orty-five seconds into her latest album, “Livin’ on a High Note,” with a wave of guitar and bass rollicking beneath her, rhythm and blues icon Mavis Staples clues in listeners about how the 12-song compilation came together. “I’ve got friends and I’ve got family,” she sings on “Take Us Back,” an opening track composed by Benjamin Booker that sets the tone for the entire release. “I’ve got help from all the people who love me.” Staples, a 77-year-old gospel singer who has poured her soul into music for decades, has made a name for herself as a solo artist in recent years, winning a Grammy Award in 2011 for Best Americana Album with “You Are Not Alone.” For her latest work, however, she enlisted the help of talented colleagues from several different genres to compose songs specifically for her. The result is an album that highlights Staples’ skill and versatility as

a vocalist. “These songwriters gave me a challenge,” she says. “They gave me that feeling of, ‘Hey, I can hang! I can still do this!’ There’s a variety, and it makes me feel refreshed and brand new.” Staples, who began her career in music with her family group, played an active role in the civil rights movement of the 1960s by lending her voice and spirit to the cause. But “Livin’ on a High Note” is new territory for Staples — not just in a musical sense, but also topically. Whereas her past work alludes to slavery and other racial injustices, the new album aims to leave listeners with a positive outlook. “I’ve been singing my freedom songs and I wanted to stretch out and sing some songs that were new,” she says. “I told the writers I was looking for some joyful songs. I want to leave something to lift people up; I’m so busy making people cry, not from sadness,

but I’m always telling a part of history that brought us down and I’m trying to bring us back up.” Staples, who has collaborated and toured with Bob Dylan, has the talent and gravitas to make it happen. On “Love and Trust,” she adapts to the bluesy reggae style of Ben Harper. On “Tomorrow,” which includes credits to Aloe Blacc and John Batiste, horns enliven a funk-filled groove. “Happiness is the key to success,” she croons on the track. Booker, Harper, Blacc and Batiste are among the many contributing writers on “Livin’ on a High Note,” which was released earlier this year. Indie folk band The Head & The Heart assists on “If It’s a Light,” alternative indie pop outfit Tune-Yards comes through on “Action” and Tennessee singersongwriter Valerie June brings her bluegrass roots to “High Note.” Justin Vernon, Neko Case, Son Little and Nick Cave also provide

compositions for Staples. Perhaps the most fruitful collaboration features Staples and M. Ward, an accomplished blues and folk artist who is credited on three songs. And while the album tackles fresh lyrical ground, it doesn’t attempt to erase Staples’ background as an African-American woman who grew up as Martin Luther King Jr. and others struggled for equality. “What do we do with this history now?” she asks on “History Now,” which was crafted by Case. “Will you help me dismantle the sorrow and dig up the scars off the ground?” Staples, it seems, has already answered her own questions. She, like her latest album, is focused on the future. “I’m living on a high note, I’m above the clouds,” she says. “I’m just so grateful. I must be the happiest old girl in the world. Yes, indeed.”

in the Montana Custer- Gallatin National Forest with every picture. Partnerships can stem from a shared history or shared values but for companies like music streaming service TuneIn it was both. Head of Integrated Partnerships Kim Cruz says he’s been a fan of TCS for years. “The series' music curation is top notch and I love how it brings all sorts of people, from Southern California and the world, together,” Cruz says. “In a way, TuneIn does the same for our listeners. We can bring you to the moment - whether that be Music, Sports, News, or Talk - no matter where you are in the world.” The Santa Monica based company is streaming TCS live as well as customized playlists of past and present acts. TCS partners challenge the conventional mode of sponsorship. Farrand explains that the pier seeks out more engaging partnerships for a reason. Take Snapchat- the widely popular social media platform hosts ghost-themed carnival games at the event (a nod to their paranormal logo) for people to play between sets. “They get it,” Farrand says. “Progressive brands understand this approach is better for them in the end versus just slapping a logo on everything.” Farrand says that the partner’s involvement with free public events also provides a stronger sense of community. “We love partners who understand the goal is to make the party even more fun.” This year’s partners sure have contributed to making Thursday nights on the Pier more fun this summer. If you haven’t already, we invite you to explore the TCS venue, fun games and good times abound thanks to our Partners!

ver the years, the Twilight Concert Series has become a mainstay of the Santa Monica community. The annual summer music festival is brought to you by the tireless efforts of the Santa Monica Pier team, but there’s another crucial player behind the event: partners. “Partners make this possible and allow our programming to be free and accessible to everyone so we're very lucky to have them,” Executive Director of the Santa Monica Pier Jay Farrand says. Partners are playing a bigger part than ever this year at TCS thanks to years of developed business ventures. “Our goal is to cultivate long term partnerships vs. one off sponsorships,” Pier Director of Partnerships and Development Craig Hoffman says. “Once the business development is out of the way and the relationship grows, that's when the exciting collaboration and innovation really kicks in… If the partnership is not a big win for all, it's not sustainable.” The Twilight Concert’s exclusive beer partner Boulevard Brewing Company is a good example of this year’s partnerships. The Kansas City- based brewery has expanded to Santa Monica in recent years through events like Boulevard on the Pier, so when Hoffman reached out about participating in TCS, they didn’t hesitate. “We said ‘Absolutely, we want to be involved.’ It’s a real special series,” Los Angeles Marketing Manger Ian Hendrickson says. Boulevard offers four beers at the TCS concert garden including fan favorite Tank 7 and their new Ginger Lemon Rattler. Dedication to mutually beneficial partnerships has drawn both local Santa Monica companies and bigger national names to TCS. For drink company Boxed Water, the pier and Santa Monica’s commitment to environmental consciousness was a huge draw. “We’re a brand that’s committed to sustainability… That’s incredibly important to our brand ethos,” Vice President of Marketing Matt DeWitte says. Take the company’s current Retree campaign- a multiyear initiative aimed at planting 1 million trees across United States National Forests by 2020. Along with providing their renewably packaged water, Boxed Water is also bringing Retree to TCS with a photo booth that allows attendees to plant 2 more trees

THE SUFFERS

WEEK 7

AUG 18TH - CLASSIC

MAVIS STAPLES with THE SUFFERS Mavis Staples is living, breathing history. She is an alchemist of American music, having continuously crossed genre lines like no musician since Ray Charles. Weaving herself into the very fabric of gospel, soul, folk, pop, R B, blues, rock, and hip hop over the last 60 years, this iconic singer has seen and sung through so many changes, always rising up to meet every road. Now in her seventh decade, with the release of her new album Livin' on a High Note (ANTIH), she is only gaining momentum. Produced by M. Ward with songs by Neko Case, Justin Vernon, Nick Cave, Ben Harper, Tune-Yards, Aloe Blacc and others, the album serves as a summation and furtherance of her illustrious career. Refusing to fade away, she continues to tour incessantly, remaining as vital, engaged, and true as always. There is no persona; she is, simply and untouchably, Mavis - and Livin' on a High Note is the symphony of her life. “I think about this album as a new beginning in my career,” says Mavis. “I'm living on a high note, I'm floating on air. I know I don't have as much time on this Earth as I've already had, but I see it as saying, 'Mavis has been here, y'all.' Before I move on, I just want to leave some Mavis with you that you're not used to hearing. I want to leave

you with some joy and love, and some don't-forget-me songs.” And with those words, her high note is revealed not as a pinnacle of ease and wealth but as a righteous life. Mavis is here, having weaved in and through all that fabric for all these many years, to show us that true joy lies simply in living for others. It's the sermon Dr. King gave all those years ago, and we must be grateful that she is able to echo it for us now. Mavis takes usnot only there, but back, up, and through. Since her first recording at age 13 in 1954, Mavis Staples has learned from, worked with, and schooled countless legends, and has brought her own timeless talent to every performance. From the Delta-inflected gospel sound she helped create in the 1950s with her father, Pops, and her brother and sisters as The Staple Singers, to the freedom songs of the Civil Rights era, to pop radio stardom during the Stax

era with hits “I'll Take You There” and “Respect Yourself,” to The Last Waltz, to serving as muse to both Bob Dylan and Prince at the peak of their careers, to 21st century collaborations with Van Morrison, Billy Preston, Zac Brown, Ry Cooder, Chuck D. and Willie Nelson, to her Grammy winning partnership with fellow Chicagoan Jeff Tweedy, the one constant has been Mavis and her singular voice. She has embraced her evolution, absorbing new sounds and ideas, rising to meet the challenges of longevity and bringing her message of hope and positivity to new listeners, song after song, show after show.

SAVE FERRIS with CIBO MATTO & JAKE DAVIS BAND (Rusty's Emerging Artist Competition Winner)

With Monique Powell as manager, front person, and co-songwriter, the band began to book shows around Southern California to a great underground response. Financed by Powell's sister, the band released their debut EP "Introducing SAVE FERRIS" on Powell's label, Starpool Records, in 1996. They ended up selling close to 20,000 copies of their EP out of the trunks of their cars, with huge support from Orange County independent record shops and fans. That year, Powell provided vocals on the Reel Big Fishsong "She Has A Girlfriend Now" on their album "Turn the Radio Off" (Mojo).

With Powell as manager and lead, and as favorites of KROQ radio's legendary Rodney on the Rock, SAVE FERRIS created a presence on LA's KROQ radio, possibly being the first unsigned band to do this in LA alternative radio history. Later that year, the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences gave the band a Grammy showcase award for best unsigned band, earning them a recording contract with Epic Records (SONY). The band released their debut full-length album for Epic in 1997. "It Means Everything" featured several re-recorded tracks from the EP, several new songs, and, on Powell's urging, a cover of Dexy's Midnight Runners' "Come on Eileen," which the band released as their first SEE BIOS PAGE 10

WEEK 9

SEPT 1ST - INDIE ROCK

UNKNOWN MORTAL ORCHESTRA with STEADY HOLIDAY The threads of our past never unravel, they hover like invisible webs, occasionally glistening due to a sly angle of the sun. On Multi-Love, Unknown Mortal Orchestra frontman and multi-instrumentalist Ruban Nielson reflects on relationships: airy, humid longing, loss, the geometry of desire that occurs when three people align. Where Nielson addressed the pain of being alone on II, Multi-Love takes on the complications of being together. Multi-Love adds dimensions to the band's already kaleidoscopic approach, with Nielson exploring a newfound appreciation for synthesizers. The new songs channel with the spirit of psych innovators without ignoring the last 40 years of music, forming a flowing, cohesive whole that reflects restless creativity. Cosmic escapes and disco rhythms speak to developing new vocabulary, while Nielson's vocals reach powerful new heights. “It felt good to be rebelling against the typical view of what an artists is today, a curator,” he says. “It's more about being someone who makes things happen in concrete ways. Building old synthesizers and bringing them back to life, creating sounds that aren't quite like anyone else's. I think that's much more subversive.” While legions of artists show fidelity to

the roots of psychedelia, Unknown Mortal Orchestra shares the rare quality that makes the genre's touchstones so vital, constant exploration.

WEEK 10

SEPT 8TH - DISCO

OHIO PLAYERS with HOLY GHOST! The Ohio Players came into musical prominence in the 1970's as pioneers of street funk and underground R&B. After signing with Mercury Records in 1974 through 1977 The Ohio Players landed three consecutive platinum albums “Skin Tight, “Fire”, and “Honey”. Two number one singles on the billboard pop charts “Fire” and “Love Rollercoaster” and five number one R&B singles “Funky Worm”,”Fire”,”Sweet Sticky Thing”, “Love Rollercoaster,” and “Who'd She Coo”. The Ohio Players traveled the world and produced more than a dozen albums and received 14 gold and platinum awards for their labors. They also appeared on many national television programs from Dick Clark, Don Kushner, to David Letterman. Since then there is a long list of Artists who have sampled or re-recorded their material to list a few: Snoop Dogg, Puff Daddy, Salt & Peppa, Too Short, Sound garden, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Paul Jackson Jr., and Alex Bugnon. Currently the band consists of 10 members 4 of which are original members. James “Diamond” Williams (Drums), Billy Beck (Keyboard), Clarence Willis (Lead Guitar), and Robert Kuumba,(Percussion). One might think the band members could now sit back and count their gold and platinum records, enjoy the memories and fade into an easy retirement. Nothing could be further from the truth. These guys have managed to keep busy and have been entertaining crowds of people all over the world who sing their songs and dance to the melodies and funky grooves. The Ohio Players today are one of the few bands from the 70's era who still currently performs all of their music using no computers or samplers to enhance their musical production. The Ohio Players are thankful for still having a large loyal fan base who come to the shows and are still enthusiastic to hear the original sounds from the 70's. The Ohio Players are enthusiastic and eager with the dawn of their new release. “This is your Night” The group's first new release in 13 years. After 38yrs in the business this group is still setting stages on “Fire” and riding their own “Love Rollercoaster”.
