Lieberman keeps SMMUSD board presidency Ralph Mechur replaces Jose Escarce as vice president BY JEFFREY I. GOODMAN Daily Press Staff Writer

The Santa Monica-Malibu Board of Education played musical chairs Thursday night, although there was no music and there were no chairs removed. At its annual organization meeting, the local school district’s board re-elected Laurie Lieberman as president and chose Ralph

Mechur to serve as vice president. Their titles take effect immediately and last until next December. Lieberman, a lawyer who previously worked in the Santa Monica City Attorney’s Office, has served on the school board for about five years. She’ll continue presiding over a governing body that is currently grappling with a variety of district issues, including chemical testing

and cleanup, bond-backed improvements, achievement gaps, centralized fundraising and potential separation. Lieberman, whose two children are SMMUSD alumni, has been involved in the district since 1996. She co-chaired the district’s campaign for Measure ES, a $385-million bond for facility and technology upgrades that voters passed in 2012.

Lieberman’s term expires in 2018. Mechur, meanwhile, will replace Jose Escarce as vice president. He won the position over Richard Tahvildaran-Jesswein, the only other board member nominated for the position. Mechur was appointed to the board in January after a long meeting during which he and eight other candidates were vying for the

seat vacated by Ben Allen (D-Santa Monica), who was elected to the state senate last year. At the time, four of the six deliberating board members Escarce, Tahvildaran-Jesswein, Maria Leon-Vazquez and Oscar de la Torre - supported Mechur. Lieberman voted for real estate finance lawyer Tom Larmore. SEE BOARD PAGE 7

Cathy Gomez knows exactly what to do when she’s feeling anxious or when things in her daily life aren’t going well. She jumps into the pool. “It’s very therapeutic,” she said. “Swimming really relaxes me. I forget about anything bad that happened in my day. It lets me forget about everything. It’s really helped me a lot.” But the pool isn’t just a Zen zone for Gomez, a senior at Olympic High School. It’s also a place where she excels as a member of the Team Santa Monica swimming club. Gomez is scheduled to attend the Speedo Sectionals later this month at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park, where she will race against talented athletes from throughout the region. and friendliness to the environment are big deals in Santa Monica So, Councilman Kevin McKeown (then Mayor McKeown), councilwoman Pam O’Connor and councilman (now Mayor) Tony Vazquez trotted off to Paris, France to participate in the 21st session of the Conference of the Parties (COP21) a couple of weeks ago. COP21 was an international global conference on climate change. Last week, McKeown announced that Santa Monica had joined the “Compact of Mayors” which includes 360 cities worldwide dedicated to making steep reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and carbon emissions. According to City Hall’s press handout one of the first to come out of the new million-dollar Communications Department, “The Compact of Mayors is a global coalition of mayors and city officials pledging to reduce local greenhouse gas emissions, enhance resilience to climate change, and to track their progress transparently.” “As Part of the World’s Largest Coalition of City Leaders Addressing Climate Change, Santa Monica Demonstrates Actual Impact on Addressing, Fighting Climate Change,” the handout ballyhooed Are we really helping the environment as our politicians suggest? Or, are we just mouthing fashionable phrases? While “McKeown and Company” were in Paris protecting the environment, carbon emissions and greenhouse gasses were spewing from gasoline and diesel powered vehicles here in some of the nation’s worst traffic. Misdirected and deeply flawed municipal efforts to force us out of personal vehicles and on to buses, or to walk or ride bicycles are miserable failures. If anything, they’ve created congestion resulting in tons of unnecessary carbon and air particulates Because our policymakers are unwilling to face the fact that more than 90 percent of us use private vehicles to get to and from work, school, to shop or “just go someplace,” we’ve become an air-pollution generating machine! In addition, City Hall’s environmental claims are defeated by the city’s development policies. Using “housing” as a wedge for driving more development has resulted in hundreds of new apartments in the development queue leading to more demand for resources and pollution. A ten unit apartment building with 12 or 14 habitants that’s replaced by a 40, 50 or 60 unit building (with added ground floor retail space) occupied by 75 to 100 tenants is going to use a lot more water no matter how “low-flow” its shower heads are. Our aging water and sewage infrastructure also contribute to water waste and pollution. Yet, City Hall’s priorities are about developing housing for people who want to move here rather than cleaning up our own backyard. McKeown himself also said (at a recent Santa Monica for Renters’ Rights meeting) that he thinks renters should be exempt

from any penalties arising out of increases of water use that violate the city’s own guidelines for cutbacks. How is that going to incentivize saving water and protect the environment? It all sounds a bit hypocritical to me. EXPO’S FIRST “HIT”

The extension of the Expo Line into Santa Monica had its first accident, Thursday. An 18-wheel stake bed truck turned in front of a Metro test train on Colorado Avenue at Seventh Street. A Metro test train operated by a conductor was travelling westbound slightly behind the truck on dedicated tracks located mid-roadway. At the intersection of Colorado and Seventh, the truck driver turned left against posted signs prohibiting such turns and was struck broadside by the train, resulting in damage to the truck and causing the Metro train to derail. Luckily, the injuries incurred be the truck driver, the train conductor and two other people on the test rain appeared to be minor. Expect many more of these accidents, especially with Expo running at grade from roughly Nineteenth Street and Colorado to the Fourth Street at Colorado terminus. The decision by Santa Monica’s City Council to place Expo down the middle of Colorado as opposed to an elevated alignment over Olympic Boulevard (and all the intersecting north/south side streets) favored by the Expo Construction Authority and Metro will go down in history as one of the worst decisions ever made in this city. The Metro Blue Line that runs for a mile or two at grade on Washington Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles is one of the most dangerous/deadliest stretches of light rail right-of-way in the United States. I predict that Santa Monica’s Expo line will soon be at the top of the “hit” list because many injuries and fatalities here are inevitable. SANTA WALKS SURVEY UNSCIENTIFIC

Last Monday, in a guest column (“Lives are worth a few minutes” Dec. 7, Page 5) Grace Phillips founder of Santa Monica Walks - a citizen group that promotes walking - took issue with my earlier column (“Pedestrian Action Plan filled with rhetoric,” Daily Press, Nov. 16, Page 5) written about the city’s laughable and problematic methodology for “enhancing the pedestrian experience.” After zinging me, Phillips wrote that Santa Monica Walks wants a more consumer friendly, walkable city and listed all the usual pro-pedestrian wishing points that framed a public opinion survey her group conducted two years ago. It was designed to elicit specific responses like advocating for wider sidewalks, motoring restrictions and to generate endorsements for pedestrian enhancements and approaches. It did nothing to get honest answers to questions about a pedestrian’s real needs because Santa Monica Walks and similar groups are only interested in advocacy. nizable faces of the environmental movement, sent ripples throughout the political world when he released his enormously successful book, “An Inconvenient Truth”, back in 2006. His environmental leadership dates back much further, however: He was traveling the country warning about the impending climate crisis in the early 1990s, and as Vice-President under Bill Clinton, Gore was a key proponent of U.S. and international participation in the Kyoto Protocol, an ultimately unsuccessful effort to align international efforts on greenhouse gas emissions reductions back in 1997. After losing his bid for the Presidency on a technicality in 2000, Gore left politics and devoted himself to raising awareness about climate change through speeches, activism and the publication of “An Inconvenient Truth”-as well as production of the followup documentary film of the same name, which took home an Oscar for Best Documentary. With the publication of “An Inconvenient Truth”, Gore launched two non-profits committed to making climate change a political priority in order to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, which he consolidated into the Climate Reality Project in 2011. Gore still devotes about half his time to climate campaigning, recently addressing negotiators at the COP21 climate talks in Paris about how to enlist everyday people as “global citizens” in efforts to rein in greenhouse gas emissions. Gore has also devoted lots of his time since 2000 on another form of green: making money. While it’s well known that his investments since he lost the White House to George W. Bush have turned Gore into a rich man with a net worth in the hundreds of millions of dollars, less is known about the

methods employed to make this money. Generation Investment Management (GIM), the firm he founded in 2004 with exGoldman Sachs executive, David Blood, practices an entirely new form of capitalisma model they hope the entire world economy will one day share. Instead of religiously following the highest short-term revenue strategy, GIM’s “sustainable investment” approach takes into account environmental, social and economic damage. Though not a new idea, here is the kicker: They are enormously profitable, with a 10-year average of 12.1 percent yearly increase, ranking them second of over 200 firms analyzed by the consulting firm Mercer. While the current capitalist system focuses on short-term gains based on market demand, the sustainable-capitalist model also adds effects on environment and society. For example, Coca-Cola is enormously successful under the traditional system. However, Generation sees it as unsustainable, as its history of environmental conflict and its links to obesity will eventually result in health concerns, leading to a crash like the tobacco industry. Similarly, Generation views petroleum, while one of the largest industries today, as a bad bet over the long haul for similar reasons: The more oil that’s burned, the bigger the reaction will be against it. The new approach that allows Generation to actually profit from this idealistic mentality is their ability to see ethical investments as an advantage, rather than an inherent negative. This revolutionary model is one of the newest trends in capitalism, and just might be its savior. Consuming at an unsustainable rate cannot continue for much longer, so adapting to this new system could be one of the most important legacies of Al Gore. petition while preparing for possible future opportunities in the collegiate ranks and at the junior national level. “She’s one of the top swimmers I’ve seen, and I’ve been coaching for about 7 years,” said Jimmy Dabney, an associate head coach for Team Santa Monica. “She has a lot of ability and natural talent. She’s a racer. She’s very competitive and is not scared of the moment. She always has her eyes on the moment. ... “The more you compete with someone at a certain level, the more you improve on your own standard. So it’s a good opportunity to be there and race and see how she looks.” Gomez has looked at home in the water for more than a decade. When she was 5 years old, she said, she jumped into the pool at her uncle’s swimming practice. A few lessons later, she was a regular. Gomez splashed onto the swimming scene at Santa Monica High School, where she started her prep career. As a freshman, she qualified for the CIF Southern Section championships in the 500-yard freestyle after clocking in at 5 minutes 3 seconds during the Ocean League finals. She also earned a section bid in the 100-yard butterfly race and was a member of the Vikings’ qualifying 200-yard medley relay squad.

As a sophomore, Gomez placed 11th at the section finals in the 500 free with a time of 5 minutes 5.55 seconds. “I love the feeling of competing with different people and different teams and knowing what you’re capable of with other people around,” she said. Gomez has trained with Team Santa Monica for about four years, and she currently squeezes eight practices in Culver City into her weekly schedule. She said it helps that she gets more individual attention on schoolwork at Olympic High School than she did at Samohi. “The environment feels very comfortable,” she said of Olympic, the Santa MonicaMalibu district’s continuation campus. “Samohi is really big, there are a lot of students and teachers and the teachers can’t focus on you one-on-one. At Olympic, you have more access to the teachers. They really give their time and energy to focus on you, and they will help you to the extent that they can.” Gomez has become a leader for the other swimmers in her cohort, Dabney said. She wants to study sociology in college and become a social worker. For now, though, Gomez is trying to enjoy her time in the pool as a competitor. “All the excitement, getting nervous, having butterflies when you’re about to dive into the water - I love that feeling,” she said. Craig Foster backed parent activist Jon Kean. Mechur rejoined the board after failing to earn a seat in last year’s election, when he tallied more than 11,000 votes but finished fifth in a race for four vacancies. Mechur, a professional architect, had served on the school board before his recent nomination. He joined the seven-member entity as an appointee in 2007 and reclaimed a seat through election in 2010. His board term ends next December. “We are fortunate to have seven dedicated elected officials serving our community,” district Superintendent Sandra Lyon said in a press release. “Ms. Lieberman and Mr. Mechur will provide excellent leadership this coming year as we embark on numerous initiatives including our equity review, technology installations and facility improvements.” Several board members were chosen to

San Francisco - A third winter-like storm in a week brought rain and strong winds to much of Northern California and snow to the Sierra Nevada on Sunday. Sheets of pouring rain made for treacherous driving. One person was injured in an accident on Highway 101 that blocked all lanes near San Rafael, north of San Francisco, the California Highway Patrol said. Forecasters said showers and thunderstorms are expected throughout the day, and officials are reminding residents to drive slow, saying there is debris and flooding on the freeways. The CHP said it is handling several collisions in the San Francisco Bay Area. After a lull Saturday, the system moved into parched California overnight packing precipitation, strong winds, lightning and hail. The latest storm will dump slightly less rain in the state than the previous systems — with the San Francisco Bay Area and the San Joaquin Valley expected to get up to about half an inch, National Weather Service meteorologist Nathan Owen said. “We’ll see a very similar storm to what we had the last round with less rain. But we’re expecting a good bit of wind for this system,” he said. The National Weather Service issued a strong wind advisory for the San Francisco Bay Area that will stay in effect through Sunday night, saying wind with gusts of 40 to 50 mph were forecast for the area. Winds delayed arriving and departing

represent SMMUSD beyond the district. Tahvildaran-Jesswein will serve a stint in the Los Angeles County School Trustees Association, which provides board members with training, information and networking opportunities, according to the county’s education website. Foster was nominated to serve on the California School Boards Association’s delegate assembly. He was also selected as the district’s representative to the Los Angeles County Committee on School District Organization. As the local school board’s main Malibu voice and the founder of Advocates for Malibu Public Schools, Foster has used his board seat to rally for the creation of a separate Malibu district. The board has generally expressed conditional approval of a split, although momentum appeared to slow this month following analysis of updated financial projections.

flights at the Oakland and San Francisco International airports, officials said. The weather service warned that dry trees could topple and bring down power lines. “Driving may be difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles,” it said. Pacific Gas and Electric Co. said several there were several power outages in the Bay Area and that power was restored to hundreds of affected customers a few hours later. Central California could also see winds gusting up to 55 mph, and higher peaks in the Sierra Nevada could see up to two feet of snow, the weather service said. In Southern California, chains were required Saturday on several roads leading to the Bear Mountain and Snow Summit resorts after several inches of snow fell on the San Bernardino Mountains. A storm Friday dropped 6 inches at higher elevations and brought rain, hail and thunderstorms elsewhere. The National Weather Service said daytime temperatures in the mountains will stay in the 30s through the weekend and that more snow is expected before Monday. The Southern California coast remains under a high surf advisory through Sunday, with unpredictable waves topping 10 feet. Forecasters have said a strong El Nino weather system could drench California and other parts of the West in the coming months. However, Johnny Burg, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Seattle, said he didn’t believe the latest Northwest storms were related to El Nino, a warming in the Pacific Ocean that can alter weather worldwide.

Officers were dispatched to a disturbance in the 400 block of 23rd Street. When they arrived they noticed a house under construction and several construction workers preventing a subject from coming further onto the property. The subject, later identified as Nico Aguayo, said he used to work on the property and he was unhappy with the way the construction was going. The superintendent told Aguayo he was not allowed on the property, but he refused to leave. Aguayo bumped his chest to the superintendent’s chest several times in an attempt to intimidate him. The superintendent (victim) said he wanted Aguayo arrested for the assault and battery. When the officers attempted to arrest Aguayo, he refused to comply. He was eventually arrested for the assault and battery and resisting arrest. Aguayo, homeless, had bail set at $20,000.

Sudoku Fill in the blank cells using numbers 1 to 9. Each number can appear only once in each row, column, and 3x3 block. Use logic and process of elimination to solve the puzzle. The difficulty level ranges from (easiest) to (hardest).

GETTING STARTED There are many strategies to solving Sudoku. One way to begin is to examine each 3x3 grid and figure out which numbers are missing. Then, based on the other numbers in the row and column of each blank cell, find which of the missing numbers will work. Eliminating numbers will eventually lead you to the answer. ■ In November, lawyer Michael Petersen of Appleton, Wisconsin, was ordered by county judge Philip Kirk (in a sentence for contempt of court) to inform every client he acquires in the following 12 months that Petersen is a “crook,” “cheat,” “thief” and “liar.” Kirk concluded that Peterson had lied about a plea deal with the prosecutor and created phony documents for backup, leading a client to plead guilty to armed robbery when the prosecutor said there was never such a deal. According to the Appleton Post Crescent, Kirk (after dressing down Petersen in colorful language) told him, “I want you to have as much business as a pimp in a nursing home.” ■ Pastor Thom Miller, 60 (of the United Christian Ministries International in Mansfield, Ohio), told

an international news crew recently that he had “married” his 19-year-old pregnant girlfriend (Reba Kerfoot), but that some in his congregation disapprove -- because Miller is already married (though his incumbent wife, Belinda, 44, apparently does approve). Said Belinda, “Thom is the love of my life and Reba is the blessing of my life, so it all works.” Said Miller, “Sexually I have no preference and look forward to my time alone with both wives.” (Bonuses: (1) Miller was an enforcer for organized crime in Cleveland until he “found God” in prison. (2) He is annoyed that Ohio recognizes samesex marriage but not polygamy. (3) The local Mansfield News Journal was apparently scooped on the story but is now catching up.)
