A roller coaster ride to the heyday of funk

OHIO PLAYERS

I

t’s likely that you’ve heard an Ohio Players song. And if you haven’t, well, you probably have and just didn’t know it. Consider “Love Rollercoaster,” a groovy hit track that the disco R&B group released in the mid-1970s that regained popularity when the Red Hot Chili Peppers covered it some two decades later. Contemplate “Fire,” a funk-filled tune that found a home as the theme music for “Hell’s Kitchen,” a competitive cooking show featuring chef Gordon Ramsay. Or simply take stock of the numerous hip-hop artists that have sampled Ohio Players music, including Jay-Z, A Tribe Called Quest, Snoop Dogg and the Beastie Boys. “They say it’s the highest form of flattery,” says James “Diamond” Williams, one of the longest-tenured members of the Ohio Players. “It means that they like the music enough to want to sample it or do it again. We’ll go for that. There’s a big chaching that happens around here no matter

who does it. But we feel very flattered that they would use or cover our material.” Of course, Williams maintains that the best way to appreciate the Ohio Players is to listen to them straight from the source, which fans in Southern California will have the chance to do Thursday night. The 11-piece ensemble takes the stage at Santa Monica Pier to headline the final Twilight Concert Series show of the summer, and if Williams has his way, it’ll be a memorable evening. “The bottom line is, the funk is going to be in your face and it’s going to be coming strong,” he says. “People are going to get up and dance and party because they have no choice. That’s all it is. ... It’s a magical time when we hit the stage.” The concert is a homecoming of sorts for Williams, who spent time in and around Santa Monica in the late ’70s and early ’80s with fellow band members Billy Beck and Clarence Willis. That was some 35 years ago, but Williams remembered in vivid detail the

area he called home in the period around the trio’s side project as Shadow. And he recalled regular trips to the pier to fetch gifts for his daughters, including a stuffed doll and a Mickey Mouse ring. “We loved that area a lot,” he said. So when Williams heard about the opportunity to bring the Ohio Players to the pier, he jumped at the chance. Watching footage of other bands’ performances at the Twilight Concert Series further inspired the group to participate. “We have been aware of that festival for years and have always wanted to play it,” he said. “We look forward to coming there.” Williams, Beck, Willis and Robert “Kuumba” Jones highlight a group that feels its musical skill is one of its best qualities in an era where so many artists rely on computers, samplers and sound effects. The Ohio Players are currently working on a few new songs and plan to release three to five tracks as a teaser for a future album.

“Our fan base has been tremendous around the country,” Williams says. “We enjoy what we’re doing right now, and they see that. ... Everybody’s playing everything and singing. What a concept. It goes back to ... doing a little bit of work necessary to perform. That’s what this band prides ourself on.” Indeed, more than four decades after forming, the Ohio Players hope to take concert attendees on a musical roller coaster that’s suitable and fun for all. “We have a show that is for everybody from the age of 6 months to 106,” Williams says. “To those who are familiar with us, they will hear it at its best. For those who are unfamiliar, they will hear it at its best. “We might look like old men on the side of the stage, but the moment we hit the stage you see a performing band like no other. I’m very proud of the musicianship. There is nobody in the world that plays the Ohio Players’ music better than the Ohio Players.”

Twilight Concert Series Quotes WHAT HAS BEEN THE BEST PART ABOUT THE TWILIGHT CONCERTS THIS SUMMER? KIM & MADISON

DANIEL, JAZLYM & ARI

KIM Being on the sand, in Santa Monica is a fun activity, now adding a bunch of people and music to it that is the icing on the cake. I love being out and about and talking to people and now making friends is definitely a good experience. MADISON Being in Santa Monica is great, the weather, the beach, the vibes and positivity that is constantly around the city is amazing. I would have to say the best part is that its free and the bands are great. DANIEL Being that we are from LA region I am happy these concerts are so close and nearby. We can go every Thursday and hang out, it gives a little break in the week.

ASPEN

JAZLYM Being able to spend time with not only my friends but also my family. It is a great way to get out, hang out on the beach and listen to music, bring some food and have a blast. ARI There are so many good things that come with the concert, but I love the family vibe there is on the sand. People are so into just relaxing and having fun, there are no problems, but the best part is obviously the music.

ASPEN Fist I am not from California, so this is very different, but coming to these concerts have been really fun and exciting. The food is delicious that is a main reason I love going. Also when you are not watching the bands, its just fun to look onto the beach, and people watch I guess you can say. It is awesome and very fun and I am glad I get to experience this. JOSEPH These concerts are well put together. They are fun, exciting and electric. It has been a good summer and what I am really impressed with is the diversity with the music, its all really good but different which is great because it brings more people together. CAROLINA I grew up here, went to school here and its always great to hang out on Thursdays with some friends and listen to music for free. It is awesome and everyone should experience the twilight concert when they are in Santa Monica.

JOSEPH

great way to get on my feet and listen to music and hang out afterwards. DELIA I am glad that I can enjoy music, drinks, the beach, and my friends all together and getting to listen to the music for free is a great reason to go out and hang out on the Pier. It is a jumpstart to the weekend. RUBY I would have to say the fact its free, everyone can hang out from friends and locals to tourist. I love the food, and the music is always good. SOPHIA Listening to music and hanging out with my friends is always great, I will definitely remember this when I am older. BRIANNA Being on the Pier is a great feeling, being above the water is fun and exciting especially at night. I get to be with my friends the whole time and we get to listen to free music, nothing beats that.

SNAPCHAT

MCKINLEE As corny as this may sound the vibes at the concert are great and positive. Everyone is in such a good mood, it’s just a great place to be. I am a bit bummed out it is the end of the season, but definitely looking forward to next time. HEATHER My favorite thing is the environment the concert provides, the weather is great and the people are even better. It is fun to be in the crowd and listen to music with everyone. I love that the beach is right here, there are games and activities along the Pier. It kind of doesn’t make you want to go home. AMBER The music, hands down is the best part. When the sound of the bass hits you feel it, you feel the steps people take when they are dancing on the Pier. You can see everyone getting in touch with the music and it makes you happy. These concerts put me in a good mood. ANDREW So far the concerts have been awesome. The artists have been phenomenal, and the music has covered a wide

range of genres. It has also been a great feeling seeing different demographics on the Pier, it brings life to the concert. JILL The concerts have been fun, and exciting. Not being from Santa Monica you always wonder the people are like at the concerts, but everyone in Santa Monica and at the concerts this summer have been wonderful and very kind. Everyone just gets along and the music is an A plus. RON I can honestly say the music and diversity has been great, different bands that play different music is awesome. The opening bands are great too. It is a safe and secure atmosphere and I can say my wife and I will be back. KATE The scenery of the concerts is beautiful, who would not want to go to a concert on the beach for free. It is definitely a summer experience and to be with friends makes it that much better. JESS I like being with the Santa Monica com-

munity and being around such a positive atmosphere. The surroundings are always great and the side activities are amazing, the concert is just a fun place to be. BECCA I come for the music; I work in music so being around it without having to work and just enjoy my time makes me happy. There are tons of fans and people who have positive energy. I always have a good time at the concerts. No photo TROY I think the bands have all had good acts; they have been really solid and full of energy. It is a treat for the people of the LA region to get a concert for free. SNAPCHAT All summer I have been dancing the night away on the Pier. I have enjoyed taking pictures and snapchats with fans and families on the here. Everyone has been so nice and welcoming to me. I would have to say my favorite thing of the whole concert series was Save Ferris, it was a great 90’s throwback.

The Ohio Players came into musical prominence in the 1970's as pioneers of street funk and underground R&B. After signing with Mercury Records in 1974 through 1977 The Ohio Players landed three consecutive platinum albums “Skin Tight, “Fire”, and “Honey”. Two number one singles on the billboard pop charts “Fire” and “Love Rollercoaster” and five number one R&B singles “Funky Worm”,”Fire”,”Sweet Sticky Thing”, “Love Rollercoaster,” and “Who'd She Coo”. The Ohio Players traveled the world and produced more than a dozen albums and received 14 gold and platinum awards for their labors. They also appeared on many national television programs from Dick Clark, Don Kushner, to David Letterman. Since then there is a long list of Artists who have sampled or re-recorded their material to list a few: Snoop Dogg, Puff Daddy, Salt & Peppa, Too Short, Sound garden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paul Jackson Jr., and Alex Bugnon. Currently the band consists of 10 members 4 of which are original members. James “Diamond” Williams (Drums), Billy Beck (Keyboard), Clarence Willis (Lead Guitar), and

Robert Kuumba,(Percussion). One might think the band members could now sit back and count their gold and platinum records, enjoy the memories and fade into an easy retirement. Nothing could be further from the truth. These guys have managed to keep busy and have been entertaining crowds of people all over the world who sing their songs and dance to the melodies and funky grooves. The Ohio Players today are one of the few bands from the 70's era who still currently performs all of their music using no computers or samplers to enhance their musical production. The Ohio Players are thankful for still having a large loyal fan base who come to the shows and are still enthusiastic to hear the original sounds from the 70's. The Ohio Players are enthusiastic and eager with the dawn of their new release. “This is your Night” The group's first new release in 13 years. After 38yrs in the business this group is still setting stages on “Fire” and riding their own “Love Rollercoaster”.
