A soul for food, a taste for soul L

istening to the breezy and bouncy tunes of neo-soul crooner Mayer Hawthorne, you wouldn’t necessarily pick up on the fact that he’s obsessed with food. He sings about love and good times, pain and heartache. He’s not apt to pour his heart out about, say, cereal. But the 37-year-old musician and producer apparently loves to chow. His official Twitter biography refers to him as a “Grammy nominated phenomenal food eater,” and his listed location on the social media site is “Waffle House.” His website informs fans that he’s a sucker for breakfast, whether it’s waffles, turkey sausage or pancakes ... for dinner, of course. And so it came as little surprise that, as Hawthorne was preparing to kick off this year’s Twilight Concert Series at Santa Monica Pier, he couldn’t take his mind off the tasty treats he’d track down after the show. “Looking forward to kicking off the pier summer series and then getting an ice cream sundae!” he said, and you get the sense that he wasn’t kidding. Hawthorne’s culinary cravings made even more sense after his recent visit to Florida Avenue Grill, a longstanding Southern restaurant in Washington, D.C. Hanging on a wall in the establishment is an artistic rendering of Hawthorne, a plate of butter-adorned hotcakes resting in front of him. After all, the diner and the singer both serve sumptuous soul — the former in edible form, the latter of the musical variety. But Hawthorne’s tastes — and sound, for that matter — aren’t easily bound by genre labels. Indeed, when it comes to creating music, the artist formerly known as Andrew Mayer Cohen is a mix-and-match kind of guy. Raised on hip-hop and in an era that encouraged him to dig through crates for vinyl records, Hawthorne injects numerous styles into his catchy blend of poppy neosoul. Take a slow-rolling ballad like “Crime” from his 2013 album “Where Does This Door Go,” a track that provides a unique backdrop for a verse by critically acclaimed rapper Kendrick Lamar. After the pulsing, twangy intro floats seamlessly into the first verse, an ethereally groovy refrain sums up the song’s mood: “We just wanna party / Just wanna rock all night / Don't wanna hurt nobody / No need to be uptight.” The lyric is fitting for Hawthorne’s outdoor appearance in Santa Monica: He performs with panache, his stylish presence exudes cool and his music is seemingly meant to create a let-loose vibe. And it’s a vibe that permeates his wideranging catalog. On his 2009 debut, “A Strange Arrangement,” he weaves effortlessly from songs like the speedy, hornfilled “The Ills” to somber, slower tracks like “Green Eyed Love.” On his 2011 release “How Do You Do,” he plucked rapper Snoop Dogg for a feature on the funk-filled “Can’t Stop.” And he channels his inner Shuggie Otis throughout “Man About Town,” which was released on Vagrant Records earlier this year. A self-taught vocalist who is comfortable

on numerous instruments, Hawthorne’s latest album showcases his smooth versatility and knack for making songs that stick in your mind like maple syrup on your fingers. And, on the lustful “Breakfast in Bed,” he finally embraces his love of food: “Let’s

order breakfast in bed / Just me and you and Mr. Sunshine / Let’s order breakfast in bed / And leave the ordinary world behind.” His departure will likely be brief, though. Because the French toast isn’t going to stay warm forever.

housands are drawn to the sunny skies of the Santa Monica pier by prominent headliners of the Twilight Concert Series, but organizers have spent considerable time and effort to ensure the entire experience, from start to finish, is something special. The TCS experience now includes an improved stage, interactive entertainment installations and expanded food offerings with each step taken towards the goal of creating a complete entertainment experience on the Pier. This year, organizers said they've worked on extending the entertainment value by paying specific attention to the opening acts. “The opener is critical because it's the first thing you hear and sets the mood, and is also often a discovery moment for the audience so it allows people to take home a new experience they've never had before,” said Pier Executive Director Jay Farrand. “Giving talented up-and-comers a platform for a larger audience, and giving our audience an opportunity to get up close with tomorrow's talent is a win-win in terms of connecting community and culture.” Santa Monica Councilman Kevin McKeown said the joy of uncovering new music was a fond memory from his former career as a radio host.

“When I was working in rock radio, there was no thrill greater than discovering a song or a band that no one else knew yet, but that found its audience through my airplay,” he said. “Santa Monica's Twilight Concert Series has been famous over decades for exposing new acts on a summer's beach evening, adding the excitement of discovery to the experience of live music on our Pier. Any new band can be proud to say, 'We played the Santa Monica Pier' - the Pier is both an icon and a badge of arrival.” Farrand said the Pier is a unique venue. The atmosphere encourages a fun and appreciative crowd and he said because it's a free show, people aren't standing with their arms folded waiting to be impressed and get their money's worth. According to Farrand the Pier employs several strategies for maximizing the impact of the opening acts. “Sometimes we try to pair classic acts with contemporary ones to create a cross-generational narrative that allows fans of both to discover something new, e.g. Mavis Staples and the Suffers, and Ohio Players and Holy Ghost!” he said. “Other times we use the popularity of the headliner to showcase an up-and-comer who is doing a new twist on that genre to broaden fans' palates, e.g. Unknown Mortal Orchestra and Steady Holiday, and Mayer Hawthorne and Alina Baraz.” Opening acts take the stage at 7 p.m. with headliners following at about 8 p.m.

2016 OPENING ACTS ALINA BARAZ Alina Baraz, a 21 year old Los Angelesbased singer and songwriter. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, and the first child in her family born in America, Alina was introduced to music at a young age by her classically-trained parents. She collaborated with electronic musician Galimatias and the pair released the EP Urban Flora last fall. PORCHES The 27-year-old singer and songwriter Aaron Maine has released a wealth of material on a number of influential labels. Performing as Porches he has become a magnetic live presence while playing out in New York, gainRAGING FYAH

ing the notice of discerning listeners and labels alike. February 2016 marked the muchanticipated release of Pool, his debut fulllength for Domino and a major step forward for him - as an evolving singer/songwriter, and as a nascent producer. DAY WAVE Jackson Phillips has only been creating music under the moniker Day Wave since Fall 2014. A departure from his synthheavy work as one half of electro-pop duo Carousel, Day Wave crafts dreamy, lofi, guitar-driven indie-pop that is already turning heads. Phillips writes, produces, and performs all of his songs, and tracks each instrument himself on an old reelto-reel. RAGING FYAH Regarded as one of Jamaica's most promising young acts, the band Raging Fyah makes music that is tethered to their island's enduring, much emulated roots rock reggae tradition yet is distinguished by an expansive vision that propels their musical journey forward. The band has received critical acclaim for the intricate harmonies, nuanced musicianship and impressive songwriting skills. MONSIEUR PERINÉ Monsieur Periné won a Latin GRAMMY award for “Best New Artist” in 2015. Rooted in gypsy jazz music and celebrating Django Reinhardt, Monsieur Periné's fresh style adds a variety of Latin elements to the mix. While incorporating genres like cumbia, son, bolero, tango and samba, the band performs traditional South American instruments like the charango, bandoneon and Latin percussion. THE SUFFERS The Suffers are a ten-piece band from Houston, TX and are redefining the sound of Gulf Coast Soul, intertwining elements of Classic American Soul with Rock & Roll. Both sonically and visually arresting, the large ensemble packs each position of the rhythm section and horn section with a level of talent and taste that provides the perfect foundation for singer Kam Franklin's massive voice.

CIBO MATTO Cibo Matto's music is an entirely selfcontained world, a look into the fantasy lives of Miho Hatori and Yuka C. Honda. Both women were raised in Japan, but met in New York's vivid 90s Lower East Side art scene. Soon after they met, the pair formed a punk band called Leitoh Lychee (frozen lychee nut), which eventually morphed into the post-genre freakout that Cibo Matto would become. JAKE DAVIS BAND (Rusty's EAC Winner) The Jake Davis Band is a Los Angeles based pop performer and this year’s winner of Rusty’s Emerging Artist Competition. The band used a high-energy, upbeat set in front of a standing room only audience to win a unanimous decision in the 15th annual edition of contest. The win earned the band the right to open for “Saving Ferris” in this season’s Twilight Concert Series the evening of August 25. Judges cited the group’s strong arrangements on high quality original material, excellent musical interaction between the band’s four members and Davis’ own vocal performance as particularly note-worthy. STEADY HOLIDAY Steady Holiday is Dre Babinski. Until now you could find her playing in bands around LA, opening for big tent stuff like Fitz and the Tantrums and Fun dot, and making a record with some friends from Dr. Dog. She enjoyed the sidewoman life, but longed for an outlet of her own, writing and recording in secret, developing a body of work about hidden desire itself. HOLY GHOST Alex Frankel and his Holy Ghost! bandmate Nick Millhiser may be methodical in their output-shimmering bursts of disco, synth-pop, and lingering grooves-but that doesn't mean Holy Ghost is not prodigious. They are DJs, producers and inventive musicians who've released countless original singles and albums.

JULY 7TH - NU SOUL

MAYER HAWTHORNE with ALINA BARAZ Mayer Hawthorne has over 100 million plays on YouTube, Spotify and all those other Internet sites. His sophomore album How Do You Do earned him a Grammy nod. And if he got a vote for every SoundCloud follower he has (five million), he could get elected Senator somewhere. But he's not some politician; he's a musician who writes songs from the soul. Here's some stuff you can't find on Wikipedia: Mayer Hawthorne starts his day off with waffles and The Whispers or turkey sausage and Steely Dan. Sometimes it's punk rock and pancakes for dinner. It doesn't matter as long as it's breakfast food and music. Raised by hippie parents in Ann Arbor, Michigan, smack between the Hash Bash and the car factories - Hawthorne's old man taught him to play bass guitar at age five. He would play records in the house all while Mayer was growing up. He put him up on game. He'd say, “You hear him singing there? That's David Ruffin.” Or, “You hear that guitar solo? That's Stephen Stills.” And young Hawthorne would sit there, with his bowl of cereal, soaking it up. Mayer DJed in Michigan at the height of Detroit hip-hop. He was there. Before Em blew, when Dilla was still alive. He was spinning records and making rap beats. Now he's making soul records and rappers are sampling him. Circle of life. Mayer's been digging in the crates and you can hear the influences in his music. A touch of Shuggie Otis here, some Bob Marley there, a sprinkle of Sly Stone… On his fourth full-length album is out now and spinning on KCRW, Hawthorne is back to handling the lion's share of production. He also played pretty much every instrument on the album and penned every track. His songwriting pulls from his life and observations; his heartache and joy.

THE PSYCHEDELIC FURS

Sometimes it's groovy, other times he's vulnerable and sincere. It's the stuff people listen to when they want to relax. The reason? Mayer Hawthorne stays making that timeless, soulful, baby-making music.

with DAY WAVE If you were to dissect today's alternative rock music, you'll find that much of it pays homage to The Psychedelic Furs. Led by vocalist and songwriter Richard Butler, and his bass-wielding brother Tim, the Furs scored major hits with "Love My Way," "Pretty In Pink," "Heaven," "The Ghost In You," and “Heartbreak Beat” in all releasing seven studio albums, spawning several compilations, a boxed set, and a live concert DVD. Born out of the post-punk UK rock scene, the Furs quickly developed as one of the premiere bands on US College and Modern Rock radio scoring a multitude of #1 singles. With the advent of MTV in the early 80's the band took off into the stratosphere, and when John Hughes approached the band with his film built around the Furs' song “Pretty In Pink”, the band's legacy was cemented. After a brief hiatus in the 90's, and a side project called “Love Spit Love", the band regrouped at the dawn of the new millennium. The Psychedelic Furs touring lineup remains Richard Butler (vocals), Tim Butler (bass), Rich Good (guitar), Mars Williams (saxophone), Amanda Kramer (keyboards), and Paul Garisto (drums).

There is an exciting resurgence of conscious, organic music in Jamaica and industry experts and observers agree that Protoje is playing an important role in what is becoming known as the "Reggae Revival." Leading the militant band - The Indiggnation - this powerful songwriter and philosophical thinker articulates the righteous anger of an emerging generation. Protoje reports for duty, re-establishing the standard for the decaying art of socially responsible, mentally stimulating lyricism. After successfully releasing 2 Albums "The Seven Year Itch" and "The 8 Year Affair" which spawned Rasta Love ft KyMani Marley and Kingston Be Wise; which was featured in Grand Theft Auto; Protoje releases his 3rd Studio Album titled ANCIENT FUTURE. Protoje's visibility has steadily increased with articles being written in major publications ahead of his album release, and a major achievement was being named to the BBC 1xtra Hot for 2015 Artiste list so he will be promoted across the BBC platform. Artistes were selected because As Mista Jams of BBC stated; "they're producing the quality music needed to become big in the next 12 months. It's a real cross section of really exciting new talent all currently on their A game." AUG 4TH - LATIN

NATALIA LAFOURCADE with MONSIEUR PERINÉ The most awarded artist of the last edition of the Latin Grammys started her successful career at age 14, when she joined the pop group Twist. It was then that she decided to devote her life to music and started attending music school. She learned to play guitar and piano, as well as studied singing and dancing. Later on, she attended a music training program at Berklee College of Music in Boston and, when she was 16, she started writing her own songs. In 2002, at age 17, she signed her first record deal with Sony Music and made her debut album: 'Natalia Lafourcade', which was produced by Loris Ceroni and Aureo Baqueiro. In 2005, she released her second album: 'Casa', which she wrote along with her band 'La Forquetina'. In 2006, after spending nine months in Canada, she wrote the instrumental album 'The Four Seasons of Love', which she

recorded with the Youth Symphony Orchestra of the State of Veracruz. At the same time, she also wrote some of the songs for her next solo album: 'Hu Hu Hu', which was released in 2009. Her fifth album is the magnificent 'Mujer Divina - Tribute to Agustin Lara', which has set common ground between generations and highlights the romantic character of Mexican hearts. Musicians such as Gilberto Gil, Vicentico, Miguel Bosé, Lila Downs, Adrián Dargelos (Babasónicos), Meme (Café Tacuba), Jorge Drexler, León Larregui (Zoé), Leonardo de Lozanne, Leonel García and Kevin Johansen contributed to this album. The album has become Platinum, reaching over 90,000 copies sold one year after its release. It has also remained in the Top Ten best-selling albums in iTunes for several months and was nominated for three Latin Grammy Awards, in the categories of: Best Alternative Music Album, Best Recording Engineering for an Album and Best Music Video, extended version. It is available for sale in physical and digital stores in Mexico, Latin America, Europe and the United States. Her last album released on March 2015, Hasta la raíz, came out as No.1 on iTunes and Deezer. Her first two singles Hasta la raiz and Lo que construímos, were positioned in the first place of Mexico´s viral 50 spotify top chart, and on the top ten of the global category. This album has become platinum in Mexico and gold in Italy. In this year's edition of the Latin Grammy awards, she won 5 of 6 nominations, including: Record of the year, Song of

AUG 11TH - DANCE

RÜFÜS DU SOL with MARC BAKER A lot can change in two years, and for a band selling out shows in places they'd never visited two years ago, a lot certainly has changed. What hasn't changed for RÜFÜS is a unique approach to their song writing that has seen them gather an ever increasing swathe of fans all over the world from Sydney to Berlin. Two years after their platinum selling debut album, RÜFÜS return with their follow up record, Bloom, and as the title would suggest, the band have blossomed into the tour-de-force that Atlas hinted at. Bloom picks up right where Atlas left off, it's dreamy vocals, moody synths and driving kicks. This time delivered with the confidence of a band who understands their place in the world; as musicians and as people. There is a maturity in Jon, James and Tyrone's production work that comes from spending two years on the road testing new songs. They've figured out what works and more importantly, why. Bloom is the product of isolation and saturation. The songwriters either being alone and away from friends and family, or at home soaked in familiarity. The only constant in the writing process was the three songwriters spending each day writing with the goal of creating a feeling. They start each project with an idea of a feeling, a setting, a location or a scene in their minds, and try to soundtrack that moment. Hunt says, “We were writing feelings more than songs. We were ready to cut a lot of the parts or elements to make sure there was this sense of exercising restraint, you don't want everything to sound big. If something goes down to almost nothing it makes the high points sound 20 times higher. And if you over-think something it can kill the spark sometimes."

RÜFÜS DU SOL

While making the album the trio found themselves dipping other mediums, filling their screen savers with underwater photography of animals. "That inspired the production, in some abstract way," Hunt says. "You get that feeling of floating underwater, the way water is darker the deeper you get." A bit of aqua-Googling later, they fell down an online sinkhole that told them a group of jellyfish is called a 'bloom' - and the trio found their album title. "The double meaning for Bloom felt perfect, things that can grow and flourish and open up over time," Hunt says. As the release of Bloom approaches it feels as if RÜFÜS have already broken the shackles of 2nd album syndrome. Early single You Were Right, is already certified Gold in their home country and has just won the ARIA award (Australian Grammy) for Best Dance Release. While the 3rd offering Innerbloom, at 9 minutes 38 seconds, is an ode to everything the band loves about dance music and everything Bloom means to them, Lindqvist explains;

"For us personally, we were each drawn to electronic music because of the euphoric nature of it. At its core, it brings people together to dance. I'm sure I'm not the first person to say this, but our favourite artists are our favourite because we've shared moments listening to them with friends or family that you can't recreate. Moments that stay with you. We really wanted to create those moments for other people with the songs from BLOOM. Innerbloom is probably the most personal song we've ever written in terms of where we are at as people. Hopefully, it can create for other people, some of the moments we've shared with each other and friends listening to our favourite songs...…" Using layered synths, drums and warm vocals, Jon, James and Tyrone have built a soundscape and aesthetic that is instantly familiar, yet distinctly their own. Bloom is written, recorded and produced by RÜFÜS. Available worldwide January 22. WEEK 7

AUG 18TH - CLASSIC

MAVIS STAPLES with THE SUFFERS

MAVIS STAPLES

Mavis Staples is living, breathing history. She is an alchemist of American music, having continuously crossed genre lines like no musician since Ray Charles. Weaving herself into the very fabric of gospel, soul, folk, pop, R B, blues, rock, and hip hop over the last 60 years, this iconic singer has seen and sung through so many changes, always rising up to meet every road. Now in her seventh decade, with the release of her new album Livin' on a High Note (ANTIH), she is only gaining momentum. Produced by M. Ward with songs by Neko Case, Justin Vernon, Nick Cave, Ben Harper, Tune-Yards, Aloe Blacc and others, the album serves as a summation and furtherance of her illustrious career. Refusing to fade away, she continues to tour incessantly, remaining as vital, engaged, and true

as always. There is no persona; she is, simply and untouchably, Mavis - and Livin' on a High Note is the symphony of her life. “I think about this album as a new beginning in my career,” says Mavis. “I'm living on a high note, I'm floating on air. I know I don't have as much time on this Earth as I've already had, but I see it as saying, 'Mavis has been here, y'all.' Before I move on, I just want to leave some Mavis with you that you're not used to hearing. I want to leave you with some joy and love, and some don't-forget-me songs.” And with those words, her high note is revealed not as a pinnacle of ease and wealth but as a righteous life. Mavis is here, having weaved in and through all that fabric for all these many years, to show us that true joy lies simply in living for others. It's the sermon Dr. King gave all those years ago, and we must be grateful that she is able to echo it for us now. Mavis takes usnot only there, but back, up, and through. Since her first recording at age 13 in 1954, Mavis Staples has learned from, worked with, and schooled countless legends, and has brought her own timeless talent to every performance. From the Deltainflected gospel sound she helped create in the 1950s with her father, Pops, and her brother and sisters as The Staple Singers, to the freedom songs of the Civil Rights era, to pop radio stardom during the Stax era with hits “I'll Take You There” and “Respect Yourself,” to The Last Waltz, to serving as muse to both Bob Dylan and Prince at the peak of their careers, to 21st century collaborations with Van Morrison, Billy Preston, Zac Brown, Ry Cooder, Chuck D. and Willie Nelson, to her Grammy winning partnership with fellow Chicagoan Jeff Tweedy, the one constant has been Mavis and her singular voice. She has embraced her evolution, absorbing new sounds and ideas, rising to meet the challenges of longevity and bringing her message of hope and positivity to new listeners, song after song, show after show. SAVE FERRIS with CIBO MATTO & JAKE DAVIS BAND

(Rusty's Emerging

Artist Competition Winner)

SAVE FERRIS is a ska-punk band formed circa 1995 in Orange County, Southern California. Their name is a reference to the 1986 film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The band formed after the dissolution of a number of Southern California bands. With Monique Powell as manager, front person, and co-songwriter, the band began to book shows around Southern California to a great underground response. Financed by Powell's sister, the band released their debut EP "Introducing SAVE FERRIS" on Powell's label, Starpool Records, in 1996. They ended up selling close to 20,000 copies of their EP out of the trunks of their cars, with huge support from Orange County independent record shops and fans. That year, Powell provided vocals on the Reel Big Fishsong "She Has A Girlfriend Now" on their album "Turn the Radio Off" (Mojo). With Powell as manager and lead, and as favorites of KROQ radio's legendary Rodney on the Rock, SAVE FERRIS created a presence on LA's KROQ radio, possibly being the first unsigned band to do this in LA alternative radio history. Later that year, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences gave the band a Grammy showcase award for best unsigned band, earning them a recording contract with Epic Records (SONY). The band released their debut fulllength album for Epic in 1997. "It Means Everything" featured several re-recorded tracks from the EP, several new songs, and, on Powell's urging, a cover of Dexy's Midnight Runners' "Come on Eileen," which

SAVE FERRIS

the band released as their first official single, and what was to become their most successful single. The band also released "The World is New" as a single which was featured in the film "The Big Hit" starring Mark Wahlburg. Olympic medal winner Tara Lipinski used "The World is New" in her debut program as a professional skater in the nationally telecast 1998 Skate TV Championships. The band toured extensively in support of "It Means Everything", opening for bands such as Sugar Ray, The Offspring, and Reel Big Fish. In April 1998, they made their television debut on HBO's music series "REVERB" and made an on-screen appearance in the cult classic teen film, "10 Things

I Hate About You". The album sold over 400,000 copies, and spawned three Top Ten hits in both Japan and Mexico. With two singles in the Billboard top 100 and full rotation on alternative radio all over the world, SAVE FERRIS has managed to go Platinum internationally. Winter 1998 saw the departure of their drummer. After a thunderously successful main stage tour with the Vans Warped Tour, the band began writing their follow-up to "It Means Everything". The appropriately-titled "Modified" was released in October 1999. The album saw the band moving away from their ska-punk roots and into pop-punk territory. The band toured nationally with the band "Lit", of hit single "My Own Worst

Enemy" fame. SAVE FERRIS continued to tour in support of "Modified" throughout 2000 and 2001. In August and September 2001 the band did a short tour of the UK. In the winter of 2002, SAVE FERRIS had the rare opportunity to play front and center at the nationally broadcast Winter Olympics Snowboarding Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah. Still fronted by their original lead singer, SAVE FERRIS has been through a number of changes in their musical lineup through the years. Powell self-financed what she called the "For the Fans" SAVE FERRIS US tour in 2003. On March 29, 2003 at Ska Summit 2003 in Las Vegas, SAVE FERRIS played on the main stage to a thunderously positive response. Other appearances of note Ms. Powell has made: "Mayor of the Sunset Strip" film, "Roswell" network television show, "The Conan O'Brien Show", "Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher", MTV's Loveline with Dr. Drew, the "Keenan Ivory Wayans" show, and the "Late Show with Craig Kilbourne".

BIOS FROM PAGE 12 ation for synthesizers. The new songs channel with the spirit of psych innovators without ignoring the last 40 years of music, forming a flowing, cohesive whole that reflects restless creativity. Cosmic escapes and disco rhythms speak to developing new vocabulary, while Nielson's vocals reach powerful new heights. “It felt good to be rebelling against the typical view of what an artists is today, a curator,” he says. “It's more about being someone who makes things happen in concrete ways. Building old synthesizers and bringing them back to life, creating sounds that aren't quite like anyone else's. I think that's much more subversive.” While legions of artists show fidelity to the roots of psychedelia, Unknown Mortal Orchestra shares the rare quality that makes the genre's touchstones so vital, constant exploration. OHIO PLAYERS

WEEK 10

SEPT 8TH - DISCO

OHIO PLAYERS with HOLY GHOST! The Ohio Players came into musical prominence in the 1970's as pioneers of street funk and underground R&B. After signing with Mercury Records in 1974 through 1977 The Ohio Players landed three consecutive platinum albums “Skin Tight, “Fire”, and “Honey”. Two number one singles on the billboard pop charts “Fire” and “Love

Rollercoaster” and five number one R&B singles “Funky Worm”,”Fire”,”Sweet Sticky Thing”, “Love Rollercoaster,” and “Who'd She Coo”. The Ohio Players traveled the world and produced more than a dozen albums and received 14 gold and platinum awards for their labors. They also appeared on many national television programs from Dick Clark, Don Kushner, to David Letterman. Since then there is a long list of Artists who have sampled or re-recorded their material to list a few: Snoop Dogg, Puff Daddy, Salt & Peppa, Too Short, Sound garden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paul Jackson Jr., and Alex Bugnon.

Currently the band consists of 10 members 4 of which are original members. James “Diamond” Williams (Drums), Billy Beck (Keyboard), Clarence Willis (Lead Guitar), and Robert Kuumba,(Percussion). One might think the band members could now sit back and count their gold and platinum records, enjoy the memories and fade into an easy retirement. Nothing could be further from the truth. These guys have managed to keep busy and have been entertaining crowds of people all over the world who sing their songs and dance to the melodies and funky grooves. The Ohio

Players today are one of the few bands from the 70's era who still currently performs all of their music using no computers or samplers to enhance their musical production. The Ohio Players are thankful for still having a large loyal fan base who come to the shows and are still enthusiastic to hear the original sounds from the 70's. The Ohio Players are enthusiastic and eager with the dawn of their new release. “This is your Night” The group's first new release in 13 years. After 38yrs in the business this group is still setting stages on “Fire” and riding their own “Love Rollercoaster”.
