Election night results hold BY DAVID MARK SIMPSON Daily Press Staff Writer
CITYWIDE Early in the morning following election day, after the election night ballots were counted, the smoke hadn’t completely cleared. A percentage point separated second through fifth place in a race for four Board of Education seats. Third and fourth places in the race for three City Council seats were just under 600 votes apart. The Los Angeles County Registrar, which was handling Santa Monica’s election, still had more than 300,000 provisional and vote-by-mail ballots to count countywide. More than half of those have been counted, as of Friday, and (with the excep-
tion of some insignificant changes) results have stayed the same. At least 4,000 ballots have been added to the 20,479 counted in Santa Monica on election night. Board of Education member Ralph Mechur remains the odd man out in the Ed Board race - still about 300 votes behind Board of Education member Oscar de la Torre. Challengers Richard TahvildaranJesswein and Craig Foster have swapped positions. Foster held the second place spot by a couple dozen votes on election night but Tahvildaran-Jesswein now holds it by a couple hundred. Incumbent Laurie Lieberman won reelection easily, currently holding a more than 2,500-vote lead on Tahvildaran-

Jesswein. Boardmember Ben Allen, who still has two years left on his term, was elected to the State Senate in a landslide victory against reproductive rights advocate Sandra Fluke. This will open up a new slot on the board, which Mechur told the Daily Press he’d be very interested in filling. “When a vacancy occurs four or more months before the end of a Board member’s term, the Board shall, within 60 days of the date of the vacancy or the filing of the member’s deferred resignation, either order an election or make a provisional appointment, unless a special election is mandated,” the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s bylaws state.
DOWNTOWN With Thanksgiving fast approaching, it’s not a good time to be a turkey (or a crab, ham, beef joint or really any protein). Tables far and wide will be centered on the entrée, but meat alone does not make a meal. Side dishes will be the bulk of the calories consumed during Thanksgiving dinner and all too often; they are overlooked in anticipa-

Science not a séance Editor:
In your recent article “Noise violations down, noise complaints up at SMO”, one of the chronic complainers and all time champions of phoned in noise complaints criticizes the airport’s noise abatement program, calling it “counter-intuitive.” To him, that may well be. Noise abatement is a science not a séance. Intuition is fine if you want to ponder on the number of airport commissioners that can dance on the head of a pin, but if you want to measure noise you need science. When your car skids on slippery pavement, intuition says to steer in the direction you want to go, physics says to turn into the direction of the skid if you want to survive to drive another day. Our noise monitoring system uses calibrated microphones and recording equipment to measure the sound actually produced by aircraft arriving and departing SMO. Nothing goes in or out of our airport without being thoroughly monitored for sound. Noisy aircraft are warned, fined, or banned if they cannot fly quietly. Our airport staff has done an exemplary job of educating pilots about noise and the result is that noise violations happen on less than one-fifth of one percent of flights. In any other setting, the staff would get bonuses. In Santa Monica they get brickbats. This cutting edge noise abatement program, initiated to comply with the terms of the 1984 airport agreement and codified in the city charter, has made the Santa Monica Municipal Airport the quietest of its type in the country and has set the bar for successful noise mitigation nationwide. The bottom line is that airport related noise is on a par with other types of noise produced in the city by myriad other sources. Not only is the airport as quiet as the rest of the city, but during the nighttime hours when it is closed to departures, it is the quietest large open space in the Westside.

Election post-mortem, part 2 THIS YEAR, THE DEVELOPERS AND
hotel forces gave up masquerading as a bona fide neighborhood group.” Instead, they popped up late in the campaign as the political action committee (PAC) “Responsible Leadership for a Better Santa Monica,” headed by Mayor Pro-Tem Terry O’Day. O’Day’s PAC received money from hotel operators Edward Thomas Management Company (Shutters/ Casa del Mar), Ocean Avenue, LLC (Miramar) and Felcor Lodging Trust; Developers Century West Partners and Kilroy Realty, L.P. and Assemblyman Richard Bloom among others. The PAC supported Frank Gruber and Pam O’Connor for council. The same developers, hotel interests and housing advocates were major contributors to the “Committee to Protect Affordable Housing - Yes on H & HH” ballot measures. H/HH would have tripled the real estate transfer tax to fund low-income housing to be developed by City Hall’s Community Corporation of Santa Monica. It was nothing more than “big money” currying favor with planning commissioners and council politicians who consider public housing a priority. Despite a blizzard of half-truths and outright lies about H/HH benefits, the electorate said “No way” to the propositions. Maybe the tide is turning and voters are tired of being taxed and taxed to fund politicians’ pet projects. Or, maybe they’re finally realizing that City hall’s housing policies really don’t benefit Santa Monica’s seniors, singles or disabled and that policy makers have prioritized the homeless and low income out-oftowners to occupy Santa Monica’s affordable housing and expand the Santa Monica for Renters’ Rights (SMRR) voter base. This election had its share of dirty tricks. Some scumbag(s) removed 40 of Phil Brock’s lawn signs from north side private properties Election Day morning. How about Judy Abdo’s recorded phone pitch to voters? She identified herself as a member of the SMRR Steering Committee and asked folks to vote for Gruber and O’Connor. One problem: SMRR didn’t endorse them although her intent was to imply that they did. After the hanky-panky during their endorsement process and a campaign mailer taking credit for stopping the Hines development, SMRR’s leaders need to clean up their act. Maybe Abdo should be removed from the steering committee for her abuse of power. Fat chance of that happening. Unite Here, Local 11 (hospitality union) had all kinds of problems, too. Their endorsee Frank Gruber lost and their hit piece on school board candidate Craig Foster backfired. Their “Voter Alert” accused Foster of opposing policies aimed at closing the achievement gap. Worse yet, the flyer implied endorsement by the Santa MonicaMalibu Classroom Teachers Association, SMRR and others. According to Karen Farrer President of the Malibu Schools Leadership Council, the Classroom Teachers Association publicly disavowed any approval or prior knowledge of this flyer. SMRR has also it had noth-
ing to do with the piece. Gotcha! Speaking of school races, I was delighted to see Craig Foster win. When Ben Allen resigns to take his State Senate seat, a board position will open up. The remaining six board members will appoint an interim member until the next election. Ralph “Let’s all get along” Mechur who failed to get reelected recently told the Daily Press that he wanted the appointment. That would be a huge mistake. There are a lot of problems at the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District, Administrators, board members and school cheerleaders either ignore them or try to paint a happy face on everything. Result: nothing ever improves. Want proof? Just look around and see how many well-off Santa Monicans are now sending their children - our best and brightest - to a host of private schools thus contributing to a continued widening of the SMMUSD’s achievement gap. We have an excellent opportunity to continue the rejuvenation of the school board by appointing someone else with fresh ideas, imagination, new energy and a solid commitment to transparency, education and fiscal stability. That’s Jake Wachtel. Measure D lost and Measure LC won. The dueling airport measures are still meaningless because the future of the Santa Monica Airport (SMO) will be decided in the courts before any local initiatives come into play. But the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association and National Business Aviation Association that were behind D and opposed LC now have a bigger headache to face: Ted Lieu. While they were promoting a ballot measure that couldn’t win, former State Senator Ted Lieu won the retired Henry Waxman’s Congressional seat that includes Santa Monica. Lieu has vowed to close SMO and now that he’s in Congress, he’s got a big bully pulpit to work from. Sheila Kuehl won the Third Supervisorial District seat by beating Bobby Shriver - not because she’s so great, but because Shriver’s campaign was weak and didn’t deliver. Ben Allen won the California 26th Senatorial District seat abandoned by Ted Lieu. Allen beat out Sandra Fluke after a hard fought campaign. Former Republican and now “independent” William E. Bloomfield, Jr. a Manhattan Beach real estate entrepreneur spent over a million bucks on Allen’s campaign through his own PAC. What’s there to say about the Santa Monica College Board of Trustees race? Boring? Yep. It looks like I’ll have lots to write about in the years ahead. Congratulations are in order to Mary Marlow and the volunteers of Santa Monica Transparency Project for expertly tracking and publicizing political campaign contributions, expenditures and tomfoolery. Lastly, Big Congrats to former Santa Monica High School Boys Baseball Coach Kurt Schwengel who will be sworn in Thursday evening as a new city Recreation and Parks Commissioner. The Personnel Commission is responsible for recruitment, examination and selection activities, classification of positions, salary recommendations, disciplinary and dismissal appeal hearings, and the development and administration of Merit Rules. A jury found a 22-year-old gang member guilty last week of murdering of two teens at a Venice park in 2011, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office announced. Deputy District Attorney Eugene Hanrahan of the Hardcore Gang Division said Michael Anthony Mariscal, 22, was found guilty of two counts of first-degree murder, three counts of attempted murder and one count each of street terrorism and possession of a firearm by a felon in case SA078033. The jury also found true special circumstance allegations of multiple murder and murder to benefit a gang. Mariscal faces a sentence of life in state prison without the possibility of parole at a hearing on Jan. 14 in Department B of the Los Angeles County Superior Court, Airport Branch. On June 22, 2011, Salvador Diaz, 18, and Allan Mateo, 19, were sitting in the bleachers in Penmar Park with a group of friends when Mariscal walked up and made gang references, according to witness testimony. Mariscal then opened fire on the group of five teens, killing Diaz and Mateo and wounding a 17-year-old in the leg, the pros-

Eaters with dietary restrictions are going to build their holidays around the side-dish sampler, it’s side dishes that form the backbone of any potluck dinner, and there are more opportunities for kitchen conversation when pans are on the stove. Daniel Tiger, Executive Chef at Del Frisco’s Grille, said his creamed pearl onions are a simple, yet classic dish for the holiday season that is easy to make and even easier to share. He said the dish evolved out of a family tradition. “Growing up, this dish was a staple for my family during the holidays, and something everyone was always excited about,” he said. “The recipe is just as delicious now as it was back then.” Tiger grew up cooking in the kitchen with his mother and he said Thanksgiving has always been a time to reflect on everything that he is grateful for. “It’s a total comfort holiday: a chance to cook, eat and spend quality time with the people who matter most,” he said. As a Chef he has spent his life around

RESULTS FROM PAGE 1 Mechur joined the board through an appointment in 2007 after the recentlyelected Emily Bloomfield announced she would step down because her family was moving to Washington, D.C. Mechur was elected in 2010. He was endorsed by Santa Monicans for Renters’ Right (SMRR), the city’s largest political party, before this election. The Daily Press asked SMRR co-Chair Patricia Hoffman if the party’s Steering Committee will weigh in on the appointment. “That will be up to the Steering Committee,” she said. “We’ve got a little time.” The vote order of the council candidates hasn’t changed since election night, with top finishers - incumbent Kevin McKeown and challenger Sue Himmelrich - widening their gap on the rest of the field. Mayor Pam O’Connor has held her ground in the third and final slot, with challenger Phil Brock now more than 700 votes behind. Measure HH appeared on its way to passing after the initial vote count - water under the bridge given that its companion measure, Measure H, had clearly failed. But Measure HH, which centers around affordable housing, is now failing and, while this is legally insignificant, the result will make symbolic waves.

food, from his start studying culinary arts at Orange Coast Community College, to his first job in a café to time as sous chef in Boston and eventually returning to Southern California. Despite his day-to-day life in the kitchen, he said the holiday is still a time to get excited about cooking. “Food is everything around the holidays,” he said. “There’s something about spending the day in the kitchen cooking with family and then enjoying your hard work together at the dinner table that really gets everyone in the holiday spirit.” For those that choose to host a holiday meal, the stress can sap some of the celebratory mood from the event. The folks at Del Frisco’s said heading out for some pre or post event drinks/appetizers/socializing can help take the edge off. The restaurant is offering a holiday special on gift cards through Dec. 31. Customers will get an additional $10 for every $100 they spend or $75 in bonus cards if they spend $500 on gift cards. Regardless, Tiger said home cooks should trust that it’s the community around the meal that make it fun. “As long as you have good eats and even better friends and family to share them with, your holiday will be a success,” he said. “Don’t forget the nap!” MATT@smdp.com

Measure H would have raised the tax imposed on the sale of million dollar homes. Measure HH would have recommended that those tax dollars be set aside for the production off affordable housing. Since the dissolution of the redevelopment agency in 2012, construction and purchase of new apartments for low-income residents has slowed to a near halt. Before the dissolution, City Hall would spend more than $15 million annually to fund affordable housing. Now the funding sources have nearly run dry. Santa Monica politics have long included a support for affordable housing. It is one of the primary tenets of Santa Monicans for Renters’ Rights, the city’s largest political party. Since 1994, more than a third of all housing built in the city has been set aside as affordable housing, according to city officials. A poll, contracted by City Hall before the election, showed narrow support for a tax increase that would support affordable housing. With a few ballots left to be tallied, HH is now 35 votes down. The Los Angeles County Registrar has until Nov. 28 to certify the results of the election. There is then a five-day period during which a recall can be demanded. The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to declare election results official on Dec. 2. DAVE@smdp.com

What’s it like to be a major college football player? BY TONY CAPOBIANCO Special to the Daily Press
UCLA Many people debate about college sports and whether or not a free college education is enough for athlete participation. The sanctity of amateurism is clouded by the reality of big business and ESPN’s Dan LeBatard describes college sports as “exploitation wrapped in education.” Many people talk about it but only few people actually know what it’s like to actually be a college athlete. Now thanks to UCLA redshirt freshman fullback Christian Wherly, you, the readers, now have an inside look at the life of a major college football player through his vantage point. Having been brought up by a “Bruin family”, all Wherly wanted to do is play football at UCLA. He contacted the UCLA coaches to help him get into UCLA as a walk-on. Those who make the UCLA football roster are among the most athletic college students in the country, so to be on PAC-12 football roster is a badge of honor for anyone. That being said, there is a gulf between the walk-ons and the thoroughbreds who were recruited by the coaches. It was intimidating at first for Wherly but he soon became one of the guys once he was acclimated into the team culture. “I thought I was in good shape coming in,” Wherly said. “Then I was quickly put into place.” “[After acclimating to the team], you wouldn’t even know who was a walk-on and who was on scholarship.” It can be easy to get lost in the vast majesty that is the UCLA campus. The main library looks like it was brought here directly from the Vatican. Any freshman couldn’t be blamed for admiring the architectural interior of the lecture hall of a prodigious university if merely getting in was the big accomplishment. Fortunately for Wherly, being a student athlete at UCLA gives him access to vast, reliable resources when it comes to academic support. If that’s not enough, an NCAA student athlete doesn’t have to be a C student until their junior year. Wherly redshirted during his freshman year and focused on the developmental aspect of being a college athlete. Wherly stayed the same size relatively, but his development was primarily cardiovascular related. As he’s witnessed, college football players usually grow in size and bulk up around 1020 pounds of muscle. They put a completely different meaning to the freshman 15. While there isn’t one specific reason why that’s the case, the best explanation is colleges have
more facilities to foster that type of growth. As a redshirt, Wherly couldn’t travel to road games with the team but he was able to make the trip with his team to the Sun Bowl in El Paso, TX. “It was like a field trip,” Wherly said. As most people understand, being a college student is a lot of work, but it’s equally time demanding to be a college athlete on top of that. Combine the two and a student athlete works harder and even longer than one with an average 9-5 job. “Being on the team is a huge time commitment,” Wherly said. “A lot of people don’t know that. A lot of people think it’s a lot easier than that because they only see us play and have fun on Saturdays, but the prep up to that is a lot of work. You can’t go out sometime when your friends are going out. You got to wake up early. You got to get your homework done. So it’s really big on time management.” Like most college athletes: Wherly wakes up at 5:30 in the morning, gets tended to by the athletic trainer at 6 a.m., morning practice, then school, time for lunch, then back to football and more school. His day is done at 9 p.m., or sometimes more if there is more homework to be done. “It’s pretty comparable to a full-time job,” Wherly said, “which I think a lot of people are surprised by.” Those who make the argument for paying college athletes scoff at the idea that a free education is enough of a trade for football participation. Wherly is a redshirt freshman walk-on with no scholarship. He pays for school and off-campus housing and his fraternity dues. He’s a fullback at the bottom of the depth chart fighting like hell to get a spot on special teams just so he can truly experience what it’s like to play college football. What do college athletes like Wherly have to gain for being on a college football team if they don’t receive the very benefits that many now don’t find to be quite as valuable as cold hard cash? As Wherly would tell you, they have everything to gain for their involvement. “I love playing football,” Wherly said. “It helped me get in [UCLA]. I wouldn’t be able to be here without football. You could say there’s a little glory aspect that’s motivating. Getting to put on the uniform and see the UCLA on the helmet is a dream come true.” Being a college athlete gave Wherly a sense of fulfillment and identity, as well as a gateway to a college education and his future career that according to him might be real estate investment.

Nov. 11, First Round: The Lady Mariners traveled 100 miles to take on the Laguna Blanca Owls in Santa Barbara last night where they walked away with a first round playoff victory. The Laguna Blanca Owls were the reigning league champions for 13 consecutive years and would not go down without a fight. The Lady Mariners took the first two sets of the match playing some of the best volleyball they’ve played all season 25-23 and 25-20. The Laguna Blanca Owls battled back in the third set defeating the Mariners by a score of 25-9. In the fourth set, the Owls were leading 17-10 but with the tough serves of Trinity Gray, the Mariners were able to get back within three where Audrey Kim’s tough serves helped tie the game. It was a back and forth battle between the two teams as the Lady Mariners held the lead with 3 match points when Nia Allen ended the match with an ace serve 28-26. Nia Allen recorded 13 kills, two aces, six solo blocks, three digs, and two assists. Chanel Smith recorded eight kills and two digs. Savannah Cragin had a season high eight kills, 18 digs, three solo blocks, and only one serving error out of 19 attempts. Paulina Redulfin had her best game all season recording eight kills and two solo blocks. Trinity Gray recorded eight digs, one ace, one kill, and no hitting errors. It was due to her tough serving that the team was able to close the gap in the score. In the back row, Libero Victoria Bachawati recorded 20 digs, no service errors, and two assists. She made some amazing saves that helped the team to win the rally. Audrey Kim also recorded 12 digs and with her serving, the team was able to get on some point runs when they needed it most. Last but not least, setter Reece Andavolgyi really helped her team with six digs, three kills, and 31 assists. The team had only seven service errors all match. Serving was one of the keys to winning against this tough offensive team. Nov. 13 - Second Round: The Lady Mariners’ season came to an end when they fell to Shadow Hills in the second round of playoffs in a heartbreaking five set match where it appeared they would dominate the match. The Lady Mariners came out strong in the first set but couldn’t close out a clear point run and fell 27-29 to the Knights. However, in the second and third set, the Lady Mariners dominated Shadow Hills beating them 25-17 and 25-18. Entering the fourth set, Shadow Hills came out with momentum leading most of the set till the Mariners had a late rush and led 21-19. Unfortunately, everything began to go in the

Knights’ favor when they took the fourth set 25-22. The Lady Mariners were unable to stop the tough serves of the Knights and fell 6-15 in the final set of the match. Senior Chanel Smith was unstoppable at the net recording 13 kills and one block. Nia Allen was on fire with 16 kills, nine blocks, one ace, and one dig. Savannah Cragin had another huge match with nine kills, one block, two aces, and 12 digs. Paulina Redulfin was a wall at the net with six blocks and eight kills. Once again, Victoria Bachawati and Audrey Kim protected the backcourt for the Mariners. Bachawati recorded 18 digs and some amazing pancake digs while Audrey recorded eight digs and no service errors despite having an elbow and leg injury. Last but definitely not least, senior Reece Andavolgyi recorded an amazing 35 assists, six digs, two aces, and one kill for her final match as a Lady Mariner. Despite the loss, the Lady Mariners entered the Div 4AA Playoffs unranked and knocked off the #7 seed Laguna Blanca in the first round. In the second round, playing Shadow Hills who is known for having a highly skilled team, showcased some of the best volleyball the Mariners played all season. The Mariners hold their heads up high and are proud of what they accomplished this season. This team will become even more exciting to watch in the years to come.

Los Angeles sheriff’s deputies fatally shoot 2 men LOS ANGELES Authorities said two men were fatally shot early Sunday after one of them raised a handgun in the direction of four sheriff ’s deputies trying to conduct a traffic stop in east Los Angeles. The incident began at 2:20 a.m. with a report from a man who said two guys he’d never seen before pointed a handgun at him from their vehicle, Los Angeles County Sheriff ’s Lt. John Corina said. The man was walking to his car in the parking lot of Paradise Bar when the alleged brandishing occurred. He got in his car to follow the suspects, calling 911 and flagging deputies he saw on the way. Corina said when deputies caught up with the car a few minutes later and tried to stop it, the passenger got out with a handgun. The driver then pulled into a driveway and exited to stand next to the other man. When one man pointed the handgun in
the deputies’ direction, all four deputies fired their guns, killing both men. A handgun was recovered at the scene, Corina said. “It looks like when they fired at the suspect with the gun, the other suspect, (who) was the driver of the car, got struck by the gunfire because he was right behind” him, Corina said. Corina said the department is waiting for ID confirmation from the coroner before releasing the names of the men. He said the man who allegedly raised the handgun toward deputies had been arrested and convicted for having brandished a firearm before. The deputies are on desk duty pending an internal investigation, per department policy, Corina said. He said the district attorney’s office and department’s inspector general are also conducting their own independent reviews. — AP

CHUCK
SHEPARD
■ Several News of the Weird stories mentioned Body Dysmorphic Disorder sufferers who sought the ultimate treatment: amputation of healthy body parts on irrationally aesthetic grounds, led by castration-desiring men. Now, 15-yearold Danielle Bradshaw of Tameside, England, also wants a useful leg amputated -- but not irrationally. Her “developmental dysplasia” caused the amputation of her useless right leg, but the resultant stress on the left one has weakened it, and besides, having taken up competitive running, she wants Oscar Pistorius-style blades instead of her current prosthesis, which slows her down. However, no hospital has yet agreed to perform the surgery, considering the leg’s continued functionality and Bradshaw’s young age. ■ (1) News of the Weird’s stuckin-chimney stories usually involve burglaries gone wrong, but when Genoveva Nunez-Figueroa, 30, was rescued by firefighters in a Thousand Oaks, California, chimney in October, it appeared only that she was unwantedly trying to visit an ex-boyfriend. (The police report diplomatically had her intent as “unclear.”) (2) In August, John Lind, 34, became the most recent frustrated admirer so infatuated with a co-worker that he was moved to ejaculate multiple times on her desk and into her coffee cup. He said he wanted her to “notice” him. ■ The most recent “segregated sidewalks” dispute in a community with a large, strict Orthodox Jewish population occurred in September in the English town of Stamford Hill, when Haredi Jews, trying to remove temptations, placed sidewalk signs (for an upcoming parade) reading, in English and Hebrew, “Women should please walk along this side of the road only” (since sect members are forbidden even to brush against people of the opposite sex except for close relatives). The Hackney council ordered the signs removed because befuddled, sometimes outraged, non-Haredis complained. ■ Florida is well-known not just for its “stand your ground” defense to the use of deadly force, but to the pro-gun interpretation given it by some judges and juries. On the other extreme, however, the legislature has enacted an unusually severe penalty for any “aggravated assault” that includes gunfire -- a “mandatory minimum” of 20 years in prison. Lee Wollard, now 59, faces a 2028 release date because he fired a warning shot into the wall of his home in 2006 to scare off his 16year-old daughter’s boyfriend, who was threatening the girl. Judge Donald Jacobsen said in court that he disagreed with his own sentence, but that his oath required him to impose it. (In a similar 2012 News of the Weird Florida domestic violence “warning shot” case, Marissa Alexander, 31, remains in prison with a release date of 2032.)
