Dance pop tailored for oceanside sunsets

RÜFÜS DU SOL

R

ufus du Sol makes what band members like to call atmospheric indie electronic dance-pop, but they don’t do it in the way some expect. It’s not a guy standing on a stage with a computer, headphones and audio equipment, blaring pre-recorded samples from the speakers as fans bounce along to the beats. Rather, it’s a trio of talented musicians pulling together a variety of instruments to create sounds in the moment — and for the moment. “RÜFÜS is three people making live music, not a Danish DJ,” vocalist/guitarist Tyrone Lindqvist says in an email interview, and you get the sense they’re happy to challenge people’s preconceptions about electronic music as they travel the world on tour. It’s a journey that includes a stop at Santa Monica Pier for the Twilight Concert Series, a perfect destination for a group that describes the mood of its music as

perfect for a sunset by the ocean. It’s why Rufus du Sol didn’t hesitate to accept when it was invited to take part in the annual outdoor series on the local beaches. The band knows Santa Monica for its “good people, good wine and roller coasters,” and it’s hoping to add good music to the mix. “These are the type of gigs you never forget with the backdrop of the lights of the pier and the Pacific Ocean,” Lindqvist says. “It’s a pretty easy sell.” Based in Australia, Rufus du Sol — known simply as RÜFÜS everywhere but the U.S., where complications surrounding the name forced a tweak in branding in the American market — is looking forward to sharing its upbeat vibes and pulsing rhythms with fans and new listeners in Southern California. It’s almost fitting that the band was formed in 2010 during a vacation to Byron Bay, a coastal town in southeastern

Australia, where rain forced Lindqvist, keyboardist Jon George and drummer James Hunt to spend time indoors. The band members proceeded to create their own musical sunshine during an impromptu jam session, setting the stage for their foray into electronic music. They released two EPs over the next two years, first “RÜFÜS” in 2011 and then “Blue” in 2012. What followed was the band’s debut full-length album, “Atlas,” which soared to the top of Australian charts. But the band, like the genre it occupies, continues evolving. “It’s as strong as it’s ever been,” Lindqvist says. “There are these little communities of people doing similar things all around the world. People who’ve never met are collaborating and innovating in a way that’s never been possible before. For us, we listen to electronic music because it makes you feel good. As long as it does that, we’ll keep

being inspired to write songs.” Rufus du Soul arrives in Santa Monica on the heels of its sophomore release, “Bloom,” a collection of tracks that showcases the band’s knack for buildup. There’s the slow-burning groove of “Innerbloom,” the head-bobbing bounce of “You Were Right” and the uber-catchy “Like an Animal,” among other standout tunes. The members of Rufus du Sol, who recently performed at the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival at Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, acknowledge that some Twilight Concert Series attendees will be hearing their music for the first time. But they’re confident that the crowds will be moved — and moving to the beat — by night’s end. “If it’s not a crowd that is familiar with our music,” Lindqvist says, “we just work off each other and treat it as a bit of a jam and have a good time on stage.”

WATCHING THE SHOW from the beach tonight? Don't forget to recycle your glass bottles and aluminum cans.

anta Monica is a city founded on egalitarian principles. From Inkwell Beach to establishing rent control to newly constructed accessible playgrounds, the area has a history of a commitment to the most American of principles, equity and access for all. Despite growing fears of becoming a “Beverly Hills by the Sea,” the Twilight Concert Series is a clear connection to those democratic roots that provides free entertainment for anyone who wants to attend. To truly be inclusive the Pier and its events acknowledge and embrace the sometimes colorful history of the beach. “I know a lot of Santa Monicans believe there’s a more down to earth ethos here,” Jay Farrand, Executive Director of the Santa Monica Pier says. “They remember older days… the Dogtown, surf culture, the birth of beach volleyball, when it was a little bit more ragged in places.” Santa Monica’s unique history indeed colors the present. The beach it sits on influences nearly every aspect of its culture, making it synonymous with surf, music, and the environment. “It’s not always been so shiny and prim and proper,” Farrand said. “The Pier remains sort of a unique venue for quirky characters. We want to preserve that aspect of the community.” As a piece of public infrastructure, the Pier itself is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Its always-open ethos does more than just provide for insomniac walks, jet lagged tourists and die hard Pokémon collectors. Fishermen, many of them catching for subsistence, gather on the decks at all hours and it’s in that spirit that the concerts maintain a free open-to-all model. It’s a model that does require financial support from community leaders and generous sponsors but Farrand said the work is part of the job description for pier staff. “Anything that becomes more successful takes more effort to preserve its soul.” The Pier director relates the balance between growth and morals to his previous

marketing work at the now- ubiquitous TOM shoes. “Whether it’s a company, a community or any other sort of organization, the real challenge is staying focused on the mission and the heart and soul because that’s the energy that drives the movement forward,” he said. The efforts are paying off with growing crowds and positive feedback. The free, quality entertainment draws in more people and starts new traditions for them and their friends. As Farrand puts it, people vote with their feet and a lot of them are walking to the Pier on Thursday nights. This spirit of bringing in all walks of life can be seen within other Santa Monica institutions. The new Expo Line that expanded in May now connects downtown Los Angles directly to Santa Monica. Santa Monica College’s own KCRW provides National Public Radio programming to anyone with an internet connection. Growth and equality do not have to be mutually exclusive. “The people that come to the concerts and the people that put them on want to know that they’re doing this for a larger purpose, for a community that celebrates diversity and egalitarian access,” Farrand said. It’s the same reason the Santa Monica Pier makes it a point to host an eclectic list of events, including their annual ROGA (as in running and yoga) and free Front Porch Cinema showings. It’s about not only bringing people together but connecting them in fun ways. Farrand and the rest of the team at the Santa Monica pier are there for a reason. Many hailing from nonprofit backgrounds, the iconic pier brought them here the way they seek to bring others to Santa Monica. “This place is kind of magical,” Farrand says. “I think anybody would be lucky to look out of their office window and see a spinning Ferris Wheel and crashing waves every morning…. Our reward is just getting to show up and work where we work.”

WEEK 6

AUG 11TH - DANCE

RÜFÜS DU SOL with MARC BAKER A lot can change in two years, and for a band selling out shows in places they'd never visited two years ago, a lot certainly has changed. What hasn't changed for RÜFÜS is a unique approach to their song writing that has seen them gather an ever increasing swathe of fans all over the world from Sydney to Berlin. Two years after their platinum selling debut album, RÜFÜS return with their follow up record, Bloom, and as the title would suggest, the band have blossomed into the tour-de-force that Atlas hinted at. Bloom picks up right where Atlas left off, it's dreamy vocals, moody synths and driving kicks. This time delivered with the confidence of a band who understands their place in the world; as musicians and as people. There is a maturity in Jon, James and Tyrone's production work that comes from spending two years on the road testing new songs. They've figured out what works and more importantly, why. Bloom is the product of isolation and saturation. The songwriters either being alone and away from friends and family, or at home soaked in familiarity. The only constant in the writing process was the three songwriters spending each day writing with the goal of creating a feeling. They start each project

with an idea of a feeling, a setting, a location or a scene in their minds, and try to soundtrack that moment. Hunt says, “We were writing feelings more than songs. We were ready to cut a lot of the parts or elements to make sure there was this sense of exercising restraint, you don't want everything to sound big. If something goes down to almost nothing it makes the high points sound 20 times higher. And if you over-think something it can kill the spark sometimes." While making the album the trio found themselves dipping other mediums, filling their screen savers with underwater photography of animals. "That inspired the production, in some abstract way," Hunt says. "You get that feeling of floating underwater, the way water is darker the deeper you get." A bit of aqua-Googling later, they fell

down an online sinkhole that told them a group of jellyfish is called a 'bloom' - and the trio found their album title. "The double meaning for Bloom felt perfect, things that can grow and flourish and open up over time," Hunt says. As the release of Bloom approaches it feels as if RÜFÜS have already broken the shackles of 2nd album syndrome. Early single You Were Right, is already certified Gold in their home country and has just won the ARIA award (Australian Grammy) for Best Dance Release. While the 3rd offering Innerbloom, at 9 minutes 38 seconds, is an

ode to everything the band loves about dance music and everything Bloom means to them, Lindqvist explains; "For us personally, we were each drawn to electronic music because of the euphoric nature of it. At its core, it brings people together to dance. I'm sure I'm not the first person to say this, but our favourite artists are our favourite because we've shared moments listening to them with friends or family that you can't recreate. Moments that stay with you. We really wanted to creSEE BIOS PAGE 7

AUG 18TH - CLASSIC

MAVIS STAPLES with THE SUFFERS Mavis Staples is living, breathing history. She is an alchemist of American music, having continuously crossed genre lines like no musician since Ray Charles. Weaving herself into the very fabric of gospel, soul, folk, pop, R B, blues, rock, and hip hop over the last 60 years, this iconic singer has seen and sung through so many changes, always rising up to meet every road. Now in her seventh decade, with the release of her new album Livin' on a High Note (ANTIH), she is only gaining momentum. Produced by M. Ward with songs by

Neko Case, Justin Vernon, Nick Cave, Ben Harper, Tune-Yards, Aloe Blacc and others, the album serves as a summation and furtherance of her illustrious career. Refusing to fade away, she continues to tour incessantly, remaining as vital, engaged, and true as always. There is no persona; she is, simply and untouchably, Mavis - and Livin' on a High Note is the symphony of her life. “I think about this album as a new beginning in my career,” says Mavis. “I'm living on a high note, I'm floating on air. I know I don't have as much time on this Earth as I've already had, but I see it as saying, 'Mavis has been here, y'all.' Before I move on, I just want to leave some Mavis with you that you're not used to hearing. I want to leave you with some joy and love, and some don't-forget-me songs.” And with those words, her high note is revealed not as a pinnacle of ease and wealth but as a righteous life. Mavis is here, having weaved in and through all that fabric for all these many years, to show us that true joy lies simply in living for others. It's the sermon Dr. King gave all those years ago, and we must be grateful that she is able to echo it for us now. Mavis takes usnot only there, but back, up, and through. Since her first recording at age 13 in 1954, Mavis Staples has learned from, worked with, and schooled countless legends, and has brought her own timeless talent to every performance. From the Delta-inflected gospel sound she helped create in the 1950s with her father, Pops, and her brother and sisters as The Staple Singers, to the SEE BIOS PAGE 10

SAVE FERRIS with CIBO MATTO & JAKE DAVIS BAND (Rusty's Emerging Artist Competition Winner)

SAVE FERRIS is a ska-punk band formed circa 1995 in Orange County, Southern California. Their name is a reference to the

UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA

1986 film Ferris Bueller's Day Off. The band formed after the dissolution of a number of Southern California bands. With Monique Powell as manager, front person, and co-songwriter, the band began to book shows around Southern California to a great underground response. Financed by Powell's sister, the band released their debut EP "Introducing SAVE FERRIS" on Powell's label, Starpool Records, in 1996. They ended up selling close to 20,000 copies of their EP out of the trunks of their cars, with huge support from Orange County independent record shops and fans. That year, Powell provided vocals on the Reel Big Fishsong "She Has A Girlfriend Now" on their album "Turn the Radio Off" (Mojo). With Powell as manager and lead, and as favorites of KROQ radio's legendary Rodney on the Rock, SAVE FERRIS created a presence on LA's KROQ radio, possibly being the first unsigned band to do this in LA alternative radio history. Later that year, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences gave the band a Grammy showcase award for best unsigned band, earning them a recording contract with Epic Records (SONY). The band released their debut full-length album for Epic in 1997. "It Means Everything" featured several re-recorded tracks from the EP, several new songs, and, on Powell's urging, a cover of Dexy's Midnight Runners' "Come on Eileen," which the band released as their first official single, and what was to become their most successful single. The band also released "The World is New" as a single which was featured in the film "The Big Hit" starring Mark Wahlburg. Olympic medal winner Tara Lipinski used "The World is New" in her debut program as a professional skater in the nationally telecast 1998 Skate TV Championships. The band toured extensively in support of "It Means Everything", opening for bands such as Sugar Ray, The Offspring, and Reel Big Fish. In April 1998, they made their television debut on HBO's music series "REVERB" and made an on-screen appearance in the cult classic teen film, "10 Things

I Hate About You". The album sold over 400,000 copies, and spawned three Top Ten hits in both Japan and Mexico. With two singles in the Billboard top 100 and full rotation on alternative radio all over the world, SAVE FERRIS has managed to go Platinum internationally. Winter 1998 saw the departure of their drummer. After a thunderously successful main stage tour with the Vans Warped Tour, the band began writing their follow-up to "It Means Everything". The appropriately-titled "Modified" was released in October 1999. The album saw the band moving away from their ska-punk roots and into pop-punk territory. The band toured nationally with the band "Lit", of hit single "My Own Worst Enemy" fame. SAVE FERRIS continued to tour in support of "Modified" throughout 2000 and 2001. In August and September 2001 the band did a short tour of the UK. In the winter of 2002, SAVE FERRIS had the rare opportunity to play front and center at the nationally broadcast Winter Olympics Snowboarding Championships in Salt Lake City, Utah. Still fronted by their original lead singer, SAVE FERRIS has been through a number of changes in their musical lineup through the years. Powell self-financed what she called the "For the Fans" SAVE FERRIS US tour in 2003. On March 29, 2003 at Ska Summit 2003 in Las Vegas, SAVE FERRIS played on the main stage to a thunderously positive response. Other appearances of note Ms. Powell has made: "Mayor of the Sunset Strip" film, "Roswell" network television show, "The Conan O'Brien Show", "Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher", MTV's Loveline with Dr. Drew, the "Keenan Ivory Wayans" show, and the "Late Show with Craig Kilbourne".

UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA with STEADY HOLIDAY The threads of our past never unravel, they hover like invisible webs, occasionally glistening due to a sly angle of the sun. On Multi-Love, Unknown Mortal Orchestra frontman and multi-instrumentalist Ruban Nielson reflects on relationships: airy, humid longing, loss, the geometry of desire that occurs when three people align. Where Nielson addressed the pain of being alone on II, Multi-Love takes on the complications of being together. Multi-Love adds dimensions to the band's already kaleidoscopic approach, with Nielson exploring a newfound appreciation for synthesizers. Cosmic escapes and disco rhythms speak to developing new vocabulary, while Nielson's vocals reach powerful new heights. “It felt good to be rebelling against the typical view of what an artists is today, a curator,” he says. “It's more about being someone who makes things happen in concrete ways. Building old synthesizers and bringing them back to life, creating sounds that aren't quite like anyone else's. I think that's much more subversive.” While legions of artists show fidelity to the roots of psychedelia, Unknown Mortal Orchestra shares the rare quality that makes the genre's touchstones so vital, constant exploration.

Currently the band consists of 10 members 4 of which are original members. James “Diamond” Williams (Drums), Billy Beck (Keyboard), Clarence Willis (Lead Guitar), and Robert Kuumba,(Percussion). One might think the band members could now sit back and count their gold and platinum records, enjoy the memories and fade into an easy retirement. Nothing could be further from the truth. These guys have managed to keep busy and have been entertaining crowds of people all over the world who sing their songs and dance to the melodies and funky grooves. The Ohio Players today are one of the few bands from the 70's era who still currently performs all of their music using no computers or samplers to enhance their musical production. The Ohio Players are thankful for still having a large loyal fan base who come to the shows and are still enthusiastic to hear the original sounds from the 70's. The Ohio Players are enthusiastic and eager with the dawn of their new release. “This is your Night” The group's first new release in 13 years.
