TrueCar upgrades TCS experience hen all you’re focused on is kicking back and relaxing as the sun sets over the Pacific and the palpable excitement of thousands of like-minded music lovers surrounds you, TCS can be a pretty intoxicating experience. It’s not just a chance to connect with the music you love played over the backdrop of the Pier’s iconic neon-framed beauty, it’s the promise of getting to lose yourself for a few precious hours of well-deserved bliss. What could be better? How, the oftrepeated challenge goes, can you top that? The answer is TCS 2.0 with its never-been-done-before, crowd-powered performance dreamed up by status-quo disrupter and presenting sponsor TrueCar in conjunction with motion graphics maven and artist Bradley G Munkowitz, otherwise known as GMUNK. “We’re delivering the kind of immersive experience that only an intelligent data company could,” said TrueCar CMO Lucas Donat. “It’s done by gathering all kinds of crowd-fed data as a response to the music and then converting it—in realtime—into color, intensity and form. There’ll also be huge lanterns framing the pier that will be responding to that very same data—all of it visible from the

W

beach down below to as far away as Venice. It’ll be quite a spectacle. And what’s really cool is that it’s not just interactive—it’s actually intelligent.” “This promises to be a unifying, tangible event that the totality of the pier will get to experience. In short,” continued Donat with a slight grin, “a natural fit for a company filled with those who see beauty in data, whose job it is to take mountains of information and arrange it into patterns and expressions that have meaning for people like you and me.” For those unfamiliar with TrueCar, it’s a company that’s managed to orchestrate huge volumes of data, streamlining the car buying experience into something that not only feels effortless but can actually be fun—which is a far cry from what most expect when getting ready to buy a car. With TrueCar, you get to see what others paid for the ride you’re pining for and then you get guaranteed savings off the MSRP from TrueCar Certified Dealers. “Santa Monica is our neighborhood,” said Donat, “and we love it. We started here in Silicon Beach with one office and now have five, all within a few short blocks of each other. I’m literally looking

at the ferris wheel on the pier as we speak. TCS is a celebration of this amazing community we call home.” Donat said his company takes its role as a Silicon Beach pioneer seriously. The company has grown from a handful of techies with a great idea to employing hundreds of locals. It was also one of the first in the area to transition from start-up to publicly traded company that has witnessed the sale of over 2 million cars from introductions made through its online marketplace. And that’s translated into making it a disruptor that can take a seat next to other innovators like AirBnB and Uber. The concert series organizers said partnering with a hometown business demonstrates the community-building power of TCS. "It's wonderful to see a Silicon Beach success story really connect with the people who live here,” said Pier Administrator S. Jay Farrand. “TrueCar brings a lot of energy to the concert series and understands that the way to connect with people is to imagine memorable ways to enhance their experience.” Farrand said the pier is pretty much as analog as a structure can be but its proximity to the wealth of technology

represented by Silicon Beach makes partnerships with companies like TrueCar a no-brainer. “This musical event depends on forward-thinking community partners like TrueCar. The simple truth is that such an amazing lineup of talent wouldn't be possible without them.” “All of us in Silicon Beach work so hard building game changing companies,” said Donat. “Sometimes we forget that we work blocks from the beach. TCS gives us an opportunity to get outside, go to the beach, listen to music, watch the sunset, get to know each other, and have some fun.”

'Atlas' puts Real Estate on the map he music video for Real Estate’s “Crime” is a bizarre menagerie, bringing together undead extreme sports enthusiasts, strange ceramic figurines and an old man’s nostalgia for the good old days in a piece dotted with segments of the band performing among diners in a Thai restaurant. It sounds fragmented and unwieldy, and it is — the Tom Scharpling-helmed project even features a farcical, “Office”-style introduction by comedian Andy Daly and a cameo by actor Nick Kroll. But before you start wondering whether the band is having an identity crisis or whether the video is the result of unresolved artistic differences, listen to the song itself. There’s a rhythmic beauty and a soothing melody carrying Martin Courtney’s airy but grounded vocals, all emblematic of the New Jersey outfit’s sound and style. Real Estate manages to blend the instrumental waves of Explosions in the Sky with the contemplative lyrics of Pedro the Lion and the Postal Service, creating an indie rock essence that would’ve fit in well alongside The Shins and Nick Drake on the mood-stirring “Garden State” movie soundtrack. It’s an aura that will probably sound familiar to fans of Death Cab for Cutie — and one that will translate seamlessly into the group’s live show during the Twilight Concert Series at Santa Monica Pier. “Real Estate have always been a band aware of their own strengths, and many of their best qualities — subtlety, melodic precision, graceful interplay of voice and guitar — have sharpened over time,” gushed Matthew Murphy of Pitchfork, which included the group’s latest release, “Atlas,” on its list of the top 100 albums of the first half of the decade. The album, Real Estate’s third and most cohesive to date, explores the themes of change, growth and the passage of time. So it’s certainly fitting that the album’s cover features sections of a mural by Polish artist Stefan Knapp that dominated the facade of a New Jersey

REAL ESTATE

department store near where band members grew up. The 280-panel, 250ton creation — once regarded as the largest mural in the world — depicted an abstract map of the world. And although it has been taken down, it holds a special place in the hearts of the people who saw it in their daily lives. The band’s pensive, nostalgic vibe is clearly evident on “Had to Hear,” the album’s opening cut. It’s a relaxed composition that’s gentle but substantive, delicate but purposeful. On “Atlas,” Real Estate has seemingly found comfort in a brand of music it’s honed since releasing a self-titled LP in 2009 and “Days” in 2011. (Scharpling also directed the video for “Easy,” the sophomore album’s lead track.) “We wanted to make a cleaner, more well-rehearsed record that reflected the way we’ve come together as a live band

over the last few years,” Courtney says. “Basically we wanted to make a better record than ‘Days’ without changing the general structure of who we are as a band.” If Real Estate is all about location, location, location, then the band has seemingly taken that philosophy to heart. Last year, after releasing “Atlas,” the group performed across the U.S. as well as in Mexico, England, Chile and Argentina. Real Estate played in Los Angeles at last year’s FYF Fest, highlighting a lineup that also included Phoenix and Interpol. With performances on the “Late Show with David Letterman” and “Conan” already under its belt, the band recently opened for Belle and Sebastian at New York’s famed Radio City Music Hall. And even as members of the band continue

work on their solo projects, they’re primed for a memorable evening as the headlining act in another iconic setting — this time on the other side of the country, outside, with the sun setting over the Pacific Ocean. Opening for Real Estate is Hippo Campus, a group of young indie rockers who attended the same performing arts high school in Minnesota. Hippo Campus, which has drawn comparisons to Vampire Weekend, is touring in support of “Bashful Creatures,” its debut EP. Named for a part of the brain that is crucial to memory, the band made its national television debut with a performance of “Suicide Saturday” on “Conan” in March. “I like these guys,” Conan O’Brien says at the end of the song. Here’s guessing you might, too.

REAL ESTATE with HIPPO CAMPUS The most collaborative Real Estate record to date, Atlas was written by Martin Courtney, Matt Mondanile, Alex Bleeker and Jackson Pollis while cruising through the Arizona desert and during a presser in Madrid, in a practice room in Greenpoint, Brooklyn and in an attic in the band's hometown of Ridgewood, New Jersey. It was recorded in the summer of 2013 in Chicago with Tom Shick (Sean Lennon, Low, Cibo Matto) at Wilco's loft studio where new member Matt Kallman (formerly of Girls) joined the fold on keyboards. Over the course of five years of collaboration and friendship Courtney, Matt Mondanile and Alex Bleeker have honed a masterfully focused aesthetic feel and unique sense of atmosphere in their work, a kind of subtle American impressionism that belies their relatively small discography. Theirs is a subtly inimitable sound that achieves a unique timelessness in its assured identity. Nevertheless, Atlas does not represent a resting on the laurels of Days.

“We wanted to make a cleaner, more well-rehearsed record that reflected the way we've come together as a live band over the last few years”, explains Courtney. “Basically we wanted to make a better record than Days without changing the general structure of who we are as a band.” The songs of Atlas still unfurl in iridescent, warm webs of Courtney and Mondanile's guitar, they're still anchored by Bleeker's nimble bass and they're still patient and deliberate ebbing and flowing, frequently building to moments of euphoric release in a way that feels perfectly organic. Likewise the band's searching, human songwriting still illuminates the quiet, important moments of life in exquisitely minimal language. Intimate and spare, these ten new songs unfold as one impossibly warm, enveloping suite - conjuring quiet, late-night drives down wooded highways, rural rambles with friends (and maybe a love interest) on the sunniest afternoons of the year, and hazy summer evenings spent alone, thinking back to those times and the people who were with you for them. You can catch glints of Galaxie 500, Little Wings, Luna, Neu, Nick Drake, and

Pavement, and also the art of Fairfield Porter, Milton Avery, and Albert York. It's precise, taut and uniquely American, cut through with a melancholia that can feel variously heartbreaking and newly wise. SEE BIOS PAGE 10

WEEK 3 ~ JULY 23

¡CUBANISMO! with CHICANO BATMAN Jesús Alemañy , founder of Latin orchestra ¡Cubanismo!, came to fame as a brilliant 15- year old trumpet player for the iconic Cuban son group Sierra Maestra. The all-star ¡Cubanismo! orchestra plays sizzling dance tunes full of swaggering horn charts and wild polyrhythms that recall the vintage bigband son sound, traditional rumba, chacha and lesser known danzon and pa’ca rhythms arranged in the descarga (jam) tradition developed by Cuban jazz players of the ‘40s. The expression cubanismo designates something specifically Cuban, or unique to the island and not common to the general Spanish culture of Latin America. Utterly different from the genre known as Latin jazz, ¡Cubanismo! features danceable music from beginning to end, celebrating the legacy of Cuban music in other dance styles from around the world. The Cuban son, which dates back to the turn of the century, is the root of much of the up-tempo international pop music, from African soukous to New York salsa. ¡Cubanismo! takes you on a journey to the dancing heart of Latin music. The 15piece orchestra of Cuban all-stars showcases the bright tropical blasts of Cuba's hottest dance music. Led by Jesús Alemañy, the brilliant young trumpeter formerly of Sierra Maestra, the band features famed conguero "Tata" Güines, Orlando "Maracas" Valle; saxophonist Yosvany Terry from Los Terry, his family's Afro-Cuban group; the great Cuban bassist Carlos del Puerto; and tres player Pancho Amat. The all-star percussion

lineup boasts the venerable "Tata" Güines and Roberto Vizcaino on tumbadoras (conga drums), and the alwaysinventive timbalero Emilio del Monte. Together, they punch out an irresistible blend of freewheeling dance tunes. "Powerhouse all-star touring band that plays a repertoire of traditional Cuban music from a variety of genres."

AMERICANA

WEEK 4 ~ JULY 30

JD MCPHERSON with SARAH GAYLE MEECH You could mistake JD McPherson for a revivalist, given how few other contemporary artists are likely to assert, as he boldly does, that “'Keep a Knockin' by Little Richard is the best record ever made. It's so insanely visceral, you feel like it's going to explode your speakers. If I'm listening to that in the car, I find myself having to brake suddenly. I can listen to that and it makes me feel like I'm 20 feet tall. And the feeling of joy I get from that record is always going to be the real push behind trying to make music.” For his most recent record, McPherson wanted to maintain raw power while also capturing the more mysterious side of the records he loves. To that slightly spookier end, he enlisted as a collaborator Mark Neill, known for his work as a producer and engineer with versed-inthe-past acts going back to the Paladins in the 1980s, but, most recently, for recording The Black Keys and Dan Auerbach-a friend of McPherson's who co-wrote the new album's “Bridge Builder.” Talking up one of the freshly minted tunes, “Bridge Builder,” McPherson describes it as being “the psychedelic Coasters.” That no such thing really existed prior to this album doesn't deter him. “This is something I actually talked

JD MCPHERSON

¡CUBANISMO!

about with Mark at the beginning of the record: 'I want to make a '50s psychedelic record!'” McPherson certainly doesn't begrudge the attention that Signs & Signifiers unexpectedly brought him. “If it hadn't been for the 'North Side Gal' video, this probably never would have caught on,” he says, recalling the fame he found on YouTube even before Rounder picked up his indie release. “That's how we found our label and found our management. I was still teaching school, and here I am with got this video that's like a million hits. I'm like, what? I had no plans to quit my job. Luckily, I lost it.” A middle school art department's loss was Rounder's and the rock world's gain. Since the debut album came out, McPherson has played for a lot of genre nerds who pick up on every single influence. But he and his band have also opened for acts ranging from Bob Seger (getting a standing ovation at an arena in Detroit, the headliner's hometown) to the Dave Matthews Band to Nick Lowe to Eric Church (who sought him out to write some songs together). For a Halloween night 2014 show at the Forum in L.A., super-fan Josh Homme, one of McPherson's biggest supporters, handpicked him to open for Queens of the Stone Age. These may not all seem like natural pairings, but the music is primal and melodic enough that, after a few minutes, it never fails to make sense even to audiences with the least of expectations and musical educations.

BEN BROWNING OF CUT COPY with DMA'S A pulsating solo effort from electronic pop crooning man-child and Cut Copy bassist Ben Browning is the shiniest, newest addition to the Cutters stable of artists. Prior to starting on Cut Copy's most recent album Zonoscope, Ben Browning dug into his trusty mind-hole and began penning tracks for a solo release, culminating in the new 12-inch EP which is to be released by Cutters Records. I Can't Stay is the lead single, taken from Browning's forthcoming EP on Cutters records. It opens with an almost calypso guitar lead, before opening up into bouncing bass driven clubpop, the likes of which wouldn't have been entirely out of place on the recent Cut Copy album. The vocal is trademark Ben Browning: delicately strained melodic and harmonic stylings, with a seeming fragility which belies its true versatility. The talents of Architecture In Helsinki's Gus Franklin and Haima Marriott were enlisted to add production and shimmer, with Franklin even laying down livedrums on the final recording. Meanwhile, Cut Copy's own Dan Whitford reached into his collection of vintage synths to provide keyboard programming, producing some of the the classic keyboard SEE BIOS PAGE 12

Cutters' own Knightlife, who has made spacey disco bliss his stock in trade, has transformed this into and epic, infectious melodic house gem. And DFA's Juan Maclean opts for an energized version, more faithful to the original, much like classic expertly finessed dance mixes of old.

DMA’S DMA'S is the musical project of Johnny Took, Matt Mason & Tommy O'Dell - three best friends from Newtown, Australia. Having cut their teeth playing with a number of different bands in Sydney's inner west over the years, the trio began writing and recording demos in Johnny's bedroom around 2 years ago. Set on taking their time to hone their craft and sound, the three friends soon found themselves with a library of nearly 40 demos. Finally content with the identity that the songs had taken, DMA'S released their debut single in February this year in the form of a track simply titled 'Delete' (along with a short film by director Mitchell Grant that was filmed in Johnny's bedroom - the same location that the band recorded and produced the track) and despite having never played a show under this moniker, the reaction was instantly overwhelming as critics and fans alike proceeded to jump on board - including Dave Rowntree of Blur (who awarded them his record of the week on XFM, comparing them to Arctic Monkeys & Oasis), Triple J and NME Magazine. It would seem that word continued to quickly spread around their hometown of Sydney - illustrated by the band's first show drawing over 450 punters and leaving another 100 or so unable to get in! From that point DMA'S have hit the touring circuit of Australia, selling out multiple rooms around the country and getting the call up to played the respected Splendour in the Grass Festival - sharing the stage with acts such as Interpol and Future Islands.

SISTER NANCY with JESSE ROYAL Ophlin Russell-Myers is a dancehall DJ and singer from Kingston, Jamaica that performs as Sister Nancy. As one of 15 siblings she shares her musical talent with older brother Robert who has carved out a successful career of his own performing as Brigadier Jerry. She developed her skills as a teen working with her brother and was discovered by producer Winston Riley in 1980, resulting in her first single, "Papa Dean" for his Techniques label. She was the first woman to perform at Reggae Sunsplash and was the first

Jamaican woman to tour internationally as a deejay. Her career grew into strong of hits, live performances and international shows. In 1996 she relocated to America. After a break from the recording industry, she released a new album in 2007.

ARIEL PINK with THE MYNABIRDS Across its 17 tracks and 69 minutes, pom pom, the most recent record by Ariel Pink, is unfiltered Ariel, a pied piper of the absurd, with infectious tales of romance, murder, frog princes and JellO. The record sees the Los Angeles native strike it out alone, returning to the solo

moniker he has adopted for well over a decade when cementing his name as a king of pop perversion. From demented kiddie tune collaborations with the legendary Kim Fowley (songs like 'Jell-O' and 'Plastic Raincoats In The Pig Parade' were written with Fowley in his hospital room during his recent battle with cancer), to beatific, windswept pop ('Put Your Number In My Phone', 'Dayzed Inn Daydreams'), scuzzpunk face-melters ('Goth Bomb', 'Negativ Ed'), and carnival dub psychedelia ('Dinosaur Carebears'), pom pom could very well be Ariel Pink's magnum opus. “Although this is the first “solo” record credited to my name, it is by far the least “solo” record I have ever recorded,” said Ariel Pink. pom pom is Ariel Pink's third studio album for 4AD, following his Haunted Graffiti releases Before Today (2010) and Mature Themes (2012).

BIOS FROM PAGE 12 music continues well into the 21st century. In 1974 Mr. Kantner created Jefferson Starship and again enjoyed chart-topping success. Paul, & Jefferson Airplane were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, the same year as Pink Floyd. Jefferson Starship, the name created by Paul for his 1971 solo debut “Blows Against The Empire” recording, has endured 40 years as one of rock's most legendary bands. That recording was the first and only to ever be nominated for literary science fiction's Hugo Award. Co-founder David Freiberg also started the legendary Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Fillmore era San Francisco band who often shared the bill with The Dead & The Airplane). David is a world famous singer, producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He was also a member of Jefferson Airplane, and co-wrote one of Jefferson Starship's alltime biggest hits, “Jane” - which he performs. From 1973 to 1978 Donny Baldwin was with the "Elvin Bishop" Band. During this time he toured and recorded six albums, which included the #1 hit single, "Fooled Around and Fell In Love". From 1981 to 1989, Donny was a member of Jefferson Starship. In January 1994, he joined the Jerry Garcia Band. Chris Smith joined Jefferson Starship in 1998, having toured with The Supremes and Lou Bega. Chris has gone on to place music in film and television includ-

ing the #1 rated series “CSI.” In 2000 he assumed the seeming impossible task of playing piano and (synth) bass simultaneously … a feat only duplicated by the legendary Ray Manzarek of The Doors. Cathy Richardson joined Jefferson Starship in 2008, and anchors the historic 'role' made famous by Grace Slick. She is an award winning music artist, graphic artist, and clothing designer. Her professional credits include fronting her own successful rock band, producing and releasing seven albums on various indie record labels. She was nominated for a Grammy Award for Art Direction of her band's 2003 release, “The Road to Bliss,” which also received two DIY Awards (Do It Yourself in Film, Books and Music) for Album Art of the Year and Producer of the Year. Jude Gold is an acclaimed lead guitarist joining in 2012 for a 10 country, three-month international tour - replacing longtime lead player Slick Aguilar who recently underwent a liver transplant. Jude also tours with contemporary stars Miguel Migs, Stu Hamm and JGB (Jerry Garcia's Band) before that. He is also a “professor” at the acclaimed Musician's Institute in Los Angeles.

Since its release, the record hit #1 and has been at the top of both the CMJ & Jazz Week Radio charts. Whether seen on HBO's Treme or at their legendary Tuesday night gig at The Maple Leaf, Rebirth Brass Band is a true New Orleans institution. Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they also extended into the realms of funk and hip hop to create their signature soul moving sound. Their signature brand of heavy funk has not only won over several generations of music lovers, it has become

the soundtrack to an entire city. Rebirth Brass Band's album “Rebirth of New Orleans” earned them the title of the first brass band ever to win a Grammy. ”Rebirth of New Orleans” reached #9 on the Billboard Jazz Chart and #1 on the CMJ Jazz Charts. Rebirth has several cameos on the hit HBO series Treme as well as many soundtrack contributions. Ditch the ride for a stress-free time BIKE IT, WALK IT OR BUS IT TO TWILIGHT CONCERTS veryone knows that parking blows in Santa Monica, but you don’t have to give up on the city by the sea. Just leave the car at home and walk, bike or bus it down to the Santa Monica Pier for this summer’s edition of the famous landmark’s 31st annual Twilight Concert Series. The most convenient way to play is by hopping on your beach cruiser, using pedal power. It’s a great way to lose weight, stay in shape and avoid traffic jams Downtown. The city by the sea has an extensive network of bike lanes; a Downtown Bike Center complete with showers, lockers and a repair shop; as well as a free bike valet just south of the pier for those attending the concerts. It’s right off the beach bike path for easy access. If you are riding from the northern side of town, Montana Avenue to Ocean Avenue is a great route with plenty of scenery. You may want to use one of the walk bridges that connect Palisades Park to the beach bike path or take it all the way to the pier’s entrance at Colorado Avenue and walk it down to the valet. If you are coming from the south, try Main Street, Neilson Way (which turns into Ocean Avenue at Pico Boulevard) or
