Twilight Happiness SANTA MONICA'S SUMMER HEARTBEAT
ell before the sound of the first note swims into the salt-tinged air at this summer’s Twilight Concert Series, Jay Farrand was serving as a member of the civilian task force that contributed to early discussions about Santa Monica’s pioneering Wellbeing Project. The outdoor shows and the city study were not directly related, at least initially. But when the results of the groundbreaking initiative were released as the Wellbeing Index earlier this year, the Santa Monica Pier administrator couldn’t help but notice a powerful connection. On several of the major metrics detailed in the project, which aims to understand and improve happiness and livability for Santa Monica residents, the Twilight Concert Series delivers the goods. “It’s the icon of community wellbeing. You not only have the beauty of the natural environment, but it reminds us to admire this historical environment, and it’s an opportunity for neighbors and friends to connect in an organic way. And it’s free” Farrand says.
W
The Wellbeing Project, launched with the help of a $1-million grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies, was created to define the aspects of a thriving city and collect data regarding how Santa Monica fares on those criteria. The ultimate hope for the project, officials say, is that the information gathered is used to guide city agencies and community groups on best practices for improving the lives of the people they serve. One tried-and-true practice? A longrunning concert series with free admission, marquee musical acts each week and a setting that brings together people of all ages for entertainment and merriment. The Twilight Concert Series champions the study’s community pillar, for example, enhancing the relationships between Santa Monicans as well as their bonds with their neighbors in the region. As noted in the Wellbeing Project, a community “with strong connections among its inhabitants can flourish in good times and withstand the tough ones.”
For Mayor Kevin McKeown, the concert series exemplifies the vibe that characterizes his ideal Santa Monica. "Our community-building concerts on the Pier go back decades before the Wellbeing Project was conceived and the first data gathered, but the Twilight Concert Series is exactly the antidote to isolation and alienation we’re looking for,” he said. “It’s hard to feel alone and disconnected when you’re part of a dancing crowd hearing good music for free at the beach!” The concert series also hits on the pillar of place, which the Wellbeing Project highlights as having physical, social, environmental and economic components. The weekly shows encourage Santa Monicans to break from their daily routines, providing vital relief considering more than a third of the study’s respondents reported spending leisure time outside less than once a week and 55 percent reported spending leisure time in community or public space less than once a week. Even the Wellbeing Project’s learning pillar is activated through the Twilight
Concert Series, which exposes audiences to new artists, genres and cultures. This summer’s lineup features everything from indie pop (Real Estate) and New Orleans jazz (Rebirth Brass Band) to rockabilly (JD McPherson) and dancehall reggae (Sister Nancy). The fact that it’s all available at no cost to attendees underscores its value to the community as an accessible experience. Farrand says he believes the benefits of the Twilight Concert Series are felt in Santa Monica well beyond each summer’s final encore. Much like the incoming Expo light-rail line, forthcoming bike share program and ongoing water conservation efforts, the shows support a vision of a city that promotes livability, connectivity and wellbeing. “The Wellbeing Project provides a framework and a checklist,” Farrand says. “When we’re thinking of projects or programs or expenditures, we should be asking, ‘How many boxes does this tick? How is this going to impact community wellbeing?’ It should be the overarching goal in everything we do.”

Morris Day returns to his onetime adopted hometown n December of 1984, Morris Day found himself in Los Angeles. Earlier that year, the Minneapolis born vocalist had co-starred in Prince Rogers Nelson’s debut feature film Purple Rain, and excitement from the Summer Olympic Games still hung in the air. Day came out to Santa Monica to stay in the Miramar Sheraton Hotel on Ocean, known today as the Fairmont Miramar. “It was heaven for me,” said Day, “I had a room on the 10th floor overlooking the ocean. It was 70 degrees, people were wearing shorts and t-shirts, and I called my mom in Minneapolis and it was 70 degrees below zero. I called my mom and said ‘I’m not coming home’” Day said, laughing. Sometime around his twenty-eighth birthday, Day bought a place on Ocean and moved to live in view of the Pacific. Morris Day got his start in Minneapolis, singing in Prince’s first band “Grand Central.” As Prince grew, The Time was created as a street-wise funk alternative to Prince’s more soulful R&B sound. Day, a funky and fabulous singer with an eye for fashion, was chosen as the Time’s lead vocalist. The group’s selftitled album, The Time, was released in 1981, and included “Get It Up,” “Cool,” and “Girl.” "It was such an innocent time," Day reminisces. "We were just doing our thing, talking the way we talked and dressing the way we dressed. Bringing our personalities to the record. It was us being us.” Soon after, The Time recorded three more albums, including What Time is It? (1982) and 1984’s Ice Cream Castle (which included the hit “Jungle Love.”) That year, Morris Day and the Time were cast in Purple Rain, which captured the exploding Minneapolis music scene at its peak. Following these albums, Morris Day launched his solo career, releasing The Color of Success, Daydreaming, and Guaranteed. Combined sales of Morris Day's solo work and The Time exceeds 10 million units. Most recently, Morris contributed a cover of Rockwell's "Somebody's Watching Me" for the Haunted Mansion soundtrack and gave an unforgettable performance in Kevin Smith's Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (2001), in which Day and the band performed a soaring "Jungle Love" finale. Day’s music has always been influenced by his environment. “Growing up in Minneapolis was a unique experience,” said Day, who credits the radio’s mix of rock, funk, and pop with the creation of The Time’s unique sound early on. Living in Santa Monica, the proximity to the ocean served as
I
inspiration to help Day write songs. “I wrote some really good stuff when I lived by the water,” reminisced Day. Morris Day & The Time will kick off the 2015 Twilight Concert Series with a performance on the Santa Monica Pier on July 9th. Day says he is excited to experience Santa Monica as a performer. “Out on the pier and on the water…[it’s] familiar territory but from a different perspective,” remarked Day in an interview. For Day, performing across from a place he once called home is “going to be cool and unique.” Day looks back on his time in Santa Monica fondly. “I had a good experience,” said Day, “Nice restaurants, nice scenery...I was at the beach everyday that I could.” Day’s time living in the city had added creative benefits as well. “Absolutely we are influenced by certain areas that we go,” added Day, who said that in Santa Monica “you go home with a different outlook on your music.” As stage backed by Pacific Ocean, the Santa Monica Pier provides plenty to be excited for. “To be able to perform with a backdrop like that - it’s just inspirational,” added Day, “It helps you do what you do and helps make it better.” As for the show, Day looks forward to the harmony between the energy of his band’s performance and the enthusiasm of the crowd. “It’s a cool community, so with a cool band like ours rippin’ it up down there it should be an awesome,” said Day, who pitched his band as “rock’n’rollers, wrapped up in pimp suits, laying down the funk.” Concert goers can expect an energetic performance, said Day. “We put on a show, we don’t just play music...Them folks better be ready when they step on that pier,” said Day, demonstrating his bantering bravado for which he is known, “We’re going to be partying so hard the fish are going to be jumping out of the water.”

MORRIS DAY & THE TIME
Born in Minneapolis, Day had a flair for fashion. Inspired by photographs of his grandpa in zoot suits, a true fashionista was formed! Day went to school with Prince Rogers Nelson and sang in Prince's first band Grand Central. Prince grew as an artist and so did the opportunity around him. The Time was originally created as Prince's alter-ego to be seen as the cool, street-wise funk band contrasting Prince's more soulful R&B sound. After looking at several lead vocalists, Prince wanted someone with mad talent so he cast his high school friend - the funky, the fabulous Morris Day. Soon after, the world as introduced to the prolific Morris Day and the Time. They were cast in Purple Rain which captured the exploding Minneapolis music scene at its peak. Morris Day burst onto the public scene with the group's self-titled album, The Time, which included "Get It Up," "Cool,"
and "Girl." Soon after the world was introduced the prolific Minneapolis music marvel, the group went on to record three more albums, including What Time Is It? (featuring the hits "777-9311," "Wild and Loose," "Walk," and "Gigolos Get Lonely Too") and Ice Cream Castle, (which included the hit "Jungle Love"). After three albums Morris Day launched his solo career, releasing three albums: The Color of Success, Daydreaming, and Guaranteed. Combined sales of Morris Day's solo work and The Time is in excess of 10 million units. When asked, where have you been? Day smiles his smooth Cheshire (mischievous) grin. "I've been waiting for just the right time to launch a new project. I felt that Hip Hop has had such a strong hold on the industry the timing needed to be perfect. I've continued to record over 100 songs and to tour. With new artists sampling old-school music, my phone started ringing off the hook. I knew it was the right time." REAL ESTATE with HIPPO CAMPUS The most collaborative Real Estate record to date, Atlas was written by Martin Courtney, Matt Mondanile, Alex Bleeker and Jackson Pollis while cruising through the Arizona desert and during a presser in Madrid, in a practice room in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and in an attic in the band's hometown of Ridgewood, New Jersey. It was recorded in the sum-
mer of 2013 in Chicago with Tom Shick (Sean Lennon, Low, Cibo Matto) at Wilco's loft studio where new member Matt Kallman (formerly of Girls) joined the fold on keyboards. Over the course of five years of collaboration and friendship Courtney, Matt Mondanile and Alex Bleeker have honed a masterfully focused aesthetic feel and unique sense of atmosphere in their work, a kind of subtle American impressionism that belies their relatively small discography. Theirs is a subtly inimitable sound that achieves a unique timelessness in its assured identity. Nevertheless, Atlas does not represent a resting on the laurels of Days. “We wanted to make a cleaner, more well-rehearsed record that reflected the way we've come together as a live band over the last few years”, explains Courtney. “Basically we wanted to make a better record than Days without changing the general structure of who we are as a band.” The songs of Atlas still unfurl in iridescent, warm webs of Courtney and Mondanile's guitar, they're still anchored by Bleeker's nimble bass and they're still patient and deliberate - ebbing and flowing, frequently building to moments of euphoric release in a way that feels perfectly organic. Likewise the band's searching, human songwriting still illuminates the quiet, important moments of life in exquisitely minimal language. Intimate and spare, these ten new songs unfold as one impossibly warm, enveloping suite - conjuring quiet, latenight drives down wooded highways,
rural rambles with friends (and maybe a love interest) on the sunniest afternoons of the year, and hazy summer evenings spent alone, thinking back to those times and the people who were with you for them. You can catch glints of Galaxie 500, Little Wings, Luna, Neu, Nick Drake, and Pavement, and also the art of Fairfield Porter, Milton Avery, and Albert York. It's precise, taut and uniquely American, cut through with a melancholia that can feel variously heartbreaking and newly wise.

WEEK 3 ~ JULY 23
¡CUBANISMO! with CHICANO BATMAN Jesús Alemañy , founder of Latin orchestra ¡Cubanismo!, came to fame as a brilliant 15- year old trumpet player for the iconic Cuban son group Sierra Maestra. The all-star ¡Cubanismo! orchestra plays sizzling dance tunes full of swaggering horn charts and wild polyrhythms that recall the vintage bigband son sound, traditional rumba, chacha and lesser known danzon and pa’ca rhythms arranged in the descarga (jam) tradition developed by Cuban jazz players of the ‘40s. The expression cubanismo designates something specifically Cuban, or unique to the island and not common to the general Spanish culture of Latin America. Utterly different from the genre known as Latin jazz, ¡Cubanismo! features danceable music from beginning to end,
celebrating the legacy of Cuban music in other dance styles from around the world. The Cuban son, which dates back to the turn of the century, is the root of much of the up-tempo international pop music, from African soukous to New York salsa. ¡Cubanismo! takes you on a journey to the dancing heart of Latin music. The 15piece orchestra of Cuban all-stars showcases the bright tropical blasts of Cuba's hottest dance music. Led by Jesús Alemañy, the brilliant young trumpeter formerly of Sierra Maestra, the band features famed conguero "Tata" Güines, Orlando "Maracas" Valle; saxophonist Yosvany Terry from Los Terry, his family's Afro-Cuban group; the great Cuban bassist Carlos del Puerto; and tres player Pancho Amat. The all-star percussion lineup boasts the venerable "Tata" Güines and Roberto Vizcaino on tumbadoras (conga drums), and the alwaysinventive timbalero Emilio del Monte. Together, they punch out an irresistible blend of freewheeling dance tunes. "Powerhouse all-star touring band that plays a repertoire of traditional Cuban music from a variety of genres."

It's so insanely visceral, you feel like it's going to explode your speakers. If I'm listening to that in the car, I find myself having to brake suddenly. I can listen to that and it makes me feel like I'm 20 feet tall. And the feeling of joy I get from that record is always going to be the real push behind trying to make music.” For his most recent record, McPherson wanted to maintain raw power while also capturing the more mysterious side of the records he loves. To that slightly spookier end, he enlisted as a collaborator Mark Neill, known for his work as a producer and engineer with versed-inthe-past acts going back to the Paladins in the 1980s, but, most recently, for recording The Black Keys and Dan Auerbach-a friend of McPherson's who co-wrote the new album's “Bridge Builder.” Talking up one of the freshly minted tunes, “Bridge Builder,” McPherson describes it as being “the psychedelic Coasters.” That no such thing really existed prior to this album doesn't deter him. “This is something I actually talked about with Mark at the beginning of the record: 'I want to make a '50s psychedelic record!'” McPherson certainly doesn't begrudge the attention that Signs & Signifiers unexpectedly brought him. “If it hadn't been for the 'North Side Gal' video, this probably never would have caught on,” he says, recalling the fame he found on
YouTube even before Rounder picked up his indie release. “That's how we found our label and found our management. I was still teaching school, and here I am with got this video that's like a million hits. I'm like, what? I had no plans to quit my job. Luckily, I lost it.” A middle school art department's loss was Rounder's and the rock world's gain. Since the debut album came out, McPherson has played for a lot of genre nerds who pick up on every single influence. But he and his band have also opened for acts ranging from Bob Seger (getting a standing ovation at an arena in Detroit, the headliner's hometown) to the Dave Matthews Band to Nick Lowe to Eric Church (who sought him out to write some songs together). For a Halloween night 2014 show at the Forum in L.A., super-fan Josh Homme, one of McPherson's biggest supporters, handpicked him to open for Queens of the Stone Age. These may not all seem like natural pairings, but the music is primal and melodic enough that, after a few minutes, it never fails to make sense even to audiences with the least of expectations and musical educations.

Prior to starting on Cut Copy's most recent album Zonoscope, Ben Browning dug into his trusty mind-hole and began penning tracks for a solo release, culminating in the new 12-inch EP which is to be released by Cutters Records. I Can't Stay is the lead single, taken from Browning's forthcoming EP on Cutters records. It opens with an almost calypso guitar lead, before opening up into bouncing bass driven clubpop, the likes of which wouldn't have been entirely out of place on the recent Cut Copy album. The vocal is trademark Ben Browning: delicately strained melodic and harmonic stylings, with a seeming fragility which belies its true versatility. The talents of Architecture In Helsinki's Gus Franklin and Haima Marriott were enlisted to add production and shimmer, with Franklin even laying down livedrums on the final recording. Meanwhile, Cut Copy's own Dan Whitford reached into his collection of vintage synths to provide keyboard programming, producing some of the the classic keyboard tones herein. What's that you say? You wanna dance? Never fear, the single is
rounded out by two energetic remixes of the lead track I Can't Stay. Cutters' own Knightlife, who has made spacey disco bliss his stock in trade, has transformed this into and epic, infectious melodic house gem. And DFA's Juan Maclean opts for an energized version, more faithful to the original, much like classic expertly finessed dance mixes of old.
DMA’S DMA'S is the musical project of Johnny Took, Matt Mason & Tommy O'Dell - three best friends from Newtown, Australia. Having cut their teeth playing with a number of different bands in Sydney's inner west over the years, the trio began writing and recording demos in Johnny's bedroom around 2 years ago. Set on taking their time to hone their craft and sound, the three friends soon found themselves with a library of nearly 40 demos. Finally content with the identity that the songs had taken, DMA'S released their debut single in February this year in the form of a track simply titled 'Delete' (along with a short film by director Mitchell Grant that was filmed in Johnny's bedroom - the same location
that the band recorded and produced the track) and despite having never played a show under this moniker, the reaction was instantly overwhelming as critics and fans alike proceeded to jump on board - including Dave Rowntree of Blur (who awarded them his record of the week on XFM, comparing them to Arctic Monkeys & Oasis), Triple J and NME Magazine. It would seem that word continued to quickly spread around their hometown of Sydney - illustrated by the band's first show drawing over 450 punters and leaving another 100 or so unable to get in! From that point DMA'S have hit the touring circuit of Australia, selling out multiple rooms around the country and getting the call up to played the respected Splendour in the Grass Festival - sharing the stage with acts such as Interpol and Future Islands.

Ditch the ride for a stress-free time BIKE IT, WALK IT OR BUS IT TO TWILIGHT CONCERTS veryone knows that parking blows in Santa Monica, but you don’t have to give up on the city by the sea. Just leave the car at home and walk, bike or bus it down to the Santa Monica Pier for this summer’s edition of the famous landmark’s 31st annual Twilight Concert Series. The most convenient way to play is by hopping on your beach cruiser, using pedal power. It’s a great way to lose weight, stay in shape and avoid traffic jams Downtown. The city by the sea has an extensive network of bike lanes; a Downtown Bike Center complete with showers, lockers and a repair shop; as well as a free bike valet just south of the pier for those attending the concerts. It’s right off the beach bike path for easy access. If you are riding from the northern side of town, Montana Avenue to Ocean Avenue is a great route with plenty of scenery. You may want to use one of the walk bridges that connect Palisades Park to the beach bike path or take it all the way to the pier’s entrance at Colorado Avenue and walk it down to the valet. If you are coming from the south, try Main Street, Neilson Way (which turns into Ocean Avenue at Pico Boulevard) or

Those coming from the east side of town by bike should take bike lanes on Arizona Avenue or Broadway for a stressfree ride. Both streets hit Ocean Avenue, which will lead you straight to the pier entrance. Always remember that a white head light and red back light are required when riding at night and that it is illegal to ride on sidewalks or fail to stop at all traffic signals and stop signs. Helmets are not required for adults, but they are recommended. You just might need that brain of yours. And don’t forget to bring a trusty, strong U-lock to secure your cycle if you decide to stop off for some snacks before the shows. From demented kiddie tune collaborations with the legendary Kim Fowley (songs like 'Jell-O' and 'Plastic Raincoats In The Pig Parade' were written with Fowley in his hospital room during his recent battle with cancer), to beatific, windswept pop ('Put Your Number In My Phone', 'Dayzed Inn Daydreams'), scuzzpunk face-melters ('Goth Bomb', 'Negativ Ed'), and carnival dub psychedelia ('Dinosaur Carebears'), pom pom could very well be Ariel Pink's magnum opus. “Although this is the first “solo” record credited to my name, it is by far the least “solo” record I have ever recorded,” said Ariel Pink. pom pom is Ariel Pink's third studio album for 4AD, following his Haunted Graffiti releases Before Today (2010) and Mature Themes (2012).
CLASSIC ROCK
WEEK 8 ~ AUGUST 27
JEFFERSON STARSHIP with PURPLE MOUNTAINS MAJESTIES RUSTY'S EAC WINNER
Paul Kantner founded Jefferson Airplane in 1965. The Airplane were the biggest rock group in America during the 1960s and the first San Francisco band to sign a major record deal, paving the way for other legends like Grateful Dead & Janis Joplin. They headlined the original Woodstock Festival in 1969 and like The Beatles with whom they are critically compared, lasted a mere seven years ... though their influence and impact on rock music continues well into the 21st century. In 1974 Mr. Kantner created Jefferson Starship and again enjoyed chart-topping success. Paul, & Jefferson Airplane were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, the same year as Pink Floyd. Jefferson Starship, the name created by Paul for his 1971 solo debut “Blows Against The Empire” recording, has endured 40 years as one of rock's most legendary bands. That recording was the first and only to ever be nominated for literary science fiction's Hugo Award. Co-founder David Freiberg also started the legendary Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Fillmore era San Francisco band who often shared the bill with The Dead & The Airplane). David is a world famous singer, producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He was also a member of Jefferson Airplane, and co-wrote one of Jefferson Starship's alltime biggest hits, “Jane” - which he performs. From 1973 to 1978 Donny Baldwin was with the "Elvin Bishop" Band. During this time he toured and recorded six albums, which included the #1 hit single, "Fooled Around and Fell In Love". From 1981 to 1989, Donny was a member of Jefferson Starship. In January 1994, he joined the Jerry Garcia Band. Chris Smith joined Jefferson Starship in 1998, having toured with The Supremes and Lou Bega. Chris has gone on to place music in film and television includ-

ing the #1 rated series “CSI.” In 2000 he assumed the seeming impossible task of playing piano and (synth) bass simultaneously … a feat only duplicated by the legendary Ray Manzarek of The Doors. Cathy Richardson joined Jefferson Starship in 2008, and anchors the historic 'role' made famous by Grace Slick. She is an award winning music artist, graphic artist, and clothing designer. Her professional credits include fronting her own successful rock band, producing and releasing seven albums on various indie record labels. She was nominated for a Grammy Award for Art Direction of her band's 2003 release, “The Road to Bliss,” which also received two DIY Awards (Do It Yourself in Film, Books and Music) for Album Art of the Year and Producer of the Year. Jude Gold is an acclaimed lead guitarist joining in 2012 for a 10 country, three-month international tour - replacing longtime lead player Slick Aguilar who recently underwent a liver transplant. Jude also tours with contemporary stars Miguel Migs, Stu Hamm and JGB (Jerry Garcia's Band) before that. He is also a “professor” at the acclaimed Musician's Institute in Los Angeles.
