Regulatory Considerations for Hospital-Based 3D Printing

There is a shift happening in the medical device world where hospitals are now evaluating whether they may play a role in not just the use, but also the manufacturing, of medical devices. Today, most of the work in this area focuses on 3D printing-enabled, personalized surgery implements, be they anatomic models, surgical guides or even implants. The regulatory system in the U.S. was established in the 1970s to regulate those marketing medical devices to the healthcare professionals who would use them to treat patients. The primary concern for all of those involved is ensuring that devices, regardless of where they are made, are safe for their intended use. Today’s shifting landscape has left questions as to if and how hospitals may be regulated in the future, should they embark on manufacturing medical devices themselves. Stakeholders representing leading hospitals, the FDA and industry will come together in this panel to imagine what the future could look like for this evolving area.

RAPID + TCT WORKSHOPS

Monday, May 1 | 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Additive Manufacturing — How to Build a Business Case

Additive Manufacturing (AM) provides novel solutions to manufacturing challenges, from rapid prototyping to performance breakthroughs and system maintenance. The AM supply chain shares some resources with traditional manufacturing, but it also presents unique considerations. This workshop includes an interactive exercise to build a business case for a real-world AM application, complementing the presentation materials.

Casting Workshop

Metal casting can be one of the most efficient and economical processes to manufacture a metal component. The goal of this workshop is to help the designer and purchaser to understand how the proper material/process marriage can unleash the power of metal casting, and how they will be better equipped to create the most cost-effective product.

An Introduction to 3D Scanning and Metrology

Each year at RAPID + TCT, a portion of the audience is comprised of individuals who are encountering metrology and 3d-scanning technology for the first time. Attending this workshop will provide newcomers with the knowledge and assurance necessary to comprehend metrology and 3D-scanning presentations, as well as facilitate the procurement of the most suitable tools for their applications.

Reviewing Uncharted Applications of 3D Printing in Healthcare

This workshop will explore not just the current state of 3D printing in healthcare, but other interesting potential use cases being utilized today like forensics, veterinary science, and more. Attendees will learn about the latest research and developments in this field, as well as discuss potential future applications.

Robust Additive Manufacturing Process Development for Industrialization

Metal additive manufacturing, particularly Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF), has become an indispensable part of today’s highly competitive product development and manufacturing production processes. In the LPBF process, material’s property and parts dimensional accuracy are all evolved during the printing process. In this short course, an AM physical metallurgy-based approach will cover fundamental, impactful factors, allowing one to achieve reliable and consistent product quality in production manufacturing environments.
