‘Tis the Season 2015

Have a smooth and safe holiday shopping season

T

he holiday season in Santa Monica means celebrations, world class shopping and ice skating just blocks from our famed beach. A city that prides itself on innovation, each year brings something new. For this holiday season, the Expo light rail line will be in full test mode changing the way we move around out city. Trains will run from the city border on the east all the way to the end of the line at the Esplanade, which is still under construction, and will connect the Downtown Santa Monica Station to the Pier entrance via Colorado Avenue.

With the transition to a rail-friendly city, there are many safety tips to keep in mind when walking, riding or driving near the tracks. Don’t walk, sit or stand on the tracks and never try to beat the train. The other big change is the reconfiguration of Colorado Avenue.

Left turns are no longer allowed along the stretch of Colorado west of 17th Street. This change has been challenging for drivers. Between the Santa Monica Police Department and the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department, hundreds of warnings and citations have been issued to drivers. Public safety officials urge drivers to be extracautious and aware of changes in routes, and always abide by posted signs. The easiest way to get to Downtown is by bus or bike. There are several Big Blue Bus routes that serve the area and all other Santa Monica shopping destinations. Or you can try out one of the new Breeze Bike Share Bikes sponsored by Hulu. With more than 500 on our City streets, there will be one nearby with a basket, perfect for transporting those holiday gifts. Best part, when you bike or bus you don’t have to worry about parking! If you do need to drive, be ready to Go With the Flow. The City of Santa Monica is once again implementing our successful Go With the Flow traffic management program to get holiday shoppers to their destinations and back

out again as smoothly as possible. The program aims to keep cars moving, streets safer and parking easier to find in Downtown Santa Monica. During busy holiday shopping days, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., traffic officers and other city staff will be out in force; directing drivers in and out of parking structures, relieving crowded intersections and trouble spots, and keeping intersections clear of gridlock. In Downtown, making left turns in or out of parking structures will not be allowed. This will keep traffic flowing and reduce backups entering and exiting structures. In addition, signs will be placed at major routes into town notifying drivers which lots have available spaces. There are nine parking structures Downtown offering a whopping 5,539 spaces, all within one block of each other (see map). You can use the SM Parking app to find which lots have the most availability and to select a parking destination before you head out for your holiday shopping trip. Whether your holiday shopping takes you to Santa Monica Place, the Third Street Promenade, Montana Avenue,

Main Street or Pico Boulevard; the Santa Monica Police Department urges you to follow these safety tips. 1. Stay alert and aware of what’s going on around you and park in a well-lit area. 2. Don’t leave packages and shopping bags in plain view of wouldbe thieves. Whenever possible stash them in your trunk. 3. If you are shopping with kids, teach them to go to a store clerk or security guard if you get separated. Nothing says the holiday season more than the merriment of celebrating with family and friends. If that celebration will include a glass or two of bubbly, make sure you designate a driver or call a cab. For more information on “Go with the Flow,” and links to the parking app, please visit www.gowiththeflowsm.com. The City of Santa Monica wishes you and your loved ones a very safe and happy holiday season.

‘Tis the Season 2015

Winterlit helps you find the holiday spirit E

very holiday season Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. hosts several free holiday events and activities to help light up the city and this year will be no different. Whether it is an iceskating rink, Christmas tree and menorah lightings, photos with Santa Claus, a classic holiday movie screening or a toy drive to remind us all what the true spirit of the holidays is all about, there is something for every Santa Monican to enjoy through this year's Winterlit activities.

ICE at Santa Monica is a true city staple going into its ninth year as the famed outdoor ice skating rink by the sea. It will be open from Nov. 1, 2015 to Jan. 18, 2016 and is sure to make your spirits bright. Then there is the annual lighting of the official City of Santa Monica Holiday Tree at the Third Street Promenade between Arizona Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard on Thursday, Dec. 3 from 5:30 - 8:30 p.m. And if you are so inclined, you can take photos with the jolly St. Nick himself that night. The Santa Monica High School Marching Band and Choral Program will also be on hand to provide some festive music for the occasion. Speaking of lighting, there will be menorah lightings to celebrate the “festival of lights” from Dec. 6 - Dec. 13

at the Third Street Promenade between Arizona Avenue and Santa Monica Boulevard at sundown each night. On the night of Dec. 10 there will be live music by Klezmer Juice, a four-piece band specializing in vibrant Yiddish soul. It's hard to think of a better holiday tradition than watching a festive movie, and watching it among friends, family and neighbors can only make it better! Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. will hold a holiday movie night on Dec. 18 on the Third Street Promenade between Broadway and Santa Monica Boulevard. And what are they screening? The holiday classic “Home Alone” of course! The PG film will be accompanied by hot cocoa and kids crafts. Crafts will begin at 6 p.m. and the film will begin screening at 7 p.m. And making sure we never forget that giving is better than getting, DTSM and Santa Monica Place will host the PAL Best Gift Ever Toy Drive from Nov. 5 Dec. 11, allowing residents the chance to donate a new unwrapped gift or gift card at designated locations to go to those in need. With all that Winterlit has to offer Santa Monica is sure to be merry and bright all season long.

ICE is back! S

unny Santa Monica becomes a winter wonderland but once a year and it's all due to a little bit of ICE. Or a lot of ICE actually.

On Nov. 1 the 9th annual ICE at Santa Monica will return to the corner of 5th Street and Arizona Avenue. With 8,000 square feet of real ice this premier ice-skating venue and gathering spot full of holiday cheer promises to delight Santa Monicans of all ages. Operated by Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. and open from Nov. 1, 2015 to Jan. 18, 2016 the rink offers the chance for everyone on the Westside to skate to their heart’s content all holiday season. “The ice skating rink is a magical

place,” said Mackenzie Carter of Downtown Santa Monica, Inc. “It brings together the best of what Santa Monica has to offer, which is the sunshine, the beautiful weather and the merriment of Downtown Santa Monica. When you’re there it’s just fun. People can chat with their friends and neighbors while their kids skate and enjoy this beloved winter activity at the beach, an experience that not many other cities can offer.” The grand opening of the rink will occur on Nov. 5 from 6 - 10 p.m. and is completely free to the public. Skaters of all ages and skill sets are welcome to enjoy complimentary treats from Holy Cow BBQ, P.F. Chang's, See's Candies, PlanetSmoothie, Sweetgreen, and Yogurtland.

That night an elite performance choreographed by world figure skating champion Randy Gardner will “break the ice” before the rink is opened up for a free skate session, complete with faux snow and DJ jams. There will be a cookie decorating station, an interactive wintry-themed

photo booth and mobile screen-printing activations. During the 2014-2015 season ICE brought over 58,000 skaters to the rink and held 150 birthday celebrations in its cabanas that line the perimeter of the SEE

ICE FROM PAGE 8 rink. To schedule a party at ICE go to ICEatSantaMonica.com and click on the Parties at ICE link. Those who want to sign up for private lessons or group classes with the Randy Gardner School of Skating can book them online as well. This year will be the first time you can actually choose which coach you'd like to have a skate lesson with. One of the most interesting things about ICE is that all the water used to create the rink is reclaimed water. “All activities and programs in Downtown Santa Monica are created for the good of the entire community, and we are committed to insuring that all of our events have low environmental impact,” Carter said. “Recognizing we are in the midst of a drought, we have worked with our vendor to confirm that the icerink will have as minimal an impact on water consumption as possible, that includes using urban runoff that is captured before reaching our local beaches. “While it is not drinkable, the water is treated before being used at ICE. Based on local data which tracks individual and home water usage, we discovered that the ice-rink has a low water expenditure. We use approximately 207,000 gallons of water to make ice during the 3-month season. “With 58,000 skaters at ICE that is

approximately 3.5 gallons per skater. This is less than one day’s worth of dish washing or hand washing, according to the City's Office of Sustainability and the Environment. Or it is less than half the amount used during a 5-minute shower, the amount of time city officials are suggesting as part of their water reduction efforts. “ICE is one of our most popular programs and has become a tradition for many residents and visitors. We are looking forward to once again welcoming locals and tourists to our winter oasis,” Carter said. When you're on your way to ICE don't forget to bring a new unwrapped

gift, gift card or make a cash donation to support the Police Activities League's Annual Best Gift Ever Toy Drive! The gifts will be collected all throughout the month of November.

‘Tis the Season 2015

Gift shop till you drop in Downtown Santa Monica O

ne of the things that always seem to make the holidays a little less cheerful and a little more stressful is shopping for presents. Figuring out where to go and what to get for each person on your list is enough to make you want you just hand everyone a crisp $20 (kind of). But it doesn't have to be that way, especially when you live so close to somewhere that has so many amazing shopping options: Downtown Santa Monica. Yes, being in Santa Monica this time of the year makes gift shopping easy, and this list of where to go Downtown to find the perfect present for everyone you love makes it even easier.

Let's start out with the little guys, as they are usually the easiest to please. If you are looking for a store that specializes in wooden toys, dress up clothes, dolls and crafts then look no further than the Acorn Store (1220 5th St.). And if the kid in your life just can't seem to “let it go” then the Disney Store (395 Santa Monica Pl. #212) is the best place for deals on all Disney toys and merchandise. For kids who want to rock on think about getting them a lesson or two at Green Brooms Music Academy (1445 6th St., Suite 101). There is no one like your mother and to show her just how much you care about her consider heading to Beadahs (203 Arizona Ave.) where you can create unique jewelry pieces that she will treasure forever (maybe even more than the one you made out of macaroni when you were 5). For an artsy mother Adamm's Stained Glass & Gallery (1426 4th St.) is a safe bet, as they have forged a reputation for creating the finest stained glass available with lots of great one-of-a-kind pieces.

And for the mother who always fed you right there is Penzey's Spices (1347 4th St.), a store featuring herbs, spices and flavorings from all over the world sold by the pound or in many different kinds of gift baskets. Now that we got mom covered, let's figure out what dear old dad might like. If you have a dad who likes to look his best, pop on in to Goorin Bros. Hat Shop (312 Santa Monica Blvd.), a store that has offered handcrafted quality hats for over 100 years, since Cassel Goorin operated his business from a cart in Pittsburgh. If dad is a real bookworm then consider investing in a gift from Kenneth Karmiole, Bookseller Inc. (1239A 3rd Ct.) a shop that deals in rare, antiquarian and collectable books. And if pop has been known to sneak a stogie now and again then Lone Wolf Fine Cigars (223-B Broadway) will have what you’re looking for. Significant others can always be tricky as every relationship is as unique as a snowflake, so no one gift will work for every person. So to cover all your bases think of a few options. For that special lady in your life consider buying a piece from Reader Fine Jewelers (331 Wilshire Blvd.), a family operated business with a collection of unique fine jewelry. If she has a real sweet tooth head over to IT’SUGAR (1427 Third Street Promenade) and get her some giant Reese’s Cups or a box full of retro candy. And if you think she could really use some pampering get her a gift certificate to the Fred Segal Salon (420 Broadway), one of the premier salons in the world. Gifts can be found for boyfriends and husbands too at Fred Segal, the goto spot for men's fashion-forward

apparel. If your man enjoys the latest in consumer products that are functional in purpose, have a distinct design and aren't available from other retailers then get him a new gadget from Brookstone (1313 Third Street Promenade), or one of those awesome chairs. Does your guy like electronics but wants some really unique finds? Look no further than Optimal Enchantment (522 Santa Monica Blvd.) where they carefully select their products and offer an environment for people to compare their options in a meaningful way. Nasty Gal (1254 Third Street Promenade), an American-based and owned retailer that specializes in clothing, shoes and accessories, is the perfect place to buy a new outfit for sis. But if jewelry is more her thing then go to Pandora (395 Santa Monica Place, #128) to get her a charm or two so she can show off your bond in style. If your brother can't get enough of the Santa Monica sun then head to O'Neill (131 Broadway) for all things in beach lifestyle sportswear. And if you have a brother who loves his collectibles try your luck at Puzzle Zoo (1411 Third Street Promenade), a store that specializes in everything from Tim Burton hard-to-find collectibles to “Star Wars” action figures for kids and adults alike. Now that you've found something for everyone on your list your arms are probably dragging on the ground and you can't wait to get everything into the car. Lucky for you your car is probably within walking distance as Downtown Santa Monica makes it easy to find available parking.

Here are a few of the convenient options for parking in Santa Monica. Montana Avenue shoppers and merchants celebrate 30 years of holiday tradition! T

he tradition continues! Shoppers and retailers will kick of their holiday season with style at Montana Avenue’s Small Business Saturday, November 28, and its thirtieth annual Montana Avenue Holiday Walk on December 4. The 150 shops, restaurants, and establishments on this premier retail destination will swing open their doors and celebrate the season with remarkable discounts, specials, and promotions on Small Business Saturday, and then fill the night with live music, taste treats, and festivities on the Montana Avenue Holiday Walk. Sponsored by American Express, Small Business Saturday is part of nationwide event that offers shoppers an alternative to the hustle bustle of a mall, complete with all the charm and friendly ambience of shopping in a small village of sophisticated retailers. “Montana Avenue is like Cheers ‘where everyone knows your name,’—a great community and Small Business Saturday proves the point,” says Jane Walker of TEXTURE, The Sweater Store. “It’s a way for retailers to give back to their customers and for customers to support

their local small businesses. Plus everybody has a great time!” The promotions are as varied as the business that offer them on this hip, chic—and delicious—street. “Many shops offer big discounts just for the day, and restaurants will offer special Small Business Saturday specials. Every establishment does something different. There’s so much going on that there’s no reason to shop anywhere else,” Walker says. Montana’s eleven blocks of open-air shopping allows customers to experience the holiday “rush” in a relaxed, pleasant atmosphere, where they can stroll down a tree-lined street, stop for coffee or a meal, and, as Walker notes, “still find everything they need, whether it’s for babies, business associates, Grandpa or something to wear on New Year’s Eve.” The Montana Avenue Holiday Walk is a thirty-year tradition. Stores along the street stay open late for shoppers to hunt for unique holiday gifts and still enjoy the fun on the sidewalk. Neighbor meets neighbor in a convivial atmosphere. Kids can meet up with Santa for a photograph, and the whole family can join in the caroling on street corners. “All the doors are open, the windows are decorated and even the trees are beaming with holiday lights,”

Walker explains. Montana Avenue retailers are wellknown for sponsoring community events throughout the year—whether its the renowned Montana Avenue Sidewalk Sale, the Montana Avenue Art Walk, the Montana Avenue Halloween Hop—and many call the Montana Avenue Holiday Walk is the highlight of the holiday season. “I have customers who brought their little kids in for cookies and music years ago, and now those kids bring their kids!” exudes

Walker. “The Montana Avenue Holiday Walk is about community and about having fun. This is what makes Santa Monica a hometown.” Small Business Saturday is November 28 during daytime business hours. The Montana Avenue Holiday Walk is December 4 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Shoppers interested in specific promotion are encouraged to contact their favorite stores directly for more information.

Locally made gifts H

oliday shoppers looking for handcrafted, locally-made gifts can find exciting variety at Montana Avenue businesses. Stores such as the Ten Women Gallery, Marcia Bloom, La Vitrine Designs, LuxyGem, and the Quilted Monkey offer clothing, art, jewelry, rugs and other goods to customers looking for one-of-akind products.

On most days, a visitor to Marcia Bloom’s store can find her at work right inside. “I make almost everything in my store,” said Bloom, “Everyday I bring in something different.” From start to finish, Bloom’s clothing is as local as can be. “I get the fabric locally, I make it myself, walk to work, and hang it on a hanger at my store,” said Bloom, “I have a pretty small footprint for a very pretty product - nothing is ever shipped.” These methods are both sustainable and support the community. “It really makes me appreciate living in Santa Monica,” said Bloom, who compares purchasing local fabric to the experience of shopping at a farmer’s market. “You’re shopping locally and finding what people have to offer,” said Bloom, “often I have fabric that no one else has.” Montana Avenue’s Ten Women Gallery is a co-operative art and gift gallery comprised of 24 women artists who support one another in the promotion, display, and sale of their artistic work. Artist, Anthea Brown explains “All of us are artists and makers, nothing is mass produced.” The gallery features a variety of artistic mediums including paper arts, mixed media, ceramics, glass, paintings, textiles, jewelry, photography, and sculpture. The members of the co-op have developed a strong internal community over a mutual love of creating and the desire to keep these artistic traditions alive in the community . “We support each other as artists,” said Brown, “We all contribute to keep it going.” Shoppers in Santa Monica are increasingly seeking out handcrafted, locally made goods. “They definitely like buying locally,” said Bloom, “People of all ages are appreciating individually made items, they recognize that there is something different.” Ten Women Gallery has been well received by Montana shoppers, said Brown, who seek it out for its uniquely handcrafted objects. “People come in and say ‘Is this locally made?,” said Brown, “they appreciate that we are working in the community and that they have the opportunity to meet the artists every time they visit.” Working in the gallery allows for more meaningful interaction with customers. “You get feedback from people who are buying your work, and opportunities for commissions,” said Brown, “It’s really nice to have that

personal communication.” For Bloom, this has made all the difference. “To get to know my customers...that’s made me really happy,” added Bloom, “with my little footprint I’ve contributed to a lot of people’s happiness.” Marcia Bloom has been making clothing for 35 years, 14 of which have been on Montana Avenue. “I’m now making clothes for the children of people I’ve made clothes for,” said Bloom, laughing. For Bloom, the process of handcrafting clothing will always set these garments apart. “I think they have a soul, if that’s possible,” said Bloom, “They say it with food too, you can tell when something’s been cooked with love, and I think that’s the same with clothes, you can tell when they have been made with love...it’s just got something different.” A sense of community connects Montana Avenue businesses who offer handmade goods. “The thing that links us is that we all love handmade things,” said Brown, “That’s our love and our passion, and we tend to support each other in that.” These businesses offer goods to satisfy a variety of needs and tastes. The Quilted Monkey is a home furnishing store that specializes in colorful, eco- friendly custom-sized rugs, handcrafted gift items made by local artisans, and handmade baby quilts, booties, hats and dresses. Stores such as Sleepy Jones, M0581, Jigsaw London, Malin & Goetz and Shopaholic Sample Sales have all recently opened their doors on Montana Avenue. This friendly, easy-to-walk local shopping street has welcomed new businesses to the neighborhood which has been home to some for decades. Walking along the street’s more than 150 businesses one might be surprised to know the humble beginning of what has become a top shopping location. “Montana, when it started in the ‘70s, had five gas stations, a nursery...the funeral parlor took up one block,” said Jane Walker of TEXTURE: A Sweater Store. These days, Montana Avenue is better known for boutiques and trendy restaurants than automotive fuel. While the street hosts some larger, national brands, the area retains its penchant for smaller ‘mom n pop’ businesses. “It’s one of the few shopping streets still left that has a wide variety of small businesses,” said Walker, “It makes

a big difference to how you experience this street and this community.” The neighborhood appeal is enhanced by annual street wide special events such as the Art Walk, the Halloween Hop, and the Sidewalk Sale. s the holidays wind down and New Year's resolutions kick off, Santa Monica Travel & Tourism (formerly Santa Monica Convention & Visitors Bureau) is set to pay homage to the city's healthy lifestyle and culinary scene with the 4th annual Eat Well Week from January 11 - 17, 2016.

Santa Monica diners are invited to kick off a healthier new year during this time in which some of the city's most popular dining establishments will serve restaurant-goers healthy and delicious dishes that have been crafted specially for the health-focused culinary program. Running in conjunction with California Restaurant Month in January, Eat Well Week is once again poised to highlight Santa Monica's position in the vanguard of the healthy eating movement. The annual Santa Monica culinary campaign is set to cater to an audience of diners that have come to expect nothing but California cuisine at its finest. As a city that emerged as an international culinary destination

Although the city has been receiving dining accolades for decades, this increased focus on the Santa Monica culinary scene happens as the city really comes into its own as a culinary destination - a move marked by a recent injection of trendy new dining options all throughout the city. Get in the holiday spirit on Main Street T

is the season to be jolly, and Main Street is once again going to be celebrating in style. The Main Street holiday event on Saturday, Dec. 5, brings the Santa Monica community together for tradition and merriment, bringing joy to attendees young and old.

“It’s all part of the holiday celebration and the holiday spirit,” said Gary Gordon, director of the Main Street Business Improvement Association. The festivities kick off at 5:00 p.m., when Santa Claus is available for

Main Street Holiday Instagram Contest YOU CAN WIN A GIFT BASKET BY SUBMITTING YOUR PHOTO OF YOUR FAVORITE MAIN STREET HOLIDAY DECORATION

photographs with kids on the lawn at California Heritage Museum, 2612 Main St. Santa Monica High School’s choir will perform at 6 p.m. to set the mood for the evening with a variety of classics and other holiday tunes. Santa will then preside over a countdown to the anticipated lighting of the Holiday tree at the lawn, which is followed by a short candlelight walk to the iconic shopping cart tree at the Edgemar Center for the Arts. Music from the Off Their Jingle Bell Rockers will entertain crowds until close to 7 p.m., when attendees disperse to

enjoy the parties and other activities in the shops and restaurants along Main Street. “The idea is that people come to the tree lighting or the music at the shopping cart tree at Edgemar, or both, and then go to the parties in the businesses on the street, which start at 6pm and end at 9pm,” Gordon said. “The parties are really the major part of what goes on in the evening.” “It’s about coming to see what’s on the street, discovering new businesses, rediscovering businesses you already know and having a good time,” Gordon said.

Merchants will put up holiday decorations (there will be a list on the website, www.mainstreetsm.com): the business that receives the greatest number of user-generated pictures using the designated hashtag

#MyMainVoteSM will win the first place prize; with prizes for the second and third place "vote" getters. The person whose photo receives the most "likes" on his or her photo will be a winner and receive a gift package

from Main Street merchants (donors to the gift package will be listed on the website). The contest begins Nov. 27 and ends at 2am Dec. 6, 2015.

Experience shopping on Main Street T

he numerous shops and businesses may have different strategies, but their owners agree in their belief that customers can have better gift-buying experiences on Main Street than in a department store or online.

“They have original designs or things you can’t find elsewhere,” said Gary Gordon, director of the Main Street Business Improvement Association. “You can’t go into Macy’s or onto Amazon and find this particular thing.” What “this particular thing” is will vary from shopper to shopper, recipient to recipient and budget to budget, but suffice it to say there are oodles of gift options to be found in the shops, boutiques and galleries on Main Street. “Main street is special,” Gordon said. “It’s not ordinary stuff. It’s for the people who are looking for that special gift. That’s one of the reasons Main Street is Main Street. It’s different than the promenade. There are residents and tourists who value the Main Street experience.” Gordon said shoppers are also motivated by a city-backed “Buy Local” philosophy to put their cash to use on Main Street as opposed to spending money at big-brand chain stores or on the Internet. “Every dollar spent in a store in Santa Monica, and in our case, on Main Street, is a dollar that spends most of its time in the local economy rather than going elsewhere,” Gordon said. “A lot of people in Santa Monica have that consciousness.” Main Street has everything from clothing, jewelry and other accessories to original artwork, handmade crafts, home decor items, collectibles and beyond. “There’s that whole variety of stores on the street,” Gordon said. “When it comes to the gift-giving season, the street is chock-full of businesses where people can buy gifts.” Here’s a sampling of what’s available along what has become a renowned retail destination in Santa Monica: Accents Jewelry 2900 Main St., (310) 396-2284 www.accentsjewelry.com A longtime jewelry boutique featuring the work of local designers. ‘Tis the Season 2015

Main Street declared Cycling Central! T

he bicycle has long been a go-to mode of transportation in Santa Monica for residents and tourists alike. It makes sense: The weather is almost always accommodating, the streets are becoming more and more conducive and the sights and sounds of the beachside city are perfect to enjoy on two wheels.

And Main Street has steadily transformed into Santa Monica’s cycling mecca, serving as a hub for locals who are interested in eco-friendly commutes and as a destination for visitors who want access to a variety of rentals. “You’ve got the beach with the bike path, and that’s sort of historic, but in the last few years you’ve got this emphasis on riding bikes not only for health and fitness but for transportation,” said Gary Gordon, director of the Main Street Business Improvement Association. “You’ve got the City working on improving bike lanes, you’ve got this new bikeshare program and more places where you can lock up your bike. You’ve got the bike valet at the farmers market and other places starting to do bike valet around the city. “There’s a lot of emphasis within the city to make people more aware that they can bike. And that awareness translates into the marketplace. These places wouldn’t be opening if they didn’t think there was a market for sales, rentals and tours.” The trend is exemplified by the cluster of bike shops that has cropped up in the area, offering a unique mix of options. Lately there’s been a growing focus on electric bikes, which are equipped with motors and which allow riders to get around relatively quickly without expending energy. Riders can turn off the motor when they want to pedal.

Bike Attack (2400 Main) has been on Main Street since 1999, they started selling e-bikes in 2006 but opened a second store on Main Street earlier this year specifically to expand its e-bike business. Electric Bike Attack (2904 Main) located between Ashland Avenue and Kinney Street, touts the benefits of getting around on an e-bike. Proponents say riders get to spend time outdoors and reduce their carbon footprints without waiting for cars in traffic. Steps from the Electric Bike Attack shop are two other e-bike shops, Izip (2803 Main) and Pedego Santa Monica (214 Pier Ave.), which are both international e-bike brands. Izip, which is located between Hill Street and Ashland Avenue, relocated to Main Street from Lincoln Boulevard in Venice about three years ago to promote e-bikes with a larger showroom. “The original intent was that this is a customer experience center so this is really the face of Currie Technologies,” Izip general manager Steve Ryu said. “A place where we get to showcase our bikes and our different line of bikes, but most importantly, because Currie Technologies has been doing e-bikes for about 16 or 17 years, we wanted to really use the space to educate people to what e-bikes are really about and how they work.” Pedego arrived in the Main Street district shortly after Izip and started up e-bike tours and rentals of Santa Monica and the surrounding area. The shop is on Pier Avenue between Main and 2nd streets. Another bike shop, Giant Santa Monica (2411 Main) opened in June on Main Street between Hollister Avenue and Ocean Park Boulevard. Established in 1972, Giant is one of the largest bicycle manufacturers in the world. ElectroBike (2665 Main) recently opened, rounding out the array of bike shops here on

Main St., Santa Monica’s cycling capital. Steve Wittels, a general manager at Pedego, said “if people do recognize that there are quite a few places to go with different kinds of brands, it will get more people down to Main Street, kind of like how car dealerships congregate next to each other.”

‘Tis the Season 2015

Happy hours dish up deal-icious dining on Main Street T

here are plenty of reasons to be happy on Main Street. Globally inspired food can be found at the multitude of restaurants. A full bar is never far away. And plenty of Main Street's heralded hotspots have both. Perhaps one of the best ways to experience all of the delicious dining and drinking options is by sampling the numerous happy hours, which get started as early as noon and run as late as midnight.

From Brussels sprouts and beer to pizza and pinot grigio, from calamari and cocktails to sliders and sangria, there's something waiting to impress your palate. Check out the deals during some of Main Street's happiest hours:

Areal 2820 Main St., (310) 392-1661 Have you ever wanted to try a salmon burger without committing to the whole thing? Areal has you covered with a salmon slider, which is one of its $4 offerings during daily happy hours. (You probably won't hear any complaints from your tablemates if you order some bacon-wrapped dates and Pacific pizza with clams and shrimp while you're at it.) Happy hour goes from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday and 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Areal, which has indoor dining, a bar and a lounge as well as a large patio.

Basement Tavern 2640 Main St., (310) 396-2469 At the Basement Tavern at the Victorian, the happy hour menu is the invitation you didn't need to check out this popular Santa Monica gem. Mac and cheese balls with spicy ketchup for $4? (Check.) Brussels sprouts with parmesan cheese and hazelnuts, also for $4? (Yep.) Throw in $3 house beers,

$5 glasses of house wine and $5 cocktails, and you're essentially set for the evening. Happy hour runs from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 5 p.m. to close on Sunday. Stick around for a buzzing atmosphere at night.

The Galley 2442 Main St., (310) 452-1934 A nautical-themed restaurant and bar that has been around for more than 80 years, The Galley is truly an anchor on Main Street. Buoying the longtime drinking and dining destination is an ocean of happy hour specials, which are offered seven days a week. For just $5, soak up some New England clam chowder, dive into a plate of fish 'n' chips or splash fried calamari into cilantro-scallion sauce. Feeling adventurous? Sail towards gastronomic glory with an order of fresh Dungeness crab cakes with zesty plum wine sauce ($6). Really, whatever floats your boat.

Library Alehouse 2911 Main St., (310) 314-4855 It's not a requirement to keep quiet at the Library Alehouse, but it's likely that you won't be doing much talking as you feast on the “study break” happy hour items at this book-themed craft beer bar. Korean-born chef Tom Hugenberger brings stylistic flair to reinvited pub grub, whether it's the house barbecue sauce and fennel apple slaw on the pulled pork slider ($3), the citrus aioli with the asparagus frites ($3.50) or the roasted poblano pepper on the mango and goat cheese quesadilla ($4.50). Take $3 off wine glasses and select draft brews during happy hour, which is available from 3 to 6 p.m. on weekdays.

M Street Kitchen 2000 Main St., (310) 396-9145 Poring over M Streek Kitchen's happy hour menu is an exercise in seeing just how far $10 can go. A turkey burger with a glass of California pinot grigio? (You're under.)

Happy Holidays from your Neighborhood Friends at Areal Restaurant

Two chicken tacos with pico de gallo and cilantro and two beers? (You're in the clear.) Hummus and vegetables with warm pita, a side of hand-cut fries and a glass of red sangria? (You're still safe.) The seemingly endless combinations, available weekdays from 4 to 6:30 p.m., are complemented by a serious selection of baked goods at the counter and shaded outdoor seating.

O'Brien's Irish Pub 2941 Main St., (310) 396-4725 If you think O'Brien's is only good for live music and challenging trivia, think again. The Irish pub offers happy hour deals from noon to 7 p.m. on weekdays, and it also dishes late-night specials from 10 p.m. to midnight Sunday through Wednesday for good measure. That's (count 'em) 43 hours of discounted deliciousness. Five bucks will get you two Guinness-braised short rib tacos, two curried chicken sliders or crispy truffle fries. Six dollars is all that stands between you and a Celtic sangria made with Irish whiskey. For the high rollers, there's shepherds gnocchi with ground lamb for $7.

Rick's Tavern 2907 Main St., (310) 392-2772 “You don't HAVE to be a local to be treated like one here,” boasts the website for Rick's Tavern on Main, which has elevated its menu while maintaining its hometown feel since an ownership change about two years ago. Residents and tourists alike will find plenty to enjoy on the happy hour menu, which has a variety of pub staples to pair with $4 cabernets, chardonnays, well cocktails and draft beers. There are waffle fries served with spicy ranch dressing ($4), grilled hot wings for a buck each and grilled cheese on sourdough ($6).

Lula Cocina 2720 Main St., (310) 392-5711 From the moment you walk into Lula you are surrounded by museum quality artwork from some of Mexico’s finest and most well respected artists. Speaking of works of art, have you seen this tequila list? Yeah, they’ve got one of the best in North America with up to 300 varieties at any given time. Happy hour at this fine cantina is enough to inspire us all to sing Guantanamera! From 1 p.m. - 7 p.m. Sunday - Thursday and 1 p.m. - 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday you can enjoy a fiesta of the senses with $4 Mexican pizzas , cheese enchiladas, mini burritos and nachos as well as $4 draft beers and house margaritas.

he weather outside isn't frightful, that's why the Holiday Hop Along Pico is so delightful. From noon to 4 p.m. guests can enjoy refreshments, entertainment, shopping specials and art displays. The Pico Elves and Santa Claus himself will also be making appearances all along the boulevard.
