TCS to showcase emerging artists he Twilight Concert Series has become one of the preeminent music shows in Southern California, but for but great live music isn’t anything new over at Rusty’s Surf Shack. The pier institution has provided one of Santa Monica’s favorite music venues for decades while catering to a crowd of loyal locals and satisfied visitors. “We have great food and beverages for the regular customer and we specialize in a casual welcoming atmosphere,” said owner Russell Barnard. “We’re also the only place with live entertainment.” He said hosting live music every week extends the normal daily life on the pier into the evening. “It’s not unusual that we’ll be the only restaurant still open and active,” he said. “We’re keeping the pier a vital place into the evening and there aren’t many other opportunities to sit, listen to music or dance.” In addition to their regular programming, Rusty’s also hosts the Emerging Artist Competition, an annual battle of the bands that this year, culminates in the winning act opening the TCS show. Barnard said the event has been going strong for 14 years and began as a way to find new acts to put into the regular rotation. He said the initial process uncovered so much talent, and drew so much interest, they decided to hold it every year. “It’s grown in size,” he said. “When we originally started we had 12 acts, this year it was 20 bands over three rounds of competition. The winner had to beat out 19 other bands to get into the top spot and this is the fifth year the winner will be an opening act at TCS.” For winning band Denmentau, the chance to open a show like TCS is something they are very grateful for. “This is a big opportunity for us for sure,” said Drummer Milan Carl. “We would love to play more of these shows and maybe go on tour with a big band. Denmentau is a rock band originally from Germany. Carl said they uprooted themselves and came to California to live their dreams of making it in the
T
music business. He said the group has spent 12 years as working musicians. “It’s a big dream you follow all the time,” he said. “At the point when we came here, you had to make your own dreams and after a while you follow your vision.” Carl said the group made a conscious decision to be working musicians and not take side jobs. They have been touring and playing as street musicians to facilitate their focus on music. He said they play all over the area, including as street performers on the Pier and Promenade. “Rusty’s was so close, he is actually on the other side of the Pier from where we were, but we saw the venue and saw the band concerts were happening,” He said any musician enters a contest to win, but it’s hard to judge your chances of success in the early rounds.
“At some point in the first or second round, you realize that it’s possible,” he said. “We really work with feelings and with our music, we’re pushing those out and trying to help the audience understand our music. Those feelings are what we want to express with our music.” Barnard said the chance to play before a TCS sized crowd is why bands get into the business. “It’s a great example of the lure that Los Angeles has across the world for the music industry,” he said. “This in an opportunity for a breakthrough. It shows the value of hard work and breaking out to leave the safety and security of home. What an incredible opportunity this is, it can make careers. I know they’re very excited and this is an example of the incredible international community that the pier repre-
sents. Carl said playing in California has been inspirational for the group. Over their time here, they’ve produce more than 20 original songs and he said he is excited for a wider audience to hear their music. “We try to book shows on our own all the time but this Thursday there’s a chance for people to come and hear us that never would have come to a show before. Even if this isn’t really their music, it’s possible for them to hear us. We want people to know that we really live our dream and we have been working really hard.” He said the band isn’t concerned with their egos, just with sharing their work with an audience. “It’s about making the audience happy,” he said. “One of our missions is to spread the music to people.”

Creative movie poster tributes t may be the Twilight Concert Series, but part of the TCS 2.0 experience has been exploring the intersection of music and the visual arts. Concert goers have access to the visual stimulation of the Truecar lighting installation and Fandango has also partnered with TCS to host the “We Love Movies” art gallery every week. “Music and movies are inherently linked— they entertain us and make people feel, question, explore,” said Adam Rockmore, SVP Marketing of Fandango. “We wanted to celebrate entertainment and creativity in all forms, which led to Fandango commissioning several artists from around the world to create movie poster tributes to their favorite films. All 20 original pieces are now featured in the first-ever Fandango We Love Movies pop-up art gallery at the Santa Monica Pier. These posters celebrate films like Charlie And The Chocolate Factory, The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Jurassic Park — TCS is the perfect event to showcase these illustrations that pay homage to some of Hollywood’s most beloved classics.” Fandango is the go-to destination for more than 36 million moviegoers each month. The company helps movie fans discover, buy tickets and share their passion for movies in a more engaging and interactive way.
I
Fandango entertains, informs and guides film fans with ticket sales, mustsee trailers and movie clips, exclusive and original content, insider news and expert commentary. Fandango is available online, and through their awardwinning mobile and connected television apps with over 46 million downloads and counting. Rockmore said the company’s love of movies drives their actions. “At Fandango we love movies and we wanted to be able to share that passion with the local community of movie lovers,” he said. Fandango is another Santa Monica success story and Rockmore said it makes sense to partner with the hometown’s signature event. “Because Fandango was born in Santa Monica 15 years ago a few blocks from the pier and we are to this day a Silicon Beach area company, what better place to celebrate movies than the Westside's most iconic filming location,” he said. Pier Administrator Jay Farrand said TCS 2.0 is about enhancing a classic experience with modern technology, a theme that is reflected in their partnership with Fandango. “We love working with Silicon Beach companies and Fandango is a great example,” he said. “Their installation
connects music lovers to classic films in a new and interesting way. As a pioneer in the online ticket business, they really showcase the way technology can enhance the way we experience art.” Rockmore said the communal experience of watching a movie is similar to the communal experience on the Pier. “Because of this, the energy there is ideal for an art installation that pays homage to some of the industry's greatest films,” he said. The Fandango We Love Movies popup art gallery offers a unique insight into popular films through the lens of each particular artist. Patrons can enjoy each unique perspective while enjoying the sounds of live music. Additionally, there are unique photo opportunities at the booth, each week costumed charac-
ters representing one of the posters takes photos with attendees— one week it could be an Oompa Loompa and the next it could be Jack Sparrow— there’s something for everyone. The company runs a special TCS dedicated sweepstakes for a chance to take home a character from the featured art piece of the night, plus $100 in movie tickets. “Each Thursday night, thousands of people on the pier get to see the work of these artists and share in their passion for movies— that’s what Fandango is all about,” said Rockmore. “Our company's featured partner night is on the last night of the festival, Sept. 10, and we’re thrilled to sponsor this year’s culmination of one of L.A.’s favorite summer traditions.”

Jefferson Starship lands at the Pier ecades ago, when David Freiberg and Paul Kantner lived in Venice for a summer, they regularly walked to the Santa Monica Pier. They weren’t necessarily looking for musical inspiration — just for fun. “We just had a good time hanging on the beach,” Freiberg says. The memories of their time in the Southern California sunshine come roaring back as Freiberg and Kantner prepare to lead Jefferson Starship into the Twilight Concert Series for an anticipated Aug. 27 engagement at the pier, where they will delight fans with songs from their cavernous classic rock catalogue. It’s a testament to the durability of Jefferson Starship, which was founded by members of Jefferson Airplane and which has overcome several lineup changes to establish itself not only as a living connection to a bygone era in music but as a pillar of the psychedelic rock genre. “We’re sticking to what we know how to do,” says Freiberg, a former Airplane member. “And there’s such a plethora of material to sing. ... I’m looking forward to this one. It’s a nice place to be.” The local connections run deep for the members of Jefferson Starship, whose lineup currently includes Freiberg and Kantner as well as Cathy Richardson (vocals), Jude Gold (lead guitar), Chris Smith (keyboard) and Donny Baldwin (drums). Kantner and his band members are
D
celebrating the 50th anniversary of Jefferson Airplane, which was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1996. The half-century of history includes a 1967 show with the Doors at the Cheetah Club, previously known as the Aragon Ballroom, at the former Lick Pier in the Ocean Park district. It’s been a somewhat rocky journey of late for Kantner, who suffered a heart attack earlier this year. But he remains committed to touring with Jefferson Starship. “He’s still here,” Freiberg says of his longtime musical associate. “He seems to be doing his best to get back, and he wants to be out there. He’s doing fine.” Freiberg is also still rockin’ all these years later. A talented composer, multiinstrumentalist and key member of Quicksilver Messenger Service, he said he’s hoping to visit a local Buddhist center on Jefferson Starship’s swing through Santa Monica. “It never occurred to me that I’d live past 40,” he says. “But I’m having more fun than I ever did. I can’t complain about a thing. It’s great. It never ceases to amaze how much fun you can have.” Richardson, meanwhile, has stepped in to fill the void left by former Airplane/ Starship singer Grace Slick. She has become accustomed to — and skilled at — standing in for legendary female musicians, even portraying Janis Joplin in the
JEFFERSON STARSHIP
Off Broadway production of “Love, Janis.” “She’s doing the songs that were Grace’s, and she’s doing them in her own way but in the aura of Grace’s spirit,” Freiberg says. Slick no longer performs with the band, but she’s been active in the local arts scene in recent years. She’s had works on exhibit at galleries in Santa Monica and surrounding areas, including her pro-marijuana 420 Collection. Even without Slick’s distinct vocals, which will live on through hits like Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love,” Jefferson Starship lives on. With the help of Gold, Smith and Baldwin, the band has managed to retain much of its original character while bringing in new talents and influ-
ences. Gold has filled in for Slick Aguilar, Smith has toured with The Supremes and Lou Bega, and Baldwin brings his experiences of touring, recording and playing with artists like Van Morrison, Chuck Berry and Kenny Loggins. “Playing for people is the whole joy of being a musician,” Freiberg says. “We’re just a group that loves to play. It’s what we’ve been doing all along. “I love playing free shows. It’s a great thing for a community to do something like that.” Asked whether Jefferson Starship’s material ever feels stale, Freiberg responds in the negative. “It feels alive every time we play it,” he says.

JEFFERSON STARSHIP with PURPLE MOUNTAINS MAJESTIES RUSTY'S EAC WINNER
Paul Kantner founded Jefferson Airplane in 1965. The Airplane were the biggest rock group in America during the 1960s and the first San Francisco band to sign a major record deal, paving the way for other legends like Grateful Dead & Janis Joplin. They headlined the original Woodstock Festival in 1969 and like The Beatles with whom they are critically compared, lasted a mere seven years ... though their influence and impact on rock music continues well into the 21st century. In 1974 Mr. Kantner created Jefferson Starship and again enjoyed chart-topping success. Paul, & Jefferson Airplane were inducted into The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1996, the same year as Pink Floyd. Jefferson Starship, the name created by Paul for his 1971 solo debut “Blows Against The Empire” recording, has endured 40 years as one of rock's most legendary bands. That recording was the first and only to ever be nominated for literary science fiction's Hugo Award. Co-founder David Freiberg also start-
ed the legendary Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Fillmore era San Francisco band who often shared the bill with The Dead & The Airplane). David is a world famous singer, producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist. He was also a member of Jefferson Airplane, and co-wrote one of Jefferson Starship's all-time biggest hits, “Jane” - which he performs. From 1973 to 1978 Donny Baldwin was with the "Elvin Bishop" Band. During this time he toured and recorded six albums, which included the #1 hit single, "Fooled Around and Fell In Love". From 1981 to 1989, Donny was a member of Jefferson Starship. In January 1994, he joined the Jerry Garcia Band. Chris Smith joined Jefferson Starship in 1998, having toured with The Supremes and Lou Bega. Chris has gone on to place music in film and television including the #1 rated series “CSI.” In 2000 he assumed the seeming impossible task of playing piano and (synth) bass simultaneously … a feat only duplicated by the legendary Ray Manzarek of The Doors. Cathy Richardson joined Jefferson Starship in 2008, and anchors the historic 'role' made famous by Grace Slick.
She is an award winning music artist, graphic artist, and clothing designer. Her professional credits include fronting her own successful rock band, producing and releasing seven albums on various indie record labels. She was nominated for a Grammy Award for Art Direction of her band's 2003 release, “The Road to Bliss,” which also received two DIY Awards (Do It Yourself in Film, Books and Music) for Album Art of the Year and Producer of the Year. Jude Gold is an acclaimed lead guitarist - joining in 2012 for a 10 country, three-month international tour replacing longtime lead player Slick Aguilar who recently underwent a liver transplant. Jude also tours with contemporary stars Miguel Migs, Stu Hamm and JGB (Jerry Garcia's Band) before that. He is also a “professor” at the acclaimed Musician's Institute in Los Angeles.

WEEK 10 ~ SEPTEMBER 10
TUNE-YARDS with AVID DANCER Merrill Garbus has performed as tUnEyArDs since 2009, and that band name has always been synonymous with forward movement — whether because of her explosive performance style or the alwayssurprising way in which her songs unfold. First gaining notice with the debut BiRdBrAiNs, Garbus forged a reputation as a formidable live presence through relentless touring. In 2011, tUnE-yArDs released its second album, w h o k i l l, a startling and sonically adventurous statement that led to a whirlwind period where Garbus and bassist Nate Brenner accrued accolades from critics, performed in front of increasing numbers of rapturous crowds around the world, and collaborated with the likes
13
of Yoko Ono and ?uestlove. Callbacks to the past are all over Nikki Nack, the bands third album. Garbus’s vocal performance on ‘Wait For A Minute’ recalls Quiet Storm balladry, and the song also contains a direct callback to her own past: A wobbly keyboard line provided by a Casio she received as a gift when she was nine years old. ‘Left Behind’ is underscored by a jittery nostalgia, the playground chant from which the album’s title is taken eventually giving way to a chorus where Garbus’s voice is masked by glossyyet tarnished production that brings to mind the radio reigns of Lisa Lisa and En Vogue. Nikki Nack has uncertainty about both the past and the future, but that’s in keeping with Garbus’s overall aesthetic of constantly questioning and burrowing for a “new way,” tempered by the joy that goes hand in hand with new discoveries.
