TCS has a history of building community ince its inception 31 years ago, the Twilight Concert Series has stood on its own as the premier outdoor summer concert festival in Southern California, attracting thousands of people every Thursday for a free show under the stars and over the ocean. Its roots can be traced to an eightday-long event held to promote the pier after one-third of it was taken out by the 1983 storms, including the entire west end. Save the Pier Week was organized in May of that year to correct the public perception that the pier was no longer standing because of the violent storms just two months prior, hosting a festival that featured a series of concerts, art exhibits, dances and competitions. The success of the event led to the realization that the pier made a perfect venue for concerts and TCS was born in 1985. The concert has been located on different parts of the pier over the years, moving around the reconstruction work from the storm, starting on the asphalt and later relocating to the panhandle. The 2015 marks the debut of the new stage and interactive light exhibit. TCS has earned a reputation as one of

S

the premiere outdoor summer concerts in the country. The shows go on with a variety of bands playing in different genres and regardless of weather, the economy or politics. The event, and accompanying beach scene isn't just a concert but a gathering place for the community, an event where neighbors and friends can catch up. For local businesses, The Twilight Concert Series partnerships and sponsorships are an opportunity to reinvest in their own back yards. OneWest Bank was founded as a regional bank in Southern California dedicated to customer service and a commitment to the community. The company operates retail branches from San Diego to Ventura County and offers extensive services to businesses including loans, deposit and payment solutions. The company has grown into a regional leader through a steady commitment to engaging with its customers and Jeffrey A. Shular, Executive Vice President of OneWest's Retail Banking Group said supporting an event like TCS is a reflection of the company's desire to strengthen community. “We feel very proud to be part of the of one the most popular summer events

in Los Angeles where families can come, enjoy great music and celebrate this awesome part of the country that we all live in,” he said. TCS is known far and wide for encompassing all musical styles and genres in a way that makes the summer series feel more like a festival than a one-day-aweek show. By catering to all tastes, the concerts have become a communitywide gathering including people of different cultures, ages, beliefs and backgrounds. “Santa Monica is a unique, diverse community known for its iconic arts culture and booming tech sector,” notes Ken Muche, head of public relations for Verizon Wireless in Southern California. “So, when we opened our first Destination Store on the west coast on the Third Street Promenade, Verizon's support of The Twilight Concert Series was a natural fit. As the newest business to move into the neighborhood, we look forward to meeting local residents and visitors throughout the summer concert series.” Pier Administrator Jay Farrand said TCS is a perfect example of what the Pier brings to the community. “I think that TCS is compelling

because it combines great talent with an historic venue and the natural beauty of Santa Monica which can't really be replicated anywhere else,” he said. “And during a moment when we read about rising housing prices and stagnating wages, it's a rare democratic experience that everyone can enjoy regardless of income, background or age. If communities don't develop opportunities for their members to meet each other on an equal playing field, it can heighten segmentation and feelings of disconnectedness. And for visitors, it's a great way to sample the iconic SoCal beach lifestyle and bring home some great stories about Santa Monica.”

¡Cubanismo! brings island magic s a child growing up in Havana, Alemany’s earliest musical influences came from his relatives. “My influences came first from my family and family life,” said Alemany, “I had two uncles that were musicians, and sisters [that] greatly influenced me as well.” Havana’s musical atmosphere would ignite an interest in Alemany that continues to inspire a lifelong passion. “My home, my country stands as [my] foundation,” said Alemany. Alemany’s experience prompted him to found ¡Cubanismo!, the 14piece Cuban orchestra that returns as the third performer in the 2015 Twilight Concert Series. The expression ¡Cubanismo! designates something specifically Cuban. It is unique to the island and not common to the general Spanish culture of Latin America. As a genre apart from Latin Jazz, ¡Cubanismo! features music steeped in dance. The group channels a style of music known as Son cubano (Cuban Rhythm) that originated in Cuba during the 1930’s and serves as the foundation of many forms of music such as African Soukous and Salsa that are popular worldwide. Reminiscent of the improvisational descarga (jam) sessions that emerged in Cuba in the 1940s, ¡Cubanismo! mixes vintage Danzon, Rumba, and Cha-Cha to bring back the descarga (jam) tradition in a fresh format. To bring the Son cubano to life, trumpet maestro Jesus Alemany personally sought out fellow Cuban expatriates Jose Pinera and Jorge Luis “Rojitas” Gonzales (vocals), Timbale phenom- Antonio “Pacha” Portuondo, Trombonist Daniel Lopez, Arys Montenegro (bongos), and Gabriel “Gabo” Hernandez on piano. Audience can expect a high energy show, said Alemany, between performers hand picked to bring this project back to life. The musicians will treat the audience to “not only great Cuban music but a mixture of styles and influences too,” added Alemany. ¡Cubanismo! has always been received warmly by Santa Monicans, said Alemany, who recalled meeting many

A

musicians who are now his friends during the group’s first trip to the city. “The people [here] have always embraced me and my band with open arms,” he said. The group last played on the pier almost twenty years ago. “Back on Cubanismo’s first tour in 1997 we were blessed to perform at the Santa Monica Pier,” recalled Alemany, who remembers the show fondly for the energizing natural surroundings. “I remember when we played at the Pier...it was a great show because we had Nature’s Canvas behind our fans,” said Alemany, “to have the sunset was all we needed to play harder and better.”

¡Cubanismo! returns to the Santa Monica Pier for the first time in almost twenty years for the 2015 TCS, and Alemany can’t wait to return to this special venue. “I'm am extremely excited for this opportunity to perform at the Santa Monica Pier again after all these years,” said Alemany, “It is a magical place and to have the ocean and sunset as we perform is like no where else.” When asked about the benefits of playing near the ocean, Alemany said “The weather of course...to have it at the beach overlooking the ocean - this would be any artist’s dream.” Although native to

Cuba, Alemany looks forward eagerly to the performance.“I’m very excited to return,” said Alemany “it feels like coming home.”

¡CUBANISMO! with CHICANO BATMAN Jesús Alemañy , founder of Latin orchestra ¡Cubanismo!, came to fame as a brilliant 15- year old trumpet player for the iconic Cuban son group Sierra Maestra. The all-star ¡Cubanismo! orchestra plays sizzling dance tunes full of swaggering horn charts and wild polyrhythms that recall the vintage bigband son sound, traditional rumba, chacha and lesser known danzon and pa’ca rhythms arranged in the descarga (jam) tradition developed by Cuban jazz players of the ‘40s. The expression cubanismo designates something specifically Cuban, or unique to the island and not common to the general Spanish culture of Latin America. Utterly different from the genre known as Latin jazz, ¡Cubanismo! features danceable music from beginning to end, celebrating the legacy of Cuban music in other dance styles from around the world. The 15piece orchestra of Cuban all-stars showcases the bright tropical blasts of Cuba's hottest dance music. Led by Jesús Alemañy, the brilliant young trumpeter formerly of Sierra Maestra, the band features famed conguero "Tata" Güines, Orlando "Maracas" Valle; saxophonist Yosvany Terry from Los Terry, his family's Afro-Cuban group; the great Cuban bassist Carlos del Puerto; and tres player Pancho Amat. The all-star percussion lineup boasts the venerable "Tata" Güines and Roberto Vizcaino on tumbadoras (conga drums), and the alwaysinventive timbalero Emilio del Monte. WEEK 4 ~ JULY 30

JD MCPHERSON with SARAH GAYLE MEECH You could mistake JD McPherson for a revivalist, given how few other contemporary artists are likely to assert, as he boldly does, that “'Keep a Knockin' by Little Richard is the best record ever made. It's so insanely visceral, you feel like it's going to explode your speakers. If I'm listening to that in the car, I find myself having to brake suddenly. I can listen to that and it makes me feel like I'm 20 feet tall. And the feeling of joy I get from that record is always going to be the real push behind trying to make music.” For his most recent record, McPherson wanted to maintain raw power while also capturing the more mysterious side of the records he loves. To that slightly spookier end, he enlisted as a collaborator Mark Neill, known for his work as a producer and engineer with versed-inthe-past acts going back to the Paladins in the 1980s, but, most recently, for recording The Black Keys and Dan Auerbach-a friend of McPherson's who co-wrote the new album's “Bridge Builder.” Talking up one of the freshly minted tunes, “Bridge Builder,” McPherson describes it as being “the psychedelic Coasters.” That no such thing really existed prior to this album doesn't deter him. “This is something I actually talked about with Mark at the beginning of the record: 'I want to make a '50s psychedelic record!'” McPherson certainly doesn't begrudge the attention that Signs & Signifiers unexpectedly brought him. “If it hadn't been for the 'North Side Gal' video, this probably never would have caught on,” he says, recalling the fame he found on YouTube even before Rounder picked up his indie release. “That's how we found our label and found our management. I was still teaching school, and here I am with got this video that's like a million hits. I'm like, what? I had no plans to

JD MCPHERSON

quit my job. Luckily, I lost it.” A middle school art department's loss was Rounder's and the rock world's gain. Since the debut album came out, McPherson has played for a lot of genre nerds who pick up on every single influence. But he and his band have also opened for acts ranging from Bob Seger (getting a standing ovation at an arena in Detroit, the headliner's hometown) to the Dave Matthews Band to Nick Lowe to Eric Church (who sought him out to write some songs together). For a Halloween night 2014 show at the Forum in L.A., super-fan Josh Homme, one of McPherson's biggest supporters, handpicked him to open for Queens of the Stone Age. These may not all seem like natural pairings, but the music is primal and melodic enough that, after a few minutes, it never fails to make sense even to audiences with the least of expectations and musical educations. WEEK 5 ~ AUGUST 6

BEN BROWNING OF CUT COPY with DMA'S A pulsating solo effort from electronic pop crooning man-child and Cut Copy bassist Ben Browning is the shiniest, newest addition to the Cutters stable of artists. Prior to starting on Cut Copy's most recent album Zonoscope, Ben Browning dug into his trusty mind-hole and began penning tracks for a solo release, culminating in the new 12-inch EP which is to be released by Cutters Records. I Can't Stay is the lead single, taken from Browning's forthcoming EP

on Cutters records. It opens with an almost calypso guitar lead, before opening up into bouncing bass driven clubpop, the likes of which wouldn't have been entirely out of place on the recent Cut Copy album. The vocal is trademark Ben Browning: delicately strained melodic and harmonic stylings, with a seeming fragility which belies its true versatility. The talents of Architecture In Helsinki's Gus Franklin and Haima Marriott were enlisted to add production and shimmer, with Franklin even laying down livedrums on the final recording. Meanwhile, Cut Copy's own Dan Whitford reached into his collection of vintage synths to provide keyboard programming, producing some of the the classic keyboard

tones herein. What's that you say? You wanna dance? Never fear, the single is rounded out by two energetic remixes of the lead track I Can't Stay. Cutters' own Knightlife, who has made spacey disco bliss his stock in trade, has transformed this into and epic, infectious melodic house gem. And DFA's Juan Maclean opts for an energized version, more faithful to the original, much like classic expertly finessed dance mixes of old.

Having cut their teeth playing with a number of different bands in Sydney's inner west over the years, the trio began writing and recording demos in Johnny's bedroom around 2 years ago. Set on taking their time to hone their craft and sound, the three friends soon found themselves with a library of nearly 40 demos. Finally content with the identity that the songs had taken, DMA'S released their debut single in February this year in the form of a track simply titled 'Delete' (along with a short film by director Mitchell Grant that was filmed in Johnny's bedroom - the same location that the band recorded and produced the track) and despite having never played a show under this moniker, the reaction was instantly overwhelming as critics and fans alike proceeded to jump on board - including Dave Rowntree of Blur (who awarded them his record of the week on XFM, comparing them to Arctic Monkeys & Oasis), Triple J and NME Magazine. It would seem that word continued to quickly spread around their hometown of Sydney - illustrated by the band's first show drawing over 450 punters and leaving another 100 or so unable to get in! From that point DMA'S have hit the touring circuit of Australia, selling out multiple rooms around the country and getting the call up to played the respected Splendour in the Grass Festival - sharing the stage with acts such as Interpol and Future Islands. ARIEL PINK with THE MYNABIRDS Across its 17 tracks and 69 minutes, pom pom, the most recent record by Ariel Pink, is unfiltered Ariel, a pied piper of the absurd, with infectious tales of romance, murder, frog princes and JellO. The record sees the Los Angeles native strike it out alone, returning to the solo moniker he has adopted for well over a decade when cementing his name as a king of pop perversion. From demented kiddie tune collaborations with the legendary Kim Fowley (songs like 'Jell-O' and 'Plastic Raincoats In The Pig Parade' were written with Fowley in his hospital room during his recent battle with cancer), to beatific, windswept pop ('Put Your Number In My

Phone', 'Dayzed Inn Daydreams'), scuzzpunk face-melters ('Goth Bomb', 'Negativ Ed'), and carnival dub psychedelia ('Dinosaur Carebears'), pom pom could very well be Ariel Pink's magnum opus. “Although this is the first “solo” record credited to my name, it is by far the least “solo” record I have ever recorded,” said Ariel Pink. pom pom is Ariel Pink's third studio album for 4AD, following his Haunted Graffiti releases Before Today (2010) and Mature Themes (2012).

Paul Kantner founded Jefferson Airplane in 1965. The Airplane were the biggest rock group in America during the 1960s and the first San Francisco band to sign a major record deal, paving the way for other legends like Grateful Dead & Janis Joplin. They headlined the original

Woodstock Festival in 1969 and like The Beatles with whom they are critically compared, lasted a mere seven years ... though their influence and impact on rock music continues well into the 21st century. In 1974 Mr. Kantner created Jefferson Starship and again enjoyed chart-topping success. Paul, & Jefferson Airplane were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, the same year as Pink Floyd. Co-founder David Freiberg also started the legendary Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Fillmore era San Francisco band who often shared the bill with The Dead & The Airplane). David is a world famous singer, producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He was also a member of Jefferson Airplane, and co-wrote one of Jefferson Starship's alltime biggest hits, “Jane” - which he performs. From 1973 to 1978 Donny Baldwin was with the "Elvin Bishop" Band. During this time he toured and recorded six albums, which included the #1 hit single, "Fooled Around and Fell In Love". From 1981 to 1989, Donny was a member of Jefferson Starship. In January 1994, he joined the Jerry Garcia Band. Chris Smith joined Jefferson Starship in 1998, having toured with The Supremes and Lou Bega. Chris has gone on to place music in film and television including the #1 rated series “CSI.” In 2000 he assumed the seeming impossible task of playing piano and (synth) bass simultaneously … a feat only duplicated by the legendary Ray Manzarek of The Doors. Cathy Richardson joined Jefferson Starship in 2008, and anchors the historic 'role' made famous by Grace Slick. She is an award winning music artist, graphic artist, and clothing designer. Her professional credits include fronting her own successful rock band, producing and releasing seven albums on various indie record labels. She was nominated for a Grammy Award for Art Direction of her band's 2003 release, “The Road to Bliss,” which also received two DIY Awards (Do It Yourself in Film, Books and Music) for Album Art of the Year and Producer of the Year. Jude Gold is an acclaimed lead guitarist joining in 2012 for a 10 country, three-month international tour - replacing longtime lead player Slick Aguilar who recently underwent a liver transplant. Jude also tours with contemporary stars Miguel Migs, Stu Hamm and JGB (Jerry Garcia's Band) before that. He is also a “professor” at the acclaimed Musician's Institute in Los Angeles.

Ditch the ride for a stress-free time BIKE IT, WALK IT OR BUS IT TO TWILIGHT CONCERTS veryone knows that parking blows in Santa Monica, but you don’t have to give up on the city by the sea. Just leave the car at home and walk, bike or bus it down to the Santa Monica Pier for this summer’s edition of the famous landmark’s 31st annual Twilight Concert Series. The most convenient way to play is by hopping on your beach cruiser, using pedal power. It’s a great way to lose weight, stay in shape and avoid traffic jams Downtown. The city by the sea has an extensive network of bike lanes; a Downtown Bike Center complete with showers, lockers and a repair shop; as well as a free bike valet just south of the pier for those attending the concerts. It’s right off the beach bike path for easy access. If you are riding from the northern side of town, Montana Avenue to Ocean Avenue is a great route with plenty of scenery. You may want to use one of the walk bridges that connect Palisades Park to the beach bike path or take it all the way to the pier’s entrance at Colorado Avenue and walk it down to the valet. If you are coming from the south, try Main Street, Neilson Way (which turns into Ocean Avenue at Pico Boulevard) or

for a great view of the ocean hit Barnard Way. Make sure to turn west on Bicknell Avenue to get to the beach bike path for the last mile or so. Those coming from the east side of town by bike should take bike lanes on Arizona Avenue or Broadway for a stressfree ride. Both streets hit Ocean Avenue, which will lead you straight to the pier entrance. Always remember that a white head light and red back light are required when riding at night and that it is illegal to ride on sidewalks or fail to stop at all traffic signals and stop signs. Helmets are not required for adults, but they are recommended. You just might need that brain of yours. And don’t forget to bring a trusty, strong U-lock to secure your cycle if you decide to stop off for some snacks before the shows. Routes from most Santa Monica neighborhoods end in Downtown, so no matter which route you take you’ll be able to get to the pier by walking only a short distance. Rapid 3 and local Route 3 run along Lincoln Boulevard serving Santa Monica, Venice, Marina del Rey and LAX.
