L Research
In industry, the NAMRI/SME paper did not only provide direct impact to real-world problem-solving, but also enlightened the use of data analytics in solving complicated process and quality issues in the steel mills, which are traditionally conservative, and low-tech. Overall, those algorithms have been implemented in OGT’s HotEye® systems, which are in use by more than 40 plants in the U.S., Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, Singapore and the U.K. The collective implementation of the system has resulted in more than $100 million in cost savings, 1.2 billion kWh in energy savings, and 50,000 tons of CO2 emission reductions per year.

2021 Outstanding Lifetime Service Award Steven Y. Liang, PhD, FSME Georgia Institute of Technology
Steven Y. Liang holds a PhD from University of California-Berkeley and is the Morris M. Bryan Jr. Professor for Advanced Manufacturing in Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology. Liang’s research efforts on physics-based analysis of precision machining and metal additive manufacturing have provided significantly broader fundamental understanding of manufacturing science and engineering. He has made extraordinary contributions to the growth and development of a manufacturing research community in many professional roles and leadership capacities, including his service aspresident of NAMRI/SME, scientific chair of transactions of NAMRI, chair of MED/ASME, technical editor of International Journal of Precision Engineering and Manufacturing, editor in chief of the Journal of Manufacturing and Materials Processing, and the organizer of a large number of flagship international conferences on manufacturing. Among his accolades are the Robert B. Douglas Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award of SME, Ralph R. Teetor Education Award of the Society of SAE, Blackall Machine Tool and Gage Award of ASME, Outstanding Service Award of MED/ASME, Milton C. Shaw Manufacturing Research Medal of ASME, Gold Medal of SME, and Most Influential Professor in Smart Manufacturing of SME. Liang is fellow of ASME, SME and AET.

Founders Lecture 2021 Founders Lecture
A Student’s Perspective on the Early Days of NAMRC NAMRI/SME Founders Lecture, June 2021
Warren R. DeVries, PhD, FSME
Professor Emeritus of Mechanical Engineering and Dean Emeritus of Engineering and Information Technology, UMBC
Abstract In the spring of 1970, I was an undergraduate mechanical engineering student and in the spring of 1974 I was a graduate student. Some of what I’ll speak about is based on firsthand knowledge, but a lot of it is what I gleaned from listening and learning from individuals who were there when I was a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, primarily Marvin DeVries and the late S.M. (Sam) Wu. In both cases, I’ve focused on things that students talk about and remember over a period of 50 years. I’ve taken this perspective first, because students have been an important part of NAMRC from the beginning — it’s often the first venue where a student makes that first conference presentation. Second, as we near the 50th anniversary of this annual gathering, it’s important to reflect on if it has held on to its core values, while remaining flexible and equipped to lead change in manufacturing research and practice.
Journal Recognitions SME would like to recognize the following individuals for their service, diligence and oversight in reviewing and editing the submissions for its three peer-reviewed journals.

Manufacturing Vision Award The Blue Sky Competition at NAMRC is designed to identify long-term challenges and new visionary ideas for manufacturing so as to influence the future of manufacturing research and education in the U.S. Authors will present their abstracts during the conference, and presentation winners — as determined by the committee — will receive the NAMRI | SME David Dornfeld Manufacturing Vision Award. This award is named after the late University of California at Berkeley professor — also a fellow and past director of SME — who was considered a global leader in sustainable and smart manufacturing. The award recognizes outstanding vision and leadership within the manufacturing community. The competition will be judged by a panel of industry and government experts, including federal program officers interested in new concepts for large multi-project manufacturing research programs with relevance to their missions. Such ideas are often described as “radical,” “outrageous,” “transformational,” “unconventional” and “breakthrough.”
