickly. If you are attached, the two of you will want to schedule several weekends away together. Your relationship blossoms without all the daily interference. TAURUS makes a great healer for you.

GETTING STARTED There are many strategies to solving Sudoku. One way to begin is to examine each 3x3 grid and figure out which numbers are missing. Then, based on the other numbers in the row and column of each blank cell, find which of the missing numbers will work. Eliminating numbers will eventually lead you to the answer.

■ A week before the National Football League held its 2014 Draft Day in May, a large contingent of junior and senior boys staged their own draft day at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, Calif., "dividing up" the available girls to ask to the upcoming prom. As in the NFL, the drafters "scout" the draftees, and a "rule book" notes the draft's boundaries (e.g., this year, sophomore girls are eligible). The girls, of course, can decline the invitation, but the draft, as in the NFL, is designed to discourage a selected girl from being "poached" by "competing" boys. Obviously, many in the community expressed horror at the draft, with the principal denouncing it and urging parents to rein in their sons, but one of the drafted girls wrote that the whole thing was just "fun" and "is not, was never, and will never ever be used to objectify the girls." ■ The downfall of Russia-sympathizing Ukrainian president Viktor Yanukovych in February (which eventually provoked Vladimir Putin's retaliation against Ukraine) accelerated when his countrymen learned of his startlingly opulent lifestyle (e.g., gold toilets, a private zoo) -- including catching a video glimpse of a nude portrait Yanukovych had commissioned of himself by artist Olga Oleynik. Yanukovych, a not-particularly-buff 63-year-old man, was portrayed reclining and with an undersized male endowment. (Oleynik told Agence France-Presse news service that she had done a similar portrait of Putin -- more generously endowed -- but was "afraid" to show it in public or to disclose whether it was actually commissioned by Putin.)
