March 24, 2019 Dear Friends, On behalf of the City of Los Angeles, welcome to the 34th Annual Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. Today, about 24,000 runners from all 50 states and more than 70 countries will experience the one-of-a-kind Stadium to Sea course, beginning at Dodger Stadium and moving west to the Santa Monica Pier. The route takes athletes through some of our most iconic neighborhoods and past many of L.A.’s most incredible sights. Congratulations to this year’s athletes, and everyone who works so hard to make this event possible. I am especially grateful to Skechers Performance — back again as title partner — and all of the other partners who make this a world-class marathon. Best wishes for a fun and successful race.

Sincerely,

ERIC GARCETTI Mayor

Dear Runners, Supporters and Fans: Welcome to the 2019 Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon! Now in our fourth year as title sponsor, we are proud to host more than 24,000 runners from all 50 states and more than 63 countries from around the world, who will join us in bringing this monumental event to life. As a global brand based in Los Angeles, we love sharing our amazing community with each and every one of you. As we all share in the excitement of the approaching race day on Sunday, March 24, please take a moment to reflect on the incredible journey that brought you here. Every story is unique—from first-time marathoners, to half marathoners/charity runners, seasoned racers, and elite athletes. We commend you for choosing to participate in the 2019 Skechers Performance™ Los Angeles Marathon®. The hours. The miles. The training. The sacrifices. We recognize the dedication and perseverance that led to your racing the “Stadium to the Sea” course. And every runner needs a support team—so we graciously thank the friends and families who will be cheering along the course and the many volunteers giving their time and energy to make this event a huge success. As it weaves through iconic landmarks and neighborhoods, the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon is also a celebration of our community—one that wouldn’t be possible without our city officials whose pledge to this great city of Los Angeles has helped the marathon thrive for over 30 years. Enjoy your race and feel proud of this achievement! Whether you’re here for the pure love of running, camaraderie, to set a new personal record, or to raise money for an incredible cause, we look forward to seeing each of you at the finish line in Santa Monica, and presenting you with a much-deserved finisher medal. Kind regards,

MICHAEL GREENBERG President, Skechers USA, Inc. MICHAEL GREENBERG

Dear Friends: On behalf of Conqur Endurance Group and our partners, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to Marathon Week and the 34th Edition of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. The week’s festivities kick off at Dodger Stadium on Sunday, March 17th when more than 6,000 students will take on their final mile to complete a marathon over an 8-week period as part of the LAUSD Beyond the Bell running program. It is wonderful to see the kids celebrate fitness and running in this world-class setting. On Friday, March 22 and Saturday, March 23, the LA Convention Center welcomes more than 45,000 athletes and supporters to the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon Health and Fitness Expo. Some of the leading brands in the world will feature their latest products and services including title sponsor Skechers Performance, BIG 5 Sporting Goods, Hyundai, Muscle Milk and CLIF Bar. On Saturday the 23rd, Dodger Stadium will be ready for some 4,000 athletes who will participate in the LA Big 5K and the LA 1/2K Kids Run. The 5K marks the third and final stage of the Triple 5K Tour of LA, comprised of the Santa Monica Classic 5K, the Pasadena 5K at the Rose Bowl and the LA Big 5K. Hundreds of runners will proudly receive their Triple 5K Tour of LA bonus medal as they complete the LA Big 5K. Overnight, Dodger Stadium will be transformed to welcome more than 24,000 athletes who will toe the line to run the iconic Stadium to the Sea course. For those who love to earn the bling, there are no less than 4 medals up for grabs at the Marathon’s Finish Line: - Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon finisher medal; - Conqur LA Challenge medal for participating in the Santa Monica Classic, the Pasadena Half Marathon at the Rose Bowl and the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon; - LA Double Play medal for completing the LA Big 5K and the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon; - and the very bold – and gold – LA Loyal medal replicating the inaugural 1986 Los Angeles Marathon medal for those completing 10 or more consecutive Marathons with us. We’re proud to partner with 70 nonprofit organizations at this year’s Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. Over the years, our charity program partners have raised more than $50 million for important environmental, educational, civic and health related causes. We sincerely appreciate the support from our partner cities in Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica, without whose partnership and collaboration the marathon could not take place. The same is true of our 5,000 enthusiastic and loyal volunteers whose efforts are invaluable and paramount to producing a marathon of this scale. We are grateful to each and every volunteer and encourage our participants to thank one or a few throughout the weekend. On behalf of our amazing partners and incredible staff, I wish everyone the best of luck and congratulate you on your tremendous achievements. Sincerely,

TRACEY RUSSELL Chief Executive Officer

STADIUM TO THE SEA SCENIC RUN DISTINGUISHES LA FROM THE RUNNING WORLD 10th Anniversary of the Stadium to the Sea Course

W

hen Frank McCourt acquired the operating rights to the Marathon in 2008, his vision was for a race course that would start at the iconic Dodger Stadium and end with a runner’s feet planted proudly in beach sand.

“THE COURSE TELLS THE STORY OF LOS ANGELES LIKE NO OTHER CIVIC EVENT CAN.” That vision became reality in 2010 when the the Stadium to the Sea Course came to fruition, starting at Dodger Stadium, traversing through Downtown Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and finishing steps away from the beach in Santa Monica, instantly changing the trajectory of the Marathon. The course tells the story of Los Angeles as no other civic event can-- Los Angeles itself is a large, sprawling, diverse landscape connected by freeways and transit, punctuated by culture. The course highlights the city and its inhabitants by being the perfect tour

of Greater Los Angeles: The race begins at iconic Dodger Stadium and dips to Downtown’s colorful Chinatown Dragon Gates and vibrant Olvera Street. It then twists through the hipster commune of Silverlake, dashes through Hollywood’s landmarks and breezes through Beverly Hills. The tour-of-sorts comes to close with runners finishing the race along Santa Monica’s spectacular beachfront. “One of the most unique aspects about the Los Angeles Marathon is its ‘Stadium to the Sea’ course,” Kathryn S. Schloessman, President of Los Angeles Sports & Entertainment Commission said. “Runners enjoy a true taste of L.A. … With spectacular weather and tremendous crowd support, participants feel like Hollywood celebrities.” As the reputation of the course grows, it is becoming a must-do, bucket-list marathon for local, national and international runners. “It’s a striking visual and auditory experience for anyone,” said Conqur’s Senior Director of Operations, Stacy Embretson. “The crowds cheering you on while you’re running and you’re taking it all in — historic landmarks, shifting neighborhoods — there are so many things to see. New York, Chicago and Boston are great marathons, no doubt, but there’s nothing in the world like running

through these recognizable parts of the city that embody LA and making that final turn on Ocean Avenue, seeing

“WITH SPECTACULAR WEATHER AND TREMENDOUS CROWD SUPPORT, PARTICIPANTS FEEL LIKE HOLLYWOOD CELEBRITIES.”

the Pier and finish line in the distance.” Whether an LA native, LA newbie or a tourist in town to see the marathon, you should consider participating next year. With wonderful weather, historic sights and a taste of what makes LA great, why wouldn’t you run this thing? The Stadium to the Sea course is the perfect run for an unforgettable experience with no red lights.

CONQUR LA CHALLENGE AND THE TRIPLE 5K TOUR OF LA C

rossing the finish line of a race is a rush of endorphins like no other-- It’s one of the reasons people keep doing this thing. Sure, you get the self-high five of “Hey, I finished a race!”, but getting a sweet shiny medal is pretty cool, too. A medal symbolizes all the blood, sweat, and tears it took for you to put one foot in front of the other and finish punishing your body just for the hell of it. If you’re a fan of the runner’s high experience (and filling that trophy room with some shimmering new medals) , Conqur has a few races for you.

CONQUR ENDURANCE GROUP OFFERS THE CONQUR LA CHALLENGE AND THE TRIPLE 5K TOUR OF LA

T

he Triple 5K Tour LA is comprised of the Santa Monica Classic 5K, the Pasadena 5K at the Rose Bowl, and the LA BIG 5K at Dodger Stadium. A nice little trek of LA in an experience fit for any level of runner. The Conqur LA Challenge sees runners starting with a 5k or 10k at the Santa

34

Monica Classic, raises the bar at the Pasadena Half Marathon, and culminates in 26.2 miles at the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. A fun series of runs, meant for the wily veteran looking to push their endurance. Whatever your experience may be, all runners will receive a medal after each race AND a bonus medal at the finish line of the third race, whether that’s the LA BIG 5K or the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. So, why not try something

new? Run multiple races, train for a bigger goal, and challenge yourself-- you’ll

A DOCTOR’S ADVICE FOR RACE DAY WELLNESS

hether this is your first marathon or your 50th, getting to the starting and finish lines in one piece is important for everybody, including us at Conqur! While prepping for the big run can be done alone, we at Conqur can and want to help you successfully traverse the Stadium to the Sea course and arrive at that Finish Line with a big (exasperated) smile. Are you maybe worried about sweet sustenance during the race? Along the course there are 22 aid stations with water and Gatorade Endurance Formula available. CLIF SHOT® Energy Gels will be available at miles 12 and 19. Freaked out about getting a brutal cramp? Should you encounter any issues, Medical Stations will be located at all even miles beginning at Mile 6. During a marathon, it’s always good advice to take care of those little, kinda scary things before they become bigger things that might prevent you from finishing. So, to give you a few pointers for all-around marathon advice, we reached out to Dr. Alex Weber, an orthopaedic surgeon specializing in sports medicine at Keck Medicine of USC:

Race Advice STICK TO ROUTINE “One of the big things is keeping your routine. Most marathon runners — even first-timers — have done long runs and know what their body needs. 38

Stick with your routine. Not every athlete is the same. Some runners may need massive carb-loading the night before, some may need high-protein the night before. Both these work for certain people but do what you do for marathon and long-distance practice and apply that to the actual marathon.”

your splits and pace when training and stick with that game plan on the day of. Don’t wing it. Have an idea of how you want to attack the marathon and what pace you’d like to keep. There’s adrenaline running through you on the day of the marathon and I get that. Just stick to the plan and don’t deviate because of your feelings.

BEFORE RACE KICK-OFF BE IT MINUTES OR MONTHS, BE HYDRATED, WARM UP AND GET SOME REST “Drink water, Gatorade or whatever hydrating drink works for you, the athlete. Warm up well and make sure your muscles are warm and ready. Though these miles will fly by, this race will feel long for your body. Break a little sweat, stretch, get in a pre-race jog, whatever you need to be ready to go. Just make sure you’re not doing this run cold turkey. Even weeks prior to a marathon, it’s of the utmost importance to be getting a lot of rest. You can’t be burning the candle on both ends and expect your body to adjust to such an intensive task. Your body needs to train, recover and rest.”

IS IT OKAY TO EAT AND DRINK THINGS DURING THE RACE? Absolutely. Eat the snacks and drink the water. You need to replenish as you go. You can’t run 26 miles without expending lots of energy, you need to refortify. Listen to your body and use those resources when available.”

APPLY PRACTICE TO RACE DAY “Most people don’t go on a 5-mile run and then up and do a marathon, they practice for this for weeks and months prior, and that’s the best time to experience what’s best for your body. Listen to it. Keep track of

OK, WILL DO. BUT WHAT SHOULDN’T I EAT OR DRINK BEFORE OR ON RACE DAY? “Lots of milk or dairy products don’t agree with most runners, same goes with things high in sugar, bad sugars like desserts and pastries. Some carbs are good during and before a race but please, stay away from bad sugar. A milkshake is probably not ideal before a race.” WHEN SHOULD I SEEK MEDICAL HELP? “The obvious ones are chest pains, lightheadedness, blurred vision, dizziness— these are heat stroke, dehydration things. If you experience these, you should definitely call for someone’s attention. Cramping may occur and that’s the body’s

2019 SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON

way of saying maybe you haven’t taken enough in of hydration or nutrition.” I’VE HEARD OF HITTING THE MUCH-DREADED WALL AND IT FREAKS ME THE HECK OUT. WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WHEN IT HAPPENS? CAN I AVOID IT? “All you can do is take nutrition and hydration seriously, make sure the body has the energy it needs to hit the race. The other thing is, everyone hits The Wall at some point. There needs to be some mental fortitude to push through it. Rely on your training. Know you’ve done it before and can pull through.” POST-RACE TIPS: WHAT DO I DO AFTER THE RACE? “Immediately hydrate and stretch, you want to cool down appropriately. Don’t hit the 26.2 marker and head straight for the bar, that’s not going to go well. However, once you’ve hydrated and cooled down, celebrating is a good thing and can be done. Go out and enjoy yourself. In the days after a marathon, hydrating and getting rid of the lactic acid that built up will be key. Going on light runs the following week is fine, getting the lactic acid out. Stretch again. Once a week maybe, listen to your body, and if knees or hips are sore, get on the bike or elliptical, something soft on your joints. Your body will tell you when to run long distance again.”

33RD TIME’S THE CHARM

LEGACY RUNNER TO TACKLE 26.2 YET AGAIN

T

he starting line of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon is a place of sights and sounds. Runners taking deep breaths, stretching and popping those joints one last time while an electric crowd is ready to burst with excitement. It’s a lot to take in for a first-time runner. But for some, it’s still exciting, even their 33rd time. Wait-- 33rd time? Who would leave behind such an awe-inspiring legacy?

LEGACY RUNNERS HAVE A PERMANENT NUMBER THAT MEMBERS CARRY WITH THEM EACH YEAR. Someone like Rick Wallace, an Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon Legacy Runner. At 61 years old, Rick is one of the younger members of the Legacy Runners, a club of marathon-goers who have ran every year since the event’s inception. Wallace was only 28 years old when he caught wind of the big run, inspired by an advertisement he saw on the Olympics. “Silly as it sounds, they showed an advertisement where you’d be finishing the run in the LA Coliseum. You ended up not running inside the Coliseum, just outside of it, but that first year was fun. I wanted to keep going.” 42

As he heads to his 33rd marathon, Wallace is grateful for what the marathon has done to transform his life. He appreciates being able to run 16 miles tomorrow if he wanted and of course enjoys bragging about that Legacy Runner bib. Not a bib to shield you from the mess you might make, post-marathon foodbinge; This bib is reserved for the Legacy Runners. While every runner gets a bib with a number in the race, Legacy Runners have a permanent number that members carry with them each year. “It’s a source of pride,” Wallace says. “We all wear our permanent numbers and people recognize us. It’s nice, every year I’m constantly being asked about it and people think it’s a cool feat. There’s a lot of nice recognition and with that a lot of satisfaction.” As the numbers on his

RICK WALLACE

bib begin to fade, so do the Legacy Runner’s ranks. Wallace says when he first became aware of the group, they were a network of 500 strong. That number dwindled to 282 about 15 years ago and now stands at a little over 130. That makes the feat of Wallace and other Legacy Runners so special, a true once in a lifetime achieve-

2019 SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON

ment. “You know, it does get harder each year, definitely,” Wallace says, ruminating on year to year changes in his body and the Legacy numbers thinning. “Weight, age and height factor in and add time... you can’t avoid the age part, no matter what you do. But I wouldn’t change anything. When I run this marathon I feel invincible. I know the others in the group feel the same.”

AT 61 YEARS OLD, RICK IS ONE OF THE YOUNGER MEMBERS OF THE LEGACY RUNNERS, A CLUB OF MARATHON - GOERS WHO HAVE RAN EVERY YEAR SINCE THE EVENT’S INCEPTION.

BASEBALL LEGENDS LOOK TO HIT A HOME RUN WITH FUNDRAISING GOALS AT LA MARATHON

T

wo of baseball’s biggest names in Southern California are swinging for the fences at this year’s Skechers Performance LA Marathon. However, instead of wielding bats, they’ll be wielding the power of charity. Justin Turner and Albert Pujols will both be in attendance at LA’s biggest running event and instead of suiting up against each other as they would during baseball season, they’ll both be using their all-star platforms to raise money for each of their respective foundations. The Justin Turner Foundation raises funds and works with charities that help homeless veterans and children with life-altering illnesses while the Pujols Foundation helps serve the Down syndrome community and also focuses on bringing medical care and other programs to the less fortunate in the Dominican Republic.

“WHEN YOU’RE A PRO ATHLETE, TO UNDERSTAND THE PLATFORM AND REACH YOU HAVE TO IMPACT A LIFE IS IMPORTANT,” “God has given me so much in my life and at the end of the day, it’s about giving back,” Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim player Albert Pujols said. “We do 46

a lot of work with kids with Down syndrome. I have a daughter with Down syndrome, and she’s the reason why we started our foundation.” Justin Turner echoed Pujol’s sentiments. “When you’re a pro athlete, to understand the platform and reach you have to impact a life is important,” Dodgers’ Justin Turner said. “In pairing up with an unbelievable organization like the LA Marathon and the history they have in our city, it makes complete sense to have this partnership and go out and raise money to help impact people’s lives for the better.” The Marathon will be the first for the Pujols Foundation, who are seeking to raise at least $30k for their causes. Turner’s foundation, co-founded with his wife

Kourtney who also ran in the marathon last year, will be seeking to improve upon last year’s haul of around $36k. Doing good with the foundation, Kourtney says, is the legacy she and her husband would like to leave behind. “I think for Justin and I, giving back always came natural to us,” she said. “He’s been given an immense platform and he has a God-given talent. It’s great to look back on big games and accomplishments, sure, but what we’ll always remember is the good we did and what we were able to do for those vulnerable in society, and that’s his legacy with the city.” Turner says he’s excited at the prospect of attending a second marathon and working for a good cause next to Pujols. Anyone’s first LA Marathon, Turner says,

2019 SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON

is something they’ll never forget. “I didn’t realize or understand how big of a deal it was,” Turner said with a laugh. “How many runners would show up -- how many people on the streets handing out water and oranges and bananas, bands playing music on the street -- it was completely shocking, a jaw-dropping moment when you go out there and u see the runners accomplish running 26.2 miles, which is ridiculous in mind-- I train to run 90-feet. Waiting for the finish line to see Kourt finish, to seeing a range of emotion in people falling to hands and knees in tears, people jumping up and down for accomplishing something that’s a mental physical grind and challenge... it’s neat, man.”

CONQUR YOUTH PROGRAMS ARE BORN TO RUN

ike any journey in life, a runner’s journey has to start somewhere. Conqur Endurance Group knows this well. To introduce budding athletes to the joys and benefits of running, Conqur offers programs to runners of all ages, including impressionable students.

OVER 20,000 STUDENTS FROM MORE THAN 300 LAUSD SCHOOLS PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM. Conqur is an Operating Partner with LA Unified School District in the 26th Mile program, an afterschool program that teaches elementary school students the importance of combining healthy nutritional choices with physical activity. Over 20,000 students from more than 300 LAUSD schools participate in the program. Students run half a mile to 1 mile a day for eight weeks, culminating in running their last mile – the 26th Mile - at their designated school site or, for 6,000 lucky students, at Dodger Stadium. Hovik Kasamanyan, Senior Director of Beyond the Bell, says the program is invaluable for the students. After all, he says, only 1% of the world’s population has run a marathon. “This is so instrumental for students to do, to see they can accomplish 50

OF THE OVER 3,000 STUDENTS WHO PARTICIPATE IN THE PROGRAM, 99% FINISH THE MARATHON. 95% GRADUATE FROM HIGH SCHOOL AND 95% OF THE HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS HAVE PLANS TO ATTEND COLLEGE. anything,” Kasamanyan said. “The program teaches healthy lifestyles and encourages families to join in with their children. Kids have a lot of fun running and walking and doing miles at their own pace. 26th Mile shows students they’re able to accomplish anything, that a consistently healthy life is attainable.” Nonprofit Students Run LA is another youth program Conqur partners with to give about $1 million in free or reduced-price race entries. SRLA and Conqur also provide over 3,000 at-risk LAUSD students with an opportunity to train and run the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon annually. The program pairs stu-

dents with teacher mentors who assist students in their training by setting goals, teaching them responsibility and discipline. Naomi Rich, SRLA’s Marketing and Communications Associate, says SRLA’s training program empowers students who might otherwise fall through society’s cracks. “Students who’ve struggled with drinking and drugs or who have struggled academically, SRLA connects them with a mentor that provides them with an opportunity-- a supportive community, to have someone say, ‘I care’ and ‘You can do it’, It makes an impact.” SRLA is an amazing program: Of the over 3,000 students who participate in the program, 99% finish the marathon. 95% graduate from high school and 95% of the high school seniors have plans to attend college. It’s a program that has helped shape the futures of many kids who may have otherwise

2019 SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON

been forgotten. Aurora, a senior at Bell High School, is training for her second Marathon this year and says the program has been life-changing. “The moment when I cross the finish line, I realized everyone can do what they think they can’t. Anyone can conquer anything. You just have to believe in yourself.” Aside from transforming students into world-class athletes, Conqur offers running events for the whole family to enjoy like the LA BIG 5K and LA 1/2K Kids Run. Participants of all ages and athletic ability — whether running, walking, being pushed in a stroller — are encouraged to engage in an unforgettable fitness experience at LA’s iconic Dodger Stadium (Go Blue!). Both runs begin at the Marathon Starting Line, giving participants the same big-race feel that the marathoners experience the following day.

to Los Angeles. It was popularized by the Nat King Cole Trio song “Get Your Kicks On” Route 66.

Originally a series of streets, this area became a pedestrian-prioritized mall in 1965, dubbed The Santa Monica Mall. Since then, the Santa Monica Mall has experienced revitalization, a renaming to the Third Street Promenade, and a Frank Gehry-designed shopping center.

First built in 1909, it wasn’t until 1922 when the famed carousel was added, earning world-famous status, beloved by locals and tourists alike. Today the Pier hosts events ranging from political debates to strongman competitions to music concerts.

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:

IT TAKES A VILLAGE… AND SOME SPECIAL VOLUNTEERS T

he Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon is a mammoth occasion, an event that consumes a large portion of Los Angeles on race day. That’s 26.2 miles of carefully plotted course, strewn together with cheering fans, food and hydration stations, and blaring music that keeps a runners’ blood flowing. The unsung heroes in the mayhem of the Marathon? Volunteers. These kind individuals provide those on race day with a smile and some help, giving their free time for a good cause. Sometimes, that free time can equate up to 33 years of one’s life. Just ask Edgar Ninofranco. Ninofranco has been a volunteer with the marathon since its first year, an ad in the LA Times spurring him and his college alumni network into action. Wanted to serve his immediate community, volunteering at the Marathon was also about serving his adopted country. “I believe as an immigrant to this country that’s been in LA for a long, long time, we owe our adopted country and community,” he said. “Rendering this service to Los Angeles and the Marathon, we are giving back all the things the community has given us or offered us. This felt important to me.” Ninofranco was bitten by the volunteering bug on day 60

est memories have been the unique experiences he’s had along the way. “One year our location was in the Hollywood area. We were able to work with musicians that had provided music for the Marathon for several years. We got to listen to them play all day and had a chance to meet local celebrities... including the Playboy Bunnies. Those were some of the happiest experiences I’ve ever had.”

one and never looked back. He began as a basic volunteer, doing whatever he could to help. Volunteering from Ninofranco’s pals thinned out over the years but Ninofranco didn’t mind, he was in love with helping.

THESE KIND INDIVIDUALS PROVIDE THOSE ON RACE DAY WITH A SMILE AND SOME HELP, GIVING THEIR FREE TIME FOR A GOOD CAUSE. “Once you’ve done your volunteering, your spirit is rewarded. Sometimes I wouldn’t report to work the following day because my body ached, but my spirit always felt fulfilled.” At a spry 65 years young, Ninofranco is now the

water station captain of the Marathon, a job he takes as seriously as his former aerospace-related job. He wakes up at 5 a.m. to set up water refueling stations for runners , ensuring his job is well done with no room for error. Even in his old age he carries gallons of water to stations and typically goes above and beyond his duties; Though not required, Ninofranco says when he’s able he creates a sprinkler shower via hose and fire hydrant to help cool off the runners. “You can see how grateful they are when they’re on the 15th mile and need water,” Ninofranco said with a laugh. A life of volunteering has been a fulfilling one for Ninofranco. He says the people he’s met and joy he derives from helping others keeps him going as he ages. His fond-

“AS AN IMMIGRANT TO THIS COUNTRY THAT’S BEEN IN LA FOR A LONG, LONG TIME, WE OWE OUR ADOPTED COUNTRY AND COMMUNITY,” As he pushes closer to 70, he’s thought about hanging up the proverbial cleats, but it’s been difficult considering a goodbye. “Honestly, ever since I turned 65 last year, I’ve been contemplated leaving, I’ve done enough,” he said. “I’ve thought, Maybe it’s time for someone to replace me and give this responsibility to a younger member. But I still enjoy doing it and, in all honesty, there’s some reservations on my part. I’m not getting any younger but I love this. I love volunteering.”
