Wellbeing index issues second set of findings LEA YAMASHIO & MATTHEW HALL Daily Press Staff

City Hall has released the second draft of the City’s Wellbeing Index and the results are similar to the inaugural findings: life in Santa Monica is pretty good but there are still areas to be improved. The index measures six dimensions, Outlook (tracking social media commentary on life), Community (how residents involve themselves

in local issues), Place and Planet (feelings on open space, buildings and social environment), Learning (academic and life experience), Health (how healthy people feel and the resources available to help them) and Economic Opportunity (the ability of residents to improve their economic situation). The first-in-the-nation index is a result of a $1 million prize from Bloomberg Philanthropies Mayors Challenge. The project launched in 2015 and this year’s data expands on the original results. More than 3,800 resi-

dents responded to surveys, double the initial intake. In the Outlook category, locals reported a satisfaction rating of 7.4 out of 10. This is above the national average of 6.9. Two-thirds said they are happy most of the time and 74 percent were optimistic about the future. 30 percent of residents 25-34 years old said they didn’t have enough time to enjoy themselves, a concern shared amongst all age groups to some degree. Grant Elementary celebrates diversity MARINA ANDALON Daily Press Staff Writer

At the Santa Monica – Malibu Unified School District, Board of Education meeting on September 13 the Board recognized National Hispanic/ Latino Heritage Month. Hispanic Heritage Month is an official celebration of American citizens whose ancestry can be tracked back to Spain, Mexico, Central and South America. Officially, National Hispanic/ Latino Heritage Month is recognized from September 15 through October 15. Last month, Superintendent Dr. Ben Drati presented his threeprong approach and within that he requested teachers incorporate social justice and diversity within their lesson plans. Grant Elementary Literacy Coach Rachel Mock, and 4th and 5th grade teacher Tara Warren did just that. Grant Elementary staff wanted to not only celebrate student thinking but also wanted to have students examine diversity and social justice through the lesson plans. They support the constant contribution to the district that is made from the Hispanic/Latino community and wanted to show their gratitude. Mock explained, over the past three weeks, 30 students have learned about different Hispanic leaders. “The students learned and observed how to read and understand complex text through two different lenses. Fourth graders looked through the lens of change generates additional change,” said Mock. “While the fifth graders look through the lens of power has the

Namaste Award Recognizes Those Who Serve Others Yoga Gives Back (YGB) has announced that eight-time Grammy Award Winner Alanis Morissette will be the recipient of YGB’s prestigious 2017 Namaste Award. The Namaste Award ceremony will take place at YGB’s 10th Anniversary “Thank You Mother India” Fundraiser on Sept. 24, 2017 in Santa Monica. The fundraiser is a joyous event where over 200 members of the Southern California yoga community and beyond come together to express gratitude to “Mother India” for the gift of yoga. Alanis practices meditation and yoga, and is an avid outspoken supporter and advocate for multiple charities. “I’m thrilled to present the 2017 Namaste Award to Alanis Morissette, whose passion for human spirituality, health, and well-being led to the creation of a popular Podcast on the subjects that help to showcase the spirituality of every human condition, from every walk of life,” says YGB Founder Kayoko Mitsumatsu. She explains, “While many perceive yoga primarily as a physical exercise, the goal of the practice of yoga is to unite with the Divine Self. ‘Namaste,’ which in Sanskrit means ‘the divinity in me salutes the divinity in you,’ symbolizes Yoga Gives Back’s mission, which is to turn our gratitude to empowering others. “The Namaste Award recognizes special people who have gone beyond the practice and teaching of yoga to incorporate noble humanitarian service, which helps make the world a better place,” Mitsumatsu continues, “and we believe Alanis Morissette exemplifies this through her acts of kindness and her desire to help bring people together.” The Thank You Mother India fundraiser will take place at the newly renovated YogaGlo Studio in Santa Monica, California at 5 p.m. Following a welcome reception, there will be a seated dinner featuring the Namaste Award ceremony, a short YGB FILMS presentation, silent and live auctions, raffle, and live entertainment. Each event attendee will receive a generous gift bag from the event sponsors. This fundraiser serves as the launch for YGB’s annual five-month, THANK YOU MOTHER INDIA global fundraising campaign. From September 2017 through January 2018, more than 150 YGB events will take place in over 18 countries heightening awareness of the realities faced by the poor, especially women and children, in India. “While the 20162017 global campaign raised over $125,000 (USD), this year’s goal is to raise over $150,000,” says Mitsumatsu. Yoga studios and communities will again host special yoga classes or fundraisers whose proceeds will benefit YGB’s programs. Mitsumatsu founded Yoga Gives Back because she was deeply moved by the degree of poverty experienced by people in India, where yoga was born. “While benefitting so much from regular yoga practice and teachings, it hit me hard that 75% of India’s population still lives on under $2.00 a day,” she says. “It became very clear that if everyone worldwide who appreciates yoga contributes even the cost of one yoga class to help those less fortunate, we can effect real change in the birthplace of yoga.” The 2017 YGB Host Committee includes many prestigious members of the yoga community: Seane Corn, Tara Guber, Mandy Ingber, Gurmukh Kaur Khalsa, Derik and Lisa Mills, Lauren Peterson, Shiva Rae, Felicia Tomasko, Koji and Sakurako Toyoda. ability to influence.” Both classes read the same biographies but were collecting different data. The objective was that the students would read and learn about social justice, diversity and the struggles and obstacles many Hispanic figures faced. The lens was meant to help students determine what evidence was relevant to share with the BOE. “Not only did the students master the objective and standards, they taught us a thing or two about these figures,” said Mock.

Eight students attended the meeting and presented the Board with a brief presentation about their specific Hispanic figure. Students researched and presented information about figures like Ellen Ochoa, first Hispanic woman to ever go into space, Roberto Clemente, baseball player and humanitarian as well as Cesar Chavez, Frida Kahlo and many more. Throughout each presentation the Board seemed to be very impressed with the students and the lesson plan. The teachers were also acknowledged for being creative with the lesson plan and for celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. marina@smdp.com

WELLBEING FROM PAGE 1

Under the Community dimension, locals were very happy with their neighborhoods reporting high levels of trust in their neighbors, confidence in remaining in their neighborhoods and good ability to talk to neighbors. However only one third said they felt they had influence in citywide decisions. In talking about Place and Planet, half of respondents asked for more community gardens. Residents of color were less likely to be happy with their housing situation and 60 percent of all respondents make use of parks and libraries a few times a month or less. There were significant differences in the Learning category based on racial classification. In measuring college readiness Whites scored 85 percent, Hispanics/Latinos 72 percent, Blacks 52 percent, Asian 95 percent and Multi-Racial 82 percent. Locals were generally healthier than the national average but 40 percent do not get enough physical exercise and only 20 percent eat enough fruits/vegetables. One third of 11th graders reported some kind of sadness but 88 percent reported access to a caring adult relationship. While the median household income is about 50 percent higher than the county average, about half of respondents reported spending more than 30 percent of income on housing and a quarter said they worry about paying for housing. Councilwoman Gleam Davis said the work is about more than just happiness. “It’s about people waking up every morning and feeling connected to their community,” she said. “If there is either a personal or community crisis, it’s about being able to deal with it and also to bounce back from it. It’s also about giving improved meaning to people’s lives, so that they feel not just that they are existing from day to day, but that every day they are part of a larger community and part of a larger movement.” Davis said the results are becoming increasingly influential in the city’s political decision making. “Now that we’re starting to collect more meaningful and broader-based data, it’s much easier for us then to evaluate, what are we doing as a community doing to improve our resiliency SEE INDEX PAGE 7

and our wellbeing,” she said. “It’s not just a question of, ‘what is the city council doing?’ although that’s obviously very important; we need to fund programs and fund for the continuous collection of data and have programs based on the data. But by using it then we can also have people in the community contribute, because if we are really going to be a healthy and resilient community, it can’t just be a top-down operation where the city dictates everything. We have to get our local partners, our local businesses, our residents, even the people who are visiting here for a day or two to be part of that entire well-being effort.” The 2017 data release included a new video partnership with Kaiser Permanente. Yesenia Monsour, Public Affairs Director Kaiser Permanente, said the short videos are a perfect fit for the world of social media and will hopefully help spread information about the project. “I think for Kaiser Permanente, it’s very important to try and make a difference in the community,” she said. “So for us, this Wellbeing Index and the Wellbeing effort was a perfect match for us, because we know that you can go see your doctor, but that’s once a year, twice a year, but if you are living a life of wellbeing, that is going to have the greatest possible impact on your health. If we can help Santa Monicans be more healthy, focus on getting a great job, and be able to do the things that bring joy to their lives, that’s really going to make an impact.” Santa Monica City Manager Rick Cole said the project is about looking at results. “Traditionally, government at the local level is organized around services, and those are important, but the really crucial question is: what are the services really producing? What are the results? The Wellbeing Index is really a groundbreaking effort to try to assess what impact not only government is having, but all of our community efforts to improve the quality of life,” he said. TODAY’S BIRTHDAY (Sept. 18)

By PETER GALLAGHER

Strange Brew

By JOHN DEERING

From the top of the solar return, you’ll do as one Puerto Rican proverb suggests and “break the leg of a bad habit.” This will allow you to work faster, more smoothly and with more lucrative results. Your family gets bigger in October. November lights the passion fire. You’ll travel for love in November and August. Cancer and Taurus adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 2, 18, 30, 17 and 39.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23)

You won’t get any more than you can handle. Still, it would be nicer if the word “pleasantly” were inserted between “can” and “handle,” yes? The way to add a little ease in your life is to say “no” a lot more than you currently do.

Today’s act of bravery won’t take place on a battlefield; rather, it will happen inside your heart when you decide to be compassionate even though you’ve plenty of reasons not to be.

SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21) TAURUS (April 20-May 20) These days, people claim to do things “in the interest of transparency” as if it’s some kind of brag. But how much do you really want to know? You’ll prefer a well-crafted story with a little mystery thrown in.

When the energy bleeds out of the situation and you realize that the old way cannot go on, let this be your reinvention mantra: The phoenix wasn’t born from an egg. Its mother was fire; its father was death himself.

Agnes

By TONY COCHRAN

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21) GEMINI (May 21-June 21) The quiet observer may see the most, but there’s also something to be said for the outspoken instigator who teases out a side of people that’s been dying for the excuse to emerge.

Everything interesting has something slightly controversial tucked in its pocket. When things cease to be somewhat complex or subversive, they cease to get attention.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19) CANCER (June 22-July 22) You’ll be pressured into liking what’s popular. That’s OK. Popularity may be as good a reason for liking something as any in that moment. Later tonight, though, have a you-to-you talk to figure out your true preferences.

From barbershop quartets to habanero peppers, one man’s torture is another man’s pleasure. You’ll do your best work in a diverse group. You won’t concern yourself too much with judging other people’s proclivities.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18) LEO (July 23-Aug. 22) There are those who feel bullied by a loud voice, even when that voice isn’t using bullying words. You’re a socially savvy performer, though, so you’ll dial in your volume and tone to match the vibes of your audience.

Dogs of C-Kennel

By MICK & MASON MASTROIANNI & JOHNNY HART

Compromise gets a bad rap in the current culture of “dream big” and “don’t settle,” but think twice today before you pass up a good, solid arrangement in which both parties would be moderately satisfied.

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You’re bringing your A-game. Each person you meet today has the potential to be, at the very least, a friendly part of your social landscape. Some could even become special to you.

You look forward and wonder whether you’ll have a future that looks like today multiplied many times. If this were to be the case, what would you change about today to make it work?

Zack Hill

By JOHN DEERING & JOHN NEWCOMBE

Virgo Moon Poses a Question Under the diligent Virgo moon, should you let them know how hard you’ve had to work to make something happen, or should you make it look like no sweat at all? It depends on who is on the receiving end. Inexperienced people need to be taught what goes into the process. Seasoned people appreciate a pro job with an attitude to match.

Curtain Calls ■ “Can you get a shot of this gun?” ■ --Harry Collinson, chief planning officer for the Derwentside District Council in England. On June 20, 1991, Collinson was supervising the demolition of an illegal structure built by Albert Dryden. A BBC camera crew accompanied Collinson to film the demolition. Dryden produced an unlicensed handgun. Collinson asked the BBC crew to film it. Dryden then fatally shot Collinson, and wounded a BBC reporter and policeman. He was subsequently convicted of murder and sentenced to life.
