THE WINTER TEMPERATURES ISSUE
Bumblebee loves Santa Monica buildings BY DAVID MARK SIMPSON Daily Press Staff Writer

ART: Bumblebee has several works in the area including a new mural on Wilshire Blvd.
Drought, plastic bags prompt new California laws DON THOMPSON
WILSHIRE BLVD On Wilshire Boulevard, seven blocks from the beach, a giant boy is straining through his binoculars to see the ocean — an increasingly hard feat in Santa Monica. The boy was created by an artist who goes cryptically by the name Bumblebee Loves You (he would not give his real name for this article) and commissioned by equally cryptic development group Pacshore Partners. Pacshore is adaptively re-using unique, old buildings — in this case an Art Deco remnant at 631 Wilshire — and filling them with California-based shops and restaurants — in this case Mendocino Farms, Sidecar Doughnuts, and Juice Served Here. Bumblebee Loves You, whose mural on Fairfax Avenue in Los Angeles was placed sixth on L.A. Weekly’s list of the “10 Best L.A. Street Art Murals of 2014,” got his start messing around with images on Photoshop. He worked his creations into street art, both legal and illegal, before landing pieces with the Youth Homelessness Project in West Hollywood in 2011. He’d paint huge sleeping children inside of allies for the nonprofit. “It looked peaceful but the meaning behind it was very serious,” he said. The giant kids became his go-to subject. “I think people really started to take notice of my work and started talking,” Bumblebee said, “and big landowners, developers, whatever, they like it because they’re very site-

CITY HALL City Council honored two members of the Santa Monica community who’d died at the ages of 35 and 41. Kate Levy, 35, who died suddenly in a car crash in November, was remembered for her fight against homelessness as a senior administrative analyst in City Hall’s Human Services Division. “Kate was an enthusiastic employee. She embraced her responsibilities with great passion and enthusiasm,” said Mayor Kevin McKeown at council’s meeting. “She was committed to alleviating the suffering of people experiencing homelessness. She brought together people in different departments and areas of expertise to do whatever it took to

specific the work and there’s always a story behind each one, yet they’re really playful and they don’t necessarily have to be so serious all the time.” Bumblebee Loves You has another piece in Santa Monica, on the outside of a building at 1640 Fifth Street (where the Daily Press is located) depicting a girl on a surfboard. The boy on the Wilshire building is her brother, he said. “My whole thought process behind this was that the beach was really close, this kid is so big,” he said. “When I was a kid, it takes all day to even get to the beach from where I’m from and by the time I get to the beach you have to walk across 300 yards of sand to get to the water. So this kid has that feeling.” Philip Orosco, managing partner at Pacshore Partners, said they picked Bumblebee for just that feeling. “When I was first presented with the portfolio of Bumblebee I found that his pieces had a sense of innocence that would fit well with the culture of Santa Monica,” he said. “Then we decided to go big.” Despite his multi-floor size and his binoculars, the boy, who’s not yet been named, might have trouble seeing the ocean. “It’s funny cause there’s this building right over there and every time I go up to the fifth floor on this lift, I’m just like, dang, if that building wasn’t there I’d be able to see the sunset, at least the sunset,” Bumblebee said. “But they have the view.” The mural is scheduled to be completed in January.

Selfie’s Choice AS THIS IS MY LAST COLUMN OF 2014,
I hope you’ll indulge my venting about my pet peeves that have only gotten worse in 2013. (A peeve for a pet? That’s a few notches below a hamster.) Recently I was watching on YouTube a powerful scene of Meryl Streep’s from “Sophie’s Choice,” a 1982 film starring Streep as Sophie Zawistowski. It was based on the novel by William Styron. (And no, this isn’t one of my peeves but I’m getting to them. “Peeve” is such a funny word when you think about it.) In the story, upon her arrival at Auschwitz, Sophie is forced to choose which of her two children will be gassed and which will proceed to the labor camp. Styron’s Pulitzer-Prize winning book was based on his brief rendezvous in 1947 with Sophie, a survivor of Auschwitz. In my modern-day “Selfie’s Choice,” Amber is forced to choose which of her two bikini selfies she should post on Instagram. (Do you think an “Amber” will ever be nominated to the Supreme Court?) Okay, maybe Amber’s choice doesn’t yield the heart-wrenching impact of Sophie’s but perhaps the stunning shallowness comes from the times in which we live. Then again, maybe as a culture we just love shallow. Can you say TMZ? It’s said that the worst of times often produce the greatest humanity. (Actually I just made that up.) Adolph Hitler was one of the biggest monsters in history. As comedian Ricky Gervais points out, he also ruined the name Adolph. In schools all around the world there’s Justin’s and Jason’s, Fritz’s and Frederic’s but no Adolph’s. (Who do you know named Adolph?) Hitler and the fascists caused untold destruction and loss of life. And yet great art, film and literature came from it. (Go to YouTube and type “Sophie’s Choice,” to see Meryl Streep’s flashback scene, in a movie which earned her a Best Actress Oscar.) I would think that what we’re going through now are pretty horrible times: Iraq and Afghanistan, Isis’ beheadings, the Taliban slaughtering 145 students and teachers in Pakistan, and endless bloodletting in Gaza. As Mark Twain commented, “Man is the only animal that goes forth in cold blood and calm pulse to exterminate his own kind.” (If he lived now, Twain would have a field day!) If the sorry state of humanity is pet peeve #1, #2 is considerably less significant but
annoying nonetheless. It’s these inane selfies people send to one another with extraordinary urgency. Even the word “selfie,” could it be any more narcissistic? Narcissism is fast becoming a national epidemic that we’ve helped send viral around the world. Even President Obama has a penchant for selfies. A little more than a year ago, he posed for one with Danish Prime Minister Helle Thorning-Schmidt and Britain’s PM David Cameron at Nelson Mandela’s funeral no less! (Michelle had the good sense to glare menacingly at them all.) Next on my pet peeve list are people who drive and text. I’m against capital punishment, but for texting-drivers I might be open to change. I’ve often been in the crosswalk, or should I say in the cross-hairs, while some fool is texting as he/she drives a 4000 pound car right at me. The text/driving habit is so pervasive gruesome public service announcements on TV, with carnage seemingly from a Tarantino movie, beg people not to text and drive. And yet there’s more than ever. I swear, every time I set foot in a crosswalk texting drivers appear out of nowhere like in a B-horror movie. Not to sound like the late grammarian Edwin Newman, but another pet peeve is the deterioration of the English language, including spelling and even penmanship. Who ever writes longhand anymore? Check your handwriting, you may have forgotten how. Because of the two T’s, texting and Twitter, everything is abbreviated to 140 characters. When I was in grade school my late father used to joke at the dinner table, “F-u-n-e-x?” (For “Have you any eggs?”) He thought it was hysterical. I thought it was corny. Now it’s cyber speak. My last pet peeve is the inexplicable and growing lack of civility in our culture. For example, in our recent City Council campaign our sitting Mayor, Pam O’Connor, was booed at candidate forums. It was unseemly. As for me, from time to time I get angry reader emails that begin, “Hey, Jerk.” Not even “Dear Jerk.” Okay, I’m done venting. (For 2014, that is.) I’ll end with a hopefully uplifting holiday wish… “F-a-gr8- nu-yrs!” (At least my dad might have thought it was funny.) If he isn’t too busy kvetching about his pet peeves, Jack is at facebook.com/jackneworth, twitter.com/jackneworth or jnsmdp@aol.com.

Regarding the open seat on the Board of Education left by Ben Allen, I’m glad to see that Jake Wachtel is running for the spot - he was a terrific PTA President at Grant Elementary who worked tirelessly for everyone. He’s also been a teacher and really has his priorities in place - I would completely trust Jake with decisions that bear on our child’s education.

The 2014 Sammies are here THEY’VE FINALLY ARRIVED. MY ANNUAL
awards for the great, middlin’ and downright hideous in Santa Monica during 2014. The City Council voted to advance the proposed 12-floor “Plaza at Santa Monica” and voted for the 767,000 sq. ft. Bergamot Transit Village, AKA “the Hines Project,” earlier in the year. The Planning Commission praised a proposed 330,344-square-foot, seven floor, mixed-user at 500 Broadway. Despite resident opposition, planning staff is advocating for mega-sized neighborhood activity centers, opportunity centers and overly large Tier 3 developments on major boulevards. It’s a comedy of errors that replays year after year after year. The Planning Commission, City Council and city planning staff once again share the “Urban Ugly” Sammy for assisting with and approving some truly hideous developments. Nobody in the planning department can explain mysterious changes to the Land Use and Circulation Element (LUCE) documents like the conversion of over 100 residential properties to commercial use and the insertion of messaging in the draft Zoning Ordinance Update that called for regulations to “enhance the City’s fiscal health.” Most of us know how these behind closed door changes came about. In the meantime, the “Got Me” Sammy goes to the Planning and Community Development. The 2014 “Need More Congestion” Sammy goes to the planning department’s transportation mismanagers. Every day, more street space is appropriated for “pie in the sky” schemes that give preference to bicycles (outnumbered by cars/trucks by 100 to 1) and downright dangerous pedestrian plans. For decades, planners and politicians alike have deliberately done nothing to improve our motoring experience in the mistaken belief we’ll give up driving and walk, bicycle or ride the unreliable BBB. Big Blue Bus (BBB) management gets the “What Were You Thinking?” Sammy for its new bus stops. Bad design, bar stool seats, mushroom sun shades that don’t shade and clumsy placement make for a complete mess. BBB split the Number 3 route so riders have to take two buses - the “3” and “3M” when going from north of Wilshire Boulevard to the Southside and vice-versa. Packed busses still leave riders waiting at stops. Again, in 2014, BBB wins the “Worst Customer Service” Sammy, hands down edging out parking operations by a bumper. I’m still enthusiastic about Evan Meyer from the Beautify Lincoln (Boulevard) group for his work with streetscape beautification through murals and street art. Over the last year, a number of world class works have gone up on local walls from internationally-known street artists, thanks to Meyer. Again, this year, Meyer gets my “Thumbs Up” Sammy. The “Enough, Already” Sammy goes to the people who want to close Santa Monica Airport. Two competing ballot measures in the November election were a waste of time, energy and completely unnecessary. The future of the airport is in the courts and will
be for some time. And, if you seriously think that current airport land will become one big park, you’re kidding yourself, planning to run for City Council or probably believe in flying pigs. Santa Monica voters automatically won the “Smart Vote” Sammy when they turned down Measure H that would have established a real estate transfer tax of $9 per thousand dollars. The revenues generated would have gone to build more low income, public housing. It’s good that voters are realizing that raising taxes to fund affordable housing - the vast majority of which goes to families recruited from outside Santa Monica - isn’t their best interests. The “Sucky Neighbor” Sammy for 2014 goes to Palihouse Hotel at Washington Avenue and Third Street for just being a terrible and inconsiderate neighbor. Administrators at the Santa MonicaMalibu Unified School District came very close to winning the 2014 Sammy for “Fiasco of the Year.” First, there was the rush to judgment involving teacher/wrestling coach Mark Black’s confrontation with a student suspected of selling drugs in his classroom. Then, came the flap over the firing of winning Santa Monica High boys baseball coach Kurt Schwengel. Schwengel’s termination was as messy as it gets with political game playing, rule bending, cronyism and favoritism running amok with the hiring of Schwengel’s replacement. However, the “Fiasco of the Year” Sammy goes to retiring City manager Rod Gould. He reversed his decision to hire Elizabeth Riel as the city’s public relations chief and spokesperson literally days after he signed a contract with her and after a certain councilwoman complained to him about Riel’s past political activity allegedly targeting said councilwoman. Then, a Downtown insider was quickly offered the position and accepted. With much stink in the air, Gould announced his resignation as City Manager effective end of January. School teacher, Marcy Winograd convinced herself that ponies at the Main Street Farmers Market pony ride were being abused, so she launched a hysterical, factchallenged campaign to shut it down. “I am no longer silent in the face of animal cruelty disguised as benign children’s entertainment,” pony-whisperer Winograd told the press even as animal welfare/veterinarian groups and city officials found her charges baseless and totally without merit. Nevertheless, four members of City Council decided not to renew Tawni’s Ponies and Petting Farm, Inc’s contract for next summer. This circus deserves two Sammys: the Sammy for “Righteous Nuttiness” goes to Winograd while the “Gutless Leadership” Sammy goes to Kevin McKeown, Ted Winterer, Gleam Davis and Tony Vazquez who voted to can the ponies based on fabrications and then suggested replacing them with “nonanimal-related, children-oriented activities” Happy New Year, everyone. Hoping for a better 2015. BILL can be reached at mr.bilbau@gmail.com

What’s New in Medicare for 2015? GOOD
NEWS
FOR
PEOPLE
WITH
Medicare in 2015: Part B costs will remain the same as in 2014. Medicare Part B helps pay for doctor bills, outpatient care, durable medical equipment, and other items. It requires a monthly premium and an annual deductible. I’m happy to report that Part B costs for 2015 will be identical to 2014: $104.90 a month for the premium (for most beneficiaries), and $147 for the deductible. Most people with Medicare don’t pay any premium for Part A, which helps covers hospital care. But for those who do, the 2015 premium is dropping, from a maximum of $426 per month to $407 per month. The annual deductible is going up a little, from $1,216 in 2014 to $1,260 in 2015. Once you pay the deductible, Medicare covers your first 60 days of hospitalization with no coinsurance. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, people with Medicare no longer have co-pays for a long list of Medicare-covered preventive health services. Preventive shots and screenings are intended to keep you healthy and to detect disease in the earliest stages, when it’s most treatable. Medicare’s preventive health services include vaccinations for flu and Hepatitis B; screenings for colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer; screenings and counseling for diabetes and depression; cardiovascular disease screenings; and counseling to help you stop smoking or abusing alcohol. In addition, you can get a one-time “Welcome to Medicare” visit with your doctor, during the first 12 months you’re enrolled in Part B. During this visit you and your doctor can review your medical and social history, and your physician can recommend specific preventive screenings for you, if needed. Medicare also now covers an annual “wellness” visit with your doctor. This visit is intended to develop or update a personalized plan to prevent disease or disability based on
your current health and risk factors. Another benefit of the Affordable Care Act is that it’s gradually closing the “donut hole,” or coverage gap, in Medicare Part D, the prescription drug program. The coverage gap begins after you and your drug plan together have spent a certain amount for covered drugs. In 2015, once you enter the gap, you pay 45 percent of the plan’s cost for covered brand-name drugs and 65 percent of the plan’s cost for covered generic drugs until you reach the end of the gap. However, not everyone will enter the coverage gap because their drug costs won’t be high enough. (There’s a full explanation of the coverage gap in the “Medicare & You” handbook for 2015, which is online at: http://www.medicare.gov/Pubs/pdf/10050.p df.) The gap is scheduled to be completely closed by 2020. Finally, Medicare has expanded its “Blue Button” feature to provide better access to your Medicare claims and personal health information. With the Blue Button you can download 12-36 months of claims information for Part A and Part B, and 12 months of claims information for Part D. This information can help you make more informed decisions about your care and give your healthcare providers a more complete view of your health history. You can find the Blue Button at www.MyMedicare.gov. Once you’ve used the Blue Button, there are a variety of health applications and services to analyze your health information. Visit www.bluebuttonconnector.healthit.gov to learn more about these useful tools and how to protect your health information once it’s in your hands. (EWG), a non-profit dedicated to protecting human health and the environment through research, education and advocacy, launched its “Dirty Dozen Guide to Food Additives” in November 2014 to educate consumers about which food additives are associated with health concerns, which are restricted in other countries, and/or which just shouldn’t be in our foods to begin with. EWG hopes the new guide will help consumers avoid unhealthy foods and also influence policymakers to develop more stringent rules for food producers moving forward. According to EWG, more than 10,000 food additives are approved for use in the U.S., despite potential health implications. Some are “direct additives” deliberately formulated into processed food; others are “indirect,” that is, finding their way into food during processing, storage or packaging. Either way, some have been linked to endocrine disruption, heart disease, cancer and a wide range of other health issues. Topping EWG’s list are nitrates and nitrites, both typically added to cured meats (like bacon, salami, sausages and hot dogs) to prolong shelf-life and prevent discoloration. “Nitrites, which can form from nitrates, react with naturally occurring components of protein called amines,” reports EWG. “This reaction can form nitrosamines, which are known cancer-causing compounds.” The group reports links between nitrite and nitrate consumption and cancers of the stomach, esophagus, brain and thyroid. The World Health Organization considers nitrites and nitrates to be probable human carcinogens; California’s Office of Environmental Health Hazard Assessment is now considering a similar designation.
Interestingly, some nutritious foods like spinach and other leafy vegetables contain nitrates naturally, but EWG says that “human studies on nitrate intake from vegetables have found either no association with stomach cancer or a decreased risk.” Another troubling but nevertheless common food additive is potassium bromate, used to strengthen bread and cracker dough and help such items rise during baking. But potassium bromate is listed as a known human carcinogen by the state of California and a possible human carcinogen by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. Animal studies have shown that regular exposure to potassium bromate can cause a variety of tumors, is toxic to the kidneys and can even cause permanent DNA damage. Most of the potassium bromate added to foods converts to non-carcinogenic potassium bromide during the process of baking, but small but still significant unconverted amounts can remain, putting eaters everywhere at risk. EWG would like to see the U.S. government follow Canada’s and the European Union’s lead in banning the use of potassium bromate in foods altogether. Other additives on the Dirty Dozen list include propyl parabens, butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), propyl gallate, theobromine, diacetyl, phosphates and aluminum. Many artificial colors can also cause health issues, reports EWG, as can thousands of “secret flavor ingredients” that food makers add to foods without oversight in the name of protecting trade secrets. For more information on these foods and how to avoid them, check out EWG’s free “Dirty Dozen Guide” online. FROM PAGE 1 dum. Those are among more than 900 bills passed in 2014 by the Legislature and signed by Gov. Jerry Brown, who also vetoed 143. Most of the laws take effect Jan. 1. That includes a bill allowing driver’s licenses for people who are in the country illegally, another that will influence the 2016 ballot by modernizing California’s century-old initiative process and others addressing everything from teacher tenure to massage parlors. Also taking effect with the new year is a ballot initiative approved by voters in 2008 that restricts the confinement of egg-laying hens, breeding sows and veal calves. The state’s biggest ongoing story of the year led to a series of bills designed to have a lasting effect on California’s water supply. In the midst of a third year of drought, the Legislature and governor closed a gap in the state’s water oversight that dated to the Gold Rush days, passing and signing bills to regulate groundwater use for the first time. Although the drought is beginning to ease with early rain and snow, Brown’s signing of SB1168, SB1319 and AB1739 by Assemblyman Roger Dickinson, DSacramento, and Sen. Fran Pavley, D-Agoura Hills, ends the state’s pump-as-you-please policy. It also brings California’s groundwater rules in line with those of other Western states. Specifically, the bills require water districts and other local entities to develop plans to manage their groundwater and allow the state to intervene if necessary. Brown’s call on Californians to reduce water use by 20 percent led some residents to run afoul of their homeowner association rules. Lawmakers responded by approving bills that prevent associations from punishing residents who cut back on water use, allow plants to die or install drought-resistant landscaping. “There are moments in legislative time when folks sort of rise to the occasion and we get something done on water,” said Felicia Marcus, chairwoman of the State Water Resources Control Board. She also noted that lawmakers worked together to craft a bipartisan, $7.5 billion water bond measure that voters approved in November. It will let the state expand storage and develop water management plans. With the new year also comes a first-inthe-nation standard for investigating sexual assaults on college campuses. SB967, by Senate President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon, D-Los Angeles, requires “an affirmative, conscious and voluntary agreement to engage in sexual activity,” meaning silence or a lack of resistance can no longer be deemed consent. The California State University and University of California systems already adopted similar consent standards, which will now apply to all public and private post-
7
secondary schools that receive state money for student financial aid. The statewide plastic bag ban, SB270 by former state Sen. Alex Padilla, D-Los Angeles, will be phased in starting in July at large grocery stores and supermarkets, unless opponents force a delay while voters consider repealing it. It could be May before the secretary of state’s office - headed by newly elected Padilla - determines whether the industry gathered enough valid signatures to place a referendum on the November 2016 ballot. Proposition 2, the 2008 ballot initiative restricting the caging of certain farm animals, goes further than any other state when it is coupled with a law signed by former governor Arnold Schwarzenegger that extends the space requirements for egg-laying hens to out-of-state suppliers, said Wayne Pacelle, president and chief executive officer of The Humane Society of the United States. The measures helped trigger “a cascade of legislative and corporate reforms” nationwide, he said. Other laws taking effect include: AB215 by Assemblywoman Joan Buchanan, D-Alamo, which makes it easier for school districts to fire abusive teachers. The bill gained traction as a compromise between teachers unions and some education-reform groups after a headline-grabbing case of misconduct in Los Angeles highlighted how difficult it can be to remove problem teachers. The Los Angeles Unified School District paid elementary school teacher Mark Berndt $40,000 to drop the appeal of his dismissal after he was charged with spoon-feeding semen to his students and other lewd acts. SB505 by Sen. Hannah-Beth Jackson, DSanta Barbara, which requires law enforcement agencies to develop policies that encourage officers to search the state’s database of gun purchases as part of routine welfare checks. The bill was prompted by sheriff ’s deputies failure to detect the danger posed by a man who weeks later embarked on a deadly rampage in May near the University of California, Santa Barbara. AB1147, by three Democratic lawmakers, allows local governments to revoke the license of any massage parlor that violates the law. It is intended to make it harder for massage parlors to operate as fronts for prostitution. AB2048 by Assemblyman Brian Dahle, RBieber, gives property owners in fire-prone areas a few breaks on paying the state’s annual $150 fire-prevention fee. It eliminates a requirement that the fee will increase each year based on inflation, lowers the 20 percent late payment penalty to 10 percent and permits exemptions for homes destroyed by natural disasters. SB926 by Sen. Jim Beall, D-San Jose, gives sex-abuse victims more time to pursue criminal charges against offenders. It raises the age ceiling from 28 to 40 for childhood sexual abuse victims to file criminal complaints.

Box Office: ‘Hobbit’ wins Christmas, ‘Big Eyes’ flops LINDSEY BAHR AP Film Writer

14/15 SEASON

Jack Lemmon Returns JA 7- FEB 1 JAN
A NEW MUSICAL PLAY ABOUT A WORLD FAMOUS DAD AND HIS SON.
LOS ANGELES Audiences had their pick of genres over the Christmas weekend, but despite a host of fresh arrivals, splashy holiday fare like “Unbroken” and “Into the Woods” proved no match for “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.” The final installment in Peter Jackson’s trilogy marched to the top spot once again with an estimated $41.4 million take across the weekend ($54.5 including Christmas day earnings), according to studio estimates Sunday. Universal’s World War II epic “Unbroken,” took second place with $31.7 million from the weekend, bringing its domestic total to $47.3 million from its first four days in theaters. “We’re all thrilled,” Nikki Rocco, Universal’s president of domestic distribution said of the Angelina Jolie-directed drama. “It’s a testament to how great this movie is. I’m so happy that America found out about it.” Added Rentrak’s senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian: “The story of Louis Zamperini really offered a nice alternative for moviegoers who weren’t looking for a fantasy world, a musical or a family film.” Disney’s musical “Into the Woods,” boasting a star packed cast and a PG rating, came in a close third with $31 million, and $46.1 million across the four-day. It replaced “Mamma Mia” as the biggest opening for a screen adaptation of a Broadway musical ever. “To be able to take (Stephen) Sondheim and (James) Lapine’s work and make it available to a mass audience? It’s a great holiday gift in and of itself,” said Disney’s distribution Executive Vice President Dave Hollis. The rest of the top five was populated by holdovers “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb” and “Annie” and which earned $20.6 million and $16.6 million, respectively, in their second weekend in theaters. “Their opening numbers didn’t really set the world on fire, but, as we thought, they would play well over the Christmas holiday,” Dergarabedian said. Sony’s “The Interview,” which was also available for rental and purchase online, ultimately took in $2.8 million from 331 theaters since its opening on Thursday, with $1.8 million of that coming from the weekend.
“I’m so grateful that the movie found its way into theaters, and I’m thrilled that people actually went out and saw it,” said writer, director and star Seth Rogen in a statement. “We are very pleased with how it is doing both theatrically where we are seeing numerous sell-outs across the country, and online where it remains at the top of many charts” added Sony’s president of worldwide distribution Rory Bruer. Earnings from digital rentals were not made available. Other weekend debuts include Paramount’s $25 million crime drama “The Gambler,” which took seventh place with a middling $9.3 million from 2,478 theaters. The Weinstein Company’s “Big Eyes,” earned only $2.97 million over the weekend from 1,307 screens and $4.4 million from the four-day. The haul is a career low for Tim Burton compared to his other wide release openings. In limited release, Clint Eastwood’s factbased Iraq war drama “American Sniper” opened in four locations, taking in a phenomenal $610,000. The staggering $152, 510 per-theater average is second this year only to “The Grand Budapest Hotel.” Ava DuVernay’s Martin Luther King Jr. drama “Selma,” meanwhile, opened in 19 locations to $590,000 over the three-day weekend for a solid $31,053 per-theater average. The film expands nationwide on Jan. 9. Dergarabedian thinks that less impressive debuts, such as awards hopeful “Big Eyes,” could find an audience in the coming weeks. “It’s just very, very crowded out there,” Dergarabedian said. “The audience wins, though. There is so much choice out there. If you can’t find a movie to your liking in this lineup, then you just don’t like movies.” Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Rentrak. Where available, the latest international numbers are also included. Final domestic figures will be released Monday. 1. “The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies,” $41.4 million ($89.2 million international). 2. “Unbroken,” $31.7 million ($2.7 million international). 3. “Into the Woods,” $31 million ($1.6 million international). 4. “Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb,” $20.6 million ($30.3 million internaSEE MOVIE PAGE 9

Dozens of residents, business-owners, and city workers showed up to talk about Cramer. Many speakers mentioned his infectious smile and his laugh. Several members of the Santa Monica Fire Department and Police Department told stories about Cramer’s interaction with officers and fire fighters. One woman, noting his welcoming nature and positivity, called Cramer an ambassador for the promenade. “Brandon was never one to be sad,” Starr said at the memorial, as music from street performers played in the distance, “neither would he want anyone to feel that way. SOLUTIONS TO YESTERDAY’S PUZZLE
There are many strategies to solving Sudoku. One way to begin is to examine each 3x3 grid and figure out which numbers are missing. Then, based on the other numbers in the row and column of each blank cell, find which of the missing numbers will work. Eliminating numbers will eventually lead you to the answer.

■ (1) NBC’s “Today” show reported in December the “heartbreak” parents are feeling when they learn that the supposedly unique name (“wonderful, distinctive, rarely heard”) they had given their infant in the last year or two (e.g., “Mason,” “Liam,” “Lily”) actually appeared on BabyCenter’s annual list of most popular names of 2014 (6th, 3rd and 8th, respectively). (2) After hearing tenants’ complaints, the New York City Council is now considering a regulation requiring landlords to post notices if a common area or amenity is unusable for 24 hours or more -- which applies of course to elevators and laundry rooms, but would also extend to any air hockey or foosball facilities in the building. ■ In a 2012 incident in Cleveland (where a white police officer recently shot to death a black teenager holding a toy gun), 13 officers chased two unarmed black homeless drug users at high speeds and fired 137 shots at the pair, killing them. (A car had supposedly backfired, suggesting a gunshot at the cops.) As a result of “communication” failure, the 13 were placed on limited “desk duty” for 16 months and subjected to continuing investigation. Recently, nine of the 13 officers sued the city, charging that nonblack officers are historically and illegally disciplined more harshly for mistakes when victims are black. ■ Big Crime: (1) Four officers responded in Tayport, Scotland, in July to arrest Irene Clark, 65, who spent 48 hours in jail -- after committing the crime of swatting her husband with a magazine while arguing over TV programs (causing a paper cut). (2) Christopher Saunders, 38, pleaded guilty in North Devon, England, in November to possession of 0.09 grams of marijuana (value: 14 cents). (3) Keith Shannon, 44, was sentenced (two years’ probation) in Letterkenny, Ireland, in November for twice being caught swiping “tester” packets of aftershave at a Boots store (value: 2 cents each). ■ The ear has a “G-spot,” explained Santa Clara, California, ear, nose and throat surgeon Todd Dray, and thus the moans of ecstasy that Vietnamese “ear pickers” reportedly elicit from their clients might well be justified. A San Jose Mercury News reporter, dispatched to Ho Chi Minh City in January (2011) to check it out, learned that barber shop technicians could sometimes coax “eargasms” (as they removed wax) by tickling a certain spot next to the ear drum served by multiple nerve endings and tissue paper-thin skin. Said one female client, “Everybody is afraid the first time, but after, it’s, ‘Oh my God!’” Said one Vietnamese man, returning home after a trip abroad, and who went immediately from the airport to a “hot toc” parlor for a picking, “(This) brings a lot of happiness.”
