Local swimmer seizes Olympic bid Wilimovsky qualifies for 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro

Where intelligence meets intensity Behind the scenes of a local’s ‘Jeopardy’ victory Editor’s note: This is the second installment about a Santa Monica man’s experience on the game show ‘Jeopardy!’

BY JEFFREY I. GOODMAN Daily Press Staff Writer

CITYWIDE Although Scott Richard

Lord’s journey to winning five consecutive shows on “Jeopardy!” was aired over the course of a week, in real life it happened all in one day. The popular TV quiz show hosted by Alex Trebek is taped well in advance, and five episodes of the show are shot each day. Lord, a Santa Monica resident, was called to a contestant podium on the first episode of the shooting day and proceeded to win five games. As his success continued, Lord

hardly had time to process what was happening. Only after taping finished for the day at about 3:30 p.m. was he able to let his accomplishments sink in. “It’s a high-energy thing,” he said. “I had so much energy and adrenaline running. But at the end of the day I was ripped.” Lord knew members of his family, including his wife, kids, brothers and nephews, would be in attendance to cheer for him, and he didn’t want to disappoint them. So he prepared for the show as much as he could. But he didn’t focus on learning new factoids. Instead, he closely watched “Jeopardy” on television and browsed a website that mainSEE JEOPARDY PAGE 7

RIO-BOUND: Local swimmer Jordan Wilimovsky qualified for the summer 2016 Olympic games.

BY JEFFREY I. GOODMAN Daily Press Staff Writer

RUSSIA Jordan Wilimovsky said last month that

it would be “cool” to compete on the world’s biggest athletic stage, making him a champion of the understatement. It’s a descriptor he still owns, although this week there’s a more fitting title for him: Olympic qualifier. The standout Team Santa Monica swim club member secured a bid to compete at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro by taking first place in the men’s 10-kilometer openwater race at the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia. Wilimovsky completed the course in 1hour

49 minutes and 48.2 seconds, finishing about 12 seconds ahead of Dutch runner-up Ferry Weertman. He became the first American since 2005 to win gold in the event at the elite international competition. Wilimovsky lingered towards the back of the front pack for the first half of the grueling race, then surged to the front with about 3 kilometers left and held off his opponents the rest of the way. “My strategy was to hang back for the first five kilometers, build up at the last five kilometers and have enough at the end to hopefully finish fast,” Wilimovsky told the Associated SEE OLYMPICS PAGE 6

SMDP: Why keep your businesses in Santa Monica? Verge: I’m a neighborhood guy and that’s a source of pride for me. This town is so welcoming. Once you’re here you’re just as welcome as if you grew up here for 60 years. There’s a big benefit to being in Santa Monica, especially right now. City Attorney’s office wins false advertising case As would-be lawyers begin taking the three-day state bar examination in California today, one local bar preparation company has agreed to a court judgment in the wake of allegations that it advertised grossly inflated pass rates. Barwinners, a Santa Monica-based company that, since 1999, has sold bar exam prep courses, has paid $130,000 in fines and restitution and agreed to a permanent court injunction following a joint investigation by the Santa Monica City Attorney’s Office and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. Prosecutors from those offices have obtained a final court judgment in the Santa Monica Superior Court against Barwinners and its parent company, Legal Education Unlimited, Inc. as part of their agreement with the company. The case arose from consumer complaints alleging that Barwinners falsely advertised inflated pass rates for its students taking the California bar exam. For years, Barwinners had advertised a 94 percent pass rate for first time bar-takers, and an 86 percent rate for repeat takers. But prosecutors alleged Barwinners’ actual pass rates were 49 percent for first time takers and 30 percent for repeat takers during the 2011-2013 period. According to the State Bar, average pass rates in California for the July 2014 exam were 61 percent for first time takers

and 14 percent for repeat takers. Barwinners sells an online bar exam prep course for $6,649 and individual tutoring programs ranging between $10,000 and $12,000. Under the agreed final court judgment: 1. Barwinners will pay a total of $130,000: $110,000 in restitution to former customers who took the bar exam but did not pass and $20,000 in fines. 2. Barwinners is required to provide a total of eight full scholarships for its online review courses to in-need students over the next two years. 3. Barwinners will be under a permanent injunction prohibiting it from any future false or misleading advertising. Any advertised pass rates must be based on data from the company’s most recent bar exam takers’ results. The State Bar of California requires all attorneys to pass the bar examination before being admitted to practice law in this state. “Whether you are hoping one day to be a lawyer or just trying to find a good deal and stretch your paycheck, consumers of all types have every right to be treated honestly. Businesses can brag but they cannot make up facts,” said Santa Monica prosecutor Eda Suh. “We will continue to crack down on all marketing claims that are false or misleading,” Suh added. “Anyone who has studied for the bar exam will tell you that it is one of the most stressful events in life. That makes consumers especially vulnerable to claims that sound too good to be true.”

Hockey and honky tonks is what we need SAVE THE CIVIC - PLAY HOCKEY!

Yeah, it sounded kind of crazy to me too, when this guy took the microphone at one of the public input meetings of the Santa Monica Civic Working Group, the “panel of nine” appointed to find solutions for reopening our historic auditorium, and uses for the area surrounding it. He introduced himself as Daryl Evans and said he was with the LA Kings. So we’re there talking about soccer fields and no-hotels-thank you, here at the beach in Santa Monica (jogging, swimming, walking, tennis, basketball, beach volleyball), it’s warm outside, as usual, and this guy’s talking about ice rinks? But before long quizzical expressions in the audience turned into some affirmative nodding. The notion: build the athletic field so many were there to support, but perched on top of a groundlevel ice rink. Evans said it was definitely doable, that blah blah blah people in Southern California love to skate (they do, I guess, just not me), and it would generate some healthy revenue. Well! There you go, the magic words, Daryl, because our very expensive consultants have been pushing from Day One for us to choose which options we “need” to pay for the renovations: large, medium or small hotel, how many office buildings, mixed use retail, how many restaurants? Giving short shrift to the overwhelming consensus of the public at each meeting I attended (all but one) that rejected such “solutions” and wanted more options and information on alternative ways to fund. A hockey rink? That sounds pretty alternative. Evans, it turns out, was a King player from 1981-85, and later coached the UCLA Bruins for two years, taking them to the national finals. He’s now the Kings’ Power Skating Consultant (what a job title!) and has announced their games on radio for 16 years. So, not just some guy who took the mic. He did plant a seed. After a few weeks of missed connections he finally got hold of Group member Phil Brock,

chair of our Recreation and Parks Commission and charged with Santa Monica’s green space, and told him a meeting was available Monday with Luc Robitaille, NHL Hall of Famer and record holder and, more importantly, a top gun with the Kings, their President of Business Operations. Brock invited Group member Jodi Summers and yours truly (that’s so cornball but I’ve always wanted to write it) to the meeting at the Kings’ El Segundo training facility (shared by the Lakers). So finally, after all these years of starving and enduring abuse, my journalism degree pays off: I get to stand on the same floor that Kobe Bryant practices on (gets there at 4:30 a.m. many mornings, a staff member told me). Seriously, even in the midst of Laker Armageddon, it made me very happy. I picked up a basketball that almost certainly Kobe dribbled and shot, but clever fellow though I am, I could not figure out a way to steal it. Rats. The tour we got of the three rinks (all with many skaters, from kids to Kings) and one basketball court, all the training and video viewing and locker rooms, was fun, but I was interested in the conversation between Luc and Jodi and Phil. Robitaille impressed me with his thoughtful discussion. He seemed neither to be pushing something, nor playing for advantage. I’ve learned that ice-skating does have a long history in Santa Monica. Ice Capades Chalet operated from 1966 until 1983, when Fred Segal turned it into their store. Dorothy Hamil trained there, Tai and Randy, many other stars and champions. The “Rockford Files” filmed there, and “Rocky” and Adrian had their first date there. We’ve all seen how popular our seasonal rink Downtown became. Now with the Culver City rink closed, there’s nothing for miles. “We’re definitely looking to build rinks, and we think Santa Monica’s a home run,” said Robitaille, a resident here for 13 years. “Very intriguing, because it’s already a high-end sports training center. We started our first high school league last year,” he told us, “eight teams, which we plan to

expand to 30.” The Kings’ master plan, he said, relies on fostering talent at the local level, and that requires rinks. “LA has very few. Indoors, year around only Pasadena and Van Nuys. “We are looking at building in Sylmar, and Reseda, and the space you would have available there [at the Civic] would work perfectly,” he said. “Roller hockey on the beach in Santa Monica goes way back, and in the early ‘90s the NHL ran a tournament there,” Robitaille related. “But right now, in the world of hockey,” he said, “California is the top state.” This is early stages of discussion and I’m not even positive I’m completely sold on the idea, but it sure is worth pursuing. Sports and the arts together equal entertainment, so they’re in the same ballpark philosophically, and perhaps should be literally. The benefits of athletic participation, by all ages, are overwhelmingly positive. Real community benefits. We’ll have to see what kind of deal the Kings might offer, but I hope they are as interested as Robitaille seemed to indicate. Two other big advantages to that partnership: the Kings own the Galaxy, LA’s very popular pro soccer team - what a great tie-in for the athletic field. And they’re all owned by AEG, one of the biggest entertainment conglomerates in the world. Who knows what the mutual benefits might be, with the Civic reopened, and the Greek Theater and Barnum Hall just across the street at Samohi? OK, now I’m getting excited. WHAT DO I KNOW ABOUT MUSICALS?

Enough to know that the Ruskin Group Theater has a hit on their hands in “Sneaky Ole Time,” their new production opening Saturday. I went to a dress rehearsal, admittedly with low expectations, and was knocked out. Built around the hit songs of Paul Overstreet, it takes the clichés about commitment and marriage and turns them every which way in a Tennessee honky tonk Twilight Zone setting that keeps your wondering and smiling. Great cast, terrific live band, clever, funny book, perfect direction. Yeah, I liked it. QUOTE OF THE WEEK: “The fear of death follows from the fear of life. A man who lives fully is prepared to die at any time.” — Mark Twain CHARLES ANDREWS has lived in Santa Monica for almost 30 years and wouldn’t live anywhere else in the world. Really. Us homeless, we do not get much of a chance to speak up about the things Daily Press writers write about but now that some old blabbering woman by the name of Brennan made her racism known to everyone I want to bring up that there are other types of racism here in Santa Monica that everyone should pay attention to but don’t. The Daily Press prints stuff from a group of writers called SMART who yap on and on about heights and depths and landmarking and shadows and open space of buildings being built in Santa Monica. While I don’t got no education like your SMART writers that don’t mean I got no set of brains to figure out what they be talking about. I think that SMART writers are using code words to make sure that there are no buildings being built for the homeless, the poor, the peoples of color and the new immigrants to live in here where I be in Santa Monica. First of all, I got a lot of experience about “open space” because I’m in it a lot more often than not. If the SMART writers are hankering for “open space” leave the move to Wyoming and befriend buffaloes. Buffaloes like “open space.” Us homeless don’t like “open space” because it means that we got no roofs over our heads. Also the SMART Writers write about not wanting to live in the shadows. Boo hoo! Boo hoo! The rich who live in the rich peoples city that is Santa Monica don’t want to live in shadows! What about the homeless, the poor, the peoples of color and the new immigrants? All of us have been living in the shadows for years and years and years! There might be one hundred million people living in them shadows in this country and maybe some groundhogs too. The SMART writers worry about living in shadows. What nerve! And then the SMART writers talk about landmarking. Have you seen the broken down dump they want to landmark? There’s some auditorium building down at Main and Pico that looks too ugly even to be a warehouse. They got these apartment buildings on San Vincente that look ready to be torn down but they want to save them. I don’t need to know anything about architecture to know that when you landmark dumps then you can’t build something larger and better to fill the real housing needs of people and landmarking is just a racist way of blocking people they don’t want living in Santa Monica from living here. Now what the SMART Writers don’t tell you is that President Obama, the USA Attorney General and HUD plan to bust open rich people’s cities like Santa Monica with their schemes and code words to keep the homeless, the poor, the peoples of color and the new immigrants from living here. In New York City, Mayor De Blassio is putting housing for the poor and the homeless right next door to rich peoples homes. I hear in Brooklyn Heights where a lot of Wall Street Crooks live, housing is going up right next to building with $5-10 million condos and $10-20 million dollar town homes. Us homeless got equal rights to live where it’s best to live and Mayor De Blassio would never put up with the ways the SMART Writers are trying to block the homeless, the poor, the peoples of color and the new immigrants from living in Santa Monica. How do we get lots of housing built quickly in Santa Monica? New York City got its own income tax and Santa Monica should have its own city income tax. I am suggesting a 20 percent income tax on people making between $50,000 and $100,000 and a 40 percent income tax on people making more than $100,000 and a 60 percent income tax on people making more than $250,000. Also, Santa Monica sits on land that was once Indian tribal land. Once the City of Santa Monica makes its peace with Native Americans lots of money can be raised for housing with the building of a bunch of Indian casinos. All that Wasted open space in Santa Monica, parks for lawn bowling, parks with tennis courts, the decrepit auditorium warehouse building at Pico and Main, the parking lots at 5th Street and Arizona — can all be turned into housing faster than fast. There should be no height limit on housing for the poor and the homeless and buildings 20 -25 stores high would be fair shadows be damned. I think City Manager Rick Cole said that he wants Santa Monica to be a City of Social Justice. We can do it. Let’s get it done.

The son of Rolf and Wendy Wilimovsky didn’t start swimming until he was about 9years-old, but he’s made eye-popping improvements in the sport since trying out for an area lifeguard team more than a decade ago. He took second place in the 10-kilometer at the open-water nationals in 2014 to qualify for the Pan Pacific Championships in Australia, where he finished 16th in the same event. Less than a year later, he’s a legitimate contender in the event won by Tunisia native

We think it’s going to be the best concept of all the restaurants I’ve done. SMDP: How far do you want to take the restaurant empire? Oussama Mellouli in the 2012 Olympics in London. Indeed, just a year separates Wilimovsky from the opening ceremonies next August at the Summer Games in Brazil. Qualifying for the Olympics alongside Wilimovsky was fellow American Sean Ryan, who took fourth place with a time of 1:50:03.3. Their competition field in Russia also included Greece’s Spyridon Gianniotis, a two-time10-kilometer world champion, who claimed the bronze medal with a time of 1:50:00.7. An alumnus of Malibu High, Wilimovsky is taking a year off from Northwestern University to train for the Olympics under Team Santa Monica coach Dave Kelsheimer and focus on his budding swimming career. Kelsheimer accompanied Wilimovsky to the world championships, serving as an assistant coach on the USA Swimming staff. Wilimovsky will spend many hours at Santa Monica Swim Center in the coming months as he prepares for the athletic journey of a lifetime. Pretty “cool” indeed. jeff@smdp.com

SMDP: What are the similarities between the restaurant and rental businesses? Verge: I’m adding value to whatever I’m doing and it was a nice choice doing Westside Rentals. It’s always been phenomenal and I’m proud that a lot of kids’ first jobs are with Westside Rentals. SMDP: What does the future hold? Verge: The 10-year plan is to keep enjoying this crazy life and providing opportunities. I have a great team from the top job down and that starts from the top of the group. We’ve got to provide and try to get better every day, that’s what we do, that’s what we’re going for. We have a couple of restaurant concepts we want in Santa Monica so we will definitely do two or three more.

Netflix wants 'Arrested', not Cosby BY SEAN DALY TheTVPage.com

Netflix is working to bring back ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT, but not Bill Cosby. Negotiations for a fifth season of the Mitch Hurwitz comedy are “plugging along,” Ted Sarandos, the network's Chief Content Officer said Tuesday. “It is a really complex deal.” “The talent are very busy and working on other shows, but also because the show is owned by Fox. So we have to make our deal with Fox. And all the talent has to make their deals with Fox. It is our intent to make our intent to have a new season of Arrested Development and all

tains encyclopedic records of previous clues and answers. “I would just look through to see the types of questions,” Lord said. “Because it’s partly what you know, but a lot of it is getting a little bit used to the way they phrase things. They often give clues in the answer. Sometimes you do know the answer, but what they’re looking for is a little different than what you’d think.” Although pure knowledge and familiarity with the show format are crucial to success, getting accustomed to the contestant buzzer is arguably even more important. When Lord went in for an audition after passing the online test, he got to practice with a pen that resembles the show’s electronic response clicker. “You’ll see people who obviously know the answer,” he said. “Sometimes all three people know the answer. But it’s all about ringing in the quickest.” Lord recalled several instances in which he tried to ring in but an opponent was faster and produced a correct response, making Lord glad he wasn’t the quickest clicker. The skill of ringing in was seemingly mastered by Ken Jennings, who won 74 games in a row in 2004. “As he played game after game, he got better and better at timing the buzzer,” Lord said of the record-holding champion. Before taping began, Lord said, show coordinators allowed him and his fellow contestants to practice using the clicker to make sure they were able to ring in successfully. FROM BETTOR TO BEST

In his first game, which aired July 20, the opening round doesn’t start off well for Lord. He falls behind early, going $200 in the hole after missing his first answer attempt on a question about river names. But he doesn’t stay down for long. He

the negotiations are underway.” Sarandos also said there are still no plans to broadcast a Bill Cosby stand-up comedy special, which had been scheduled to air last November. “I don't think it is appropriate to release that,” he told reporters, acknowledging that THE COSBY SHOW continues to be available through the company's DVD-by-mail service. “The Cosby Show is produced by NBC and owned by Carsey Werner.” “The [cancelled] projects before were produced by Netflix and branded Netflix shows. We think we acted - and will continue to act appropriately - when it comes to Mr. Cosby.” makes it “back on the plus side,” as Trebek likes to say, on a $600 question about the umbilical cord and keeps the momentum going in a category about medical knowledge. Then, in his introductory interview, he tells Trebek about the time Placido Domingo sang at his Santa Monica home. “It sounds like a joke, but yes,” he says. “A few years ago my mother’s wife passed away from Alzheimer’s and since then we’ve hosted an event at our house to try to raise money to fight the disease. Through some people I knew we were able to ask Placido if he would come and sing, and to our surprise and delight he said yes.” When play resumes, Lord looks at ease. He trails defending two-day champion Jennifer Morrow by $4,300 late in the first round, but goes on an impressive roll and earns a narrow edge. “Scott did some fast catching up in that first round,” Trebek said. Early in the second round, when Lord comes across a Daily Double in a category about the Bill of Rights, he doesn’t hesitate. He bets all of his $6,600 and offers the correct response to a clue about the Fourth Amendment, doubling his sum. In the final round, with Lord holding a $3,100 lead over Morrow, the contestants are asked to name the American-born poet who quotes from Richard Wagner. Third-place contestant Mary Ciconte incorrectly guesses Walt Whitman and coughs up her entire sum. Morrow also writes Whitman but bets conservatively, retaining $12,500. It all comes down to Lord, and his response is the correct one: T.S. Eliot. “I bet enough to make sure that even if the next-highest person wins and bets everything, you still have enough to beat them,” Lord said. “I was fortunate to get an answer I knew.” He adds $11,401 to his total, finishing his first game with $29,001 and the right to keep playing. He’s just getting started. jeff@smdp.com

CRIME WATCH B Y

P R E S S

S T A F F

Crime Watch is culled from reports provided by the Santa Monica Police Department. These are arrests only. All parties are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

ON JULY 15, AT ABOUT 10:11 A.M. Officers patrolling in the downtown area received a call of a robbery that just occurred on the Santa Monica Pier. The victim told dispatchers that a male, Black wearing a blue shirt had grabbed his cell phone from his hand, threatened him, threw the cell phone into the bushes, and then left the area eastbound up the Pier ramp toward Ocean Avenue. The officers located a male matching that description sitting on a bench in the 1500 block of Palisades Park. The officers contacted the male, later identified as Jonathan Atwood, 27 of Santa Monica, and detained him. Before they began questioning Atwood, he told the officers he took the phone from the victim. Atwood was upset with the victim, who he did not know and had never seen before, because Atwood thought the victim was taking pictures of girls. The victim identified Atwood as the man who stole his phone. The damaged phone was eventually recovered by the officers. Atwood was arrested for robbery and vandalism and transported to the Santa Monica Jail for booking. Bail was set at $50,000.

Proportionally (64 times as many people live in the U.S.), American police would still have fired only 128 rounds last year if they showed Norway’s restraint.
