Big ‘Mac’ on campus Samohi to honor 1955 alumnus at alumni picnic BY JEFFREY I. GOODMAN Daily Press Staff Writer
If there’s one event James “Mac” McPherson hates missing, it’s the annual alumni picnic at Santa Monica High School. The 1955 alumnus always looks forward to bumping into old friends, reminiscing about old times and supporting his old stomping grounds. And he’ll certainly be in attendance at this year’s edition Sept. 17, when he will receive the “Spirit of Samohi” award for his years of dedication to the high school. “It really means a lot,” McPherson said of the honor in a recent phone interview. “I don’t work for plaques, but it means a lot to me.” McPherson, 80, has supported
Samohi throughout his adult life. He’s met with principals, raised money for a variety of programs and attended numerous sporting events, even serving as a volunteer assistant coach on the Vikings baseball team over the years. His work with local youths has extended beyond the high school and into Santa Monica sports leagues, where he has mentored children in football and baseball throughout the last five decades. McPherson recalled a time he ran into a player who had challenged his authority some 20 years earlier. The player thanked him for teaching him a lesson. “I always wanted to be a coach,” the former football player said. “I like to teach. When I was teaching

BY MATTHEW HALL Michael Weitz knew something was wrong. The longtime Santa Monica physician was sitting outside when he felt unusual pain in his chest after swallowing cold liquid, and he figured he probably had cancer. “I had this sixth sense,” he said, a bronchoscopy later confirming his dark suspicions. That was about 10 years ago. For Weitz, who now has one lung, it’s a marvel considering he was told he had no more than six months to live. The 59-year-old remains director of the emergency department at Providence Saint John’s Health Center, and he’s committed to the fight against one of the most common killers in the country. Tom Stratton is one of the many locals that use a bicycle to travel short distances within the City, and like many of those riders he has had the unfortunate experience of returning to a bike rack to find the bicycle missing. However, Stratton is among the rare riders that was able to recover his bike before it was lost to the wilds of Los Angeles. Bicycle theft is a consistent problem in Santa Monica. According to the Santa Monica Police Department, 597 bicycles were reported stolen in 2015 and 289 were reported stolen in the first eight months of this year. SMPD said the first step to preventing theft is to make sure the bike is properly locked and secured, preferably with a U-lock as they are

Supervisor Sheila Kuehl has announced that the “summer” beach bus which has been running this summer between the transit station at Warner Center, on the Orange Line, in Woodland Hills and the Santa Monica Pier via Topanga Canyon will now run yearround. In previous years, the bus service ended after Labor Day but will now run three times a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year. The shuttle costs $1, with a 50% discount for riders age 60 or over and people with disabilities. Supervisor Sheila Kuehl whose office funds the bus, said, “This bus is direct, convenient and affordable. $1 gets you from the Valley to the Santa Monica Pier and is great, not only for seniors but for everyone who loves the beach but doesn’t love to drive and pay to park!” Buses leave from the northwest corner of Owensmouth and Oxnard near Warner Center at 9:30 a.m., 12:15 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. each day. Return trips from the Santa Monica Pier are made at 10:45 a.m., 2 p.m. and 4:45 p.m. Additional stops are made along Topanga Canyon Boulevard and at Will Rogers Beach. A complete route map is available. Look for bus stops with the LA County Beach Bus sign. For more information call (888) 769-1122, press 2 at the prompt.

really are when you decide to run of office. Ask Phil Brock. He ran for City Council in 2014 and lost by a few hundred votes. He competed against Kevin McKeown, Terry O’Day and Sue Himmelrich, and Pam O’Connor. O’Connor nudged Brock into fifth place and out of the running thanks to last minute support from deep-pocketed developers who mounted a “do or die” campaign blitz. This time around, four council incumbents are vying for their second consecutive four year terms. Among the challengers is veteran school board member Oscar de la Torre, who desires to move up with this council bid. Armen Melkonians, founder of the slow-growth group Residocracy and coauthor of the highly controversial LV Measure on the November ballot has also tossed his hat into the council ring. Three of the four incumbents — Davis, Vazquez and Winterer — have been endorsed by the City’s most powerful political entity Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights (SMRR). As a note, six of the seven current council members have received SMRR’s endorsement which many feel is absolutely vital for an election victory. Before an election, there’s a lot of speculation about who is going to run and for what? This is real serious business because a person’s choice of office or running mate could mean the difference between winning and losing. Many local political observers were expecting that Terry O’Day wouldn’t run for office, this time around. O’Day’s pro-development voting reputation, along with those of Gleam Davis, would cost them both slowgrowth and Residocracy votes. Would it be enough to hurt their chances of being elected? Opinions varied. Renters comprise about two-thirds of the voters. They represent a large power block with their numerical advantage. Renters most often follow SMRR’s recommendations and vote for SMRR’s endorsee “team’ especially when casting votes for more minor political offices such as Rent Control Board, where candidates are mostly unknown. Other blocks of voters include Labor Union supporters and union members, voters who vote for Police and Fire interests and voters who support more housing — especially low-income housing. There are folks who support and vote for candidates that back environmental and conservative positions as well as so called neighborhood groups or “resident’ supporters. In the 2014 City Council race, local civic home town activist and Recreation and Parks Commissioner Phil Brock came within a few hundred votes of dethroning incumbent, Pam O’Connor. After the election, Brock maintained an active community profile – so much so that local political followers joked that Brock was campaigning for a 2016 City Council seat.
If all four incumbents were to run for council – Vazquez, O’Connor, Winterer and McKeown – it would be a tough quartet to beat. If O’Day or O’Connor were to drop out of the running, it would be more likely that Brock and/or another high-quality challenger- led team would do well. So, it was a surprise was that Brock decided suddenly to run for school board. Brock is much better known in the community, better liked and a more skillful politician than the three Santa Monica- Malibu Unified School District Board of Education (School Board) candidates. He would be a shoo-in for the board. Brock felt he could not win against four incumbents because he was not endorsed by SMRR, the unions or special interests. He reasoned that a seat on SMMUSD Board of Education would be easily winnable. He announced he wouldn’t run for council but would run for school board. It would make sense for Brock to run for school board. First of all, it’s a much easier race. School Board candidates. But there was a problem. Mayor Tony Vazquez’s wife Maria Leon-Vazquez was running for reelection. Normally, three of seven seats on the Board of Education would be available this year. Incumbents Maria Leon-Vazquez, Ralph Mechur and newcomer Jon Kean were the only candidates to file for the three seats. If Brock were to not seek a seat, and nobody else filed to run, the three candidates will be appointed to the board by default. However, it was not to be and once again cronyism and fate stood in the way of a progressive, common sense governing body from taking the reins at the SMMUSD. The horse trading began. My sources tell me the wheeling and dealing between power brokers and political cronies on behalf of Maria Leon-Vazquez was something to behold. In the end, a deal was struck. Brock would not run for Board of Education in return for an appointment to a two-year term on the Arts Commission. Although appointments to City Boards and commissions are not supposed to be politically driven, part of the deal was that Brock would receive support from behind the scenes heavyweight political power players if he decided to run for elected office in 2018. I guess that Brock could enter the election as a write-in candidate this election and still stay on the arts commission but I have a feeling that would really anger a lot of people. Besides, write-in candidates don’t usually do well in major elections. With Brock pursuing the arts, we lose the wisdom and common sense he would bring to either City Council or School Board. And, we’re stuck with the same old SMRR cronyism, social engineering, excessive spending and less good government than we need or deserve. Grim isn’t it? BILL can be reached at Mr.bilbau@gmail.com

longer, more intense, and more frequent.” They found that between 2004 and 2009, smoke waves affected 57 million Americans— more than 15 percent of the U.S. population. But even more troubling is their projection for that number to ramp up another 45 percent by mid-century as the planet continues to warm up. That will mean about 13 million more kids and seniors will be impacted by smoke waves compared with today. As the climate changes and most places get hotter and drier, forest fires are projected to increase significantly—and with more fire comes more smoke. Anyone living in fireprone areas needs to be informed and prepared. Sites like AirNow.gov can give current data on air quality and warn of any dangers from smoke waves or other forms of pollution. If a smoke wave is in your area, stay indoors or wear protective clothing and masking to avoid inhalation. Because smoke waves are a direct result of human-caused global warming, the best way to minimize them is to slow or stop carbon emissions. While slowing or stopping global warming is a global effort, individuals need to do their part too. Do what you can to minimize energy use and waste, upgrade to more efficient cars, appliances, systems, homes and offices, fly and drive less, walk and bike more... But also vote for carbon taxes and other warming mitigation measures and urge your lawmakers to support sustainability-oriented policy initiatives. If you live in a fire-prone area, you’ll be doing yourself and your loved ones a favor.

Smoke waves are just what they sound like: huge waves of smoke. Perhaps more dangerous than the fires themselves from which they radiate, smoke waves can cause health problems for people hundreds of miles around. Forest fire flames licking at homes and neighborhoods are always scary, killing dozens of people and causing billions of dollars in property damage across the U.S. every year. But it’s typically the risk from the smoke waves that causes school closures and confines people indoors for days or weeks on end while more frequent and more intense wildfires rage on. What makes smoke waves so dangerous is that they carry particulate matter (tiny dust particles smaller than 2.5 microns) that people can breathe into their lungs where they can cause respiratory problems and aggravate pre-existing medical conditions. Forest fires and other forms of combustion are the main source of these tiny dust particles—so the more forest fires, the more particulate matter risk. Asthmatic children are especially sensitive to smoke waves; hundreds were hospitalized in California this summer during one of the worst fire seasons on record. Smoke waves are most severe for those directly under or in the wave, but pollution can travel for hundreds of miles, poisoning the lungs of people nowhere near the actual fire. A recent study of smoke waves across the Western U.S. by researchers from Harvard and Yale universities concluded that climate changes “will likely cause smoke waves to be

cer patients were diagnosed between 1976 and 2012. That’s according to a report that was recently released by the Los Angeles Cancer Surveillance Program, a project of the USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Center and the university’s Keck School of Medicine. The incidence of lung cancer has “substantially declined” since the mid-1990s, according to the report, a trend that has been attributed in part to a decline in smoking. But lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer death in the U.S., data show, and survivor rates are extremely low. “Because cancer is such an important health problem and is costly in terms of treatment and social costs such as loss of work time and quality of life, it is important to have a clear idea of the changing burden of cancer on society,” the report reads. “Keeping an eye on cancer rates provides clues about the causes of cancer, how successful we are at preventing cancer, and where we should focus our efforts in the future to make cancer a disease of the past.” It will probably never be a disease of the past for Weitz, who over the last decade has had several operations and tried numerous treatments with varying degrees of success. Initially, doctors weren’t sure he had cancer. A chest X-ray was taken. A CAT scan was administered. But the bronchoscopy led to a diagnosis of adenocarcinoma in his chest, which necessitated a conversation with his three children. Weitz, who never smoked, then went through chemotherapy before an operation to remove his left lung. “My stamina got better, and my body accommodated having one lung,” he said, noting that he can’t run and that he occa-
sionally gets shortness of breath. “The body is incredibly adaptable.” Weitz was doing relatively well with a drug treatment until he started having difficulty reading a computer screen, and he started radiation therapy after an MRI confirmed his fear that cancer had spread into his brain. He later turned to a clinical trial for a drug that his mother learned about while watching a television news segment. The drug was reportedly successful for a patient with a specific mutation, which Weitz later learned he had. The drug worked for four and a half years. Weitz then started on another medicine that he’s taken for almost two and a half years, and he’s continued on the Alectinib regimen after undergoing a craniotomy last year to mitigate swelling in his brain. “For 50 years nothing really evolved,” he said of cancer treatment options. “Now there are so many new drugs. If you fail one, there’s another one. I feel badly for those who never had this opportunity. I’ve been incredibly fortunate. I thought it was a bad dream, but now [cancer is] not part of my daily routine.” Weitz now does outreach through the Lung Cancer Foundation of America, sharing his story with other patients. He urges them not to lose hope and reminds them, he said, that “no one has a crystal ball.” Weitz’s goal is to turn what seemed like a death sentence into a manageable chronic disease. He said he encourages fellow lung cancer patients not to be afraid of clinical trials for new treatments. “I don’t think I’ll ever be cured, but I don’t think I need to be cured,” he said. “We’re just on the precipice of amazing new discoveries. Immunotherapy, coupled with targeted therapies, can help, and no one can tell you how you’re going to do.” jeff@smdp.com

Crime Watch is culled from reports provided by the Santa Monica Police Department. These are arrests only. All parties are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
ON AUG. 24 AT ABOUT 12:56 P.M. Officers responded to a radio call for service at Bloomingdale’s, 315 Colorado Ave., regarding a theft that had just occurred. The suspect fled the location with merchandise. Officers determined the suspect entered the store and selected several items from the sales floor. The suspected exited the store without paying for the merchandise and ran southbound on 4th Street. Officers detained the suspect at Main Street and Olympic Boulevard. The store was desirous of prosecution. The suspect, Keron Howard, 32, of Monrovia, was placed under arrest without incident and booked for shoplifting. Bail was set at $500.

generally more secure than other varieties. However, thieves will exploit any opportunity and even locked bikes are stolen. SMPD said locking a bike in a well-lit and populated area is also helpful in preventing theft. Stratton actually followed all the advice when heading for the Broad Museum in Downtown Los Angeles. He left his bike at the bike racks near the downtown Expo station. He used a U-lock on the frame and an additional wire around the tires. “I was as happy as can be, then I come back and the bike is gone but the lock is there.” With the lock still secured around the rack, and apparently undamaged, Stratton said he was understandably upset. He sent a text to his family saying the day had been great, but it just got a lot worse. Stratton then walked to the nearby police station to report the theft. He praised the police for taking the report on a weekend, showing compassion and professionalism during his complaint but it was a small comment from an officer that stuck with Stratton. The officer mentioned that bikes stolen in Santa Monica are often taken to nearby Venice. “I walk the mile and a half home and I’m getting more and more mad but I’m thinking about what the guy said so I get on my other bike and I decide to look around,” said Stratton. “I go back to the train station and head right to the beach. I get onto the path in Santa Monica and I’m riding toward Venice and I see a guy on my bike riding toward me.” What Stratton did next is explicitly not recommended by police officers. He confronted the rider who claimed to have pur-

Little League, the fundamentals were very important. The big thing about me is, it’s not about the championships. Would kids come back and say how much they appreciate what I’ve done? That’s what drives me.” McPherson has kept busy since graduating from Samohi more than 60 years ago. After high school he served in the U.S. Army for three years, sustaining a knee injury that kept him from playing football at a city college. McPherson landed work in quality control for electronics, but he seized an opportunity to learn about painting when a previously arranged contractor failed to show up. That fateful scenario led to a long career for McPherson as a painting contractor, which took him from Mandeville Canyon to Manhattan Beach and beyond. And he has contributed his painting skills to beautification projects at Samohi. McPherson still lives near the intersection
chased the bike for $40 from someone in Venice. The bike was missing its basket but was otherwise undamaged. “I said, ‘OK you walk away and I’ll give you the $40.’ I ride it home and I’m talking to the family and I get home and I said ‘screw this, I’m going to find my basket.’” He returned to the path and within a few minutes he saw a woman staring at an apparently abandoned basket on the side of the path. It was his basket, complete with the straps. The woman said she saw a pair of men abandon it and Stratton was able to reattach it with no problems. Lieutenant Saul Rodriguez said the department is always happy when property is returned, but cautioned residents against direct confrontation. “If the owner/victim sees the bicycle, call SMPD or agency of jurisdiction. Do not confront, it may make matters worse,” he said. Rodriguez said it’s important for all bicycle owners to record and save their bicycle serial numbers. When a bike is stolen, prompt reporting is also important. “Report the loss to SMPD or agency of jurisdiction,” said Rodriguez. “It is common for owners to not report the loss or not save the serial number which makes it difficult to recover the bicycle or make an arrest.” Stratton said he was happy to recover his property and said there’s no reason to despair when property is stolen. “As soon as it happens, you go to look in the area, report it to the police and listen to what the police are saying,” he said. “Guys are just grabbing (bikes) and selling them right in the area so don’t give up. Not many people will take the time, most of us will sit and sulk.”

of 21st Street and Delaware Avenue, his home neighborhood since he was 12 years old. He still rides his bicycle. And he still offers private Little League lessons. He and his wife will celebrate 55 years of marriage next month, a milestone that might not have arrived without a little persistence on McPherson’s part. He remembered driving around town, seeing her on the street and pulling over to ask for her phone number, which she didn’t share. So he obtained her number through a church directory, got in touch and met her family before taking her out on a date. The rest, McPherson said, is history. McPherson’s legacy at the high school lives on through his progeny. His children and grandchildren, including a current sophomore, have also called Samohi their scholastic home base. He’ll be surrounded by loved ones and friends at this year’s Samohi alumni picnic. “My wife and I go every year,” he said. “It’s something I really look forward to.” jeff@smdp.com

Fill in the blank cells using numbers 1 to 9. Each number can appear only once in each row, column, and 3x3 block. Use logic and process of elimination to solve the puzzle. The difficulty level ranges from (easiest) to (hardest).
Matthew Hall matt@smdp.com
GETTING STARTED There are many strategies to solving Sudoku. One way to begin is to examine each 3x3 grid and figure out which numbers are missing. Then, based on the other numbers in the row and column of each blank cell, find which of the missing numbers will work. Eliminating numbers will eventually lead you to the answer.

■ Researchers have identified a genetic mutation unique to humans that allows our ancestors to adapt to smoke exposure. The mutation helps our bodies better tolerate the chemicals in smoke and process them in a way that minimizes harm. They suggest this mutation provided an evolutionary advantage over, say, Neanderthals, who would have suffered more from pollutants created by cooking fires. ■ The downside is that the mutation may also have made it easier for humans to take up the decidedly unhealthy habit of smoking.

Insurance Pays ■ Two new studies suggest that health insurance status -- that is, whether you have it and it provides sufficient coverage -- might play a role in your outcome if you develop cancer. In one study, researchers looked at the medical records of 10,211 testicular cancer patients diagnosed between 2007 and 2001. Men without insurance or with Medicaid were likely to have larger tumors and metastatic cancer at time of diagnosis. The other study of brain cancer patients found the same disparities: Uninsured and Medicaid patients had larger tumors and died earlier from glioblastomas than patients with insurance. ■ The disparities, the researchers suggest, might be due to delays in seeking treatment. Both studies are observational. They don’t prove cause and effect. But they are cause for pause.
Body of Knowledge ■ Your liver has at least 500 known functions.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Sept. 5)
By PETER GALLAGHER
Strange Brew
9
By JOHN DEERING
You’ll spend some of 2017 taking care of those who cannot take care of themselves. Because this role demands a loss of ego on your part, you could consider it a high calling. You will not be the same once your commitment has been fulfilled. Your spirit will be gorgeously shaped in love and selflessness. Leo and Capricorn adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 4, 38, 2, 33 and 1.
ARIES (March 21-April 19)
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23)
You’re only just now getting to know someone. This is a phase of the relationship to stretch out for as long as possible. Stretching it out will make for a better experience now and a good story later.
You need to feel a certain level of enthusiasm in order to move ahead with the action, both from you and the others involved. If it’s not there, you’ll take it as a sign to stay put -- a legitimate and wise reading of the situation.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20) Those who are reasonably sure that they are “good” don’t make goals around being good. That doesn’t, however, make them automatically good. Many aren’t self-aware. They don’t question their own behavior as you do.
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21)
GEMINI (May 21-June 21)
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21).
Every group has its own special language, history and culture. You may not know the ins and outs of this yet, but you know enough to respect that it exists and move with care around those ideas.
You’ve no need of social techniques or tricks. You’ve no need to employ any special social discipline. The reason you seem so interested in others is because you genuinely are.
Teaching what is known isn’t teaching; it’s preaching. Find out where the knowledge gaps are and you’ll quickly gain the rapt attention and respect of your audience.
Agnes
By TONY COCHRAN
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19). CANCER (June 22-July 22) Once you are absolutely clear about what others are expecting of you, you’ll find it easy to either deliver it or have the conversation that gets you out of the arrangement with relative grace.
You see the problem. Not everyone around you will be able to see it. Then there are those who will see it, and yet do not believe that it’s a problem at all. You have a lot of convincing to do before a solution is possible.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18).
When you’re feeling tough, the one who can calm you and give you a sense of security will be your most valued friend. Down deep, you don’t want to have to fight so hard for the things that should really be readily given.
Presence isn’t something you possess; it’s something you give off. You’ll radiate an energy today that makes people feel good about themselves, and the side effect is that they’ll feel good about you.
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20).
Every relationship has a status quo. You’ve changed, and the basic nature of your relationships must change, too. The norms that used to be fine with you are no longer satisfactory.
A good teacher erases the board, clearing the last lesson before moving on to the next one. Otherwise, there’s a distraction hanging in the air that is mighty difficult to overcome.

Forgiveness and the Scorpio Moon
By MICK & MASON MASTROIANNI & JOHNNY HART
By JOHN DEERING & JOHN NEWCOMBE
Forgiveness allows for the cutting of emotional ties to the thing that went wrong so there is no need to spend any more time or energy on the issue. As for the “forgetting” part, that would be unwise. The protective Scorpio moon suggests that you keep your notes on the matter, so as not to be vulnerable to the same sorts of drama in the future.
