The Big Blue Bus will host a meeting on August 1 to discuss new rates aimed at incentivizing cashless payment across the system. Proposed changes include reducing the regular one-way trip from $1.25 to $1.10 for customers who use a TAP card instead of cash, a new Annual Pass for $500, introduction of Blue to Business - BBB’s Employer Annual Pass Program, discontinuation of single-use tokens and introduction of a new 1-Ride Pass that is TAP enabled. The changes come as ridership continues to decline on bus systems and staff said incentivizing the TAP card over cash improves service overall.

A pair of local memorials to veterans of World War I and World War II have been restored thanks to efforts by Squadron 283 of the Sons of the American Legion. The Pacific Palisades based organization held a rededication ceremony for the WWI memorial last week at Santa Monica High School’s Memorial Greek Theater where the plaques are located and family members of one of the local veterans were able to attend. The refurbishment is part of a national effort by veterans’ organizations to maintain the memory of soldiers who fought more than a century ago. The nonprofit WWI centennial Commission, established by Congress to honor and recognize the centennial of America’s involvement with World War One, issued a plea at the national American Legion convention for the various American Legion organizations to locate and help restore WWI memorials. The request was specifically aimed at organizations on the West Coast because at the time of the war, the western portion of

the county was less densely populated and any memorials that were built were more likely to be lost. The original Santa Monica plaque was installed on May 30, 1921 at the original dedication of the theater and Jim Yocum, Squadron 283 Past Commander, said he knew about its location due to his children

Santa Monica High School student selected to participate in creative writing program
Santa Monica Public Library presents An Armchair Visit to Edinburgh
Local student writer Chloe Gottlieb selected to participate in University of Iowa creative writing program. Gottlieb will join students from Russia, Arabic-speaking countries throughout the Middle East and North Africa, and the United States. From July 1 to July 15, Chloe Gottlieb, student at Santa Monica High School, will take part in Between the Lines (BTL), a creative writing and cultural exchange program for promising young writers. “Through world literature classes, writing workshops, and a variety of seminars—including digital storytelling and slam poetry—students explore how literature and writing can lead to empathy, dialogue, and a shared understanding of the human condition, said Cate Dicharry, BTL coordinator. Gottlieb is one of 36 students selected for this session of BTL, which brings young writers from nine Arabic-speaking countries and territories, 11 U.S. states, and four cities across the Russian Federation to Iowa City, IA, a UNESCO City of Literature and home of the renowned Iowa Writers’ Workshop. During the two-week program, Gottlieb will participate in intensive writing workshops and seminars, attend literary events, and have an opportunity to give a public reading of her work. Gottlieb will work closely with established writers including Alisa Ganieva, a writer, literary critic, and editor originally from Dagestan, Russian Federation; Mary Hickman, an American poet and graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop; and Egyptian-Canadian novelist and playwright Karim Alrawi whose novel Book of Sands (2015) won the HarperCollins/UBC Best New Fiction Prize. Since 1967, the International Writing Program (IWP) has hosted more than 1,400 writers from more than 140 countries, connecting well-established writers from around the globe, introducing American writers to other cultures through reading tours, publishing books and journals, pursuing cultural diplomacy, and organizing tours, conferences, and other events around the world. BTL is a part of IWP’s programming, and is sponsored through grant funds provided by the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. State Department. - SUBMITTED BY DONNA BROOKS, COMMUNICATIONS COORDINATOR

CSULB, Case Western University, and Coe College who returned this summer to continue studying the northern third of the large excavation site. Hall joined the work later than her college counterparts due to her high school schedule and said the project took her out of her comfort zone. Their early start to the busy day allows for them to get in plenty of work before the summer heat becomes too unbearable. They wake up at 5 a.m., leave for the dig at 5:45 a.m., dig until 10 a.m., take a 30-minute water break and dig again until 1 p.m. They return to their dorms by 1:30 p.m. to avoid the more than 100-degree afternoon temperatures. Hall said the hard work is justified by the results. “The work, while physically grueling and laborious, is entirely worth the effort as it will help future (and present) historians piece together what life in Ancient Greece was like,” she said. For Hall, the physical work is as rewarding as the intellectual discovery. “A reason I love archaeology is that it ties in my love for history with exercise and physical labor (not widely accessible to a Santa Monica high school kid),” she said. “Holding a pick axe in my hand and keeping up with weight-lifting college guys is pretty empowering. Though it’s easy to get discouraged while shoveling dirt in 100-degree heat, it’s all worth it when you realize that the piece of pottery in your hand was held by someone hundreds and hundreds of years ago. It’s extremely humbling to be standing in the exact same place on the same tile that an Ancient Corinthian was.” This program is run by respected CSU Long Beach professor and director of the Los Angeles branch of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA), Professor Paul Scotton, alongside professor at Coe College, Dr. Angela Ziskowski. Hall said she has been a member of the Archaeological Institute of America (AIA) for two years, often attending archaeological lectures and lunches. However, her love for history and archaeology began much earlier.

Even in her early memories as a child, she recalls playing with a mock excavation toy set that occupied her for hours. After finally chipping away at a mini sand pyramid it revealed a plastic sphinx that she still has today. She also accredits much of her love for history to her father who is also a fellow history professor. “The passion for the past that he’s instilled in me has helped me pursue archaeology as a hobby and possibly as a major in university,” she said. She said her high school classes have also had an influence on her pursuits. “This past year, as a sophomore, I took the AP World History course,” she said. “Though it was a lot of work, it taught me how to work through stress, take thorough notes, manage time, and above all, to love history.” She said prior history classes were too brief to provide the kind of knowledge she craved and the AP class made a big difference. “AP World History (taught by Ms. Halley Cox, a wonderful, caring, and knowledgeable teacher) provided me with a place to expand my limited knowledge of history,” she said. “I will be forever grateful for that. Though I did an archaeological dig last summer, before AP World History, the class really helped me to lock in my passion for the subject. I find that I am able to offer much more genuine intellectual and historical opinion at site than I was before taking the class.” Hall said History is an underrated subject and that American students are shortchanged by a lack of rigorous history instruction during their pre-college years. “History is very often dissed by kids of my generation based off of the notion that it’s boring and useless,” she said. “The fact is, history is extremely relevant to today. By learning the patterns of history, one becomes more aware of the patterns of humanity, can tie in current world crises to those of the past, and can learn to not repeat mistakes from throughout history.” After completing high school, Hall is considering attending a British University with the prospect of pursuing a major in archaeology. editor@smdp.com

BBB staff said the changes follow a series of customer surveys, the most recent occurring in May of this year, that show customers make transportation decisions based on speed, reliability and convenience of service. “Part of our comprehensive and ongoing approach to better serve the needs of our customers includes incentivizing cashless boardings, to reduce both dwell time (time spent by customers conducting on board transactions at the farebox) and the average travel time,” said Suja Lowenthal, Transit Planning & Community Engagement Manager at Big Blue Bus. “A cashless fare transaction takes 4-5 seconds to conduct when boarding, whereas depositing cash in the farebox takes approximately 22 seconds; less boarding time equates to faster service.” BBB began using the TAP cards in 2015. The reusable, credit-card sized pass can store multi-ride passes and cash for use on several transit systems including BBB and Metro. Since that time, officials have embarked on several campaigns to make TAP the primary payment system including a 2015 fare change that dropped pass pricing relative to cash, the subsidy of a youth pass on TAP, a Buy One Get One promotion and recently the launch of mobile ticketing. “As a result of these efforts, cash now comprises 39% of all transactions on board Big Blue Bus, down 9% from the end of fis-

cal year 2014,” said Lowenthal. “The fare change Big Blue Bus is now proposing represents the next phase of our cashless boarding initiative,” she said. She said the changes will hopefully make the service more efficient. “By discounting the single-ride fare on TAP and eliminating the metal tokens, we hope to encourage greater use of prepaid fare media, and further reduce the ratio of cash paying customers from the current 39%, down to as low as 20%, while simultaneously lowering the cost of operating our service,” she said. The public hearing is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 1 from 6 - 7:30 p.m. at the Santa Monica Main Library. The hearing will allow for questions beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a short presentation from 6:30 – 7 p.m. and more questions until 7:30 p.m. Staff said public feedback could cause adjustments to the proposal and BBB will review all public comments received through Aug. 12. A revised proposal will be submitted to City Council in September and if approved, new fares would be in place by Nov. 1. Those are paid for but those are private memorials or headstones.” The refurbishment was accomplished with the help of American Legion Post 283 of Pacific Palisades and the technical expertise of Restoration ArTechs Inc. Squadron 283 has taken on the project of restoring several WWI memorials in the Los Angeles area and this is the first one completed. Yocum said the original project was for just the WWI memorial but upon inspection, the Squadron realized the WWII plaques were actually in worse shape so both were refurbished for about $5,000. A second ceremony for the WWII plaques will be held during the school year and will coincide with Samohi’s alumni festivities because it’s possible classmates of the WWII soldiers might still be nearby. Yocum said the kinds of people in the memorial are reflective of the modern city including an actor in the then brand new movie business, a young real estate attorney and a city bus driver. The recent ceremony was presided over by the Commander of American Legion Post 123 in Santa Monica, Roland Speers, among other local dignitaries, and included family for one of the named veterans.
Yocum said the family were located thanks to comprehensive local records. “The Santa Monica Public Library has digitized every newspaper back to 1875 by the Outlook,” he said. “We went back and traced some of the descendants. Not everybody was 18 and many of these soldiers had families and children. We did find some descendants and the one family that was actually able to attend. Nobody is local anymore that we were able to find and the family came down from Redding, three generations of one of the soldiers.” The Sons of the American Legion was created in 1932 as part of The American Legion. The organization includes individuals who parents or grandparents served in the military. The American Legion Auxiliary and the Sons of the American Legion make up The Legion Family. All three organizations place high importance on preserving American traditions and values, improving the quality of life for our nation’s children, caring for veterans and their families, and perhaps most, teaching the fundamentals of good citizenship. TWILIGHT CONCERTS SUMMER SERIES SPECIALS
LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Send comments to editor@smdp.com
Let the music play Editor:
So let me get this straight, the SM chief of police, Jackie Seabrooks, is concerned about several thousand music loving people gathering at the pier for ‘the twilight series’ , with no reports of violence , meanwhile, a riot of out of control homeless street people (reportedly drinking alcohol) are tearing apart the McDonalds at 2nd and Colorado, merely two blocks from the ‘cop shop’ and City Hall only a few days later. What’s wrong with this picture and why are these derelicts allowed to congregate unsupervised in such a public manner? The security guard appeared to be totally overwhelmed by these criminals (from looks of the video) and help is nowhere in sight. I think the chief needs to address the overwhelming numbers of dangerous street people wandering our streets at night and not come down so hard on law abiding music lovers.

NCAA Announces Support for LA 2024 The National Collegiate Athletic Association is adding its support for Los Angeles’ bid to host the 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. College sports continue to provide a pathway to Olympic competition, with nearly one in 10 of Rio 2016 Olympians from 160 National Olympic Committees having trained at America’s colleges and universities. If Los Angeles is selected as the 2024 Host City, American universities would continue to provide unparalleled training opportunities for the world’s athletes. LA’s campus facilities would host the Olympic and Paralympic Athlete Village, provide training facilities, and serve as the aquatics, badminton, judo and wrestling competition venues. LA 2024 is an athlete-led bid and is committed to creating the most personalized and positive Games experience for Olympians and Paralympians. By engaging more than 500 Olympians and Paralympians at athlete town hall forums across the nation, LA 2024 has incorporated an unprecedented amount of athlete feedback into its bid. The support from the NCAA is part of the #FollowTheSun to Olympic Agenda 2020 campaign: 20 activities in 20 days to show how LA 2024 will contribute to the IOC’s strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement, Olympic Agenda 2020. The support from the NCAA demonstrates LA 2024’s commitment to Olympic Agenda 2020’s Recommendation 18 - supporting athletes on and off the field of play.
The Association’s formal support of the bid is rooted in its core value of providing opportunities for student-athletes, said NCAA President Mark Emmert. NCAA President Mark Emmert said: “Many Olympians first get their start training and competing at NCAA colleges and universities, and I am thrilled to add our organization’s support to this athlete-led bid for the 2024 Games. Our member campuses are very excited to be a part of this world-class event as well, as the Los Angeles games will utilize the many outstanding facilities of our colleges and universities in the region for training and competition. Overall, the LA Games will showcase everything that is great about American sports and college sports in particular.” Janet Evans, four-time Olympic champion, LA 2024 Vice Chair and Director of Athlete Relations said: “LA 2024 is grateful for the NCAA’s support. As a former NCAA student-athlete, I know the impact and importance of college competition to Olympic competition. The unforgettable performances by NCAA student-athletes have and will continue to inspire the next generation and unite the world in celebration. “As an athlete-led bid, we’re committed to placing athletes at the center of all of our activities and college athletics are crucial to that effort. LA’s universities will provide an unparalleled Athlete Village experience and state-of-the-art competition venues. With no new permanent venues to build, LA 2024 is able to focus on meeting and exceeding athletes’ needs and providing a spectacular Games experience for everyone.” For more information visit LA24.org. — SUBMITTED BY LA2024

Strange Brew

You’ll barely be able to contain your pleasure over the unfolding events of the next five weeks. Go ahead and make the commitment you’ve been pondering. You’re ready! There’s an investment that pays next week. Libra and Gemini adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 5, 40, 12, 22 and 19.
ARIES (March 21-April 19)
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23)
The dilemma will be whether it is more worthwhile to be a well-rounded person or to focus in on what you do best and do it to the hilt. If you choose the latter, there will be people in your life who will fill in whatever you’re missing.
Your soul will speak to you through your curiosity about a subject. Also, when you are moved by an event or touched by beauty, that’s your soul speaking up.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) TAURUS (April 20-May 20) There’s a fixed number of things you can ask before the other person gets tired of answering. Be smart about it. The wrong question could put you in a worse position, whereas the right one will bust open your horizons.
You’re not sure what to do. There’s no objectively right answer. There’s no map. This is not navigating; it’s way-finding. Go forward with courage, and remember that winners fail a lot more times than losers do.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) GEMINI (May 21-June 21) The way it is today is the way it usually is. You’ll give before you get. You’ll pave the relationship road with plenty of goodwill and low expectations of return. And all will work out, as it usually does.
The animal nature is not to be tamed so much as respected. Today such respect may be shown by giving the wild spirit the space it needs. The natural inclination to fight for personal space is something to anticipate.
CANCER (June 22-July 22)
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
To succeed at the aim, it helps to be in love with the goal. And it helps even more to be in love with the process required to get to the goal. If you’re not in love, it’s still possible; it’s just harder.
Even for the very astute, appearances can and will deceive. Be careful not to look for the reasons things are so without first verifying whether they are really so.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) You are great with details, keeping people on track and understanding what needs to be done and the order in which it would be best accomplished. You’ll be paid well for applying these skills.

Your dreams, though unrealized, are alive and well and will remain so for as long as you feed them. Seize today’s opportunity to go a little further toward fleshing things out.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) If you thought about how hard it was going to be before you embarked, you wouldn’t have embarked. The seduction of life -- the misinformation, temptation and the like -- can work in your favor.
The impact of good light and temperature can’t be underestimated. To be living comfortably in the sunlight is to be fully alive. And if a friend is near, that completes the joy.
