Perhaps more than any other holiday, Thanksgiving is about tradition. The menu and tableware often vary little from year to year, and the day feels as reliable as a cozy sweater. It can also feel repetitive.
So as you honor tradition, why not bring a dose of fresh style to your Thanksgiving celebration? As interior designer and HGTV host Vern Yip puts it, just "get to the heart of why those traditions exist and what they're about. That opens up a whole new box of decor SEE DESIGNER PAGE 7

Free, drop-in mindful meditation at UCLA Medical Center To help reduce the stress of everyday life, UCLA Medical Center, Santa Monica, is hosting weekly, half-hour meditation sessions on Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m. The guided meditations, open to the public, are led by trained facilitators of the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center, recognized as one of the nation’s premier programs in mindfulness research and practice. Mindful awareness is the moment-by-moment process of actively and openly observing one’s physical, mental and emotional experiences. It has scientific support as a means to reduce stress, improve attention, boost the immune system, reduce emotional reactivity, and promote a general sense of health and well-being. “Mindful awareness allows us to experience the present moment with an openness, curiosity and a willingness to be with what is,” says Diana Winston, director of the program. “It’s an excellent antidote to the stresses of every day and invites us to stop, breathe, observe and connect with one’s inner experience.” The drop-in sessions are held in the ground-floor Conference Center at the medical center, 1250 16th Street, Santa Monica. No reservations needed. For information only, call (800) 516-5323. To learn more about the UCLA Mindful Awareness Research Center, visit http://marc.ucla.edu/

LA 2024 pledges “Transformative Games” in first presentation to Olympic family LA 2024 made its first presentation to the Olympic family this month, pledging to the 1,000-plus delegates at the Association of National Olympic Committees [ANOC] General Assembly a “Transformative Games” to guarantee greater sustainability and youth connection for future Games. Echoing IOC President Thomas Bach's comments at the General Assembly, the IOC's Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms supporting fiscally responsible bids have encouraged the City of Los Angeles to support its bid for the 2024 Games. The presentation in Doha featured remarks by Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, the only female track-and-field athlete in Olympic history to win six gold medals, Allyson Felix, LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman, LA 2024 Vice Chair and Director of Athlete Relations Janet Evans and two US IOC Members – IOC Executive Board Member Angela Ruggiero and USOC Chairman Larry Probst. All speakers are Californians. Mayor Garcetti set out LA 2024’s commitment not just to hosting an outstanding Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2024, but also to ensuring future success and relevancy for the Olympic Movement. He said: “We believe our campaign isn’t just about the Games in our city in 2024. We believe this bid is about ensuring that the Games are sustainable and relevant in every year beyond 2024 as well. This bid isn’t only about LA’s future – it’s about our collective future. We are planning a great Games in Los Angeles – make no mistake – but we’re also laying the ground work along with you for future Games. “We know that LA 2024 must not only deliver great Games, they must also deliver transformative Games. And we know that we can help transform the Games because we are a transformative city that reflects creativity and innovation – and because the Olympics are in our DNA.” Mayor Garcetti went on to describe how ensuring America “remains actively engaged in the world” was a core motivation behind LA 2024’s mission to bring the Games to the United States for the first time in a generation. He said: “I see an America that is outward-looking, ready to play its role alongside the community of nations to address our world’s most pressing challenges. Choose LA2024 and help us show a new generation of Americans that our strength is being with the world, not turning our backs to it. I believe the Olympic and Paralympic Games are the light we are seeking and that we must look to follow.” Six-time Olympic champion sprinter Allyson Felix stressed why the diversity of America and LA in particular makes the City of Angels perfectly placed to welcome – and benefit from – the world’s greatest celebration of unity in diversity: “I want to tell you about the America that I love, and the America that needs the Games to help make our nation better – now more than ever. America is diverse. We are a nation of people whose descendants came from all over the world for a better life. We’re not a nation that clings to our past, no matter how glorious or how painful. Americans rush towards the future. “Please don't doubt us. America’s diversity is our greatest strength. Diversity is not easy. Diversity is a leap of faith that embraces all faiths. And that’s why I believe LA is a perfect choice for the 2024 Games, because the face of our city reflects the face of the Olympic Movement itself.” LA 2024 Chairman Casey Wasserman pledged to “re-engage a new generation of Americans with the Olympic Movement”, drawing on the “future-focused culture of a special place called ‘California’” to connect with the nation’s 100 million young people. Janet Evans announced LA 2024’s commitment to establishing an Olympic Village Council in partnership with the International Olympic Committee and ANOC, to ensure the existing state-of-the-art facilities at the UCLA campus provide the “most personalized ever” Games-time experience for the athletes of the world. “LA 2024 is the right bid, at the right place, at the right time,” Evans said. USOC Chairman Larry Probst pledged to build on America’s “enduring engagement with and support of many NOCs around the world”, including programs which saw 576 Olympians from 103 NOCs train at universities in the United States and win 58 medals for their home countries. “Imagine how much more we can achieve together if LA is fortunate enough to host the 2024 Games,” Probst said. “This is [the United States’] third attempt to host the Olympic Games in the past ten years [and] this is the most remarkable US bid I have ever seen. We have learned many lessons from our previous bids.” Newly elected IOC Athletes’ Commission Chair Angela Ruggiero highlighted the certainty that underpins LA 2024’s vision of transformative Games: “We are not changing our city to fit the Games, we are adapting the Games Concept to fit our city – and that is true innovation. If you believe in Olympic Agenda 2020, then you have to believe in LA 2024’s Concept.” For more information visit LA24.org. — SUBMITTED BY LA2024

Ah, Thanksgiving! For many of us, it’s the favorite holiday because it revolves around togetherness and inclusiveness and preparing and eating our favorite foods— and usually doesn’t include any overt commercialism. But just because you don’t have to buy and wrap gifts doesn’t mean Thanksgiving is necessarily green, although there are lots of little things you can do to make it more that way. Menu planning is a good place to start. Hard core environmentalists would go meatless, of course, given the greenhouse gas and natural resource burden of raising livestock, not to mention animal cruelty. The non-profit farm animal advocacy group, Farm Animal Rights Movement (FARM), suggests swapping out the turkey with something meatless like Turtle Island Foods’ Tofurky, a pre-cooked tofu-wheat protein blend, Field Roast’s vegetable-based Celebration Roast, or Gardein’s Veggie Turkey Breast. For the rest of us who are still eating meat and can’t celebrate Thanksgiving without some real turkey or tenderloin, just eat less of it and fill up your plate with other healthy vegetable-based sides. If you’re vegetarian or vegan and going to someone else’s house for Thanksgiving, FARM says to let your host know you don’t eat animal products ahead of time: “You can help by asking what you can bring and how you can help prepare the meal.” Go to FARM’s Compassionate Holidays website to download one or more of the group’s holiday-worthy recipes (old-fashioned stuffing, green bean casserole, vegan gravy, creamy mashed potatoes, pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce)—all free of animal products. Another way to reduce the environmental impact of your Thanksgiving is to shop locally (to reduce the “food miles” and car-
bon footprint of your dinner) and stick to organic foods (which don’t require harmful pesticides and herbicides to grow). The Nature Conservancy suggests doing as much shopping as possible at local farmers markets and farms: “The plus for you is that local fruits and veggies usually taste better because they’ve been picked at the peak of freshness, rather than shipped from thousands of miles away” and picked before ripening. Finding foods grown sustainably and locally is as easy as steering your web browser to the LocalHarvest.org website and zeroing in on your region on the searchable local foods map. And then there’s the issue of waste. While Thanksgiving might not be as much of a retail packaging waste nightmare as Christmas, it more than makes up for that in its abundant amounts of food-related waste. Earth911 suggests buying food in bulk if you’re hosting a large crowd so as to reduce packaging waste while saving money—and to bring your own reusable shopping bags to the grocery store so you aren’t reliant on disposable paper or plastic bags. Meanwhile, Harvard University’s Office of Sustainability says that cutting disposable dinnerware, glasses and napkins will also eliminate considerable amounts of waste. Thanksgiving is a good reminder that we all have a lot to be thankful for, and it only makes sense to show your gratitude to the environment by honoring nature as much as possible—before, during and after your Thanksgiving celebration.

According to the on-site supervisor the two subjects had been contacted but refused to leave. When officers entered the stairwell they found the subjects sleeping. They saw multiple backpacks, food, electronics and clothing on the floor next to the subjects. Also found on one of the subjects was a paper packet with a crystalline substance in it. The subjects were placed under private person's arrest and transported to Santa Monica jail. Inside of one of the subjects backpack a black BMW carrier, a key fob and blank checks in the name of another person were discovered. tion of ‘This is Hunger’ to today. It is a huge undertaking and we ultimately want this experience to be both an immediate impact along with a lasting impact.” MAZON, is a national nonprofit organization began 30 years ago. Till this day they work to end hunger in the United States and Israel. One of their key strategies is to educate its synagogue partners and the larger Jewish community about hunger and engaging at the state and federal level to ensure that people have access to nutritious food. ‘This is Hunger’ is open to people of all faiths and backgrounds. Also hoping to inform and educate people all across the country about the shocking statistics of how many people go hungry. In 2015, an estimated 42.2 million Americans lived in a hood insecure household, including 29.1 million adults and 13.1 million children. This information was taken from Feeding Americas’ website. Food insecurity refers to USDA’s measure of lack of access at times to enough food for active, healthy life for all household members and limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate foods. MAZON wants to mobilize the Jewish community to take action to end hunger. The hope of the exhibit is to encourage people to raise their voice for the millions of Americans who go hungry everyday. “I want people to feel the reality of food insecurity. These stories they hear are from actual human beings. The statistics are so high, and shocking people need to know,” said Leibman. “I want people to feel engaged and to help people move out of food insecurity systems and move forward to into self sufficient way of life.” ‘This is Hunger’ is starting their tour in the Greater Los Angeles area and it may be due to the hunger statistics in the Los Angeles County. In 2014 Los Angeles County had 1,393,170 food insecure people, again provided by Feeding America. ‘This is Hunger’ launched their debut in Culver City on Nov.16 and will continue to stay in the Great Los Angeles area. They will be at Santa Monica College Nov.23 – Dec.1 The exhibit is completely free, but reservations are recommended. ‘This is Hunger’ will depart Southern California Dec.18. They will begin to travel the country, making stops in Tucson, Dallas, Baltimore, New York City, and many more. For more information visit, http://mazon.org/ . marina@smdp. com

CITY OF SANTA MONICA OFFICIAL HOLIDAY TREE LIGHTING PARTY
I hope the SMDP will publish my letter below, and hope the city council takes action to more fully enforce the leaf blower ban that voters enacted years ago. Every single day I witness not just one or two violators of the leaf blower ban in Santa Monica, but at least 5-10 violators on my morning rounds around town. I am sick of it. Not only does my car get unnecessarily dirty at the hands of the culprits, but the dust travels onto everything in its path. These violators seem to think there is nothing wrong with blowing away top soil from gardens and blowing dirt onto neighboring properties. It is a major violation of health and pollution of other people's properties. Citizens of Santa Monica helped pass this law, but for some reason, citizens have to jump through hoops to get code enforcement to take action. It just should not be this way. I know code enforcement is doing their best, but they need additional help, in my opinion. I think the patrol officers, parking enforcement, and other city officials should stop to give warnings to first time offenders, and give expensive tickets to those who are on the list of having been warned. I believe there should be a database of gardeners vehicle license plates, as well as names of gardeners taken from their photo identifications, that can all be cross referenced every time there is an enforcement action taken, so repeat violators can be fined or banned from operating in the city. To think that violators of this ban do now know the law exists is ludicrous. They all know! They snub their nose at us Santa Monicans. We should no longer take it. I am calling on the city council to change the process of reporting, to using the police and other city workers who drive around town, to be part of the enforcement action, rather than just driving by. When police cars and park rangers, etc. drive by leaf blower violators without taking sends a signal that it is okay to violate our laws and there is no consequence. This must change. Regards,

DESIGNER FROM PAGE 1
ideas." Here Yip and two other designers — Maxwell Ryan, founder of apartmenttherapy.com, and crafter Lia Griffith of liagriffith.com — offer advice on creating a memorable Thanksgiving table. BRING NATURE IN
Summer's blooms may be a distant memory, but nature can still brighten up your table. Go outside and see what's available, says Ryan: Collect pine cones, berries, vines and anything else that strikes you as beautiful. Cluster them on the table in different ways, adding other natural items like squash or pumpkins to the mix. Another natural touch: "Scoop out the middle of an apple in the same shape as a votive," Ryan says, and then tuck a votive candle into it. Do this with a half-dozen apples arranged on a dish, then light them. The candle flame warms the apples, releasing their sweet scent. As long as the top of the candle extends a few centimeters above the edge of the apple, the tiny flame remains a safe distance from the apple. Yip suggests lining up tiny topiaries down the center of the table. He asks guests in advance what their wish is for the coming year or what they're thankful for, and then he writes those words on tiny paper tags attached to the topiaries. This gets guests talking about what's meaningful to them this Thanksgiving. Amid all this natural greenery, Griffith points out that you can mix in paper flowers to create a striking centerpiece or napkin rings. She also suggests cutting an image of a bare tree out of butcher paper and hanging it on the wall. Cut leaves out of colored paper, have kids (or grownups) write what they're thankful for this year and paste the leaves on the tree branches. (You can find templates for the leaves at liagriffith.com.) FEATURE THE FOOD
This year, try adding hand-written or typed paper flags or labels to your serving

dishes, says Griffith. Beyond helping guests with food sensitivities or allergies, this lets you draw attention to the history of dishes, the relatives who made them and who contributed them this year. Consider letting the food take center stage on Thanksgiving, skipping a traditional centerpiece. Try displaying the food at various heights, says Ryan, by using cake stands or wide bowls overturned to serve as pedestals. And don't keep dessert hidden. Thanksgiving desserts, he notes, tend to look phenomenal. "It's such a shame that these beautiful cakes and pies and cookies are kind of left in the kitchen," he says. Displaying them on cake stands in place of flowers or other decorations lets guests enjoy their sight and scent throughout the meal — and serves as a reminder to save room for dessert. Just be sure, Yip says, that nothing on the table is so tall that it blocks the view of other guests. TRY FRESH COLORS
If your usual Thanksgiving palette is browns and oranges, try something new this year: Griffith suggests dressing your table in soft shades of purple with accents of metallic copper and gold. "The metallic trend is so hot right now," she says, and the warm beauty of purple is a striking backdrop for white china. CONVERSATION STARTERS
Yip likes to ask guests before Thanksgiving to tell him something special about themselves, and then use that to personalize the table. For instance, he might ask everyone to name one place in the world they've always wanted to visit. Then he orders postcards (Yip says they're easily available online) to decorate each place setting. Guests can find their seat based on the destination, and talk with other guests about their choices. Or ask everyone for the title of a favorite book, and then place those books on the table in stacks or on each napkin. Each guest can explain why that book resonated with them, and each can go home with a recommended book.

TODAY'S BIRTHDAY (Nov. 21)
By PETER GALLAGHER
Strange Brew
9
By JOHN DEERING
You're starting to see a different future than you saw before, and new relationships will be a big part of it. A move energizes and educates you in February. You'll quickly decide what to do with surprise money in April. The transformation in June happens as a result of modeling your inspiration and working hard. Aries and Virgo adore you. Your lucky numbers are: 4, 17, 20, 24 and 15.
ARIES (March 21-April 19)
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 23)
You're persuasive, mainly because you don't seem to care whether they follow your lead or not. You're doing it for your own curiosity, improvement and pleasure. They'll follow because you make it look like such a good idea.
You often grow in indirect ways, mostly by helping others get where they want to be. Just don't wait until everyone around you is perfectly squared away to invest in yourself, because that day may never come.
TAURUS (April 20-May 20)
SCORPIO (Oct. 24-Nov. 21)
You can mind your own business with the best of 'em, but of course you're not going to do that in the instance where harm could come to the defenseless. It is in everyone's best interest to look out for general public welfare.
It's not too much to ask for someone to treat you in the way you want to be treated. The person who made you feel that way was probably just ill-equipped for what you were asking. Keep trying new avenues.
GEMINI (May 21-June 21)
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)
If it's not working for you, be bold enough to ask for a change. Today is filled with potential in the form of creative tools and flexible arrangements. You can truly design your time as you wish.
It's not what you say but how you say it -- with warmth, charm, humility and simplicity. This promotes a certain feeling around you that makes people trust you and want to be near you.
CANCER (June 22-July 22)
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)
You're all for representing the real you, but which one? The wise adjust to bring the personality and approach that are most appropriate to the situation. Today's success depends on bringing the right "you" to the moment.
You're not sure what is stopping you from going forward. Are you afraid? Is something rubbing you the wrong way? Is this just about a mood? How frustrating. Reach out to a mentor. It's an important case to crack.
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)
Not everyone requires the same amount of affection, and certainly different people prefer love to be displayed in different ways. You're in such a lucky cycle now to be able to give and receive with mutually satisfying results.
Usually, if you don't know how you're going to complete it, you'll be tempted not to take it on in the first place. Today's opportunity is different. You won't get one quite like this again. It's worth a go, if only for the novelty.

Dogs of C-Kennel

By MICK & MASON MASTROIANNI & JOHNNY HART
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22) You have no idea how your supportive encouragement will make someone's day better. Your sign mate Mother Teresa said, "Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless."
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20) It will feel as though everything you are doing, you are doing quite publicly. In a way, this will keep you in check. You strive to exhibit grace in all things.

Solar Shift to Optimism The assumptions we make can be dangerously incorrect, yet there are times when we don't have the luxury of knowing for sure or being in a position to test every premise. As the sun moves from truthful Scorpio into hopeful Sagittarius, you err on the side of optimism, thinking you might be wrong but you won't be sorry.
