Local softball players heading to Italy SANTA MONICA REBELS, AREA COACH CHRIS DRUCKMAN TO REPRESENT U.S. OVERSEAS
BY JEFFREY I. GOODMAN Daily Press Staff Writer
They’ll go, they’ll see and maybe they’ll even conquer. Members of a local club softball team are heading to Italy next week for 10 days of international competition, sightseeing and camaraderie. Seven players from the Santa Monica Rebels will become athletic ambassadors on the trip, which will pit them against Italian teams in three sets of double-headers in Padua, Rome and Florence. “They’ll get to represent America,” said Rebels coach Chris Druckman, who was chosen as a coach for the Italy-bound squad. “It’s an amazing opportunity for these girls.” The trip is organized by America’s Team, a company that offers sports-centric travel opportunities to young athletes from across the country. The journey was arranged after the company reached out to Druckman, whose local players will join athletes from Kentucky to create a full roster. The Santa Monica contingent includes recent Pacifica Christian graduate Emma Miller, who will attend University of Puget Sound in Washington state, and three other area products: former Palisades High stu-

Studies junior Dani Pechthalt. Their overseas trip is part of a busy summer of softball. Recently, the girls and their Rebels teammates earned a silver medal in what Druckman called a “nail-biting” district championship game in Rancho Cucamonga. The second-place finish qualified the Rebels
for a state tournament July 10-12 in Lancaster. The day after the state competition ends, seven players will fly to Italy. And when they return from abroad, they’ll rejoin their Rebels teammates to compete in national championships in Spokane, Washington. The Rebels have represented Santa Monica at the district, state and national levels every year since 2012, when they splintered from another Santa Monica-based softball club to play in more competitive games and leagues. Last year, they took second in districts and third in state to qualify for the national championships in Wyoming. Druckman, a longtime softball coach in the area who has helmed Brentwood School’s varsity program, was hoping to take more Rebels players on the Italian excursion. “It came down to finances for a lot of the girls,” said Druckman, who is still raising money through crowdfunding website Piggybackr. “That was my first goal — to give the same opportunity to everybody. A few had to drop out because they couldn’t afford it, and we couldn’t raise enough money.” The girls who make the trip will do much more than play softball. They’ll also meet foreign players, sample local food and visit cultural and historical sites like Trevi Fountain, the Colosseum and Vatican City. JEFF@smdp.com
Local nonprofit finds a matching outfit THREADS SECURES PARTNERSHIP TO EXPAND CLOTHING DONATION EFFORTS
BY JEFFREY I. GOODMAN Daily Press Staff Writer
Contrary to what her garage might suggest, Suzanne Goldman isn’t a hoarder. The boxes and boxes of clothing she’s collected represent the work of the nonprofit she and fellow school parent Jake Wachtel started a couple years ago. But Santa Monica-based Threads has outgrown its temporary storage space.
Indeed, the success of the cofounders’ efforts to clothe needy students in Santa Monica and Malibu has led to a major turning point: They no longer have room to house the clothing they’ve rounded up over many months, and they’re now entering a partnership with a larger nonprofit organization to expand their reach and impact. The group’s clothing will be placed at area thrift shops run by the Los Angeles chapter of the National Council of Jewish Women, where local low-income students and their families can use vouchers to acquire clothes for free. It was part of Threads’ vision all along, Goldman said, to allow children

to select their own clothes instead of being handed items that don’t fit well or that don’t mesh with their style preferences. “They’re going to be able to shop and pick out any type of clothing — not just things we’ve collected,” Goldman said. “People can go in and shop for what they want. Families with vouchers can go to an actual store, go through the racks and get what they need.” NOTICING A NEED

Living-wage wars to begin anew? A FEW WEEKS AGO, CITY COUNCIL UNANI-
mously authorized staff to pursue the drafting of a citywide minimum-wage ordinance with hopes of approving a living-wage measure by August. City Hall has already established $15.37 per hour minimum wage for city employees and contractors, as well as a condition for development agreements. The Los Angeles City Council recently approved a citywide minimum wage ordinance that would increase the city’s living wage in increments to $15 per hour by 2020. Recently, Los Angeles County 3rd District Supervisor Sheila Kuehl asked her fellow supervisors to support drafting an ordinance raising the county’s minimum wage incrementally over the next five years from $9/hour to $15/hour in unincorporated areas. She’s asked for a proposed ordinance within 45 days. Despite the sudden rush to raise minimum wages, Santa Monica has been waging the “Living Wage War” since the 1990s. A coalition led by Santa Monica Allied for Responsible Tourism (SMART) consisting of labor leaders, activist clergy and power players from the Santa Monica for Renters’ Rights (SMRR) political organization were crusading for all-encompassing minimum wage legislation starting with low-wage hotel workers. Well-heeled hospitality and other downtown business interests fought back. They formed Santa Monicans for a Living Wage and concocted ballot Measure KK for the November 2000 election to fight a proposed ordinance implementing minimum wage standards in the city. Measure KK asked voters to approve or rescind council’s approval of amending the city charter to require minimum wage and employee benefit requirements for some employees working on city contracts. Most importantly, KK barred City Council from establishing, modifying, or regulating any wage and benefit requirements. After a nasty fight, KK was defeated nearly four to one at the polls. In May 2001, City Council approved an ordi-

third-grader at Grant Elementary, noticed that another student was wearing the same clothes to school every day. Knowing that the school had a sizable collection of lost-and-found items that would likely be donated to and resold by charity organizations, Wachtel believed the clothes could serve a purpose without leaving the district. Plans took root when Wachtel shared the idea with Goldman while the two worked on legislative issues as PTA Council representatives. With the help of school officials and community liaisons who identified students in need while protecting their privacy, Wachtel and Goldman collected clothing, washed it at no cost thanks to the ongoing assistance of Fox Cleaners on Montana Avenue and and anonymously donated it throughout the district. One recipient was a student from a single-parent home who went two weeks without wearing underwear or socks. Another was a student who didn’t have the winter wear to attend a field trip to the snow. And there are parents in the district who have to choose between putting food on the table, paying the electric bill or buying clothes for their child.
nance (effective July 1, 2002) that established a new local minimum wage requirement up from $6.75/hour to $10.50/hour with health care benefits, or $12.25/hour without, applicable to city employees and its service contractors, and expanded the wage requirement to all private businesses in the coastal zone and downtown areas with annual gross receipts of over $5 million. Restaurant, hotel and downtown businesses once again raised piles of money and floated ballot Measure JJ that required voter ratification of council’s action. The measure was narrowly defeated in the November 2002 election, killing any living-wage mandate. 51.69 percent of the voters opposed it amid charges of deceptive and misleading campaign mailers by proponents. Sound familiar? Had it been approved, Santa Monica would have been the first city to establish a minimum wage (affecting 2,000 low-wage workers) for employees of private businesses. Since then, City Hall policy makers have resorted to other methods of promoting livingwage requirements. In March 2012, council approved plans by developer Alexander Gorby to renovate the historic Santa Monica Professional Building at 710 Wilshire and convert it into a hotel only after Gorby agreed to a $12.85/hour minimum wage for hotel workers. In 2013, Council approved development agreements for two six-story hotels at Fifth Street and Colorado Avenue after that developer agreed to a living-wage rate of $15.37/hour as demanded by hospitality workers’ union Unite Here, Local 11. It’s no secret that unionized hotel workers have returned the favors by successfully campaigning for union-friendly SMRR candidates. Tragically, we’re in a county where 2.7 million residents live in poverty. Many county residents, despite working full-time, earn too little to cover the bare necessities such as adequate housing, food and basic health care. There are “pros” and “cons” for raising the minimum wage. Yes, it raises the pay of the lowest-income
workers and their families, but upping the minimum wage every few years by a buck or two doesn’t erase poverty or provide the tools for low-wage workers to acquire skills needed to escape poverty’s grip and begin climbing the economic ladder. Sadly, even a $15/hour minimum wage won’t enable low-wage workers to live in Santa Monica or afford to shop here. Worse yet, those on limited, fixed incomes such as Social Security, pensions and welfare get hurt by the inflation that usually results as wages increase. The burden of poverty hits the disabled and retired seniors — who find themselves even lower on the economic ladder — especially hard. For the millions of employers whose businesses run on tight margins, increasing labor costs usually means charging more for goods and services or layoffs, cutbacks and business closures. About 15 years ago, I was told by a local restaurateur that if he had to raise a dishwasher’s or busboy’s pay from $6 to $10 per hour, he’d only hire experienced, documented, English-speaking workers. He noted that as his lowest-paid employees’ pay increased, everyone else’s pay would also have to increase. He told me he couldn’t pay a dishwasher or busboy $10/hour and still pay his trained cashier $8/hour or his prep chef $9/hour. Each employee will have to get commensurate raises, which could lead to shorter hours, reduction of benefits, cutting staff or closing the doors if his customers refused to pay the higher prices that would inevitably come because of the higher costs. Such complicated issues defy Band-Aid solutions. There’s nothing wrong with boosting minimum-wage requirements, but it must be done in association with providing tax incentives for job creators and training/educating workers, too. That way, entry-level workers are better equipped to escape poverty’s grip and avoid a future of minimum-wage jobs.
“We’ve delivered clothing at almost every single school in the district,” Wachtel said. “This is not just for one school or one area. There are people at all the schools who are really benefiting from what we’ve been doing ... And now we’re going to have a place to bring clothing and an ability to give families in need a way to access it.” Threads has operated largely through word of mouth, but it has grown in popularity among members of the Santa Monica-Malibu school district community. “It’s a country-wide issues and a regional issue and a local issue,” Wachtel said. “We’re doing the best we can to help families in our community and, with the partnership, the extended community.”
lect will help to replenish the Council thrift shops’ inventories. But for Goldman and Wachtel, the new model alleviates their storage burdens while still allowing them to connect with local families. The partnership also empowers the students to select their own clothing. “When you’re in middle school, you have your own style,” Goldman said. “You want to choose what you want to wear. Plus, the size small at Gap might fit differently than the small at Old Navy. When people were requesting sizes, we knew we might miss the mark on what actually fits. And since we’ve been giving the clothes away, nobody wanted to come back and say, ‘This doesn’t fit.’” Now, instead of distributing clothing, Goldman and Wachtel will work with school officials and liaisons to get vouchers in the hands of needy families. “Everyone thinks Franklin is this high-society school, but we’ve helped people at Franklin,” said Goldman, a parent at the Montana Avenue elementary school. “It’s such a misconception. There’s need in every school.” For more information about Threads, visit threads4kids.org or email info@threads4kids.org. For more information about NCJW, which operates eight thrift shops in the Los Angeles area, visit ncjwla.org.
MAKING A DIFFERENCE
Threads’ work with the National Council of Jewish Women began well before the new partnership. When Goldman and Wachtel initially set up a clothing drive in the district to set their idea in motion, NCJW volunteers spent hours helping them sort donated items. In return, when the Council offers clothes and supplies to children in need during its one-day Back 2 School Store event on July 19, Goldman and Wachtel will assist as volunteers. Threads will continue to spearhead clothing drives throughout the year, and the items they col-

S T A F F
Crime Watch is culled from reports provided by the Santa Monica Police Department. These are arrests only. All parties are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
ON JUNE 26, AT ABOUT 2:51 A.M. A resident in the 1100 block of Pico Boulevard called to report that a bicycle had just been stolen from a neighbor’s porch. The reporting party described the thief as a male, Black wearing a black hoodie and carrying a flashlight. He was last seen riding the purloined pink beach cruiser westbound on Pico Boulevard and out of sight. While the initial responding officers made contact with the witness and victim, other patrol officers located and detained the suspect at the corner of Lincoln and Pico. Officers transported the witness and victim to the location; the witness positively identifying the suspect, and the victim identifying her bicycle. The suspect, later identified as Ramziddin Rasheed, was searched subsequent to his arrest for petty theft and found to be in possession of narcotics and paraphernalia. He was subsequently booked for the theft and drugs at the Santa Monica Jail. Rasheed, 36, transient, had bail set at $1,000.

HAS ONE OF THE MANY POPULAR shows on HGTV inspired you to renovate your own home? If so, you’re not alone! Home renovations have been on the rise the last few years in the U.S. and Canada, which can mean lots of leftover paint. Extra paint can last for years when properly sealed and stored away from extreme heat and cold, and if unneeded, can be donated to organizations like Habitat for Humanity and Keep America Beautiful. But if paint can no longer be used, what are some safe, environmentally responsible ways to dispose of it? The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that about 10 percent of the house paint purchased in the United States each year — about 65 to 69 million gallons — is discarded. Leftover and unusable paint wastes causes pollution when disposed of improperly, the EPA warns. Before you can decide how to dispose of old paint, you’ll need to determine what kind of paint it is. There are two types of paint: oil-based and latex; and regulations on disposal of each type of paint vary by location. In some areas, latex paint can be thrown out with the trash as long as it is completely dried. Keep in mind that some household waste haulers may not pick up latex paint even if it is completely dried, so always check with your local waste disposal service provider on rules and regulations applicable to your area. Oil-based paints, as well as paint thinners and other paint solvents, are considered hazardous household waste (HHW) and are typically disposed of at HHW facilities. While many communities across the country will hold annual or semi-annual HHW collection days to make paint disposal easy for local residents, the new non-profit PaintCare is allowing residents of California, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Oregon, Minnesota and Vermont to have convenient disposal of house paint, primers, stains, sealers and clear coatings year-round. There is no charge for dropping off paint at a PaintCare drop-off site, and Paintcare’s
site locator (available on their website and app) allows residents of applicable states to quickly find their closest drop-off location. PaintCare locations can be found at select Sherwin-Williams, True Value, Ace Hardware and other retailers. “Retailer support of the PaintCare program is not only good business practice, but also an extension of good customer service,” says Scott Cassel, Chief Executive Officer of the Product Stewardship Institute, Inc., a nonprofit that in partnership with the paint industry, led the national dialogue that laid the foundation for the PaintCare program. “By providing paint drop-off locations, retailers not only encourage more foot traffic, but they also offer an important kind of community service that addresses both environmental protection and convenience.” PaintCare manages the leftover paint it receives according to a policy of “highest, best use.” Their goal is to recycle as much as possible. Most of the oil-based paint is taken to a cement plant where it is blended into a fuel and burned to recover the energy value. Latex paint that is not rusty, molding or spoiled is sent to recycling companies and reprocessed into new paint. Some paint that the non-profit receives is nearly new and in excellent condition, and is given away at swap shops or to charitable organizations. Paintcare plans to expand its locations into Colorado in July of 2015, Maine in August of 2015 and the District of Columbia in January of 2016. going in the wrong direction. And I think he has been one of the more important commissioners in this city over a long period of time. Not everyone has agreed with some of his positions, and that’s the way that it will always be in Santa Monica when it comes to planning, but he is consistent, he is forthright, and he is someone that we all rely on.” Commissioner Gerda Newbold said she was shocked that he was not reappointed, though she “sort of knew it was coming.” “He’s actually the only person who actually works in land use, which I think is kind of problematic for our commission,” she said. “His knowledge and his experience have been really important to us especially after we lost some architects.” Commissioner Jennifer Kennedy agreed. “There have been times when we’ve had some really difficult decisions to make, things that were close, could have gone either way, or things that just needed further in depth analyses, and Commissioner Ries never hesitated to take out his calculator and do the math,” she said, “and really help us through some difficult situations and he has been a leader on this commission.” McKinnon noted Ries’ service on both a Land Use and Circulation Element (LUCE) and a Zoning Ordinance update is rare for a commissioner.
The California Incline will be closed until summer 2016 while construction crews demolish the existing structure and build the new bridge and roadway. Motorists are advised to use Ocean Avenue (via Moomat Ahiko Way) and Lincoln Boulevard as alternate routes. For more information on this project, contact 888-303-6026 or incline@smgov.net.

“The LUCE update was one of the highlights my career,” he said, “just when we got through with all of that, and all the awards we got, and what a great document that was. Maybe the zoning code was or wasn’t implemented in a perfect fashion but we went through that and that was a very difficult process.” In an era where development has been the center of city debate, Ries urged cooperation. “Change is a scary thing for a community but we as a society and a community have to change the way we do our land use,” he said. “We’re not all going to agree on things and my only advice for future commissioners is: Try to work across the aisle and engage other people. There’s always common ground and that’s really what government’s about is finding common ground and figuring out what change we can implement and there are things both sides won’t agree to but over time we can work on those things.” Ries, who took to the dais for the last time less than 24 hours after council opted to appoint Fresco to his seat, said he wouldn’t be leaving Santa Monica civic life. “I think that community service is incredibly important and the city, whether you like it or not, you haven’t seen the last of me,” he said. “I don’t know what I will do next, but I assure you I will stay involved in this community.” DAVE@smdp.com

Sudoku Fill in the blank cells using numbers 1 to 9. Each number can appear only once in each row, column, and 3x3 block. Use logic and process of elimination to solve the puzzle. The difficulty level ranges from (easiest) to (hardest).
GETTING STARTED There are many strategies to solving Sudoku. One way to begin is to examine each 3x3 grid and figure out which numbers are missing. Then, based on the other numbers in the row and column of each blank cell, find which of the missing numbers will work. Eliminating numbers will eventually lead you to the answer. ■ California inventor Matt McMullen, who makes the world’s most realistic life-sized female doll, the RealDoll (with exquisite skin texture and facial and body architecture, and which sells for $5,000 to $10,000, depending on customization), is working with engineers experienced in robotics to add animation -- but according to a June New York Times report, faces a built-in problem. As a pioneer Japanese robotics developer observed, robots that become too humanlike tend to disgust rather than satisfy. Hence, the more lifelike McMullen makes his RealDolls, the more likely the customer is to be creeped out rather than turned on -- perhaps forcing the virtuoso

McMullen to leave enough imperfection to reassure the customer that it’s just a doll. ■ A low-caste minor girl was beaten up by several higher-caste women in the village of Ganeshpura, India, in June (in retaliation for the girl’s having disrespected a male relative of the women -- by allowing her shadow to partially cover the man). The girl’s family managed to get to a police station to file charges, but in some remote villages like Ganeshpura, higher-caste aggressors can intimidate the victims into silence (and in this case, allegedly threatened to kill the girl and members of her family for the shadow-casting).

Holding a grudge isn't just unproductive, it's hazardous to your health. Mark Twain, that old-timey writer we learned about in school, author of Huckleberry Finn and one outrageous snow white mustache, knew you had to let your ya-yas out. "Anger is an acid that can do more harm to the vessel in which it is stored than to anything on which it is poured," Twain said. No telling if he smirked through his mustache when he realized his words rhymed. Tomorrow (July 7) is Global Forgiveness Day, a chance to set things right in our respective worlds.

Trying to communicate sometimes might be difficult. If you are single, you seem to know when you meet the right person. After August, someone of interest is likely to walk through the door. If you are attached, the two of you find much of this year to be very special, particularly once summer passes. You and your sweetie will want to create situations where you can be alone with each other! PISCES might not be realistic, but you enjoy his or her far-out ideas.
