UCLA Breast Center offers prone breast radiation therapy, more convenience to patients Daily Press Staff Writer
Barbara Abrams had worked as a labor and delivery nurse since 1979 and planned to retire last year. It just so happened that the day she had selected to bow out ended up being the day her granddaughter was born. But following this newfound joy in her life came some bad news: Abrams was diagnosed with cancer in her left breast this July. Luckily for the now
retired nurse, having worked at UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, she knew exactly where to turn. Just one week after being diagnosed, Abrams was sitting with her family in a room in the UCLA Breast Center, Santa Monica as a group of doctors came in one at a time to discuss her course of treatment. “You get this devastating news and this made it easier,” Abrams said. “All the caregivers, all the medical providers came to us, which was so wonderful. I never felt at any minute that anybody

I felt that I was the most important person in that room.” Abrams said that coming into a difficult situation, the doctors handled everything better than she could have hoped for. “Any questions that I had or concerns I had were immediately addressed. tion for the movie goes to Shafer, who arrived at the local church in 2014 after leaving his job in New York City as a senior vice president at multi-faith nonprofit media company Odyssey Networks. One of the few people Shafer knew in Southern California when he moved was his college roommate, Ric Enge, whose son Scott works in the film industry as a production designer. “He was involved in this Christmas TV movie, and he knew I was here, so he called up,” Shafer said. “It’s a small world.” Shafer acknowledged that churches in the Los Angeles area, because of their proximity to Hollywood studios and entertainment industry professionals, are often used as filming locations. But he said the recent shoot was a significant coup for Mt. Olive, which to his knowledge had never been chosen for movie work before. The church, located near the corner of Ocean Park Boulevard and 14th Street, has about 200 members. The church was founded by A.O. Aasen in 1942 and started in a rented space on 16th Street but moved to its current location in the early 1960s. Its preschool opened in 1973. Filming took place at Mt. Olive’s sanc-
What started as an incident at a local youth flag football game has led to flaring tensions, allegations of racism and attempts by city and school officials to address community concerns. An account provided by city officials, who investigated the matter, offers details into what they described as “unacceptable” behavior by a parent who verbally assaulted an opposing player. The friction stemmed from an Oct. 3 game at Memorial Park in a city-sponsored league that features teams composed of students from different Santa Monica elementary schools. The incident began when a Franklin Chargers player was injured during game play due to contact with an Edison Ravens player, city spokeswoman Debbie Lee said. The contact was later determined to be accidental. “Flag football is still football,” she said. “It can be a very physical sport.” The father of the Franklin player grew upset, came onto the field and used inappropriate language, including a racial slur. A referee asked the Franklin father to leave the game, but he refused, Lee said. City officials received an email from the Edison player’s mother “expressing displeasure with how the situation went down,” Lee said. City staff also heard about the incident from other parents from both schools. The Daily Press is not identifying the child who was verbally assaulted or his mother due to pri-

A giant Christmas tree stood on the premise, wreaths adorned the facilities and large boxes were wrapped and tied with ribbons to look like gifts. The elaborate decorations all seemed appropriate for Christmas time at Mt. Olive Lutheran Church, except for the fact that it was June. The holiday scene wasn’t the result of a colossal calendar mix-up. Rather, it was evidence of filming activity at the Santa Monica church, which was used this summer as a set location for a Christmasthemed movie called “How Sarah Got Her Wings.” Dozens of actors, designers, production assistants and other crew members convened at the Ocean Park Boulevard church for three days and nights of shooting for the film, the debut broadcast of which is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 6, on ION Television. “We’re excited,” said Reverend Eric C. Shafer, the church’s senior pastor. “I’m sure it’ll be something we like. ... To have the church used for a positive experience about Christmas, why wouldn’t we be happy about that?” At least some of the credit for the selection of Mt. Olive as a shooting loca-

proffered for building more low-income housing here is to maintain community diversity. “We don’t want Santa Monica to turn into another Beverly Hills,” is a frequent comment from the prodevelopment/affordable housing/Santa Monica Forward lobby. Think about it. Is that so bad? Beverly Hills is cleaner, has a lower crime rate than Santa Monica and many more amenities for residents. But, I get what diversity advocates are saying. A community made up of variety of individuals - ethnically, racially and economically - is always more interesting and valuable to the community. Despite high property values and increasing rents, no matter where I go in Santa Monica, I see diversity. At our supermarkets, I see people of all races, income levels and ethnicities. If they’re grocery shopping here, they probably live nearby. The Third Street Promenade, Main Street and Montana Avenue look like meetings from the United Nations. I don’t buy the bogus claim that if we don’t build hundreds of low-income apartments annually, we’ll lose it or become like Beverly Hills. We have plenty of diversity. Idealists, those profiting in the affordable housing industry and developers who know a few extra low income units will get them height and density bonuses worth millions of dollars are pushing the “need more housing” agenda. Powerful members of the Santa Monica for Renters’ Rights (SMRR) steering committee see developer benefits as a way to finance favorite causes and recruit more members. Council just approved a development agreement for a five floor (60 feet tall), 100 unit mixed-use project at 1560 Lincoln Boulevard (formerly Denny’s). Its developer, NMS Properties, has promised to provide 20 low-income affordable units on site, $150,000 for early childhood initiatives and $745,000 for parks and recreation uses, among other benefits. Councilmembers were enthusiastic about the pedestrian experience the project would bring to the corner of Lincoln and Colorado. Really? What’s council’s fascination with people on sidewalks, assuming that will occur when this turkey is opened? Pedestrian traffic isn’t a community benefit but I digress. Council also OK’d a mixed-use development at 1415 5th Street, with six floors (84 feet) and 64 apartments,14 of them “affordable.” NMS Properties promised a monetary contribution of $90,000 toward transportation programs, $280,000 toward parks and recreation programs, $100,000 toward early childhood initiatives and $40,000 toward Big Blue Bus downtown improvements, among others. In return, NMS can far exceed the site’s current zoning which calls for a 32-foot building. Fifield Co. Ltd., the developer of 1601 Lincoln (formerly Norms), a 90-apartment project (18 on site low-income units) with a five floor (57 foot) wing, has promised $820,000 for transportation programs, $595,000 for parks and recreation use, $150,000 for early childhood education and an additional $150,000 for affordable housing elsewhere in the city, among other benefits. Council is expected to review this in December.
Who makes out? While the early childhood lobby gets $400,000, parks advocates win $1,390,000 and housing advocates get dozens of new, low-income housing units, the rest of us face an overly tall and unattractive skyline for the rest of our lives. When asked about increased water use resulting from all the development, Mayor Kevin McKeown is on record as saying that housing development wasn’t contributing to the problem because new units will have low flow toilets and showerheads. Really? Say anything to push the old agenda. Community benefits provide an opportunity for cronyism, mutual back scratching and favoritism, not real community value. Judy Abdo, a co-founder of Santa Monica Forward, a developer-backed group that supports more housing and development, sees hundreds of thousands of developer “community benefit” dollars flow into her pet causes: early childhood education and affordable housing (to name two). In return for her support, Abdo, a former mayor and councilwoman (1988-1996) who sits on the powerful SMRR steering committee, makes it a point to let developers know exactly what’s required to get her backing and their developments built. Ask Santa Monicans whether they’d rather have more diversity or improved circulation, more cultural opportunities and optimal park/recreational facilities for their kids. More housing development for people who want to move here or meaningful social programs for our seniors, children and the disabled? There may be hope. New City Manager Rick Cole suggested to council (Oct. 13) that piecemeal approval of developments be put “on hold” pending adoption of a Downtown Specific Plan (DSP) and that it establish a standardized list of community benefits pegged to levels of development and a cap on the maximum size of projects. It’s a smart move that would go a long way to take the finagling and politics out of the planning process and substantially reduce the development agreement/spot planning process now in effect. THE QUASIMODO AT FOURTH AND ARIZONA
As a reminder, much of the council meeting tomorrow night will be spent discussing the concept plans for the development agreement for a 12-floor (148 foot) 420,200 sq. ft. mixed-use development at 1401 Fourth St. at Arizona Avenue. When it comes to community benefits, the staff report states, “It is anticipated that the amount and nature of affordable housing, cultural space, and public space programming would exceed the contributions that would have otherwise been negotiated for childcare, cultural arts, affordable housing, and parks and recreation.” In other words, this development’s amenities, designed to make it attractive and very profitable, are community benefits? We’re being scammed. It will be interesting to see how much decision making will take place tomorrow evening pending Cole’s suggested moratorium on downtown development until a DSP is finalized next year. able warning” before knowingly and intentionally exposing anyone to a Proposition 65 listed chemical. Once a chemical is listed, businesses have a year to comply with the warning requirements. OEHHA is accepting public comments until October 20 on whether glyphosate should be listed under Proposition 65. “If they decide to list this chemical [under Proposition 65] and it survives the inevitable legal challenges, I think it’s possible that every bottle of Roundup or glyphosate formulation sold in the state of California would have to be labeled as known...to cause cancer,” Nathan Donley, a staff scientist with the Center for Biological Diversity, told Pacific Standard. “It would be a huge deterrent for the purchase of this product, at least in that state.” He added that Monsanto has created a “false narrative” that glyphosate is safe. “That position clearly can’t be maintained anymore…and I think it will probably be a precursor for hopefully federal action, at least federal acknowledgment that glyphosate does cause cancer.” In addition to the threat of a warning label on their glyphosate products in California, Monsanto is currently facing lawsuits by two people claiming that Roundup caused their cancers. Enrique Rubio filed suit on September 22nd in Los Angeles, claiming that the bone cancer he was diagnosed with back in 1995 was a result of spraying fields of crops with Roundup and other pesticides. The second lawsuit, filed on the same day in New York by Judi Fitzgerald, claims she was exposed to Roundup when she worked at a horticultural products company in the 1990s. Fitzgerald was diagnosed with leukemia in 2012.

contain three key components: the active ingredient glyphosate, water, and a soap-like surfactant blend. The agricultural application of glyphosate has skyrocketed over the past 20 years. According to the U.S. Geological Survey’s “Estimated Agricultural Use for Glyphosate” map, in 2012 over 250 million pounds of glyphosate were used on crops in across the country-a substantial increase from the less than 22 million pounds used in 1992. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified the cancer-causing potential of glyphosate as Category E (“evidence of non-carcinogenicity for humans”), but the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) recently re-classified it as a group 2A “probable” carcinogen. IARC’s recent evaluation of glyphosate found “limited evidence of carcinogenicity in humans for non-Hodgkin lymphoma” and “convincing evidence that glyphosate also can cause cancer in laboratory animals.” Monsanto struck back, stating that the IARC’s conclusion “conflicts with the overwhelming consensus by regulatory bodies and science organizations around the world…which have found no evidence of carcinogenicity.” Monsanto added: “Further, the 2A classification does not establish a link between glyphosate and an increase in cancer. ‘Probable’ does not mean that glyphosate causes cancer; even at 100 times the exposure that occurs during normal labeled use glyphosate is not a human health risk.” In September 2015, in response to the IARC findings, the California EPA’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) announced its intent to list glyphosate as a carcinogen under the state’s Proposition 65 law. Camera Obscura art lab For their annual celebration of the art of drawing, 1450 Ocean presents a low-cost class with Miles Lewis on the intricacies of portrait drawing from life, using ink brushes and pens. Using permanent lines and strokes, artists are forced to love and build upon each mark they make. Do you have what it takes? All levels welcome. Draw from a live model. This class is open to any level of portrait-drawing experience. Ink brush and wash techniques have been a common sketching technique for centuries. The quickness and lightness of the method allows for an elegance and flow that pencils or ballpoint pens do not permit. Ink’s permanence turns the drawing into a kind of successive game, where each line must work with and against others to create space, volume and tension.
Students will work to capture the anatomical landmarks and value pattern of the head, while focusing on economy of line and simplicity of expression. Students will leave class with a clear idea about how to stylize their portrait drawings for ink work. Material fee includes brush pen. Miles Lewis is an LA native and a recent CSU Northridge graduate. Beginning as a painter, poet, and educator, he found printmaking and planted a flag for synthesis. He is the co-director of the San Fernando Valley-based Valley Print Studio with Zeina Baltagi. Through the studio, he is committed to professional collaboration, community education, and the advancement of physical graphics. vacy concerns. The Daily Press is not identifying the Franklin parent because no charges were filed. “Our staff did a thorough review, and there was no intended malice between the two boys,” Lee said. “It was an accident. It’s an extremely unfortunate accident.” The incident happened in a league run through CREST, a city-backed program that provides recreational activities for local youths. The program’s flag football leagues are assembled so that kids who attend the same schools play with each other on the same teams. Parents of participating players typically sign sportsmanship agreements. They are asked to respect all players, coaches and referees, and they are urged not to use profanity. A parent’s disregard for the agreement could lead to a child being dismissed from the team, Lee said. The Franklin parent was reminded of the rules and given a warning, officials said. “These CREST sports are geared towards having a good experience for the children,” Lee said. “We want children to participate regardless of ability. It’s about skill development, teamwork and respect for each other

as patients receiving prone therapy are usually given shorter courses of whole breast treatment. Without prone, many women with larger breasts are not usually candidates for these shorter courses. McCloskey said there is also the matter of the heart when it comes to prone, literally. “There is no question that prone offers far less radiation doses to the lungs, and leads to less of the normal organ toxicity that radiation patients receive,” McCloskey said. “But women who have a larger breast size, or cancer in their left breast, spare the heart more this way as well.” Abrams happens to have been a candidate for prone who just completed her radiation therapy. And though she knew nothing about the treatment beforehand, she is pleased with her experience. “You know, actually coming in I was totally ignorant, despite being a medical person. I just had really no opinion, no information. But when we talked about it Dr. McCloskey suggested that, because it was on my left breast and because I have large breasts it would be a good option for me so that it could spare my heart and my heart muscle,” Abrams said. Abrams, who does not like MRIs, ended up being able to handle this treatment no problem. “It literally took five minutes a session. I would count to 100 and by the time I got to 100 it was done.”

appointment. And by the time I left there was a plan of care in place,” Abrams said. Dr. Susie McCloskey, who works in radiation and oncology and is co-director of the center, said the idea for the center, established in 2012, came together very naturally among the doctors and leadership at the hospital in an attempt to improve the quality of care women were receiving. “We wanted to increase communication and consistency and to deliver care in a really collaborative way among the doctors,” McCloskey said. McCloskey said the way that occurred was twofold in terms of what patients have reported back to them. “First, for women who were newly diagnosed, as opposed to having to go from appointment to appointment, doctor to doctor, in different locations at different times, we sort of brought all of the doctors to them under one roof. So certainly that convenience of care model was the major logistic change. “The other thing that patients seem to love is that we hired a coordinator for the breast center who could be a single point of contact to help navigate what is otherwise a very complicated system.” McCloskey believes these reasons are why their endorsement rates are almost 100 percent across the board.

BEDSIDE MANNER
Having been a nurse, Abrams is in a position to really evaluate how patients are treated, and she applied that thinking to how she herself was treated at the UCLA Breast Center, Santa Monica. “As a patient, you want to be treated like you would treat your patients. And I definitely felt that and more. Being here was something that met my individual needs. What was going on with me at that moment was the most important thing to everybody and I did not feel like I was being neglected,” Abrams said. McCloskey takes note of these concerns and tries to sympathize and accommodate her patients as best she can. “We try to smooth the edges of what is always going to be an anxiety provoking situation,” she said. And according to Abrams, they are doing just that. “It’s frustrating when things don’t go the way you want with a patient. Here they’ve kind of got it nailed.”
TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT
Another component of the breast center that McCloskey is proud of is a treatment option they have which is not commonly offered elsewhere: prone breast radiation therapy. “Opposed to how we traditionally set women up for breast radiation therapy which is called supine, and being set up on their back, prone is set up for radiation delivery laying on the belly,” McCloskey said. The patient lies flat on their stomach on a special board with a hole meant for the affected breast to go into. According to McCloskey, this way of receiving radiation treatment is beneficial to patients, especially those with larger breasts, for several reasons. “One reason is that women tend to get the greatest severity of skin reactions out around the folds of the breasts, so when you displace those folds in the prone position the skin effects tend to be far less; there is a reduction in skin toxicity.” There is also the matter of convenience,

Officers responded to a call to the 2100 block of Pearl Street and met with officers from Santa Monica College in response to a person they had detained for stealing a bike. According to the call, the subject, later identified as Dionte Thompson, 37 of Los Angeles, had stolen a Bikeshare bicycle that was property of the City of Santa Monica. According to the witness, she saw Thompson vigorously shaking a parking sign in an attempt to steel a green bicycle locked up to the pole. The witness went on to state that she saw him dislodge the bike and start dragging the bike across Pearl Street. Thompson was seen trying to pull something off of the bike to no avail, so he left the bike on the 2200 block of Pearl Street. While the witness called 911 and was on the phone with dispatch, she flagged down a SMC officer driving down the road. Thompson was taken to the SMC police station and was later picked up and transported by Santa Monica Police officers to the station. While en route to the station, Thompson went on to tell officers that he was God and everything was his. Thompson was arrested for grand theft and probation violation. Bail was set at $20,000.

Sudoku Fill in the blank cells using numbers 1 to 9. Each number can appear only once in each row, column, and 3x3 block. Use logic and process of elimination to solve the puzzle. The difficulty level ranges from (easiest) to (hardest).
GETTING STARTED There are many strategies to solving Sudoku. One way to begin is to examine each 3x3 grid and figure out which numbers are missing. Then, based on the other numbers in the row and column of each blank cell, find which of the missing numbers will work. Eliminating numbers will eventually lead you to the answer. ■ Unapparent Problem, Solved: Vladimir Laurent (an insurance executive in Coral Springs, Florida) received his U.S. patent on Sept. 29 and can proceed mass-producing “The Shield” -his brainstorm to keep men’s genitalia from dragging on the inside of toilet bowls while they’re seated. Laurent told the South Florida Business Journal that his device was something he “needed, personally” (though he’s aware that not all males experience the sensation). The Shield is basically a cup attached to the bowl by suction that allows movement via a ball-and-socket joint. ■ Kentucky’s government ethics law bars gifts from lobbyists to

(The laws were passed after the FBI found several Kentucky politicians selling their votes.) And in May, officials of the American Gaming (gambling) Association and the Association of Club Executives complained to the Pentagon that a threatened prohibition of the use of government credit cards at casinos and strip clubs violated card users’ constitutional rights, in that protected activities (such as business strategy meetings) take place at those venues.

Students got your back, Mack by Neva Rodrigues
Earlier this week, a southern California high school won the chance of a lifetime: to have hip-hop superstars Macklemore and Ryan Lewis perform on campus AND to receive a $10,000 grant for the school’s struggling arts and music departments. However, the school’s administration refused the prize, claiming some parents voiced concerns about the duo’s lyrics. How could these obviously uninformed parents be so blind? Macklemore is
renowned for their strong support of gay rights and anti-drug use messages (maybe you’ve heard “Same Love?” How about “Otherside?”). They’ve even been honored by the ACLU for their activism! Naturally, students were upset (I mean, wouldn’t you be?). But they didn’t just complain about it. They decided to take matters into their own hands. Rallying online through petitions and social media — the hashtag #bringbackmack has been tweeted over 700 times since news broke — they garnered overwhelming support from peers and fans

• Parents of children with special needs have a completely different experience of life. The daily challenges, the roller coaster of emotions, the fear of the future—all of this can be overwhelming. But here’s one thing that shouldn’t be: the cost of therapy interventions.
• CSF is one of L.A.’s few financial assistance programs available to support essential therapies for children with developmental, learning, and behavioral delays.
• The Child Success Foundation provides funding for essential therapy to families whose inability to pay for services would prevent their child from accessing this support.
These services will make the difference between a child just surviving and a child thriving socially, physically, academically, and emotionally.
