Going beyond medicine to fight cancer UCLA SIMMS/MANN CENTER OFFERS FREE SUPPORT SERVICES AMID FUNDING UNCERTAINTY
BY JEFFREY I. GOODMAN Daily Press Staff Writer
BIG FISH Matt Hall
Joshua Capshaw caught a hammerhead shark on the Santa Monica pier on Aug 8.
UCLA Surgeries, drugs and chemotherapy could be used to address the cancer cells above Aaron Atkins’ left eye. But they weren’t going to strengthen his resolve or raise his spirit. Luckily for the 30-year-old Santa Monica resident, he had the UCLA Simms/Mann Center for Integrative Oncology. Since being diagnosed with neurotropic melanoma more than three years ago, Atkins has regularly visited the center, which offers a variety of support services at little or no cost to cancer patients. “Simms/Mann has been instrumental in getting my mind right,” he said. The center has played such an integral role in Atkins’ battle that he and friends are donating half the proceeds from their T-shirt campaign, which wrapped up Aug. 1, to Simms/Mann. And his financial support comes at a pivotal juncture for Simms/Mann, which serves about 2,400 patients each year with an annual budget just under $2 million. The center, which relies heavily on philanthropic support, is losing significant funding for the young adult programming that Atkins has accessed. Whereas one treatment of chemotherapy can cost a patient’s family $10,000, the Simms/Mann center needs just $1,000 per patient to provide psychological and emotional support, according to center director

Anne Coscarelli, a longtime Santa Monica resident. Many of the center’s services are offered without fees to account for the financial burdens placed on cancer patients and their families, she said. “You can see a psychologist or social worker for less than it costs you to park at UCLA,” Coscarelli said of the center’s services. “When you’re dealing with cancer, medicine is important but it isn’t enough.” That’s a dynamic with which Atkins became familiar after doctors found cancer around his left eye. He said he underwent surgery and numerous SEE UCLA PAGE 5
Dessert-centric businesses find success in Santa Monica BY SEAN MCDONALD Daily Press Intern

Santa Monica sure buys a lot of desserts. The city is full of bakeries, ice-cream shops and other business that specialize in selling sweets. There are currently 25 bakeries licensed to operate in Santa Monica and 17 ice cream/yogurt stores. With all these options you would expect there to be a lot of competition. But according to several business owners that isn’t necessarily the case. “The largest part of the business is the trade, like contractors, the yacht club, the beach club,” said owner of Caprice

French Pastries, Jean-Louis Kippelen. “There is competition but we sell to another part of the market.” This idea of catering to different customer demographics seems to be a trend among many of Santa Monica’s dessert-centric businesses. Johnny Rocco, the owner of Rocco’s Cheesecake sells his desserts to an entirely different part of the market than Kippelen. Rocco has cultivated a presence with the aid of his website and, most importantly, with Yelp. This has allowed him access to a large customer base that uses these online tools to satisfy their sweet tooth. “Yelp has been really good, people are just raving about Yelp,” said Rocco. “90 percent of everybody new that comes SEE SWEETS PAGE 3

Downtown
New wine shop/bar/marketplace from Rustic Canyon company Restaurateurs Josh Loeb and Zoe Nathan continue to grow their restaurant family from within, partnering with Kathryn and Tug Coker and existing Rustic Canyon team members to open Esters, an integrated wine shop, bar, and market experience in downtown Santa Monica.
Housed in the historic Telephone Building, a 1937 Art Deco landmark, Esters is across the hall from the restaurant group’s newly opened Cassia, where Kathryn also curates the wine program. The shop, whose name is derived from the chemical compound that contributes to a wine’s bouquet, offers a classic and diverse selection of more than 200 wines from small producers and boutique wineries, whose stories co-owner and wine director Kathryn knows and loves. Esters appeals to shoppers on-the-go, with a marketplace offering a wide variety of artisanal items, as well as to guests lingering over glasses of wine, with paired dishes from Rustic Canyon executive chef Jeremy Fox and pastry chef Jun Tan, here in the chef de cuisine role. “With Esters, we’re creating a cozy, approachable, neighborhood atmosphere where people can pop in for a glass of champagne and a bite to eat with friends and family, stock up on specialty items for a dinner party or picnic, as well as learn more about wine by exploring our fun and unique selection,” says Kathryn, whose passion for wine led to her overseeing the wine program for Rustic Canyon and creating the initial list for Milo & Olive. The wine list offers something for everyone and accommodates a wide range of budgets. In the $40-75 range, guests can expect great Burgundies, Grower Champagnes, and funky biodynamic wines produced by little-known winemakers from Santa Barbara to Sicily. A high-end wine room showcases bottles priced above $75, and the “Tug’s Picks” section, features affordable weeknight bottles, mostly priced under $25. At least 15 wines are
poured by the glass at any given time. A curated selection of craft beers, specialty imports, and premium spirits from small production distilleries around the world is also available. Rustic Canyon Bar Manager Aaron Ranf pours a selection of sipping mezcals and stirs up classic cocktails, including the Old Fashioned and Sazerac. In addition to an array of cheeses and cured meats, Jeremy and Jun continue their commitment to local, seasonal products, incorporating them into light dishes, such as smoked California fish in a jar with pickled ramps, cook pigs ranch pork terrine with grape mustard, and cucumber panzanella with dill and house-cultured yogurt. The marketplace component features grab-and-go artisanal items and rare, limited-edition products from friends and suppliers whose work inspires the team. Highlights include house made sandwiches, loaves of Zoe’s renowned breads from Milo & Olive, gourmet chocolates from Compartés, raw honey from Massey Honey Co., Solstice Canyon almond butter and Bottle Stock wine accessories. Esters seats 50 indoors with a 20-seat, U-shaped bar and a fruit tree enclosed patio that seats 40. Esters is located at 1314 7th St. and is open Tuesday-Sunday 4-11 p.m., FridaySaturday 4 p.m.-12 a.m. and closed on Mondays. Beginning on Aug. 11, Esters will open Tuesday-Sunday at 11 a.m. For more information, visit www.esterswineshop.com or call (310) 899-6900. - SUBMITTED BY ELISE FREIMUTH

Another business that has found a different type of success is DK’s Donuts. DK’s has been a staple of the Santa Monica community for over thirty years, which has earned them a stable customer base that just won’t
buy their baked goods anywhere else. “We cater to the locals around the area,” said co-owner Mayly Tao. “We have people who’ve been coming here for over twenty years as a part of their daily routine.” DK’s is also open 24/7, which allows them access to certain customers that some bakeries might not be able to sell to. “We have the late night crowd of all the drunk people. We get nurses who finish work late. We get people of all shapes and sizes.” If customers are not able to stop by DK’s in person, they also ship their donuts through services like GrubHub, sending them as far as Florida. EDITOR@smdp.com

MY ANNUAL TRIP TO LONDON IS COM-
ing up. It’ll be my twentieth journey to the U.K. Recent trips have given me time to explore areas of the capital off the beaten path. East London, Whitechapel, Brick Lane, Shoreditch, Islington and Hackney are particularly interesting and lively. The Underground aka “the Tube”, London buses and commuter trains make getting around town easy. Mass transit in the United Kingdom is not cheap. A nine-minute Tube ride from central London to Stratford, site of the 2012 Olympics, can cost as much four pounds eighty ($7.50) for a single ticket, peak adult fare. London buses are cheaper. I use an Oyster Card (prepaid transit pass) and travel off peak periods to reduce travel expense in London. With public transportation being so convenient, private cars are a liability. Fuel (petrol) is twice as expensive as it is here. Overnight hotel parking can easily run thirty pounds ($45) even at tourist-class hotels. Street parking is by permit and there’s a congestion fee collected on personal vehicle trips in central London. Other benefits make mass transit preferable to private cars. Tube trains run every two or three minutes on key lines. I’ve never had to wait more than five minutes for a bus in London. Facilities are clean and safe. Connectivity between lines and transportation modes make the entire “Transport for London” system convenient and desirable. Here, transportation planners and engineers purposely remove traffic lanes and jam traffic in a misguided effort to force us out of our personal vehicles and walk, bicycle or ride the bus, instead. It’s all stick and no carrot. In most world class cities transportation agencies offer subsidized pricing, clean and safe facilities, sensible connectivity and most importantly, reliable and frequent on-time service on exclusive, dedicated elevated or subterranean alignments to attract riders and get them out of their personal vehicles. If you that think Santa Monica’s method of encouraging alternate transit use is on track, look at the Big Blue Bus stops. If City Hall can’t get them right, what makes you think they could develop rider-enticing transportation alternatives? Example: Big Blue just announced a cutback in #2 line (Wilshire Boulevard) service from Westwood Village. Last bus will be at 9:20 p.m. instead of 10:20 p.m. Buses on key lines such as 3M (Montana Avenue/UCLA) run every 25 to 30 minutes, even at peak travel times. At a buck a fare, it’s a lot cheaper than London, but half-hour buses? Please. And, that’s assuming your bus is on schedule or won’t stop because it’s fully loaded. It’s obvious that policy makers don’t know what customer service is. Another great thing about London is the food. Inexpensive, take-away, meals from temporary sidewalk stalls are commonplace. Except for the toniest shopping areas or “High Streets,” a wide variety of tasty, two or three course, hot meals are quickly and inex-
pensively served up at pop-up food courts in neighborhoods from Soho to Spitalfields. I’ve sampled Chinese, Thai, Mexican, traditional British, Jamaican, Italian, Indian, Argentinian, Ethiopian and Middle Eastern cuisines all over London. Most meals cost five to seven quid (about $10) plus a pound ($1.50) for a beverage. It’s a bargain. The self-contained stalls are operated by a family or person, others by large catering or food vending services which explains why the “Build your own burrito” stalls in different neighborhoods are alike down to signage, layout and ingredients. They’re all regulated and pay rent and operating fees. In 2012, a pop-up food truck court on a privately-owned used car lot at 14th Street and Santa Monica Boulevard drew large crowds on its opening day but met opposition from neighboring restaurant owners afraid that the trucks would draw away their customers. City Hall policymakers stepped in and the venue was immediately shut down pending establishment of regulations and fees for mobile food vendors. Since then, the fate of food trucks has improved. Along the eastern end of Ocean Park Boulevard near the Santa Monica Business Park they provide lunchtime meals for office workers. Again, nearby indoor eatery operators worry that customers are being lured away by the tasty and inexpensive take-away lunches offered by the mobile food vendors. At the old Truman Brewery on London’s Brick Lane, full-service cafes and restaurants are always packed because they offer much broader menus, are more comfortable and serve alcoholic beverages. The food trucks on our Main Street on Tuesday nights also provide a compliment to the leisurely and more expensive indoor eateries with full service, sit down dining. Our food trucks, like London’s take-away food stalls, are a quick, inexpensive alternative to indoor dining. And, a variety of food outlets contribute to an area’s exciting vibe. The 1200 block of the 3rd Street Promenade would be a perfect location for a dozen or so pop-up, sidewalk food stalls and inject novelty and excitement onto what has become the “deadest block on the Promenade.” They would also provide the perfect weekend opportunity for Downtown eateries to set up stalls and enable the public to sample a limited selection of moderately priced comestibles. Our Planning Department staff, Planning Commission members and City Council need to stop being so parochial. We all want a good experience. When it’s positive, everyone benefits as crowds and spending increase. When it’s negative, people go elsewhere. A less punitive approach to getting around and a wider range of food opportunities from quick sidewalk/street take-away to full-service restaurants would breathe new life into the Santa Monica experience.

The discovery led to two more surgeries and brachytherapy, also known as internal radiation, followed by drug injections that caused hair loss and headaches and made him feel like he had the flu on and off for six months. Earlier this year, a second recurrence and the proximity of the tumor to Atkins’ brain led surgeons to recommend complete removal of his left eye. He had surgery in mid-May, was released from the hospital in mid-June and recently returned to work as a recruiter for a consulting firm. “As I’ve gone through this process, I’ve realized you have to sacrifice your independ-

It’s about understanding that this is a journey, that this is going to be with me the rest of my life.” Atkins’ approach has come with the guidance of staffers at the Simms/Mann center, which offers “wrap-around” care services like psychiatry, spiritual care and nutrition counseling. One-on-one sessions with health and social service professionals take place in an environment that is meant to be different than that of a hospital. “The center has been so important to Aaron in his ability to get through all of these really devastating circumstances that he’s been in,” Coscarelli said. “We help patients find ways ... to manage the stressors and come out of this in a better place.”

rounded by huge dome-shaped gas-fired brick kilns, with very tall brick chimneys and assorted conveyors. It looked like an abandoned nuclear power plant. Supplying the brick clay was a giant, 150 ft. deep pit with sheer walls and traversed by a railroad trestle. This excavation extended from Cloverfield to 26th and Colorado to Broadway. Gladding McBean and adjacent Pacific Clay Co. closed by the Depression. To believe that this giant pit in the middle of S.M would be filled up someday and then have beautiful, multi-story buildings built on this fill is a real achievement. There is a lot more but not now. Bergamot Station is a remnant (Freight Train Stop). So you can see that a historical record would interest old and young, a before and after. Press will publish a request for anyone having photos of Santa Monica’s Industrial Corridor circa 1920-1950. The S.M. Historical Society has none. The S.M. Library Archives have only the reels (in the hundreds) of every edition of the defunct S.M. Outlook, near impossible to search through for possible photos. Books in the library show only photos of the beaches, pier, downtown, fine homes and man of the Douglas Aircraft Co. No photos of the grimy factories, shops, yards, railroad and bean field are shown. My goal is to compile a photo history of “Blue Collar” Santa Monica for the Historical Society. If you are not familiar with early Santa Monica, let me fill you in some because the changes with time are amazing. Today, the beautiful buildings along Colorado from Cloverfield eastward are outstanding. Before SM’s revitalization, the largest factory was the Gladding McBean brick plant covering about 20 acres. 40 percent of worldwide electricity generation. The International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts that global demand will continue rising to record levels, topping nine billion metric tons annually by 2019. And despite efforts by China to moderate coal consumption, China still accounts for three-fifths of this short-term “demand growth.” Meanwhile, India and other countries in Asia are also ramping up their coal use, offsetting declines in Europe and the U.S. “The world is not going to stop using coal ... so we have to change how the world does use it,” says Eric Redman, an outspoken advocate for realistic clean energy solutions and co-chair of the Seattle-based Summit Power Group. He says that the key is in teaching the world how to utilize carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) technologies, which take carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions out of smokestacks and reuses them or stores them in forms so they won’t enter the atmosphere and exacerbate climate change. In Oct. 2014, Canadian utility SaskPower launched the world’s first fullscale “clean coal” plant in Saskatchewan. Named one of National Geographic’s “10 Energy Breakthroughs of 2014 that Could Change Your Life” and winner of the 2015 “POWER Plant of the Year” award, the Boundary Dam Power Station Unit 3 CCS project has now exceeded expectations, capturing 135,000 metric tons of CO2 in less than a year. The plant is on target to absorb as much as a million metric tons of CO2 annually. And in June 2015, SaskPower opened its
Capture Test Facility, a lab that lets researchers test equipment, chemical innovation and engineering designs in a highly controlled environment. Other companies are also using the facility to develop and test CCS technologies for potential use in their own power plants. Other promising CCS technologies in the works include coal gasification, whereby energy from coal is converted into a gas that can be burned as CO2 is removed, and the Polaris Membrane System, which uses a specially designed membrane to capture 90 percent of the CO2 emitted from a coal-burning power plant. These technologies are indeed promising, but cost still remains the main obstacle to making CCS mainstream. “It is obviously cheaper to dump something in the atmosphere (for free) than to pay the capital and operating costs of capturing and sequestering it,” says Summit Power’s Redman. “There are very few mechanisms currently available to help pay those costs,” he says, adding: “Globally we’ve so far spent on carbon capture and sequestration less than one percent of what we’ve already spent on renewable energy, so naturally we are not yet very far down the CCS cost curve.” And while many environmentalists shudder to think that we will continue to burn coal at all, we may not have a choice. “I think most climate experts would agree that the maximum realistic deployment of renewables, efficiency and nuclear power will not, by themselves, allow us to limit atmospheric concentrations of CO2 to 450 parts per million by mid-century,” says Redman, adding that CCS is both necessary and ultimately inevitable. “But we need to move more rapidly.” EarthTalk® is written and edited by RODDY SCHEER and DOUG MOSS and is a registered trademark of E - The Environmental Magazine (www.emagazine.com). ON JULY 30 Officers from the Crime Impact Team were conducting a targeted “bike theft” operation to address the incidence of thefts of bicycles in the downtown area. The decoy bicycle, owned by the Santa Monica Police Department which is equipped with a GPS tracking system, was locked and left parked in the area of Alley 3rd and Colorado Blvd. At approximately 12:05 p.m. officers were alerted that the bicycle had been tampered with and was traveling away from its parked location. Officers subsequently located the suspect and the bike in the 1400 block of Idaho. The suspect was taken into custody and transported to the Santa Monica Jail where he was booked for grand theft and a probation violation. Dennis Lee Wallace, 22, homeless, was denied bail.

Sudoku Fill in the blank cells using numbers 1 to 9. Each number can appear only once in each row, column, and 3x3 block. Use logic and process of elimination to solve the puzzle. The difficulty level ranges from (easiest) to (hardest).
GETTING STARTED There are many strategies to solving Sudoku. One way to begin is to examine each 3x3 grid and figure out which numbers are missing. Then, based on the other numbers in the row and column of each blank cell, find which of the missing numbers will work. Eliminating numbers will eventually lead you to the answer. ■ Failed European Business Models: (1) Grande Hotel San Calogero, the planned centerpiece of a Sicilian tourist renaissance, is still nowhere close to opening -- 61 years after construction began. It took 30 years to build, but then developers fought for 10 years over its management, and only later was a serious drainage deficiency discovered (repair of which Rome’s news site The Local reported in July remains unfunded). (2) Construction of the ultra-modern Don Quixote airport (in Ciudad Real, Spain, about an hour from Madrid) was finished in 2006,

but the $1 billion facility never opened, and in July, was sold to a Chinese investor for the equivalent of $11,000. (Bonus: Fictional character Don Quixote was, himself, noted for delusions of grandeur.) ■ Unclear on the Concept: Overlooked by the roundup of “state fair” foods listed in News of the Weird two weeks ago was the debut in June, at California’s San Diego County Fair, of the deep-fried Slim-Fast bar. This year you often express an extremely nurturing quality. Your ability to communicate and spread your wings will be enhanced. If you are single, you will enjoy the company of a more vital and fun type of person than you have in the past. You might want to date for a while before you commit. If you are attached, the two of you will want to recreate the beginning of your relationship, where you often took off together and focused on what the other said. A new purchase will result in even more happy times for the two of you. CANCER often understands you better than you do.
You have to take risks in order to develop and change, which means you have to be OK with making a fool of yourself sometimes. On National Failures Day this Saturday, embrace the possibility of failing with open arms. Don’t let your fears paralyze you. “I think people fear failure because it’s a big hit to their self-esteem, said James Reese meandering down Sunset Boulevard. “You have to let go of your ego if you want to improve yourself, because you’re
inevitably going to fail a few times in the process. This Saturday, adjust your attitude toward failure. Let go of the debilitating perfectionist inside.
