This year, we are excited to host runners from 35 countries from around the world who will join us in bringing this monumental event to life. On Sunday, March 19, 2017, you will be accomplishing something many people only dream about. From first-time marathoners, to charity runners, to seasoned racers, and elite athletes, we commend you for choosing to participate in the 2017 Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. You have put in many long hours—training and making sacrifices—to embark on this momentous “Stadium to the Sea” race. We want to thank you for your dedication and perseverance. We also want to thank all the countless supporters; from the friends and families who will be cheering along the course, to the many volunteers giving their time and energy. MICHAEL GREENBERG
Dear Friends: On behalf of Conqur Endurance Group and our partners, I’d like to personally welcome you to Marathon Week. Athletes from around the world are here in Los Angeles for the 32nd edition of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon, the headline event in a week full of festivities celebrating health and fitness. Over 24,000 athletes will run the Stadium to the Sea course on March 19th, and one week prior, over 6,000 students will pave the way as they participate in the 26th Mile at Dodger Stadium. The event serves as the final mile of an 8-week cumulative marathon completed as part of the LAUSD Beyond the Bell running program. On Friday and Saturday, over 45,000 athletes and supporters will convene at the LA Convention Center as we host the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon Health and Fitness Expo. Here, you’ll have the chance to interact with a host of world class brands we are proud to call our partners, including title sponsor Skechers Performance, Hyundai, Air France, Fitbit, Muscle Milk, Angel City Brewery, CLIF Bar, 2XU and Big 5 Sporting Goods. On Saturday, Dodger Stadium will provide the perfect backdrop for the LA BIG 5K. The race is the third and final stage of the Triple 5K Tour of LA, a challenge put forth by Conqur Endurance Group. Eligible runners will be awarded an inaugural, commemorative medal for completing the Santa Monica Classic 5K and the Pasadena 5K at the Rose Bowl before capping off the trifecta at Dodger Stadium on March 18th. All eyes will be on Los Angeles on Sunday March 19th as you run from Dodger Stadium to Santa Monica with a backstage pass to the most glamorous city in the world. For some, this will be the end of a journey, for others it will simply be the beginning. Nearly 2,000 athletes will be completing the final stage of the Conqur LA Challenge, a journey that has taken them from the Santa Monica Classic to the Pasadena Half Marathon at the Rose Bowl before culminating with an epic marathon finish and a large, beautiful piece of hardware to commemorate their accomplishment. We’re proud to partner with more than 100 charitable organizations at this year’s Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon, providing an important stage for our runners to raise millions of dollars. Over the years, our charity partners have raised more than $43 million for important environmental, educational, civic and health related causes. As a first in our business, we have teamed up with Snapchat. Together with our sponsors and charity partners, we’ll provide over 40 exclusive geofilters for our athletes and spectators to use on race day and give everyone a chance to engage in an exciting and memorable social media activation, which will be the first and largest initiative in Snapchat’s history. At this year’s marathon, we are also collaborating with Guinness Book of World Records to allow our athletes to make March 19th more memorable by setting a world record on the Stadium to the Sea course. We are grateful for the support from our partner cities, Los Angeles, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica and the more than 5,000 volunteers without whose efforts and support we simply would not be able to do what we do – thank you! On behalf of our partners, we wish the best of luck to everyone participating in our marathon week festivities.

RUNNING FOR THE MIND AND BODY N
o one can argue that marathoners are dedicated and devoted high-performance aerobic athletes. Now, no one can argue that there are some real health benefits to aerobic athletics as well. These benefits apply to both the elite and recreational runner. “Aerobic exercise, including running, prevents various medical issues and can guard against cardiac, vascular, respiratory and endocrine disease,” said Dr. Alexander E. Weber, MD, an Assistant Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery at Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California. The evidence shows that aerobic exercise positively impacts all of the aforementioned organ systems. There have been many large prospective studies that have demonstrated decreased rates of coronary heart disease in those that exercise regularly. For exam-

ple, “in a prospective national study of 538 long-distance runners compared with 423 non-runner control subjects aged 50 and older, researchers found that long distance runners had overall higher survival rates and lower disability scores compared to control subjects at greater than 20 years,” said Dr. Weber. In fact, there is a direct relationship between inactivity and the risk of cardiovascular disease or death. Sedentary individuals who began running were able to achieve tangible health benefits, including decreased blood sugar and triglyceride levels. Running and aerobic exercise have also been shown to decrease circulating inflammatory markers. Those opposed to running often cite the burden imposed on the musculoskeletal system. Dr. Weber states that running injuries to the musculoskeletal system are often due to poor form or nutrition rather than the act of running itself. Furthermore, the benefits of running to the musculoskeletal system include increased muscle mass, increased skeletal mass, and decreased fragility. And, there has yet to be a longitudinal study that has been able to demonstrate a longterm detrimental effect of running on either hip or knee cartilage. Interestingly, “a recent study of 953 marathon runners demonstrated no increased prevalence of hip or knee arthritis compared to the average US
population,” said Dr. Weber. “In fact, the same study found that as physical activity decreased the likelihood of significant hip or knee arthritis increased!” Certainly running has been proven to provide multiple physical health benefits but it can also be psychologically beneficial. Believe it or not, running can make you happy. In a study published in Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, researchers found that even a 30-minute walk on the treadmill could instantly lift the mood of someone suffering from depression. Runners often experience a state of bliss, otherwise known as runners’ high. This feeling can often be described as a feeling of euphoria coupled with reduced anxiety. Dr. Weber states that the runners’ high is caused by an endorphin release and can lead to decreased stress, improved mood, and even help fight depression. Dr. Weber’s parting words were that “it ultimately comes down to the facts. Being
2017 SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON
healthy and active can decrease your likelihood of physical and mental illness, so go out there and run! Have fun and enjoy the marathon.” Keck Medicine of USC is the University of Southern California’s medical enterprise. It is one of only two university based medical systems in the Los Angeles area. As part of the university’s USC Health initiative, the medical enterprise encompasses academic, research and clinical excellence. Dr. Weber serves as a team physician for the USC Trojans.
“Aerobic exercise, including running, prevents various medical issues and can guard against cardiac, vascular, respiratory and endocrine disease,” Dr. Alexander E. Weber, MD Assistant Professor of Clinical Orthopedic Surgery, Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California

WATCHING THE PACK A spectator’s guide to this year’s Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon Y
ou don’t have to be running 26.2 miles to make March 19th truly memorable. The Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon has a myriad of opportunities for you to cheer and support your loved ones while listening to live music or taking part in one of several interactive cheer zones along the Stadium to the Sea route.
THE START LINE When 24,000 athletes converge at world-famous Dodger Stadium, you know it’s going to be a party. Live music courtesy of Calphonics will serve as the perfect prelude to Randy Newman’s “I Love LA”, when the marathon gets underway.
MILE 4: KOSHINTAIKO DRUMMERS The Koshin Taiko Drummers take the most challenging hill on the Stadium to the Sea course and turn it into an epic conquest that has become a favorite moment for many on race day. MILE 11: ANGEL CITY BREWERY AT HOLLYWOOD BLVD & ORANGE Take to the Hollywood Walk of Fame and join in on the party with Angel City Brewery, the official beer partner of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. There will be plenty of music and cheering, but you’ll have to wait for the finish line to enjoy one of Angel City’s delicious beers.
MILE 12.9: CHARITY RELAY EXCHANGE ZONE The excitement of race day is further heightened when you’re running for a special cause. The Charity Relay Exchange Zone is a truly special place to be as many of the official marathon charities are represented by nearly 1,200 athletes participating in the two-person relay. MILE 16: AIR FRANCE CHEER ZONE AT BUNDY & ALPINE Find a taste of France in Beverly Hills at the Air France Cheer zone, decked out with Parisian flare and live entertainment by DJ Mike Grimm. Brand ambassadors in French outfits with French flags will make you feel like you’re strolling down the Champs-Élysées.

MILE 19: CLIF CHEER ZONE AT SANTA MONICA BLVD & WESTWOOD The team at CLIF Bar knows how important the last seven miles of a marathon can be. They’ll be throwing a party at Mile 19, providing much needed fuel for the athletes and coffee for spectators. CEO’s perspective:
Q&A WITH CONQUR ENDURANCE GROUP CEO, TRACEY RUSSELL T
racey Russell joined Conqur Endurance Group 3 1/2 years ago. At the time, the company was known as LA Marathon LLC. We caught up with Tracey recently when she and her team were busy preparing for this year’s marathon week. Q: IT IS FAIR TO SAY THAT QUITE A FEW THINGS HAVE HAPPENED IN THE PAST 3 1/2 YEARS. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE MILESTONES YOU AND YOUR TEAM HAVE ACHIEVED AT CONQUR?
A: One of the first things I did upon arriving was to identify infrastructure needs. We brought on additional subject matter experts to complement the team already in place. Today, our very talented, full-time staff of 13, take pride in creating and executing world-class experiences that ignite passion in athletes and connect communities through the transformative power of sport. Other key milestones achieved include expanding our portfolio of events from one weekend to a yearround platform that now includes the Santa Monica Classic 5K/10K in September, the Pasadena Half Marathon and 5K in January and the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon and LA Big 5K in March. In 2016, our team partnered with the United States Olympic Committee and USA Track & Field in hosting the U.S Olympic Team Trials
Marathon making for an epic weekend of running. We also successfully took on the task of developing a new master brand that aligned more closely with our strategic direction for growth. Q: TELL US ABOUT WHY YOU DECIDED TO REBRAND THE COMPANY TO CONQUR ENDURANCE GROUP AND WHAT WAS THE RATIONALE BEHIND IT?
A: For most people, we are synonymous with the Los Angeles Marathon, our biggest property. Even though we have 5 other event properties, everything was hinged on the marathon brand from the way we did business but from a consumer perspective, the brand eco system was not easy to understand. Furthermore, we did not effectively delineate our market facing communications between consumers and businesses. So, we set out to create a new breed of endurance organization in Los Angeles. Through a process of reimagining and redefining, we identified what’s unique about the sport of endurance and celebrated it through the lens of this city to establish the framework of our new venture, Conqur Endurance Group. Partnering with local brand consultancy Innovation Protocol, we leveraged a thirty-year history of designing, marketing and executing endurance events in Los Angeles and paired it with a

vision of supporting the triumph of limits for every athlete, every partner and every charity we impact. Following the creation of the master brand with Innovation Protocol, our team took on phase two by ”refreshing” each property with its own distinct personality and branding treatment. We have created a cohesive inter-play between each one of the individual event brands that all ladder up to the master brand with shared and consistent use of colors, graphics and symbols. This has allowed us to communicate our business more effectively and expand our portfolio of properties in a more defined strategic direction. Q: WHAT WERE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF HOSTING THE U.S. OLYMPIC TEAM TRIALS MARATHON?
A: We were honored to be awarded the Olympic Team Trials Marathon by USA Track & Field and the
U.S. Olympic Committee and our team rose to the challenge of organizing two major marathons back to back on the same weekend. We had our core team manage both productions with additional support from seasoned industry professionals, some of whom had been involved in previous Olympic Trials. Hosting the trials meant designing, building and executing a marathon from scratch in partnership with USATF, the USOC, and our city agency partners in Los Angeles. One highlight was the pride, professionalism and tenacity of our city partners who not only supported our two events that weekend but also the 58th Annual Grammy Awards. The most meaningful aspect of hosting the Olympic Trials was providing a stage for America’s best marathoners where Los Angeles’ enthusiasm was felt all along the SEE INTERVIEW PAGE 34

course. The top 3 men and women who qualified at the Trials then went on to the Rio Olympic Games and had the best finish of any US marathon team in the history of Olympic marathons. Q: COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO CONQUR. HOW HAS YOUR TEAM’S WORK IN THIS AREA PROGRESSED?
A: Philanthropic partnerships are the cornerstone of Conqur Endurance Group. Our two key areas of focus are supporting nonprofit fundraising and fostering our youth initiatives. This year, the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon Charity Program includes nearly 100 official nonprofit partners who will raise an anticipated $4 million for their individual causes. Our impact doesn’t end there. We are thrilled to continue our 28-year partnership with Students Run LA, donating 3,500 marathon entries and ample support to their program as they make a lasting difference in the lives of young people in Los Angeles. Additionally, we’re proud to support LAUSD’s Beyond the Bell running program with the 26th Mile event, drawing more than 6,000 elementary school aged children to Dodger Stadium each year to run the final mile of an 8 week, cumulative marathon. Q: THIS YEAR MARKS THE 32ND RUNNING OF THE
34
A: Every year our team and our partners come up with creative and fun ways to experience the marathon with different activations. Through a first-of-its-kind partnership between Snap Inc and the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon, runners will have a unique way to commemorate their experiences on social media. During the marathon, more than 40 on-demand Snapchat Geofilters will allow runners to share the vibrancy and signature style of the race straight from the streets of Los Angeles to social media and mobile screens around the world by applying marathon-themed graphic overlays to their Snaps before sending to friends. Through a partnership with Southern California Special Olympics, we have created Rivalry Row between two of Los Angeles storied universities, USC and UCLA. Each team will go head to head with students, cheerleaders and bands as they face off on opposite sides of the course around Mile 20. Runners will be encouraged to declare their loyalty by running on the east side for USC and the west side for UCLA. We are also collaborating with Guinness Book of World Records to allow our athletes to make March 19th even more memorable by setting a world record on the Stadium to the Sea course. Preselected categories were determined before the race and close to 40 athletes will
be vying for a world record. Q: THE PASADENA HALF MARATHON AND 5K IS A NEW EVENT FOR CONQUR TAKING PLACE AT THE ROSE BOWL. HOW DID THAT EVENT COME ABOUT?
A: The addition of the Pasadena Half and 5K at the Rose Bowl is an output of our 3-year strategic plan that included adding a half marathon to our portfolio. If you look at it practically, we have a 5/10K event in September with the Santa Monica Classic and the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon in March. Looking at the training schedule and cadence between those two events and associated distances, we wanted to add a half marathon to our calendar, preferably in the latter part of January. Our assessment of several locations and venues led us to exploratory discussions with the Rose Bowl Operating Company. It became immediately clear they shared a similar vision of hosting a world-class half marathon at The Rose Bowl. The City of Pasadena, the Pasadena Convention Center, Kaiser Permanente and other local businesses also got behind supporting the event. The inaugural event on January 22, 2017 had more than 6,000 registered participants who loved the majestic finish on the grass inside the Rose Bowl. Through a postrace survey 91% told us they will be back next year! Q: YOUR TEAM HAS CREATED A COUPLE OF SPECIAL WAYS OF COMBINING THE
2017 SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON
DIFFERENT EVENTS YOU PRODUCE. CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THAT?
A: We want to inspire athletes to exceed extraordinary limits and our race calendar is designed with that in mind. This year, we introduced the Conqur LA Challenge and the Triple 5K Tour of LA to rave reviews from our athletes. The natural progression of distances works perfectly for someone who is new to running or a seasoned veteran of the sport. Athletes who complete the Santa Monica Classic 5K/10K, the Pasadena Half Marathon at the Rose Bowl and the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon, in that order, will earn an impressive, unique medal to commemorate their accomplishment. Knowing that running a marathon isn’t for everybody, we also created the Triple 5K for those preferring the shorter distance to complete a challenge earning a special medal and bragging rights. Q: IF YOU LOOK INTO A CRYSTAL BALL, WHAT DOES CONQUR LOOK LIKE 3 YEARS FROM NOW?
A: Our team is excited to further expand our portfolio of events and programs within the endurance space and perhaps look at opportunities that allow us to bring the vibrancy of Los Angeles to other cities in the US and elsewhere. We’re also driven to deliver meaningful impact with our community of charities and expect to grow that impact over the next 3 years.
MILES ARE JUST ONE WAY TO MEASURE A MARATHON
2016 WINNER KIRUI WELDON BREAKS THE TAPE AT THE FINISH LINE
Y
ou could measure the length in hours spent running to train, or perhaps the number of early morning runs. You could count every step: an estimated 45 thousand to get you to the finish line. To athletes, the shoes that will get them through every mile are one of their most important race companions. For most runners, the shoes they lace up on race day have already tread scores of those miles. The shoes provide a source of
stability – a known comfort that all those hours of training will carry you over the finish line. So when Weldon Kirui landed at LAX before the 2016 Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon and realized his luggage had been lost – many fellow runners can imagine his exasperation. His shoes were missing and Kirui realized there was no way they would make it to his hotel room before the start of the marathon.
Luckily, the race’s title sponsor had a new pair ready to go when he arrived. The brand new Skechers Performance GOmeb Speed 3 - 2016 racing flats still had that new shoe smell when he pulled them out of the box. He had no way of knowing those shoes were about to carry him faster than any other runner that foggy morning. Two hours and 13 minutes later, the soles had traveled the demanding 26.2
“We are a very serious athletic footwear company and we’re very serious about running. It was exciting to have our first title sponsorship be here in Los Angeles.” Rick Higgins SVP Merchandising/Marketing, Skechers Performance

As Kirui emerged through the gray haze and crossed the finish line at the Santa Monica Pier and grabbed the Kenyan flag, he had made it all look easy. “Our footwear is designed to be worn right out of the box,” said Kurt Stockbridge, Vice President, Technical Development, Skechers Performance. “They are extremely comfortable and one of our philosophies is that running shoes should be an extension of your foot.” At this year’s Expo, marathon runners will have their own chance to emulate Kirui and purchase limitededition Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon footwear. Finally, two limited edition styles of the Skechers GOrun Forza 2 will be available. The versions of the popular trainers pop with custom, graphic designs that
feature Los Angeles. The stability sneakers have added medial support for a stable ride and offer a secure fit. For Skechers Performance, the successful sponsorship of the Los Angeles Marathon is emblematic of their performance line. Their athletic shoes have proven the ability to go the distance, quickly outpacing the competition to make Skechers the second largest sport footwear company in the United States. “We are a very serious athletic footwear company and we’re very serious about running,” said Rick Higgins, SVP, Merchandising/Marketing, Skechers Performance, adding the marathon is a perfect fit. “It was exciting to have our first title sponsorship be here in Los Angeles.” In fact, the marathon is

right in Skechers’ backyard. The finish line is just 12 miles from the $3 billion company’s Manhattan Beach headquarters. Over the years, the local brand has become a global behemoth: selling millions of shoes in department, specialty and independent stores, as well as through more than 2,012 Skechers Company-owned and third-party-owned retail stores and online at skechers.com. Skechers products are available in more than 160 countries and territories worldwide through a network of global distributors, joint venture partners in Asia and the Middle East, and wholly-owned subsidiaries in Canada, Japan, throughout Europe and Latin America. But once again on race day all that global reach comes home.
#GORUNLA S
KECHERS USA, Inc. is a worldwide brand with fans spread all over the globe, in over 160 countries. This year, some of those lucky fans will be lacing up on March 19, 2017 to represent the company’s international presence at the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon, and build awareness of the race in their hometown. Skechers Performance, the high-performance footwear division of SKECHERS USA, Inc, is hosting more than 60 athletes from 35 countries as part of their “GORUNLA” program, an endeavor created to bring the company’s growing international community together in one unique 26.2 mile experience. These runners will arrive from all walks of life. Some are seasoned athletes, while others are firsttime marathoners who will be hitting the pavement in their first full marathon. There are celebrities and business-owners, a magazine editor, and even India’s National 10K record holder,
all with the same goal: To cross the finish line and receive their medal from the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. For those wanting to follow the runners’ journeys, Skechers Performance created a microsite to capture their experiences from training, through race day. Photos posted on social media by the GORUNLA participants and tagged with #GORUNLA, populates on SkechersGOrunLA.com. For most of the group, running is a very personal experience. Nick Quenet, a triathlete who currently lives and trains in Stellenbosch, South Africa, said that running shapes a large part of his daily life, and that running is the best form of relaxation. The avid athlete believes that running is simple for him; all he needs is a pair of shoes, a road and an adventurous mind. Which is why the “Stadium to the Sea” course is a perfect fit for Quenet. “I am truly grateful for the
opportunity provided by Skechers Performance to run the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon,” said Quenet. “I love traveling around the world for my sport and I’m positive this occasion will be no different! I can’t wait to absorb the culture and ambience that the city has to offer.” Another international runner attending with Skechers Performance includes Olympian, Zhang Xinyan. Xinyan trains and lives in China where she has been a dedicated athlete since childhood. She joined the national youth team and made remarkable achievements in many games and events. She was the 1500m champion of the 2014 and 2016 National Track and Field Games. Recently, she participated in the 2016 Rio Olympics for China and she is anticipating a personal best performance in Los Angeles due to her rigorous training and preparation. Santiago Garcia is from Buenos Aires, Argentina and is a film journalist as well as an author. He is considered the most popular running author in Argentina, and later this year he will publish
his third book. A longtime runner, Garcia began racing the marathon distance in 2009. He completed fourteen marathons, plus numerous half marathons, 10Ks, trail and ultra trail races. In 2015, he was one of the first Argentines to complete the Six World Marathon Majors with a personal best of 02:54:23 in Tokyo. For Garcia, the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon is an excellent opportunity to experience Los Angeles not only as a runner but as a professional filmmaker, which is Garcia’s full time profession. The unique course takes the runner through many of L.A.’s most beloved landmarks and neighborhoods such as the Dodger Stadium, the Disney Concert Hall, Beverly Hills and the scenic finish in Santa Monica. There is even a view of the Hollywood sign at mile 11. For Skechers Performance, Los Angeles is not only the Company’s hometown, but also a vibrant and unique city that will unfold on March 19th 2017 to thousands of runners— many from across the globe.

To complete the Conqur LA Challenge, a runner must participate in three events within one season: The Santa Monica Classic (either the 5K or 10K), the Pasadena Half Marathon at the Rose Bowl and the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. To earn the Triple 5K Tour of LA series medal, runners must participate in the Santa Monica Classic 5K, the Pasadena 5K at the Rose Bowl and the LA BIG 5K at Dodger Stadium, within one season. Last year, the Santa Monica Classic sold out and had a record 4,565 entrants with citizens of nine different countries and residents from twenty-four different states competing. The race has grown 44% since 2015 with 66% of the athletes running the 10K race. While some runners have experience, the Classic is open to all participants regardless of ability. Some participate for the fun and the gorgeous setting, enjoying the breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean, whereas others are set on improving their personal best or competing with runners in their age group. This year,
all finishers received a shirt, medal, post-race refreshments and a memorable experience as U.S. Olympic marathon medal winner Meb Keflezighi was in attendance and cheered runners on as they finished on Ocean Blvd. "The Santa Monica Classic is an energizing, challenging, and exciting race at the heart of one of Southern California's most recognizable locations,” said Linzie Starr, who has run the Santa Monica Classic several times. “There's nothing better than early morning ocean spray in the air as you run toward conquering your goals. This is a race the running community looks forward to every year…. I know I do."
To encourage youth participation, this year’s Classic included a High School Challenge between the Santa Monica High School and Malibu High School Cross Country Teams. The Classic was a big hit for the school community with parents, employees and students participating. The race took place during the schools’ cross-country season, and Santa Monica High School Cross Country Coach Tania Fischer explained that it was a welcomed addition to the regular season. “The high school challenge was a great event with over 60 students participating in the challenge, who competed in three divisions.
Santa Monica won the overall team cup, which was based on top three female finishers and top male finishers,” said Coach Fischer. The Santa Monica Classic is a great way to experience downtown Santa Monica, the scenic and iconic coast line and the runners enjoy taking over the streets of Santa Monica, which are normally bustling with cars. Post-race, everyone joins in on the fun at the Finish Festival on Santa Monica Pier. Last year the Finish Festival had 10,000 attendees, and in a survey conducted by Conqur, 93% of participants plan on returning this year, when the Santa Monica Classic will celebrate its 10th anniversary on Sept. 10, 2017.

LA ROAD RUNNERS KEEP PACE WITH THE NEEDS OF ATHLETES O
n March 19, there will be some 24,000 athletes traveling 26.2 miles through the streets of Los Angeles and as is tradition for the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon, the LA Road Runners will have a visible presence among the crowd. LA Road Runners, (LARR) is not only the largest training group of it’s kind in California but is also the official training program of the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. Approximately 1,000 LARR members are registered to participate in this year’s race. To help runners make the now-famous “Stadium to the Sea” trip, LARR provides Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon hopefuls with an officially sanctioned six-month training program that runs from September through March. The program includes weekly practices with a professional coach, pace groups, guest speakers, technical training, race day perks and LA Road Runners swag. “The key benefit you
40
receive when joining LARR is being welcomed into a family,” according to the group’s Program Coordinator, Mark Minichiello. “Training for, and running a marathon as part of a group makes the effort and experience even more enjoyable.” LARR accommodates a variety of individuals, whether you are training for your first marathon or you are a seasoned runner, LARR can help each individual excel. LA Road Runner, David Reyes said, “I think LARR is a great program. It is very easy to find the level that best suits you. It is great to run with various people who come from
different walks of life.” The 20 different pace groups provide a home for runners and walkers of all abilities. Groups one through ten are running groups. These athletes run an average of seven to twelve-minute miles, with projected finish times of three to five hours. Groups eleven through seventeen are run and walk groups, while the remaining three groups are walking to the finish line in Santa Monica. “LA Road Runners is motivation for me. Running with people from different walks of life is great and it keeps me and everyone else inspired,” said Reyes. Pace leaders are a key component of the LARR program. Milady Arenales is otherwise known as Mila within her LARR family. Arenales, is a Group 4 Pace leader, and has been part of LARR for two years. “I got involved with LARR in 2015 and I would not have
2017 SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON
been able to complete my first marathon without the help of the LARR pace leaders,” said Arenales. “LARR helped give me the confidence to continue running and pursue my running goals.” In this year’s Marathon, Arenales is looking forward to being a pace leader and supporting her fellow LARR colleagues. She said, “LARR is composed of an amazing group of people who support and help each other. Ultimately we are a family.” The program offers a community of athletes and professional coaching led by Head Coach Gerard Deegan, Head Coach and Team Manager of the Irish National Triathlon team, who took over in 2016. “Being the LARR Coach has been the most enjoyable thing I have ever done. It is different from coaching in elite sports to someone who is motivated to cross their first finish line,” said Deegan. “I have enjoyed this opportunity and helping people achieve their goals and living a healthier lifestyle. I have been blessed and prepped by some of the best coaches myself. They all put a lot of time and effort into me, grooming me for what I do now,” said Deegan. This year, a group of 90+ Pace Leaders will lead over 1,000 runners as they complete the 2017 Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon.
TECHNOLOGY FEEDS THE PRERACE APPETITE T
he official Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon app powered by Fitbit is pushing the envelope this year, resulting in a cutting-edge race app that runners and spectators can benefit from downloading on their smartphones long before the actual race day. When the training miles seem to stretch forever and long runs seem to never end, marathon runners can plug into the app’s new, free radio station powered by Feed.FM. The radio station offers three playlists: power, endurance and cool down, adding up to more than 15 hours of heart pumping music. The playlists have been curated by Olympic medalist and Skechers
“There’s actually a ton of research around music’s impact on performance. One study calls music a ‘legal performanceenhancing drug.’ It can quicken your pace when you need it and really give you a boost when the run gets difficult.” Lauran Pufpaf Chief Marketing Officer, Feed.FM
Performance marquee athlete Meb Keflezighi. Music and running are a natural pair, according to Feed.FM’s Chief Marketing Officer Lauran Pufpaf, a marathon runner who knows from personal experience how difficult those last few miles can be. “There’s actually a ton of research around music’s impact on performance,” Pufpaf said. “One study calls music a ‘legal performance-enhancing drug.’ It can quicken your pace when you need it and really give you a boost when the run gets difficult.” When they’re not hitting the trail, runners can plan every mile of their race on the official Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon app powered by Fitbit by looking at the detailed course map. Whether they would like to learn about historic landmarks along the route or take note of every water station and medical tent, runners can line up on race day with a clear view of what they will encounter ahead of the finish line. “There’s a lot of race apps out there that provide great information but we wanted to go above and beyond to give athletes a chance to engage with our race before they get here,” said Ryan Cavinder, Senior Marketing Manager for
Conqur Endurance Group. As the runners make their way from the Stadium to the Sea, the powerful tracker will send their friends and family real-time updates of their progress. The app is even more accurate this year, thanks to partnerships with Fitbit and RTRT. Spectators can look forward to more timing maps along the course and an innovative algorithm that predicts a runner’s location in realtime. All these upgrades make it easier for your friends to find you along the course and cheer you on. The app keeps runners connected in two ways: first with a detailed timeline of all the events surrounding race day. After they arrive in Los Angeles, runners can visit the Health & Fitness Expo, attend a Speakers Series or even
run the 2017 LA BIG 5K. Runners can organize their race schedule and then share it with their social networks on Facebook and Twitter or by email directly through the app. Finally, runners can stay connected by snapping photos and adding Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon borders and filters before they share on social media. A custom feed in the official Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon app powered by Fitbit keeps runners connected with all the latest updates on race day as well as pictures of their friends and support team. The 2017 official race app powered by Fitbit is available for free in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store.

eorge Good will line up at the starting line March 19 for the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon knowing he’s already run around the world. Between 32 Los Angeles Marathons and countless hours spent training on the fire trails near his home on Mullholland Drive, Good has covered quite a bit of ground. To fuel his habit and keep track of all those miles, Good has kept a running logbook every year since 1981. He started with a logbook by Jim Fixx to encourage every day running, and has kept up with the habit long after the famous athlete’s death. “I write down some things that I’m thinking about at the time,” Good said as he looked through the old journals. “Politics and whatever - as they

relate to running. That helps. It’s a culmination of a lot of things that keep me running.” Over nearly four decades, the journals have stacked up high in his garage. A few years ago, Good’s grandson suggested he take the time to add up all those miles. The numbers amazed them. As of January 1, 2017, Good has run 28,037 miles. The length of the equator is about 24,860 miles, so you could say he is already into his second lap. “I’ve got endurance. I’m not sure if I’m actually in good shape but I’m stubborn,” Good said of his persistence to marathon train year after year. Good is always thinking about the marathon ahead. He is one of 158 Legacy Runners who have run the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon every single year. The very first Los Angeles Marathon set a record when the runners
lined up March 9, 1986. With 10,787 registered entrants, it was the largest first time marathon field ever assembled. The original race started on Figueroa Street near the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. While the race course has morphed over the decades, that pack of these 163 runners represent a constant for the Los Angeles Marathon over the years. This exclusive group is not open for new members for obvious reasons and every one of them has their sights set on being a Legacy Runner for as long as they can. The goal of each approaching marathon and the accountability provided by the tight-knit group keeps runners like Good going. “My goal is to finish and keep the streak alive,” Good said, adding that it’s become a bit addictive. “I just feel so good when I’ve run. I feel psychologically good. Even if my body hurts, it’s a good hurt.” That good feeling has helped him through the ups

and downs of running over the years, including two heart attacks. He had his first heart attack about fifteen years ago – his doctor found a kink in one of his arteries. After surgery and a few stints, he thought he was good as new. When he hit the trail to train with his dog one January morning a few years later, he was struck again by that familiar feeling. A quick drive to the hospital and his doctors told him he was having a heart attack once again. The Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon was in March that year and Good’s doctors made sure he made his goal of running it once again. “My doctor actually met me at mile 20 and ran the last six miles with me,” Good said. He’s been thankful for a good bill of health ever since and looking forward to his next marathon and another reunion with the familiar faces who helped carry him through the last 32 years of running.

RUNNERS ATTEMPTING TO SET WORLD RECORDS AT THIS YEAR’S MARATHON T
his year, some runners crossing the finish line at the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon will also be newly minted world record title holders. The Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon has partnered with the Guinness World Records organization to offer on-site verification of world records attempted during the race. “Attempting a Guinness World Records title is a great way to enhance your marathon experience,” said Public Relations Manager for Guinness World Records, Kristen Ott. This partnership is a truly historic event as it will be the first time Guinness World Records partners with a US based marathon. “Annually, there are more than 24,000 runners who participate in the scenic “Stadium to the Sea” course on the streets of Los Angeles,” said Chief Executive of Conqur Endurance Group, Tracey Russell. “We’re thrilled to present runners with this opportunity to exceed extraordinary limits and make their race experience even more special.” Guinness World Records has years of experience working with marathons around the world to offer onsite record verification. Ott explains with Los Angeles’s vibrant culture, the Skechers
44
Performance Los Angeles Marathon seemed to be a natural fit to work with on their first US based marathon partnership. “Each Guinness World Records record category has a specific set of guidelines, or rules, unique to that title. For example, each costumed marathon record has specific requirements as to what qualifies a specific costume that the runner must wear. This is so the record category can be standardized for anyone attempting it around the world,” said Ott. “Additionally, for any costumed marathon record, the participant must keep the entire costume on throughout the duration of the marathon.” In order to attempt a certified record, potential runners visited the Guinness website
which listed some 200 marathon related records. After selecting a category, and submitting an application, runners received a list of rules, regulations and procedures related to that record. Additionally, runners who had an idea for a record not already listed could propose their concept to Guinness. From costumed records to challenges that add an extra physical element, there are a variety of records that have been set at other marathons around the world. In 2016, six records were achieved at the Scotiabank Toronto Waterfront Marathon including, fastest marathon while pushing a stroller and fastest marathon dressed as a chef. In the UK, at the Virgin Money London Marathon, 32

official Guinness World Record titles were achieved including fastest four-legged marathon, fastest marathon in a two-person costume, and fastest marathon in a firefighter's uniform. Ambitious and hopeful participants must be entered in the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon event before visiting the Guinness World Records website to apply to break or set a new record. From there participants must submit an application through the Guinness World Records website for pre-approval. “We hope our partnership will make this already great event, even better,” said Ott.

FIRST RESPONDERS ARE AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE MARATHON A
few years ago, Sandra Marquez lost her cheerleader when her confidante and partner in crime, Willie Dunn, passed away from cancer after dedicating his life to working as a firefighter. “Willie was my main supporter in running, he was in the last half mile of my first half marathon,” Marquez wrote on her fundraising page on CrowdRise. “Ever since then, I have run many half marathons in his name.” This year will mark a new milestone when Marquez completes her first marathon in Dunn’s memory. In doing so, she will also have raised more than $1,000 for a great cause: The Widow, Orphans and Disabled Firemen’s Fund. The nurse is one of 12 runners taking on the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon for the fund in addition to nine running the charity relay. Together, the team of first responders and their loved ones have raised over $12,000 for the charity that helps families of firefighters who are killed, injured or develop illness because of their jobs. “It’s a dangerous job. It’s a risky job. Sometimes the unexpected can happen,” said Marlene Casillas, development and marketing director for the charity. The fundraisers are just a few of the many first responders taking part in the 2017
46
Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. The firefighters and police officers come from all over the world. In fact, Conqur Endurance Group is hosting twelve first responders who have traveled from Germany to run the stadium to the sea course. “Firefighters and police all over the world consider themselves a brotherhood,” said Isaac Burks, a retired firefighter who helped organize the trip in honor of the 50th anniversary of Los Angeles and Berlin becoming sister cities. Along the 26.2 mile stretch, those firefighters and police officers will be
greeted by hundreds of Los Angeles area first responders who are working March 19 to make sure the runners are safe. As the route winds from Dodger Stadium to Santa Monica, runners pass through several cities with independent police and fire departments. All those agencies start planning a year ahead of the race to coordinate safety concerns. “It’s a good opportunity for us to function as a unified agency,” said David Ortiz, with the Los Angeles Fire Department. Paramedics follow the crowds on race day to provide emergency assistance from ambulances,

bikes and off road vehicles. While last year’s coastal cloud layer gave runners a bit of relief, firefighters prepare for all conditions and will have cooling centers along the route should the weather be warmer during this year’s race. “The majority of people who participate in the marathon are not elite runners,” Ortiz said. “They are recreational runners who want to get out there and make history by running a marathon and the first responders are there to support them to make sure they have a great experience.

A LANDMARK RACE Stadium to the Sea incorporates LA Landmarks DODGER STADIUM Sitting atop its perch in ChĂĄvez Ravine, Dodger Stadium appears to preside over Downtown Los Angeles. Construction began on the stadium in 1959 and it opened in 1962 after the Dodgers moved from Brooklyn to L.A. The third oldest baseball stadium still in use today, it was also the home of the California Angels until 1965. Dodger Stadium seats more people than any other baseball stadium in the country.

OLVERA STREET Situated on the site of the original Los Angeles settlement, Olvera Street takes its name from Agustin Olvera, the first judge in Los Angeles County. Today it acts as a thriving Mexican marketplace where tourists and shoppers alike find brightly colored piĂąatas, sombreros and pottery in addition to the smells of Mexican cuisine. But Olvera has had a rocky history since its establishment as the central plaza for the early settlement. With the expansion of L.A., it lay forgotten by the 1920s and became a gateway to downtown for Mexican immigrants. Its revitalization began in 1926 when the city agreed to save the Avilla Adobe, the oldest home in L.A., from demolition. Since then, it has grown into a bustling tourist attraction and historic site. SEE LANDMARK PAGE 56

CATHEDRAL OF OUR LADY OF THE ANGELS Towering over Downtown Los Angeles, the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels steeps the community in cultural and religious significance, serving as the archdiocese of more than four million Catholics. Visible from the Hollywood Freeway and located on an elevated section of the old Bunker Hill, the cathedral marks the location of the Archbishop’s celebration honoring the major liturgies of the year. The cathedral is rich in cultural diversity and holds Sunday mass in 42 different languages. Inside, visitors are brought to awe by the beautifully colored stained glass depicting religious figures outlined by vivid gold, burgundy and royal blue tones. With further exploration, the main church contains smaller wings colored by art pieces and paintings. HOLLYWOOD SIGN On a clear day in L.A. it’s hard to miss the Hollywood Sign looming from its place atop Mt. Lee. The original sign, constructed in 1923, spelled out “Hollywoodland” and served as an advertisement for L.A. Times publisher Harry Chandler’s new real estate development. Originally adorned with flashing lights, the sign fell into disrepair throughout much of the mid-1900s. In

the early 1940s, the Hollywoodland real estate development went under and by 1949 the “land” had been removed. TCL CHINESE THEATER Located along the historic Hollywood Walk of Fame, TCL Chinese Theater was commissioned in 1926, and celebrated its opening in 1927 with the premiere of Cecil B. DeMille’s film “The King of Kings.” One of the theater’s most distinctive points of attraction is the concrete blocks set in the court, which bears the sig-
natures, footprints and handprints of more than 200 celebrities spanning from the 1920s to present day. Structurally daunting, the theater rises more than 90-feet with two red coral columns adorned by wrought iron masks holding up the dazzling bronze roof. Adding to the grand design, between the columns is a 30-foot high dragon carved from stone. The theater was declared a historic-cultural landmark in 1968.

CHATEAU MARMONT HOTEL Modeled after Chateau d’Amboise in the French Loire Valley, the Chateau Marmont Hotel has brought a little French class to the city of L.A. It opened in 1927 as an apartment house, but high rents and the Great Depression kept business away. When it reopened as a hotel in 1931, it saw an influx in celebrity clientele. Famous guests have included Jim Morrison of The Doors, who hurt his back during a stay at the hotel after dangling from a drainpipe, Greta Garbo and members of the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Members of the band Led Zepplin once drove their motorcycles through the lobby of the hotel, leaving a considerable amount of damage.
WHISKY A GO GO Billed as a discotheque when it opened in 1964, the Whisky A Go Go established itself as a hot spot for the Los Angeles music scene early on, even hosting a live band on its opening night. During the 60s, the Whisky helped popularize the go-go dance craze that shook the nation, hiring go-go dancers and DJs to perform. It also launched the career of many L.A. bands, including Love and The Doors. Because of its
music role, the Whisky has been immortalized in a variety of songs, such as Motley Crue’s “Down at the Whisky.” The Whisky learned to reinvent itself as go-go dancing evolved into the new wave and punk trends of the 70s. But it fell on hard times in the early 80s as punk began to die out. To save face, it closed as a club and turned into a venue with rentable space.

BEVERLY HILLS CITY HALL The Beverly Hills City Hall has presided over the city since 1932 when architect William Gage created the building in the Spanish Renaissance style. But when it showed signs of age in the early 1980s, Beverly Hills embarked on a renovation project to bring it up to safety and earthquake codes. Ensuring the preservation of the green- and gold-tiled dome and marble floors, the renovation also increased the office space. The architectural style has since inspired the design for the Beverly Hills Civic Center. ROUTE 66 This famous highway was established in 1926 and originally ran from Chicago to Los Angeles, passing through Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico and Arizona. The route was traversed as a path for migrants who traveled west during the Dust Bowl of the 1930s and towns built up along the road to cater to these travelers. It was then popularized by the Nat King Cole Trio song “(Get Your Kicks On) Route 66.” The road was removed from the U.S. Highway System in 1985 but various portions have been designated national scenic byways. In 2009, the Santa Monica Pier became the official end of Route 66, even though it originally ended at the intersection of Lincoln and Olympic boulevards.

SANTA MONICA
SANTA MONICA PIER
SANTA MONICA PIER The Santa Monica Pier has a storied history as a world-famous tourist attraction. When first built in 1909, it was meant to be a municipal pier to carry sewage to the water. It wasn’t until 1916 that a shorter pleasure pier was built. In 1922 the famed carousel was added. During its heyday, the pier was home to the La Monica Ballroom and a variety of rides and attractions. When the city took control of the pier in 1953, many Santa Monicans feared this foreshadowed its demise. In the 1970s, citizens organized to preserve the pier from being converted into a resort hotel and the city eventually
rescinded its decision. Tourists can still find the carousel and amusement park situated atop the pier, which celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2009.
“We are a community of avid runners, bikers, surfers and fitness enthusiasts, so we welcome the LA Marathon and the athletes who will cross the finish line with the Pacific Ocean to their right and a community of supporters to their left. Congratulations on a tremendous feat!”

YOUTH PROGRAMS ACCOMPLISH MUCH MORE THAN PHYSICAL FITNESS A
week before runners line up for the 2017 Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon, thousands of young Los Angeles elementary school students will have already paved the way for them at Dodger Stadium. It is an astounding feat to witness: a swarm of students in their matching neon green “26th Mile” t-shirts stampede to finish their own, personal marathons. It is the last mile of eight weeks of hard work for the students enrolled in Los Angeles Unified School District’s Beyond the Bell program. Each student runs a cumulative 26.2 miles during the after school enrichment program while learning about exercise, nutrition and physical fitness. “It’s an impressive view when you see all these students putting forth their best effort,” said Alvaro Cortez, Executive Director of Beyond the Bell, who watched the kids from the crest of the parking lot at Dodger Stadium last year. “It’s so inspiring to see them out there on race morning.” LAUSD officials say programs like this one have a lasting impact on the children who participate. The 26th Mile was developed to promote positive self-image, physical fitness, body awareness, sportsmanship, leadership skills, and teamwork. About 25,000 children in grades K-5 participated in
62
this year’s program, with more than 6,000 running their last mile Sunday, March 12 at Dodger Stadium. When they reach the finish line, each child receives a medal designed and donated by the team at Conqur Endurance Group. “Earning the medal is fun because you put in the time and definitely earned it,” Cortez said. “The medal has a lot of meaning, since you don’t just get it for running, you get it for achieving a long term goal.” The 26th Mile program fits nicely with another youth initiative supported by the Conqur Endurance Group and connected to the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon, Students Run LA (SRLA). SRLA is a non-profit high school program at 175 LAUSD schools where students can sign up to train and eventually run the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon for free. Every year, Conqur provides 3,500 complimentary entries for students in the SRLA program – adding up to the equivalent of $612,000 in charitable giving. Over the years, Conqur Endurance Group has donated over $6.5 million in race fees in support of the SRLA program. In addition to the complimentary race entry, students also receive guidance from teachers and other volun-
teers who devote hours of their time as team leaders to help prepare the students for the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. These volunteer team leaders act as their coach, mentor and biggest cheerleader for the entire school year. They are there every step of the way to ensure the students feel supported both in school, and in their training. With this incredible support, the students go on to do much more than run a marathon. Last year, 717 seniors completed the rigorous training program and subsequently the Skechers Performance Los Angeles Marathon. Of those students, 99 percent also graduated from high school and 95 percent of them planned to go to college. Since 1989, more than 60,000 students
2017 SKECHERS PERFORMANCE LOS ANGELES MARATHON
have gone through SRLA and crossed the finish line of the marathon. “If you look at kids that become engaged after school, they learn how to manage their time better,” Cortez said, who also serves on the board for SRLA. “You don’t just get up on a morning in March and say ‘I’m going to run 26.2 miles today.’ It takes a lot of training to continue to put one step in front of the other.” This commitment truly translates to other areas of their life, and helps them achieve other long term goals. In the end, the training schedule teaches the high school students to be dedicated and hard working in all aspects of their lives and is an extraordinary lesson learned.
