Good food to accompany good times here's nothing like a beach picnic. From the sweat inducing cooler-carry car to the mid-meal staring contest with seagulls just waiting to swoop in if you blink to cleaning encrusted potato salad out of bowls at the end of the night, it's a good time. But perhaps you don't consider sand an essential seasoning on your sandwich, maybe you like hot foods served actually hot or maybe you're a grown adult who would like an adult beverage with your meal. Fortunately, there are crowds of happy restaurateurs eager to meet your culinary needs on Thursday nights. The Pier has partnered with several expert eaters including My Table, Whole Foods, the Albright, and Al Mare. The Albright and Al Mare have been staples on the Pier, and at TCS, for years. Both restaurants underwent revisions in recent years and both are offering specials on Thursday nights. Greg Morena of the Albright said the restaurant rebranded recently and has doubled down on its nautical roots with the acquisition of the Popeye character for use in their branding. He said the mix of food, drinks and music is an experience like no other. “It's a wonderful orchestra,” he said. “The retail locations, activations, concert flow and the mix of offerings are all keys to the success of the event. Give people what they want, make them happy. Sounds simple but it's a very delicate balance and a constant work-in-progress, all carefully mastered by Pier Management and The City.” Morena said the recently rebranded Albright sees TCS as an opportunity to connect with the friends the restaurant has made over its 37 year history. “TCS is tradition. The Albright, 37 years young, is all about tradition. The nautical, Albright knot (which ties two cords together), connects The Albright with The Pier family and makes so many people happy, for us this is the best part of TCS.” Adjacent to the Albright is Al Mare and given the food, ambiance and live music, has become a locals’ favorite with or without the TCS shows. The restaurant is

T

also popular with tourists from all over the world, with its sumptuous food and spectacular views. “Historic landmarks don’t get new spaces and offerings very often, so we’re excited that Al Mare could be the pier’s first fine dining restaurant,” said the pier’s Executive Director Jay Farrand. “Their food is amazing and so is their venue with roof-top dining, so it’s a real milestone in the evolution of the pier. We want to cater to a broad audience of diverse tastes and Al Mare really helps fill in the gap for people looking for a higher-end Italian dining experience. Things are changing quickly around here, so whether it’s new restaurants arriving or existing ones reinventing themselves, when you combine it with all the projects like redesigning our visitor center, updating our programming and building our community, each of these milestones means a lot to ensuring we keep reinventing the pier and maintaining its relevance for the next 100 years.” While Al Mare and Albright represent the classics, TCS 2.0 is about merging the classic with the innovative. The new kid on the block foodwise is Mytable, a marketplace and delivery service for home cooked meals. The service partners with the best home cooks in the community to bring home cooked meals direct to your door. Meals on mytable are genuine home cooked meals and the service prides itself on the ability to retain money in the community as the meals are actually made by community members. Users have the option to select pickup and the home cook will meet you curbside with the meal or choose delivery and have it delivered directly to your door. For those who do enjoy home cooking, Whole Foods is also a part of the Pier food family. The chain is arguably, Santa Monica’s favorite grocery store with three stores in city limits and two in nearby communities. The company has plans to open a fourth store in town as part of a new store concept focusing on value. According to Whole Foods, the new stores will be branded as “365 by Whole Foods Market” and are designed to com-

plement the Whole Foods Market brand by bringing fresh, healthy foods to a broader audience with a streamlined, qualitymeets-value shopping experience. They said the new 365 store will be a nice complement to the existing Whole Foods Market stores in Santa Monica. Gabe Dupin, Marketing Team Leader at the Venice store said one of the company’s core values is to serve and support the community, both locally and globally. “TCS is a great local event that draws thousands of people from all over the Westside,” he said. “So it’s a natural fit for us to be present.” The Whole Foods stores in Brentwood, 23rd & Wilshire, 5th & Wilshire and the Venice store at Lincoln & Rose are rotating through the pier selling a variety of healthy food options. Dupin said it’s an opportunity to interact with residents in a different, but meaningful way. He said they are taking the opportunity to help support other local businesses such as

Beanfields, a Los Angeles based chip company. Dupin said the company actively wants to partner with community groups, to be present at community events, to interface with community members and be a community partner. “Each store can choose two non-profits to receive 5% of net store sales,” he said. “We give out a lot of money to local non profits. At the Venice location, we’ve donated $60,000 over last three years, not to mention the ongoing donations we give to local schools.” He said the store regularly donates food to support volunteer events, provides grants through Whole Foods’ charitable foundation and supports healthy eating through the establishment of salad bars on school campuses. “We’ve been at the concerts for three years in a row at least,” he said. We really want to be tied into the local community.”

Decades after ‘Bam Bam,’ Sister Nancy still explosive hat do Chris Brown, Wiz Khalifa, Lauryn Hill, Too Short, Main Source, Cam’ron and Aloe Blacc have in common? Aside from earning fame in rap, hiphop and R&B, at one point or another they all sampled from a song by a 53year-old woman who doesn’t even have her own website. Indeed, the revival of the infectious “Bam Bam” across the pop music landscape begins to reveal the influence and durability of Sister Nancy, a pioneering reggae artist who still looms large in the evolving dancehall genre. “Bam Bam,” an audio recording of which has garnered more than 10 million views on YouTube, features the groovy beats, minimalist melodies and thickly accented lyrics that are characteristic of the Jamaican native’s enduring style. The song was even featured on the soundtrack of last year’s controversial comedy movie “The Interview,” reviving interest in all things Sister Nancy. The somewhat elusive woman’s music career has featured long periods of dormancy, though, making her appearance

W

at the Santa Monica Pier for the Twilight Concert Series an even more special occasion for longtime fans and new listeners alike. Known outside of the music world as Ophlin Russell-Myers, Sister Nancy is one of 15 children in a family that also includes brother and fellow dancehall artist Brigadier Jerry. She rose to prominence as one of the first internationally touring female DJs, parlaying a performance at the Reggae Sunsplash festival in Jamaica into future success. She made a name for herself following the release of her debut album, 1982’s “One, Two,” which features “Bam Bam” and which was produced by Winston Riley. Sister Nancy decided to step away from the reggae scene before long, becoming a full-time accountant and settling in New Jersey. “I’m working now more than when I was 20 years old and in the heat of my career,” she said, according to a 2013 article in the Jamaica Observer. But even during her extended breaks

from music, other artists were taking notice of her work. Hip-Hop outfit Main Source borrowed from “Bam Bam” on “Just Hangin’ Out” in the early 1990s, California-raised rapper Too Short sampled the track on “Blowjob Betty” a few years later and Fugees member Lauryn Hill injected it into “Lost Ones” on her critically acclaimed solo endeavor, “The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill,” in 1998. And Sister Nancy’s anthem remained relevant after the turn of the century. Well before Aloe Blacc gained national attention for “The Man,” he was rapping over the “Bam Bam”-infused “Count Your Blessings” on his 2005 album with producer Exile. Cam’ron found a place for the reggae classic on “Bum Bum” in 2007. Chris Brown and Wiz Khalifa got in on the act with “Bomb” in 2011. It’s all part of a slow-burning renaissance for Sister Nancy, whose most popular tune was released more than 30 years ago. Sister Nancy takes her show on the road sporadically, delighting fans with her vocal skill and on-stage charisma.

Earlier this summer she performed at the Reggae in the Desert festival in Las Vegas, highlighting a lineup that also included JBoog and Maxi Priest, among others. “I will take the shows as far as Israel on weekends,” she said, “but I must be back at my desk on Monday morning.” Sister Nancy’s anticipated Twilight Concert Series gig in Santa Monica will give fans who grew up with “Bam Bam” a reason to dance, and it will give younger attendees a chance to witness a reggae legend who is as relevant today as ever. Opening for Sister Nancy is up-andcoming reggae artist Jesse Royal, who is touring in support of his recently released single, “Feel Your Pain.” Born Jesse David Leroi Grey in 1989, Jesse Royal developed a strong friendship in school with Daniel “Bambaata” Marley, the grandson of Bob Marley, and began pursuing music as a career. Indeed, Jesse Royal is simultaneously building on the tradition of the reggae stalwarts who came before him while charting his own path in a genre that unites music fans from around the world.

SISTER NANCY with JESSE ROYAL Ophlin Russell-Myers is a dancehall DJ and singer from Kingston, Jamaica that performs as Sister Nancy. Described as a dominating female voice in the industry, she has a reputation as one of the first female dancehall DJ's in the world. As one of 15 siblings she shares her musical talent with older brother Robert who has carved out a successful career of his own performing as Brigadier Jerry. She developed her skills as a teen working with her brother and was discovered by producer Winston Riley in 1980, resulting in her first single, "Papa Dean" for his Techniques label.

Across its 17 tracks and 69 minutes, pom pom, the most recent record by Ariel Pink, is unfiltered Ariel, a pied piper of the absurd, with infectious tales of romance, murder, frog princes and Jell-O. The record sees the Los Angeles native strike it out alone, returning to the solo moniker he has adopted for well over a decade when cementing his name as a king of pop perversion. From demented kiddie tune collaborations with the legendary Kim Fowley (songs like 'Jell-O' and 'Plastic Raincoats In The Pig Parade' were written with Fowley in his hospital room during his recent battle with cancer), to beatific, windswept pop ('Put Your Number In My Phone', 'Dayzed Inn Daydreams'), scuzz-punk face-melters ('Goth Bomb', 'Negativ Ed'), and carnival dub psychedelia ('Dinosaur Carebears'), pom pom could very well be Ariel Pink's magnum opus.

JEFFERSON STARSHIP with PURPLE MOUNTAINS MAJESTIES RUSTY'S EAC WINNER

Paul Kantner founded Jefferson Airplane in 1965. The Airplane were the biggest rock group in America during the 1960s and the first San Francisco band to sign a major record deal, paving the way for other legends like Grateful Dead & Janis Joplin. They headlined the original Woodstock Festival in 1969 and like The Beatles with whom they are critically compared, lasted a mere seven years ... though their influence and impact on rock music continues well into the 21st century. In 1974 Mr. Kantner created Jefferson Starship and again enjoyed chart-topping success. Paul, & Jefferson Airplane were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, the same year as Pink Floyd. Jefferson Starship, the name created by Paul for his 1971 solo debut “Blows Against The Empire” recording, has endured 40 years as one of rock's most legendary bands. That recording was the first and only to ever be nominated for literary science fiction's Hugo Award. Co-founder David Freiberg also started the legendary Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Fillmore era San Francisco band who often shared the bill with The Dead & The Airplane). David is a world famous singer, producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He was also a member of Jefferson Airplane, and co-wrote one of Jefferson Starship's all-time biggest hits, “Jane” - which he performs. From 1973 to 1978 Donny Baldwin was with the "Elvin Bishop" Band. During this time he toured and recorded six albums, which included the #1 hit single, "Fooled Around and Fell In Love". From 1981 to 1989, Donny was a member of Jefferson Starship. In January 1994, he

joined the Jerry Garcia Band. Chris Smith joined Jefferson Starship in 1998, having toured with The Supremes and Lou Bega. Chris has gone on to place music in film and television including the #1 rated series “CSI.” In 2000 he assumed the seeming impossible task of playing piano and (synth) bass simultaneously … a feat only duplicated by the legendary Ray Manzarek of The Doors. Cathy Richardson joined Jefferson Starship in 2008, and anchors the historic 'role' made famous by Grace Slick. She is an award winning music artist, graphic artist, and clothing designer. Her professional credits include fronting her own successful rock band, producing and releasing seven albums on various indie record labels. She was nominated for a Grammy Award for Art Direction of her band's 2003 release, “The Road to Bliss,” which also received two DIY Awards (Do It Yourself in Film, Books and Music) for Album Art of the Year and Producer of the Year. Jude Gold is an acclaimed lead guitarist - joining in 2012 for a 10 country, three-month international tour - replacing longtime lead player Slick Aguilar who recently underwent a liver transplant. Jude also tours with contemporary stars Miguel Migs, Stu Hamm and JGB (Jerry Garcia's Band) before that. He is also a “professor” at the acclaimed Musician's Institute in Los Angeles.

Formed in 1983 by the Frazier brothers, the band has evolved from playing the streets of the French Quarter to playing festivals and stages all over the world. While committed to upholding the tradition of brass bands, they also extended into the realms of funk and hip hop to create their signature soul moving sound. Their signature brand of heavy funk has not only won over several generations of music lovers, it has become the soundtrack to an entire city. The company has partnered with 1% For The Planet, to donate 1% of annual revenue to world water relief, reforestation, and environmental protection projects. Those who want something more indulgent than water can partake from the Bunaberg booth. Those that need a little pre-dance pick-me-up can get a shot of java from Vittoria coffee. Vittoria is one of Australia’s great business success stories - built on quality, hard work and the strongest business relationships. In 1947,

two Italian brothers, Orazio and Carmelo Cantarella, spotted an opportunity to introduce a taste of their Italian heritage to their new home, Australia. In 1958, the young entrepreneurs began roasting their own premium Arabica beans, supplying small batches of the finest quality coffee to Sydney’s first Italian cafés. Today, Vittoria is Australia’s No.1 pure coffee brand, ingrained in the proud coffee culture that exists in Australia today. For those with an adult-beverage kind of thirst, TCS offers a selection of Barefoot wines a and the Michelob Ultra Concert Garden. Barefoot Cellars founders Michael Houlihan and Bonnie Harvey wanted to make a wine that didn’t take itself too seriously. For three decades, the company has stayed true to its mission to make the world a better place through wine. Aside from their actual wine, Barefoot partners with non-profits and charity group. In fact, they’ve worked with 3,000 charities world wide and have a dedicated wine blend that supports charitable work. In recent year’s the company has expanded its product mix to include four light-bodied and lively new wine varieties that are full of flavor and more refreshing than most traditional wines. The Concert Garden, sponsored by Michelob Ultra, kicks off each concert with a happy hour from 6 – 7 p.m. Adults can set-

tle in at a prime spot and enjoy drink specials before the music, and crowds, begin. Michelob Ultra is part of the Michelob family of beers and adheres to the highest quality standards. From the purest water sources, to the best barley, Michelob beers rely on premium ingredients to craft their beers. The company utilizes two-row barley malt, as opposed to the six-row variety, because it produces beer with a more noticeable smoothness and sweetness. Their brew process is held to exacting standards, standards enforce by rigorous testing. Crafting a better beer means cleaning, monitoring, testing and retesting— every day. But there’s one crucial test at every part of the brewing process: taste. From the water, to a “tea” of the day’s malt, to every step in the brewing process, their noses and tastebuds have the final say.

TUNE-YARDS with AVID DANCER Merrill Garbus has performed as tUnEyArDs since 2009, and that band name has always been synonymous with forward movement — whether because of her explosive performance style or the alwayssurprising way in which her songs unfold. First gaining notice with the debut BiRdBrAiNs, Garbus forged a reputation as a formidable live presence through relentless touring. In 2011, tUnE-yArDs released its second album, w h o k i l l, a startling and sonically adventurous statement that led to a whirlwind period where Garbus and bassist Nate Brenner accrued accolades from critics, performed in front of increasing numbers of rapturous crowds around the world, and collaborated with the likes of Yoko Ono and ?uestlove.

TUNE-YARDS

Callbacks to the past are all over Nikki Nack, the bands third album. Garbus’s vocal performance on ‘Wait For A Minute’ recalls Quiet Storm balladry, and the song also contains a direct callback to her own past: A wobbly keyboard line provided by a Casio she received as a gift when she was

nine years old. ‘Left Behind’ is underscored by a jittery nostalgia, the playground chant from which the album’s title is taken eventually giving way to a chorus where Garbus’s voice is masked by glossy-yet tarnished production that brings to mind the radio reigns of Lisa Lisa and En Vogue.

Nikki Nack has uncertainty about both the past and the future, but that’s in keeping with Garbus’s overall aesthetic of constantly questioning and burrowing for a “new way,” tempered by the joy that goes hand in hand with new discoveries.
