Buy Local, Give Local on Ocean Park supports Health Center BY MATTHEW HALL Daily Press Editor
Buy Local, Give Local returns to Santa Monica Sept. 12 - 20 to maximize support for local charities. Santa Monica’s Buy Local program encourages residents to keep their purchases within the city and with locally focused merchants. The Buy Local, Give Local program takes the philosophy a step further by asking local merchants to help support a charity of their choice. Along Ocean Park Boulevard, the merchants are backing the Westside Family Health Center. The organization, founded in 1974, is a non-profit community health center providing a wide range of low-cost health care services. WFHC serves close to 10,000 low-income and uninsured women, men and children, regardless of one’s ability to pay. Participating businesses said WFHC was a deserving choice. “It’s important the WFHC be recognized for all they do to keep our community
healthy and united. That’s what makes Santa Monica special; and Kimba is very Santa Monica,” said former world figure skater & current managing director of rumba/Kimba Hills Design, Adam E. Schmidt. LaFayette James, the store supervisor of Bob’s Market, said the store supports numerous, local non-profits through donations, food and scripps, including Westside Family Health Center, Samohi, the Church of Ocean Park, John Adams Middle School, Santa Monica Little League, Mt. Olive Lutheran Preschool, the Santa Monica Synagogue, Circle of Friends, the YWCA of Santa Monica and Grant Elementary School. “We like to support the community, because they support us,” James said. “We are an anchor for the community in Ocean Park and the owner of Bob’s Market has always believed in giving back. We are community-based and there is growth in supporting local.” Maire Byrne owner of Thyme Café and Market kicked off fundraising with

Where does old SMMUSD equipment go? OUTDATED HARDWARE TO BE SOLD, DONATED OR RECYCLED
BY JEFFREY I. GOODMAN Daily Press Staff Writer
With the help of millions of dollars in bond money, the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified school district is in the process of renovating its campuses and upgrading its classrooms with new technological equipment. So where does all of the old stuff go? That question was answered in part by the Board of Education during its meeting Wednesday night, when it reviewed a long list of equipment that the district intends to sell, recycle, donate or throw away. The school board typically approves similar measures a couple times each year, district
spokeswoman Gail Pinsker said. “All items are obsolete, beyond economic repair, unusable or deemed as surplus,” according to the district report. Money from equipment sales must be placed in the fund from which the money originally came, or in the district’s general or reserve funds, according to state education code. The district must also give public notice, according to the education code. “There shall be no sale until notice has been given by posting in at least three public places in the district for not less than two weeks, or by publication for at least once a week for a period of not less than two weeks in a newspaper published in the district and having a general circulation there,” a statute reads. The district’s current equipment list includes
a dozen smartboards at Juan Cabrillo Elementary School that the district acquired in 2011, according to the report. The Malibu campus is also getting rid of nine television sets, most of which were acquired in the early 1990s. John Muir Elementary School is shedding 14 Apple iBook computers and 22 other Apple computers, most of which are about 10 years old. A smartboard and a projector screen have also been deemed outdated. At Point Dume Elementary School, there are 11 smartboards from 2006 that are no longer in use. There are also 12 television sets and four VCRs slated for removal. Webster Elementary School is shedding 17 smartboards and 17 televisions, including one

Rare costume and stage designs from banned Soviet theatrical production on display The Santa Monica College Emeritus Art Gallery will present an exhibition of rare costume and stage designs created by Katya Kompaneyets with Georgian artist and political satirist Tengiz Mirzashvili for legendary Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky’s theatrical production of Hamlet. The exhibition will run Sept. 17 - Nov. 4 at the gallery, located on the first floor of Emeritus College, 1227 Second St., in downtown Santa Monica. The opening reception is from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17. Gallery hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The exhibit and reception are free. For information, please call (310) 434-4306. Hamlet was the only theatrical play produced by Tarkovsky, a brilliant filmmaker considered a political dissident. Performances by the Theater of Leninsky Komsomol opened in spring 1977. Shortly after, they were banned. The costumes were not designed to be historically accurate. According to Kompaneyets, they were based on familiar figures - including politicians and actors - and on favorite paintings. “Hamlet’s costume design and hat were based on a Hans Holbein portrait,” she said, noting that costumes for undertakers reflected works by Hieronymus Bosch. “The ringed armor for the ghost of father-king I made myself, weaving it from ropes. The armor had a very ghostly look. We also worked on a color scheme, always thinking of how costumes will look together on a stage. We wanted a stage to look like a painting.” Most of the sketches for the costume and stage designs - and the actual costumes have been destroyed, and none of the performances were filmed, so Kompaneyets’ sketches offer a rare glimpse into a moment in history.

Long time resident starts animal rescue group
Free Consultation
EZ Heart & Soul Animal Rescue & Sanctuary, a recently formed non-profit 501c3 in Santa Monica, welcomes the Santa Monica community to visit their website to help spread the word about their adoptable dogs, and encourage donations and sponsorship opportunities to help enable them to continue to save the lives of dogs. EZ Heart & Soul Rescue & Sanctuary was founded by Estela Zuniga, a long-time resident and animal owner in Santa Monica, and a very dedicated a volunteer at the Santa Monica Animal Shelter. With a tenure at the shelter that began in 2010 that includes thousands of logged volunteer hours, her efforts led to the rescue of at least 30 dogs, and the direct adoption of countless others. Through these experiences, she saw that limited resources in city shelters quickly increased the chances of euthanasia in dogs, despite these dogs having the potential for adoption if given the appropriate resources. In response to this, in 2012, Estela formed EZ Heart & Soul Rescue & Sanctuary. Their facility in Acton, CA became available to accommodate rescue dogs in late 2014. Their newly launched website offers comprehensive information on their rescue, location, their roster of dogs, and ways in which the community can become involved in their mission to rescue and advocate for dogs. For more information about the rescue, and to become involved, please visit EZ Heart & Soul Rescue & Sanctuary on their website www.ezheartandsoulrescue.com.

Something rotten smells in City Hall HOW ABOUT THE SORRY SPECTACLE OF
councilmember Pam O’Connor’s role in the illegal firing last year of a newly hired Elizabeth Riel as the head of City Hall’s communications and public relations? Almost as soon as she was hired, Riel was discharged by then City Manager Rod Gould. Word quickly circulated that then Mayor O’Connor had demanded the action because Riel had supported her chief political rival Kevin McKeown and contributed financially to a 2006 Santa Monica Coalition for a Livable City (SMCLC) antiO’Connor campaign flyer. Riel in turn sued City Hall (and Gould) claiming her First Amendment rights and her employment contract were violated. Riel settled with the city for $710,000. This cost taxpayers about one million dollars, including outside counsel and other expenses. SMCLC obtained documents that reveal an intense campaign by O’Connor to force Riel’s firing. An email exchange from May 22 to May 24, 2014 among O’Connor, Gould and other senior staff is particularly revealing. They’re available on www.smclc.net. The emails show an increasingly agitated O’Connor cranking up the pressure to dismiss Riel and Gould resisting by telling her that they “made the right choice.” He urged her to give Riel “a chance to prove herself.” He also told McKeown he had no problem with Riel supporting him in his 2006 election run. Over 36 hours, O’Connor escalated her threats. “I do not and will not trust her. I will not work with her … She attacked me directly by putting money into a hit piece … She is a supporter of Kevin.” Remember, the 2014 election was six months away and O’Connor was planning to run, again. The attacks continued. “This is the best practice of City a Mangers!!! (sic) Hire people who are political enemies of people elected to your Council?”
In another email: “… I am being attacked from both outside City Hall and from within City Hall.” O’Connor threatened to go to the press and rally opposition to Riel “being in this position.” Gould was becoming unnerved at this point. He responded, “You are not under attack from City Hall. We all view you with the greatest respect and admiration…” An exasperated Gould even offered to resign. Instead, after being advised by city attorney Marcia Moutrie, former deputy city manager Kate Vernez and assistant city manager Elaine Polachek, he buckled under and informed O’Connor he was “moving toward a decision to retract the job offer.” Gould then fired Riel days before she was to begin work. SMCLC’s chair, Diana Gordon states, “Under our City Charter form of government, no matter how much a councilmember disagrees with a city manager, they cannot cross the inviolate line that gives the city manager exclusive, sole power in hiring and firing decisions...” SMCLC has asked City Hall to determine whether O’Connor’s actions resulted in the firing of Elizabeth Riel by the City Manager in violation of Section 610 of the City Charter and, if so, to initiate appropriate legal action. That section says, “Neither the City Council nor any of its members shall order or request directly or indirectly the appointment of any person to an office or employment or the removal of any person therefrom, by the City Manager, or by any of the department heads in the administrative service of the City.” SMCLC also asked City Council to independently conduct a full, public review into all the facts surrounding Ms. Riel’s firing and to make appropriate findings as to both O’Connor’s and senior staff ’s role. It also asked City Hall to establish procedures to prevent future political interference hiring and firing decisions for city employees. There are other huge issues arising from O’Connor’s actions. It appears that O’Connor
violated charter section 610 with the assistance of other individuals. Emails reveal troublesome exchanges between Gould, Vernez and Polachek and references to advice from Moutrie. The big question is whether they all conspired to deny Riel her rights and also violate the City Charter. Did outside counsel Terry Bird (who represented both the city and Gould) together with Moutrie, intentionally fail to disclose actions by O’Connor, Gould, Moutrie, Vernez and Polacheck that could have led to a claim for reimbursement of the city’s million dollar payout? Mayor McKeown confirmed that council would review the matter. That’s not enough. I suggest that the council approve a full-scale investigation of the firing incident by an independent law firm or neutral investigative agency. Disciplinary action against current staff, a lawsuit to recover the million dollars, ethics referrals and section 610 criminal sanctions must all be on the table. There is a growing call for O’Connor to resign or be recalled. She’ll never resign. In fact, she’s already claiming that this whole magilla is “politically motivated.” A recall is a difficult undertaking. With the political clout of her allies and financial resources of the hotel and developer interest that’ve staked her for more than two decades, she’d probably prevail, anyway. I predict nothing will come of any of this. The most effective plan is to isolate her. Next year, two of O’Connor’s pro-development colleagues Terry O’Day and Gleam Davis are up for reelection. If they’re unseated and replaced by two good honest, slow-growth candidates, O’Connor will be marginalized - alone and powerless. She’ll still do the bidding for her developer, hotel and special interest friends until 2018 when her term expires and she’s voted out of office. But, her vote won’t matter. We win! Labor Day is supposed to be a national holiday. Why are so many people who work and do the real labor expected to work that day? Stores are open and advertising their “Labor Day Sales”. Who keeps these stores in business? The low-wage workers, of course!! The management personnel allow themselves to take the holiday off, while the workers (without whom the businesses couldn’t thrive) have to work hard to accommodate the shoppers! Please, honor the workers who keep the gas stations, the grocery stores, the ice cream parlors, the retail shops open on what should be a holiday for all!! Business owners: If you feel you have to stay open on Labor Day, please pay your workers double pay. Shoppers: Please tip generously and sincerely say “Thank you! for your ongoing hard work!”

fundraiser night for Westside Family Health Center last week. “When I came and toured the clinic, I was blown away. People filled the waiting room and their doctors really do so much there,” she said. “Giving back to the community, creates a community,” Byrne said. “I feel lucky to be in business in Santa Monica and I want to pay it forward.” Bruce Bair from Santa Monica Yoga said his philosophy about supporting local charities is if they are going to support something, it might as well be local. That philosophy extends to buying local, too. He enjoys helping local Santa Monica businesses, because he is one. “Many of the products we sell are from local companies, including clothing from Hard Tail, Allen Allen and Onzie; yoga mats from Manduka and YogaRat; and a local supplier for bolsters and cushions. I also get flowers every week from the Wednesday farmer’s market to put in our window,” he said. “I enjoy supporting local non-profits like Westside Family Health Center, because they are my neighbor and they promote the health of the community. Yoga is very much connected to people’s health because it helps reduce the stress in their lives, and that is important to me. I enjoy being able to connect people who want to help, such as my Santa Monica Yoga customers to opportunities to give back to those who need it most.” Shaka Shack is also supporting the event. Owners Michael Anapol and Kathie Gibboney said the business participates out of a sense of personal responsibility. “I’m a giving person, and my wife is even more generous than I am,” Anapol said. “This is a family business and we try to run it that way.” Anapol said he tries to give his business to other local businesses. “I try to go to a different, local coffee shop every afternoon, so I can spread my business around Santa Monica,” Anapol said. Participating Ocean Park businesses include: ø ARTFUL - 1726 Ocean Park Blvd. Artful will have sale tables set up outside the store each day of the Buy Local Week and will donate 10 percent of sale proceeds.

ON AUGUST 29 AT APPROXIMATELY 6:50 A.M. A Santa Monica police officer was traveling westbound at the 1200 block of California Ave. and saw in the eastbound lane a driver talking on his cellphone. The officer immediately made a U-turn and stopped the driver for the vehicle code violation, then discovered he did not have a valid driver’s license either. The driver was then transported to the Santa Monica jail so his identity could be verified and later released with a citation. Didier Paolo Ortiz-Rodriguez, 32, of Los Angeles had bail set at $100.

member Jordan Wilimovsky and Michael Phelps are among the nominees for the Team USA award for the best male athlete for the month of August. The nomination adds to an already impressive year for Wilimovsky, who has earned a spot in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The 21-year-old Malibu High School alumnus has elite company in his category for the Team USA Awards, which the U.S. Olympic Committee organizes to recognize the outstanding achievements of American athletes. Voting ends Sept. 7, according to a
press release. Wilimovsky secured his Olympic bid by claiming first place in the men’s 10-kilometer open-water race at the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia. He completed the course in 1 hour 49 minutes and 48.2 seconds, finishing about 12 seconds ahead of Dutch runner-up Ferry Weertman, and became the first American since 2005 to win gold in the event at the elite international competition. He also captured top honors in the 10k race at the USA Swimming Open Water National Championships in April. Wilimovsky is taking a year off from Northwestern University to prepare for the Olympics in Brazil. He plans to train extensively with Team Santa Monica coach Dave
from 1992. The site’s also list three DVD players, according to the report.
The district is also paying out $288,650 to Ontario-based Sigmanet for wireless installation and more than $118,000 to Long Beach-based NRC Environmental Services for Malibu High School lighting equipment.
FACILITY UPGRADES
TURF’S UP
On Wednesday the school board approved more than $2.7 million in facility improvements as bond measures continue supporting infrastructural and technological upgrades throughout the district. The latest consent calendar includes more than $912,000 to Riverside-based California Construction for project management, more than $652,000 to Bakersfield-based IVS Computer Technology for classroom improvements and more than $559,000 to Meridian IT for tech services.
The district is replacing black rubber matting with artificial turf in the preschool playground area at Washington West Preschool. Santa Ana-based KYA Services will receive the $52,000 contract for the surfacing project at the Fourth Street childcare facility. The turf is cooler in temperature and easier to maintain than the rubber, according to a district report.

Kelsheimer at Santa Monica Swim Center. Like it will probably be in the 2016 Games, his competition in the Team USA Awards is fierce. Phelps, who has won 18 Olympic gold medals in his career, posted three world-leading times at the national championships. He also received the high-point award. Three other standout athletes are also up for the Team USA honor. Track phenom Ashton Eaton bested his own world record in the decathlon to win gold with 9,045 points at the world championships. U.S. diver David Boudia, who earned second place at the FINA World Championships, became the first American diver in nearly 30 years to earn three consec-

utive world-championship medals in the 10meter event. Paralympic track and field star Jarryd Wallace set a world record and seized the men’s 100-meter gold medal with a time of 10.71 seconds at the Parapan Am Games, improving the previous record by four-hundredths of a second. The five athletes nominated for Team USA’s female athlete of the month are Allyson Felix (track and field), Ashleigh Johnson (water polo), Katie Ledecky (swimming), Sarah True (triathlon) and Jill Walsh (Paralympic cycling). Sudoku Fill in the blank cells using numbers 1 to 9. Each number can appear only once in each row, column, and 3x3 block. Use logic and process of elimination to solve the puzzle. The difficulty level ranges from (easiest) to (hardest).
GETTING STARTED There are many strategies to solving Sudoku. One way to begin is to examine each 3x3 grid and figure out which numbers are missing. Then, based on the other numbers in the row and column of each blank cell, find which of the missing numbers will work. Eliminating numbers will eventually lead you to the answer. ■ Muslim clerics complain of the commercialization of the holy city of Mecca during the annual hajj pilgrimages, but for Pope Francis’ visits to New York, Washington, D.C., and Philadelphia in mid-September, shameless street vendors and entrepreneurs already appear to be eclipsing Mecca’s experience. Merchants said they’d be selling, among other tacky items, mozzarella cheese statuettes of the pope ($20), a “pope toaster” to burnish Francis’ image on bread, a Philly-themed bobblehead associating the pope with the movie boxer Rocky, local beers Papal Pleasure and YOPO (You Only Pope Once) and T-shirts (“Yo Pontiff!” and “The Pope Is My Homeboy”). The Wall Street Journal quoted a Philadelphia archdiocese spokesman admitting that

“you kind of have to take it in stride.” ■ In May, suspect David Riffle, charged with trespassing (after shouting “religious proverbs” at patrons of the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida), greeted Broward County judge John “Jay” Hurley at his bail hearing by inquiring, “How you doin’, a--hole?” Unfazed, Hurley responded, “I’m doing fine. How are you, sir?” After listening to Riffle on religion a bit longer, Hurley set bond at $100. In August, talking to Judge Hurley from jail via closed circuit TV, arrestee Susan Surrette, 54, “flashed” him as she tried to prove an alleged recent assault. The self-described “escort” and “porn star” (“Kayla Kupcakes”) had lifted her shirt to reveal bruises. (Her bond, also, was $100.)

Have peace your way (with ketchup) by Mikey Tittinger
Taking vigorous action to bring about social change, or activism, comes in all shapes and sizes. Sometimes it comes wrapped in a foldable, food-grade paper burger box. Despite getting a big, greasy fat rejection from its rival with the golden arches, Burger King is pressing on
with an attempt to create a showpiece burger in harmony with other fastfood joints. All in the name of peace. The King needs its fellow jesters to help create (and market) the Peace Burger, a one-day Frankenstein merger of meat patties to honor the United Nations’ International Day of Peace (Sept. 21).

They’re spreading peace like they slather Whopper sauce. It’s a brilliant public relations move. McDonald’s needs Burger King like Kanye needs a trombone player. Mickey D’s already dominates the effort to hook us on quasi-meat food, but now they look like they hate healthy people and peace. It would be one thing if proceeds from Peace Burger were going to humanitarian efforts. At least we could feel good about something while our stomach enzymes try to break down whatever we just ate. Burger King claims it’s promoting the nonprofit Peace One Day, but they’re really making their own ends meet.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)
★★★★ Emphasis is on family and perhaps the last hurrah of summer. A conversation with a loved one could become difficult and evolve into a much more contentious situation. An argument interference from a third party will make a resolution possible. Tonight: Opt for togetherness.
★★★★ You might feel as if someone is out of control. You have several choices to make, and one of them could be to sever the bond -- at least for now. Another would be to find out what is going on with this person. Understand the ramifications involved. Tonight: Do your thing.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) GEMINI (May 21-June 20) ★★★★ Your ability to get past an immediate hassle proves to be effective, as you see others get stuck in the muck. Move in a new direction, but use caution with a partner who might not see eye to eye with you. Others might not want to follow in your footsteps. Tonight: All smiles.
★★★★ Your effectiveness blends well with a partner’s intuitive knowledge. You often have differing opinions, but don’t dismiss any of his or her thoughts right now. This person’s ideas remain instrumental to your ability to breeze past hassles. Tonight: Touch base with a friend.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) CANCER (June 21-July 22) ★★★★ You have a fiery side to your personality that emerges every so often, and now is one of those times. Understand that you have the ability to stand up to others. Perhaps you need to support yourself more in saying “no,” before your temper flares. Tonight: Be spontaneous.

As a result, you’ll see life from a new perspective. Understand others’ needs, but don’t feel responsible to fulfill them at this point. Tonight: Not to be found.
★★★★ Remain nurturing and caring despite a temporary snafu. Losing your temper or being erratic at this point will not bode well. You’ll want to avoid a confrontation at all costs. You need to understand your limits, but also let others understand theirs. Tonight: Make it early.
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) ★★★★ You’ll want to deal on a one-on-one level with a partner who keeps shaking up the status quo. You might be tired of this perpetual upheaval. Listen to others’ opinions. How you see a situation evolve could depend on your integration of different ideas. Tonight: Near the action.

★★★★ You could be in a situation where you’ll want to let someone else take the lead. You are not a sign that enjoys confrontation. Understand that others can be more suited and less emotional about the same matter. Let them run the show. Tonight: Lighten up the moment. JACQUELINE BIGAR’S STARS The stars show the kind of day you’ll have: ★★★★★Dynamic ★★ So-So ★★★★ Positive ★ Difficult ★★★ Average
This year you have the ability to make new friends, and you seem to enjoy a difference of opinion more than you have in the past. You are secure enough to understand where others are coming from. If you are single, you could be taken aback by everything that is occurring in your social life. Somewhere in this whirlwind of activity lies someone who could be quite significant to your future. If you are attached, the two of you open up to a broader circle of friends. You enjoy socializing even more together than in the past. CANCER is as emotional as you are intellectual.
