SMC developing courses for bachelor’s program Tech industry reps reviewing interaction design curriculum BY JEFFREY I. GOODMAN Daily Press Staff Writer
Earlier this month, representatives from tech firms in and around Silicon Beach convened for the second time to weigh in on the classes that will shape Santa Monica College’s four-year program in interaction design. The advisory board’s input is one facet of a process that will yield a landmark opportunity at the local community college, which views the bachelor’s degree as a way to prepare students for in-demand jobs in the
growing field of digital user experience. Officials are making tweaks to the drafted curriculum and developing application materials for the IxD program, which they hope to have up and running by next fall. The new upper-division classes will complement the existing coursework that comprises the school’s associate’s degree in graphic design. “I’m really excited by how well the team is working and by the excitement we have from other departments outside of the graphic design program,” said Jennifer Merlic, SMC SEE DESIGN PAGE 5
More bus stop upgrades heading for council approval BY MATTHEW HALL Daily Press Editor
The City Council will consider approving $516,600 to upgrade Big Blue Bus stops along the Expo route as part of the Sept. 29 consent calendar. Consent calendar items are often approved as a group without individual discussion. These can be items of routine administration, second readings of items already discussed or simple approvals of
contracts where debate is considered unnecessary. According to the staff report, a contract is proposed with CivilSource, Inc. for the Expo Line Bus Stop Implementation project including survey, design, implementation, community outreach, and construction oversight services. With the arrival of Expo along the BBB routes, about 220 new bus stops are envisioned. The new and/or upgraded stops will SEE BUS PAGE 5

Girls tennis: Future is now at Crossroads Roadrunners buoyed by talented freshman class BY JEFFREY I. GOODMAN Daily Press Staff Writer
There’s something different about the Crossroads girls tennis team this year. Although coach Zach Bromberg enjoyed working with the past three editions of the program, he lamented that some previous players didn’t always work as hard or take the sport as seriously as he would have liked. This season, he said, those issues haven’t come up. “This is the best team I’ve ever been a part of,” Bromberg said. “It’s exciting. The overall attitude makes a big difference.” The new dynamic is thanks in part to the influx of a strong freshman class that has already shown promise as the Roadrunners seek to stay relevant in the tough Gold Coast League race. The group includes Olivia Busselle, Leigh Frankel and Phoebe Katims as well as Natasha Resnick and Emily Sures. “There’s exciting potential, but they haven’t made that choice to dedicate their
life to tennis,” Bromberg said. “In tennis, unlike some other sports, you can’t just be a freak athlete. You have to have that technical discipline. ... They have a lot of potential depending on how they want to move forward with tennis.” The freshmen are part of a 13-member squad that has engineered some early success despite playing against opponents with far more tennis experience. Bromberg acknowledged that many of his players have interests beyond tennis but added that the sport can still provide them with valuable lessons. “It’s a tool to discover more about themselves and utilize that in the passions they do have,” he said. “The challenge is that there’s not one girl who trains even close to the level of the girls we’re facing. But my goals are not results-based. “As a coach, I try to separate the expectations from the results and see how they handle themselves. That’s all I care about for them.” That said, the Roadrunners (2-3, 2-2 in the Gold Coast) are no doormats. After season-opening losses to Studio

City-Campbell Hall and Los Angeles-Notre Dame, Crossroads delivered a 14-4 win over Chatsworth-Sierra Canyon thanks in part to doubles victories by Katims and Sures and Resnick and Grace Attanasio and singles sweeps by Maya Matthews, Becca Wachter and Annie Myron. The Roadrunners fell 16-2 to Brentwood four days later in a match that Bromberg said was closer than the final score indicated. “We’ve had so many games where games and sets have been really close, but there was that one degree less of sharpness on our end,” he said. “We’ve been close. Who knows what’ll happen by the end of the season?” Crossroads logged another triumph Thursday with an 11-7 decision against Los Angeles-Windward. Singles wins by Frankel, Matthews and Wachter complemented doubles victories by Attanasio and Myron and Sures and Sophia Deutsch. Their season continues Tuesday afternoon with a conference match against Calabasas-Viewpoint. Bromberg, an Arizona native who moved

Award winning midcentury home to host Conservancy annual salon Synthesis, a local design build firm, is part of the Santa Monica Conservancy’s Annual Salon on Saturday, Oct. 10. The Salon will be hosted at Synthesis’ award winning Vukadinovich home in the North of Montana neighborhood. Homeowners David and Elaine Vukadinovich hired Synthesis in 2013 to preserve the home’s midcentury iconic style, while also creating additions that were effortless and functional for the family’s 21st century needs. The original 1950 design by Frederick Monhoff was renovated by Synthesis and was one of five homes featured on the Dwell Magazine West Side Home Tour held on May 23. Synthesis and the Vukadinovich family also received the Santa Monica Conservancy Preservation Award on Feb. 8 at the Hotel Casa Del Mar in Santa Monica. “I’m excited to share the experience of the home with the community,” said Abeer Sweis, founder and CEO of Synthesis. Sweis will be speaking about the ideas, challenges and successes she encountered while designing and building this home. The Salon will include a tour, wine and refreshments. All proceeds of the Salon will benefit the Conservancy’s educational programs. Synthesis specializes in residential and commercial interior and architectural design as well as construction management in the greater Los Angeles area. The Santa Monica Conservancy’s Annual Salon is Saturday, Oct. 10 from 4 to 6 p.m. Tickets are $150 for members and $175 for non-members. For more information visit www.smconservancy.org. dean of instruction. “It’s an exciting project, and it’s coming along really well.” SMC’s ongoing development of a bachelor’s degree in interaction design follows approval from the California Community Colleges Board of Governors as part of a pilot program that Governor Jerry Brown authorized last year. The local college was chosen because of its perceived ability to build an effective, career-oriented pathway that will meet workforce needs and avoid overlap with UC and California State University offerings. SMC’s proposal was spearheaded by Jamie Cavanaugh, who has taught full-time in the graphic design department since 2010. The new pathway figures to include instruction and projects in interaction design, product design and coding, as well as cognitive psychology. An industry-sponsored senior studio is also planned. All instructors who teach upper-division IxD classes will also teach lower-division courses, Merlic said. SMC estimates the total cost of the bachelor’s program to be about $10,000. That fig-

ure includes $46 per unit of lower-division coursework and $130 per unit of upper-division classes, but it does not include textbooks and other expenses. The new program will be housed in the college’s forthcoming Center for Media and Design on Stewart Street, which is scheduled to open next summer. If El Nino storms delay the construction process, Merlic said, the courses will be offered in the fall at the Airport Avenue campus. The email database that SMC created to inform prospective students about the program now has about 600 recipients, Merlic said. Three workshops about the IxD degree will be held starting next month. Applications for the upper-division pathway are slated to be available by November, Merlic said, and the first cohort of students will be accepted this spring for the inaugural fall 2016 program. Ideal candidates will have completed lower-division coursework by this summer. Officials anticipate that 50-60 students will be enrolled in the IxD program each fall. Students who are interested in the bachelor’s degree are being encouraged to enroll in the prerequisite graphic design courses.

tem, and providing construction notification regarding planned improvements,” said the report. Staff reviewed two bids for the work and are recommending a contract with CivilSource, Inc., in an amount not to exceed $516,600. The Big Blue Bus is a division of the City of Santa Monica and the council approves expenditures. However, BBB is funded through local, state and federal grants along with revenue from fares. No general fund money is allocated to BBB projects. Staff said the money to be discussed on Sept. 29 covers administration of the project and actual construction costs are expected to be split between Santa Monica and Los Angeles. The project is one of many included in the Big Blue Bus Expo Integration Study. According to the study, the seven new Expo stations in the BBB service area are an opportunity for the bus line to attract new riders. “With many key destinations in the Big Blue Bus service area beyond walking distance from the new stations, and station parking at a premium, first and last mile connections will be crucial to maximizing the benefit of the rail line on traffic congestion and quality of life,” the study said. BBB has also realigned routes to meet the perceived needs of Expo riders and recently announced changes to fares that bring the system in line with other regional bus carriers. The City Council meeting will be held on Sept. 29 at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall, 1685 Main St. EDITOR@smdp.com

Increase in whale deaths in the Gulf of Alaska Dear EarthTalk: Do scientists have any idea why so many whales are dying in the Gulf of Alaska lately?
Michelle DiCostanzo New York, NY
OVER THE PAST FOUR MONTHS, 33
large whales have been reported dead in the Western Gulf of Alaska, which encompasses the areas around Kodiak Island, Afognak Island, Chirikof Island, the Semidi Islands and the southern shoreline of the Alaska Peninsula. The significant die-off of whales has been declared an Unusual Mortality Event (UME) by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), marking the first large whale UME ever in Alaska. The majority of the deceased humpback, fin and gray whales have been found moderately to severely decomposed and scientists have only been able to obtain samples thus far from one fin whale. Alaskan citizens have been instructed to call the Alaska Marine Mammal Stranding Network hotline immediately if a stranded or dead whale is spotted to ensure the fastest response possible by trained experts. “Large whale UMEs are the most difficult UMEs to deal with, principally because the animals are floating and rarely beached and we have a difficult time getting to the carcasses to actually examine them,” says Dr. Teri Rowles, Coordinator of the NOAA Fisheries Marine Mammal Health and Stranding Program. “The most critical thing for this UME, given it is large whales, is our ability to get to the animals, document them, and if possible perform sample collections either at sea or on the beach if they are stranded. It is critical that the public and mariners report large whale mortalities or animals that they see in distress as soon as possible so that the Network can either document, access or track the carcasses.” Exposure to harmful algae blooms (HAB) is NOAA’s leading theory for the cause of the surge in whale deaths. While the organization has collected some disparate samples of phytoplankton in the Gulf of Alaska that they determined could possibly produce biotoxins, there is no conclusive
data currently associating the whale deaths to HAB, and the fin whale sample tested negative for HAB biotoxins. “Even though the one sample we tested was negative, it was not the most appropriate sample to collect and test for biotoxins. We can’t rule it out based on the results we have right now,” Rowles adds. “It’s my understanding that sea surface water and air temperatures in the Gulf of Alaska have been high, and that always concerns us because that means there’s probably a change in overall pathogen exposure-possibly HABs and other factors.” Claims that the UME is linked to the Fukushima nuclear reactor meltdown or the Navy-led “Northern Edge” military training exercises conducted in the Gulf of Alaska this past June have been dismissed due to lack of evidence. Muscle tissue from the fin whale sampled was sent to the University of Alaska Fairbanks for cesium analysis, and the preliminary results did not suggest any unusual exposure to manmade radiation. As the investigation continues, NOAA will be publishing updated information pertaining to the UME on their website as it becomes available; however, the investigation could take months or even years to complete. “It takes a fair amount of time to pull data together even if the event is over, and a lot of deliberation and analyses have to happen in order to determine what’s going on,” Rowles added. “It could be quite a period of time before we actually have an answer, if indeed we end up with a definitive answer for this UME.” CONTACT: NOAA Fisheries, www.nmfs.noaa.gov. PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The proposed 500 Broadway Mixed Use Project would involve the demolition of the existing one-story commercial building and a surface parking lot on two contiguous parcels totaling approximately 67,500 square feet (sf) of land area and the construction of a 316,653 square foot (sf) mixed use building with 262 residential units and 68,093 square feet of commercial uses in the Downtown District of the City of Santa Monica. The proposed project building would be 84 feet in height with a podium/ground level that would potentially include a mezzanine/additional floor within a portion of the ground floor space. Above the ground floor, the building would have four linked building forms connected by open-air pedestrian bridges. The project would include a public plaza located at the corner of 5th Street and Broadway as well as widened sidewalks on Broadway and 5th Street. The project would also include a shared “Cross Court” vehicular, pedestrian, and bicycle access way to provide a mid-block connection between 5th Street and 5th Court. Vehicular access to the subterranean parking structure would be provided off 5th Street via the proposed Cross Court driveway midway along the block; additional residential and loading access would be provided off of 5th Court via Broadway. The project would include a four-level subterranean parking garage at 500 Broadway providing a total of approximately 577 commercial and residential parking spaces.
Small SSW swell. Small windswell.
In addition to market-rate housing, the project would include deed-restricted affordable housing (either provided on-site, off-site, or at a combination of on-site and off-site locations). Regardless of where the affordable units are provided, the maximum number of dwellings to be constructed at 500 Broadway will be 262 units. If affordable housing is built off-site as part of this project, the off-site locations would be located in the Downtown area and there would be a maximum of 70 off-site units, all of which would be deed-restricted affordable units. Thus, if affordable housing is provided off-site, a maximum of up to 332 dwellings would be constructed as a result of this project. The 500 Broadway Mixed Use Housing Project would be implemented through a Development Agreement with the City of Santa Monica. ANTICIPATED ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS: The Draft EIR analyzed potential environmental impacts associated with the proposed project including: Aesthetics/Shadows, Air Quality, Construction Effects, Cultural Resources, Geology/Soils, Greenhouse Gas Effects, Hazards and Hazardous Materials, Land Use and Planning, Neighborhood Effects, Noise, Population/Housing, Public Services, Transportation/Circulation, and Utilities. PUBLIC REVIEW PERIOD: In accordance with CEQA, a minimum 45-day public review period will be provided for all interested persons to submit comments on the adequacy of the Draft EIR. The comment period will start on September 28, 2015 and end at 5:30 p.m. on November 12, 2015. Written comments should be sent to: Steve Mizokami, Associate Planner City Planning Division 1685 Main Street, Room 212 Santa Monica, CA 90401 Email: steve.mizokami@smgov.net AVAILABILITY OF ENVIRONMENTAL DOCUMENTATION: The Draft EIR and background materials may be viewed online at http://www.smgov.net/Departments/PCD/EnvironmentalReports/500-Broadway-Mixed-Use-Housing-Project-EIR/ or in person at the following locations: City Planning Division Public Counter Room 111 1685 Main Street, Santa Monica, CA

Sudoku Fill in the blank cells using numbers 1 to 9. Each number can appear only once in each row, column, and 3x3 block. Use logic and process of elimination to solve the puzzle. The difficulty level ranges from (easiest) to (hardest).
GETTING STARTED There are many strategies to solving Sudoku. One way to begin is to examine each 3x3 grid and figure out which numbers are missing. Then, based on the other numbers in the row and column of each blank cell, find which of the missing numbers will work. Eliminating numbers will eventually lead you to the answer. ■ One of the remaining 116 Guantanamo Bay prisoners (a man suspected of having been close to Osama bin Laden) has a dating profile on Match.com captioned “detained but ready to mingle,” the man’s lawyer Carlos Warner told Al Jazeera America in September. Muhammad Rahim al-Afghani has relentlessly proclaimed his innocence, and Warner released a series of charming letters from his client intended to humanize him. Al-Afghani commented on Lebron James, Caitlyn Jenner, the Ashley Madison website and, for some reason, South Dakota, but with the recent publicity, Match.com appears to have suspended the account.

■ “Let me get this straight,” wrote an incredulous commenter in September. “(T)hose who oversee” the Matthaei Botanical Gardens in Ann Arbor, Michigan, have the park “populated with snakes that can bite and inflict serious wounds.” The remark was in response to a visitor’s having been bitten by one of at least 27 rattlesnakes loose (by design) on the grounds. (The Eastern Massasauga rattler is protected by state law.) On the other hand, the park has posted many snake warning signs, and the woman who was bitten had removed her shoes to walk in the lush grass.

That’s a killer selfie, dude By Katharine Romefelt
Stop! Is that snapshot of you with a running chainsaw really worth it? “Selfies” — those cute pictures displaying both your coolness and your narcissism — have become increasingly lethal. In 2015 alone, eager selfie obsessives have accidentally shot themselves, been electrocuted, even fallen down the steps of the Taj Mahal in efforts to capture the perfect image of themselves.
In fact, selfies-gone-wrong kill more people than shark attacks! Those bloodthirsty monsters (who aren’t actually interested in eating humans) have killed eight people since January. Selfie monsters have claimed a dozen lives. Some countries have actually made specific efforts to reduce the risk of selfie-taking accidents. Uluru, a 16-story monolith in the center of Australia’s Outback, was recently closed because tourists continued to take perilous pictures on the structure’s edge, ignoring those warning signs that show a little silhouette falling into oblivion.
