More travel options are available ity leaders in Santa Monica want to give people many options when it comes to traveling around town and beyond. “We are trying to help people understand they have choices,” said Francie Stefan, the Mobility Division Manager for the City of Santa Monica. Those “choices” include driving a car, taking the bus, riding the Expo Line train, and of course biking and walking.

City leaders in Santa Monica want to give people many options when it comes to traveling around town and beyond. “We are trying to help people understand they have choices,” said Francie Stefan, the Mobility Division Manager for the City of Santa Monica. Those “choices” include driving a car, taking the bus, riding the Expo Line train, and of course biking and walking. “We’re trying to make it convenient and comfortable and attractive to use lots of different means of getting around Santa Monica,” Stefan continued. “Roads
are not just for cars, they are for people and we all need to share it.” Local residents who still choose to drive a car out of convenience might run into hassles such as road congestion and difficulty finding a good parking spot in a popular city such as Santa Monica. Plus there are gas prices to pay and that provides extra expenses each week. “I think we are all realizing that sometimes driving is not the best choice,” Stefan stated. “Parking is incredibly expensive to provide and it’s also bad for a walking community. Part of the reason we want to provide options is so people won’t have to suffer trying to find parking spots.” One alternative to driving a car is taking the bus. Santa Monica’s Big Blue Bus Line offers 20 routes daily covering 53square miles. The cost for each ride is $1.25, with day-passes as well as monthly deals offered. About 30 percent of local residents use Big Blue at least a few times each month. “There are multiple bus routes that can take you from the eastern part of Santa Monica to the western part,” Stefan said. Metro Bus rides cost a little bit more — $1.75 per ride — and cover a lot of territory.
The Expo Line opened in May of 2016 and has proven a popular way or transportation. “Ridership has been very high,” Stefan noted. “The downtown (Santa Monica) station is in the top 10 of all metro systems. We have thousands of people using the station every day. It’s going really well.” The Expo Line goes from downtown Santa Monica to Culver City and eventually makes its way to downtown Los Angeles. The trip takes roughly 45 minutes. There are many train rides offered each day and the cost is $1.75. Senior services like Dial-a-Ride — a low-cost shared-ride service offering transportation around Santa Monica — are available to adults over 60 years old and disabled individuals 18 years and older. For local residents just looking to navigate around Santa Monica, two of the best ways include biking and walking. Two years ago the city started the “Breeze” bicycle share program with bicycles available to rent at designated areas throughout Santa Monica. “We started the Breeze bike share so people can randomly walk up to a bike station and try biking again for the first time in many years,” Stefan said. “So we’re trying to provide people with
opportunities to practice and enjoy other things.” Santa Monica has become very “bikefriendly” with more than 100 miles of bikeways and paths throughout the city and beach area. And there are plenty of roller skaters and skateboarders along the ocean paths as well. Walking is another great way to exercise and enjoy the great weather of Southern California. “Over the past few years we’ve seen an increase in the number of people who are choosing to walk and ride a bicycle,” Stefan said. “In Santa Monica it’s become more comfortable for bikers with more bike lanes and facilities to use. Biking in Santa Monica is a safe way to get around.” Safety is the primary concern with city leaders, and that’s why in 2016 a new plan called “Vision Zero” was adopted as part of the “Pedestrian Action Plan.” According to Stefan, the goal of “Vision Zero” is “to eliminate severe injuries and fatalities for all people on the roads. It’s a goal that says we put human life first, and everyone deserves to return home safely. It’s important for people to know the rules of the road when they are driving, biking, and walking.”

Beautifying Pico he best way to take in all the sights and sounds of Pico Blvd. is simply by walking or biking around the area. It’s a great way to explore all the diverse stores and businesses on the street. As people are strolling along Pico they are sure to notice the beautiful painted murals on the walls of neighborhood businesses. The murals represent the artistic side of Santa Monica, proudly on display for all to behold.
T
Beautify Earth, a local organization committed to installing art in communities, has been working with local civic and community leaders and the Pico Improvement Organization (PIO) for several years to create a safer, uplifting, and colorful street utilizing public art as a tool to empower artists, encourage social responsibility, and instill community pride. “We live in an urban atmosphere where there are a lot of walls surrounding us each day,” said Heather Rabun, co-founder of Beautify Earth. “Our goal is to bring artwork to those walls. If we can bring some color and inspiration and beauty to people’s commute, then we have inspired and brought peace into the community.” Rabun estimates there are at least 50 murals throughout the city, with almost 20 in the Pico Boulevard neighborhood alone. “This is about the ripple effect of bringing art to the public view,” Rabun said. “We want Santa Monica to be an example of what’s possible.” Investing in murals has countless benefits and massive ROI for businesses, tourism and the
city, with Beautify Earth recently honored by California Travel and Tourism because of such benefits. Check out some of these selected murals installed on local businesses on Pico Blvd. Have a wall or want to get involved? Contact BeautifyEarth.org.

Tips for a Sustainable Holiday on’t worry, you can still have a real Christmas tree, but if you think about it, the holidays can be one of most wasteful times of the year. Here are a few ways to reduce the impact on the environment this holiday season.
D
• Make your own edible gifts, such as baked goods, jams and cookies. Include a recipe for an added personal touch. • Look for heirloom and vintage gifts at thrift stores or Farmers Markets and think quality over quantity, like purchasing items that are long-lasting.
• DIY gift wrapping with fun construction paper, your free local newspaper or favorite magazines. Or skip wrapping altogether and simply tie a bow with ribbon or twine. • Skip the tinsel and avoid plastic decorations. Always use LED lights!
• Consider giving the gift of an experience over something physical. For example, a gift card to a favorite restaurant, theme park, concert or museum. • Broaden the definition of “giving” beyond the realm of presents and volunteer for a nonprofit or donate food, clothes and toys. • Support local and sustainable businesses. Visit www.smgbc.org/directory and www.buylocalsantamonica.com for a list of businesses.
“Happy Holidays to you and yours from the Sustainable Santa Monica team!”
