All the feels with genre warping Warpaint n the first full-length Warpaint album, Theresa Wayman describes the feeling of being adrift in Los Angeles—the band’s birthplace—to the tune of a brooding, almost haunting, melody. “And the city I walk in, the city I walk in / It feels like it swallows / With my hand in my pocket / I feel like a shadow, I feel like a shadow,” she sings on “Shadows,” but plenty has changed in the seven years since the all-female quartet released the track. Indeed, when Warpaint’s musicians arrive at the Santa Monica Pier to wrap up this summer’s Twilight Concert Series with a headline show Aug. 17, they’ll be out of the shadows and squarely in the spotlight. Thousands of the locally based band’s fans will descend on the pier and adjacent beaches to hear an evening’s worth of Warpaint—complete with the atmospheric sounds and evocative lyrics that have come to characterize the group. “Aside from the sonic peculiarities of playing outside, there’s always a different mood at open air shows - they’re usually festivals,” said Stella Mozgawa. “It’s not as focused on a singular experience, it’s more about the environment that the crowd and the band find themselves in. I think that can affect the mood of the performance. It’s harder to be cranky when you’re playing by the ocean.” And the spotlight shining on Warpaint appears brighter by the moment. The band will be touring in support of English electronic legends Depeche Mode later this year, making several stops at the famous Hollywood Bowl. A quintessentially Los Angeles landmark, it seems a fitting venue for a group that has flirted with the celebrity culture of the city it calls home. That includes the fact that the band performed at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival after releasing “The Fool” in 2010. That includes the fact that former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist John Frusciante, then the boyfriend of vocalist/guitarist Emily Kokal, helped the group put together its 2008 debut EP. And that includes the fact that “Love Is to Die,” the lead single from Warpaint’s selftitled album in 2014, was featured in a Calvin Klein advertisement. To Wayman, Kokal and fellow bandmates Jenny Lee Lindberg (bass/vocals) and Stella Mozgawa (drums), though, Warpaint’s success is merely a side effect of the music it makes. The members of the group are less interested in how people describe them—everything from dream pop to indie to psychedelic rock—than in pushing beyond the various genre labels bestowed upon them. At the Pier this week, they are prepared to bring their unique sound to the crowd, regardless of its makeup. “Especially if it’s a festival vs. a club show - it’s not always strictly “your” crowd at a festival so you’re more likely to sprinkle in familiar songs as opposed to deeper cuts. Playing to your physical environment helps, too - trying to predict the mood in a particular place, at a particular time of day,” said Mozgawa. “I

feel like there’ll be a lovely mix of people that may not have heard our music and those that are fans. That’s always a lovely combination.” Warpaint’s latest gem is “Heads Up,” the group’s first work since embarking on separate projects following its previous tour. It’s stands as a slightly dancier, more upbeat entry into the band’s catalogue, and it lends itself to the quartet’s energetic live performances.

But even though “Heads Up” takes on a slightly different sound than Warpaint’s previous work, it remains as substantive and meaningful as anything the band has created. Take the opening lines of “The Stall,” for example: “Want to calm you down / Like I could once in your life / Want to settle all your worries / How to make you feel all right?” The track’s toe-tapping rhythms manage to complement its pen-

sive lyrics, rather than overpower them, and the result is refreshingly original. Mozgawa said that at the end of the day, the songs, performances and show are about the connection with the audience. “(Success is) if we feel like we gave it our all the crowd had a good time. It’s always a two way street, we play better when the crowd is engaging with us,” she said.

CONCERT GARDEN

VOLUNTEER

FIRST AID/LOST & FOUND

No tickets necessary, this is pure free Summer fun (remember that?) all thanks to our partners and sponsors who have brought us another season of awesome free concerts at the beach. Make sure to show them some love.

There is a 21-and-over Concert Garden featuring refreshments from Boulevard and Duvel beers, Deep Eddy Vodka, and an assortment of cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages. Do not miss this view.

We couldn't put on this free amazing event without a little (or a lot) of help from our friends. Wanna volunteer?

If you need first aid or assistance, please visit the Pier Tent or flag down a security officer. If it is an emergency, please call 911.

FOOD & DRINK

PETS

There are plenty of great food and beverage options on the deck and at the various restaurants on the Pier. Most even have to-go options perfect for munching during the show. As a reminder, alcohol consumption is not permitted in public spaces, but there are several full-service bars in the area.

Friendly dogs are welcome on the Pier only and must be on a leash.

TIME 7PM - 10PM, but those in the know stake out a good spot early.

METRO EXPO Arrive in style on the new EXPO line. No parking, no traffic, no hassles.

WEATHER & ATTIRE It never gets too cold, but sometimes it gets a little chilly once the sun goes down. So bring something or head up to the Pier Tent on the deck to grab this year's limited-edition sweatshirt or t-shirt!

PARKING We highly recommend alternate transport for a hassle-free experience (EXPO, Bus, Breeze Bike Share, rideshare, skateboard, walk, llama), but if you need to drive, parking is available in the 1550 Pacific Coast Highway Lot next to the Pier on a first-come, first-served basis. Those wanting to avoid long waits and higher fees should try one of the municipal lots a few blocks inland around 2nd/Colorado or 4th/Olympic.

BIKE/SKATEBOARD VALET Park your wheels at the free bike and skateboard valet located next to the beach bike path just south of the Pier. Make it even easier and cruise over on a bike from the new BREEZE bike share.

SMOKING Don't even think about it, it's a 100-year-old wooden Pier, and we really like it.

FRIENDS & FAMILY Bring them, the more the merrier. You will not regret it. This is one epic Summer tradition.

SEATING Seating is not provided, so feel free to bring your own chairs, blankets, etc...
